It really makes a difference what we say.

هەر چیەک دەڵێین، گۆڕانکاری دروست دەکات.

I learned this from a woman who survived Auschwitz.

من ئەم قسەیە لە ژنێکی ئاوتشفیز فێر بووم.

She went to Auschwitz when she was fifteen years old,

کاتێک تەمەنی پازدە ساڵان دەبێت دەنێردرێتە ئاوتشفیز،

and her brother was eight, and the parents were lost.

لە هەمان کات براکەی ٨ ساڵان دەبیت و دایک و باوکیشی بێسەروشوێنن.

And she told me this,

بۆی گێڕامەوە:

"We were in the train going to Auschwitz,

لە ناو شەمەندەفەر بووم بەرەو ئاوتشفیز ،

and I looked down, and I saw my brother's shoes were missing.

سەیری خوارەوەم کرد، بینیم براکەم تاکە پێلاوێکی لەبەرە.

And I said, 'Why are you so stupid?

پێم گوت: بۆ ئەوەندە گەمژەیت؟

Can't you keep your things together?

ناتوانیت ئاگات لە کەلوپەلی خۆت بێت؟

For goodness sake!'

بۆ خاتری خوا!

The way an elder sister might speak to a younger brother."

هەر بەو شێوەی کە خوشکی گەورە قسە لەگەڵ برای بچووک دەکات.

Unfortunately, it was the last thing she ever said to him

بەداخەوە ئەمە کۆتا گفتوگۆی نێوان خوشک و براکە بوو

because she never saw him again.

بۆ هەمیشە لێک دادەبڕێن.

He did not survive.

براکە ڕزگاری نابێت.

And so when she came out of Auschwitz, she made a vow.

کاتێک لە ئاوتشفیز ڕزگاری دەبێت، پەیمانێ: دەدات.

She said, "I walked out of Auschwitz into life.

گوتی بە زیندووی لە سەربازگەی ئاوتشفیز ڕزگاری دەبێت،

And the vow was,

سوێند دەخوات،

"I will never say anything that couldn't stand

کە هیچ کاتێک قسەیەک نەکات کە وەک

as the last thing I ever say."

ئەوە وابێت کۆتا قسەیە.

Now, can we do that? No.

ئێستا دەتاونین ئاوا بکەین؟ نا

But it is a possibility to live in to.

بەڵام دەتوانین هەوڵ بدەین.
