Dialogue gives a story color,

makes it exciting and moves it forward.

So what goes into writing effective dialogue?

کەواتە، چ شتێک دەبێتە ھۆی داڕشتنێکی سەرکەوتوو؟

Well, there are social skills:

باشە، چەند کارامەییەکی کۆمەڵایەتی ھەیە

making friends, solving conflicts, being pleasant and polite.

وەک دۆزینەوەی ھاوڕێ، چارەسەر کردنی کێشە، دڵخۆشی و بەڕێزیی،

We won't be using any of those today.

ئەمڕۆ باسی ئەم شتانە ناکەین.

Instead, we'll be working on -- let's call them "anti-social skills."

ئەمڕۆ باسی ئەو شتە دەکەین کە پێی دەگوترێت کارامەییە دژە-کۆمەڵایەتیەکان.

If you're a writer, you may already have a few of these.

ئەگەر تۆ نووسەریت، بەشێک لەم لێھاتوییانەت ھەیە

The first is eavesdropping.

یەکەم بریتییه‌ له‌ بە نھێنیی گوێگرتن.

If you're riding a bus and hear an interesting conversation, you could write it all down.

ئەگەر لە ناو پاسێکیت، گوێت لە چیرۆکێکی سەرنج ڕاکێش دەبێت، دەتوانیت بینوسیتەوە

Of course, when you write fiction, you're not describing real people,

بێگومان ئەگەر چیرۆکی بەرھەمی خەیاڵ بنوسیتەوە، باسی کەسانی ڕاستەقینە ناکەیت

you're making up characters.

تۆ کەسەکان دروست دەکەیت.

But sometimes the words you overhear can give you ideas.

بەڵام ھەندێک جار کاتێک گوێبیستی قسەیەک دەبیت، بیرۆکەیەکت پێ دەبەخشێت.

"I did not," says one person.

من وام نەکرد، کەسێک وا دەڵێت.

"I saw you," the other replies.

من تۆم بینی، کەسێک وەڵام دەداتەوە.

Who might be saying those words?

کێ دەشێت قسەی لەم شێوەیە بکات؟

Maybe it's two kids in a class, and the boy thinks the girl pushed him.

لەوانەیە دوو منداڵ لە پۆلێکدا، کوڕەکە ھەست بکات کچەکە فشاری بۆ ھێناوە.

Maybe it's a couple, but one of them is a vampire,

لەوانەیە خۆشەویست بن، بەڵام یەکێکیان ڤامپایەر بن،

and the woman vampire saw the man flirting with a zombie.

و ژنە ڤامپایەرەکە ھەستی کردبێت پیاوەکە لەگەڵ زۆمبیەکدا موو نەرمی کرد بێت.

Or maybe not.

لەوەیە بەم شێوەش نەبێت.

Maybe the characters are a teenager and his mother,

لەوانەیە کەسایەتیەکان ھەرزەکارێک و دایكی بن،

and they're supposed to be vegetarians, but the mother saw him eating a burger.

کە پێویستە سەوزە خۆر بن و دایکەکە بیبینێت کە بەرگرێک دەخوات.

So let's say you've decided on some characters.

باشە با وا دابنێین کە تۆ کەسایەتیەکانت ھەڵبژاردووە.

This is anti-social skill number two:

لێھاتووی دژە-کۆمەڵایەتی دووەھەم:

start pretending they're real.

وا خۆت پێشان بدە کە ئەمانه‌ ڕاستەقینه‌ن.

What are they like? Where are they from? What music do they listen to?

لە چی دەچن؟ لە کوێوە ھاتوون؟ گوێ بۆ چ جۆرە مۆسیقایەک شل دەکەن

Spend some time with them.

هه‌ندێك کاتیان لەگەڵ بەسەر ببە.

If you're on a bus, think about what they might be doing if they were there too.

ئەگەر لە ناو پاسێک بیت و، ئەگەر ئەوانیش لێرە بان چیان دەکرد

Would they talk on the phone, listen to music,

ئایا بە تەلەفۆن قسەیان دەکرد، گوێیان بۆ مۆسیقا شل دەکرد

draw pictures, sleep?

تابلۆیەکیان دەکێشا، دەخەوتن؟

What we say depends on who we are.

ئەوەی دەیڵێین پەیوەستە بەوەی ئێمە کێین.

An older person might speak differently than a younger person.

کەسێکی پیر لەوانەیە جیاواز لە کەسێکی گەنج قسە بکات.

Someone from the south might speak differently than someone from the north.

کەسێکی خەڵکی باشور لەوانەیە جیاواز لە کەسێکی خەڵکی باکور قسە بکات.

Once you know your characters, you can figure out how they talk.

ھەر کاتێک کەسایەتیەکانت ھەڵبژارد، دەتوانیت بزانیت کە چۆن قسە دەکەن

At this stage, it's helpful to use anti-social skill number three:

لەم قۆناغەدا، بەکارھێنانی کارامەیی دژە-کۆمەڵایەتی سێھەم کۆمەکت دەکات:

muttering to yourself.

لەگەڵ خۆت چرپە چرپ بکە.

When you speak your character's words, you can hear whether they sound natural,

کاتێک قسەی کەسەکان دەڵێیتەوە، دەتوانی بڕیار بدەیت کە ئاخاوتنەکە سروشتییە یان نا،

and fix them if necessary.

دەتوانیت چارەسەریان بکەیت.

Remember, most people are usually pretty informal when they speak.

لە بیرت بێت، زۆربەی کات کاتێک خەڵک قسە دەکەن زمانی نافەرمی بەکاردەھێنن.

They use simple language and contractions.

زمانی سادە و كورتكردنه‌وه‌ بەکار دەھێنن.

So, "Do not attempt to lie to me" sounds more natural as "Don't try to lie to me."

بۆیە، ھەوڵی درۆ کردن مەدە سروشتیترە لە ھەوڵی درۆ کردن لەگەڵ من مەدە.

Also keep it short.

ھەروەھا کورتبڕی بکە.

People tend to speak in short bursts,

خەڵک بە کورتی قسە دەکەن

not lengthy speeches.

درێژەدادڕی ناکەن.

And let the dialogue do the work.

گفتوگۆ ئیشی خۆی دەکات.

Ask yourself: do I really need that adverb?

لە خۆت بپرسە: ئایا پێویستم بەم ئاوەڵکارەیە

For instance, "'Your money or your life,' she said threateningly."

بۆ نموونە: یان پارەکەت یان ژیانت ھەڵبژێرە، بە ھەڕەشەوە کچەکە دەڵێت.

Here, "threateningly" is redundant, so you can get rid of it.

لێرە وشەی بە ھەڕەشەوە، دووبارە، دەتوانی ڕەشی بکەیتەوە.

But if the words and the actions don't match, an adverb can be helpful.

بەڵام ئەگەر وشە و کردارەکان ھاوشێوە نەبوون، ئاوەڵکارێک پێویست دەبێت.

"'Your money or your life,' she said lovingly."

پارە یان ژیان، بە ھەستێکی پڕ خۆشەویستیەوە وەی گووت.

So, to recap:

بە کورتی:

First, eavesdrop. Next, pretend imaginary people are real.

سەرەتا گوێبگرە. دواتر بیھێنە بەرچاوت خەڵکە خەیاڵییەکان ڕاستەقینەن.

Finally, mutter to yourself, and write it all down.

لە کۆتاییدا، لەگەڵ خۆت قسە بکە و بینوسەوە.

You already have everything you need.

ھەموو توخمە پێویستەکانت ھەیە.

This is fictional dialogue, or "How to Hear Voices in Your Head."

ئەمە گفتوگۆی بەرھەمی خەیاڵە یان "چۆن گوێ لە دەنگەکانی ناو مێشکت بگریت."
