Such a predicament would make many people despair and curse their awful fate.

But for Zeno of Cyprus, it became the foundation of his life's work and legacy.

به‌ڵام بؤ زێنۆی قوبرسی بووه‌ .هه‌وێنی كاره‌كانی

The once wealthy merchant lost everything when he was shipwrecked in Athens

بازگانێكی ده‌وڵه‌مه‌ند هه‌موو شتێكی ونكرد كاتێك گه‌شتیه‌كه‌ی نقوم بو له‌ ئه‌سینا

around 300 BCE.

With not much else to do, he wandered into a book shop,

became intrigued by reading about Socrates,

and proceeded to seek out and study with the city's noted philosophers.

As Zeno began educating his own students,

كه‌ ده‌ستی كرد به‌ فێركردنی ،قوتابیه‌كانی

he originated the philosophy known as Stoicism,

فه‌لسه‌فه‌كه‌ی دامه‌زراند كه‌ ،به‌ ستۆیسیزم (ئارام گرتن) ناوی ده‌ركرد

whose teachings of virtue, tolerance, and self-control

مه‌شقه‌كانی له‌سه‌ر چاكه‌ و چاوپۆشی و به‌رگه‌گرتن

have inspired generations of thinkers and leaders.

بووه‌ ئیلهام بۆدروست بوونی .سه‌ركرده‌كان وبیریاره‌كان

The name Stoicism comes from the Stoa Poikile,

ناوی ستۆیسیزم له‌ ستۆوه‌ ،پۆیه‌كیل هاتووه‌

the decorated public colonnade

ڕیزه‌ ستوونی نه‌خشێنراو

where Zeno and his disciples gathered for discussion.

ئه‌و شوێنه‌ی زێنۆ و قوتابیه‌كانی .لێ كۆده‌بوونه‌وه‌ بۆ گفتوگۆكردن

Today, we colloquially use the word stoic

ئه‌مڕۆ وشه‌ی ستۆیك باوه‌ و به‌كاردیت

to mean someone who remains calm under pressure

مانای كه‌سێك ئارام بگرێت له‌سه‌ر له‌ ژێر فشاردا

and avoids emotional extremes.

وه‌ دوور بكه‌وێته‌وه‌ له‌ .هه‌ڵچوونی له‌ ڕاده‌به‌ده‌ر

But while this captures important aspects of Stoicism,

له‌ كاتێك ئه‌مه‌ ده‌ستده‌گرێت به‌سه‌ر به‌شه‌ گرنگه‌كانی ستۆیسێزم

the original philosophy was more than just an attitude.

بنچینه‌ی فه‌لسه‌فه‌كه‌ .ته‌نها هه‌ڵوێست نیه‌

The Stoics believed that everything around us

ستۆكیكه‌كان بڕوایان وایه‌ هه‌مو شتێك له‌ ده‌ورمان

operates according to a web of cause and effect,

بنچینه‌كه‌ی ده‌گه‌ڕێته‌وه‌ بۆ ،تۆڕی هۆكار و كاریگه‌ریه‌كه‌ی

resulting in a rational structure of the universe,

له‌ ده‌رئه‌نجامی بنیاتێكی ،مه‌نتیقی گه‌ردوون

which they called logos.

And while we may not always have control over the events affecting us,

له‌ كاتێك دا ئێمه‌ ناتوانین هه‌موو كات ،كۆنتڕۆڵی كاریگه‌ری ڕوداوه‌كان بكه‌ین

we can have control over how we approach things.

ده‌توانین كۆنتڕۆڵی چۆنیه‌تی .نزیك بوونه‌وه‌مان بكه‌ین له‌ شته‌كان

Rather than imagining an ideal society,

له‌بری ئه‌وه‌ی خه‌یاڵی ،كۆمه‌ڵگایه‌كی ئایدیال بكه‌ین

the Stoic tries to deal with the world as it is

ستۆویك هه‌وڵ ده‌دات وه‌كو خۆی مامه‌ڵه‌ بكات له‌گه‌ڵ جیهان

while pursuing self-improvement through four cardinal virtues:

كاتێك به‌دوای به‌ره‌و پێش بردنین :له‌ ڕێگای چوارڕه‌وشته‌ سه‌ره‌كیه‌كان

practical wisdom,

،به‌ پراكتیكه‌ كردنی ژیری

the ability to navigate complex situations in a logical, informed, and calm manner;

توانای گۆرینی بارودۆخه‌ ئاڵۆزه‌كان بۆڕه‌فتاری لۆجیكی وهێمن؛

temperance,

،میانڕه‌وی

the exercise of self-restraint and moderation in all aspects of life;

ڕاهێنان له‌سه‌ر خۆبه‌ڕێوه‌به‌ری و میانڕه‌وی له‌ هه‌موو لایه‌نه‌كانی ژیان؛

justice,

،دادپه‌روه‌ری

treating others with fairness even when they have done wrong;

مامه‌ڵه‌ی یه‌كسانی له‌گه‌ل ئه‌وانی دیكه‌ ته‌نانه‌ت كه‌ هه‌ڵه‌ش ده‌كه‌ن؛

and courage,

،وه‌ دلێری

not just in extraordinary circumstances,

،نه‌ك ته‌نها له‌ هه‌ڵ ومه‌رجی نائاسای

but facing daily challenges with clarity and integrity.

به‌ڵكو خۆگرتن و ڕوبه‌ڕو بوونه‌وه‌ی .ئاسته‌نگه‌كانی ڕۆژانه‌

As Seneca, one of the most famous Roman Stoics wrote,

سێنیكا یه‌كێكه‌ له‌ فه‌یله‌سوفه‌ ستۆیكه‌ ناسراوه‌كانی ڕۆمانی نوسیتی

"Sometimes, even to live is an act of courage."

هه‌ندێك جا، زیندووبوون " ".به‌شێكه‌ له‌ دلێری

But while Stoicism focuses on personal improvement,

له‌كاتێك دا ستۆیسزم جه‌خت له‌سه‌ر ،چاكبوونی كه‌سی ده‌كاته‌وه‌

it's not a self-centered philosophy.

.به‌ڵام فه‌لسه‌فه‌یه‌كی خۆپه‌رستی نیه‌

At a time when Roman laws considered slaves as property,

له‌وكاته‌ی یاساكانی ڕۆم كۆیله‌یان وه‌كو سامان ده‌بینی

Seneca called for their humane treatment

سێنیكا داوای مامه‌ڵه‌ی مرۆڤانه‌ی بۆ ده‌كردن

and stressed that we all share the same fundamental humanity.

وە جه‌ختی له‌وه‌ ده‌كرده‌وه‌ هه‌موومان .هاوبه‌شین له‌ بنچینه‌ی مرۆڤایه‌تی

Nor does Stoicism encourage passivity.

.وه‌ ستۆیسیزم هانی سستی و ته‌مبه‌ڵی نادات

The idea is that only people who have cultivated

بیرۆكه‌كه‌ ئه‌وه‌یه‌

ته‌نها خه‌ڵكانێك مه‌شق له‌سه‌ر چاكه‌ و كۆنترۆڵی خۆیان ده‌كه‌ن ده‌توانن

virtue and self-control in themselves can bring positive change in others.

One of the most famous Stoic writers was also one of Rome's greatest emperors.

یه‌كێك له‌ نوسه‌ره‌ به‌ناوبانگه‌كانی ستۆیك

یه‌كێك بووه‌ .له‌ ئیمپراتۆره‌ مه‌زنه‌كانی ڕۆم

Over the course of his 19-year reign,

Stoicism gave Marcus Aurelius the resolve to lead the Empire through two major wars,

ستۆیسزم وای له‌ ماركۆس ئاریلس كرد

while dealing with the loss of many of his children.

Centuries later, Marcus's journals would guide and comfort Nelson Mandela

دوای چه‌ندین سه‌ده‌، ژۆرناڵه‌كانی ماركۆس بوونه‌ ڕێبه‌رو دڵنه‌وای بۆ نێلسۆن ماندێلا

through his 27-year imprisonment

لەماوەی 27 ساڵه‌ی به‌ندكردنی دا

during his struggle for racial equality in South Africa.

له‌ماوه‌ی هه‌وڵه‌كانیدا .بۆیه‌كسانی ڕه‌گه‌زی له‌ باشوری ئه‌فریقا

After his release and eventual victory, Mandela stressed peace and reconciliation,

دوای ئازاد بوون و سه‌ركه‌وتنی له‌ كۆتایدا ،ماندێلا جه‌ختی له‌سه‌ر ئاشته‌وایی ده‌كرد

believing that while the injustices of the past couldn't be changed,

،باوه‌ڕی وابوو نادادی ڕابردوو ناگۆردرێت

his people could confront them in the present

خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌ی ده‌توانن ڕووبه‌ڕوی ببنه‌وه‌ له‌ ئێستادا

and seek to build a better, more just future.

وە گه‌ڕان بۆ بنیات نانێكی باشتر .و داهاتویه‌كی یه‌كسانیتر

Stoicism was an active school of philosophy for several centuries

ستۆیسیزم قوتابخانه‌یه‌كی چاڵاك بووه‌ بۆماوه‌ی چه‌ندین سه‌ده‌

in Greece and Rome.

As a formal institution, it faded away,

but its influence has continued to this day.

Christian theologians, such as Thomas Aquinas,

have admired and adopted its focus on the virtues,

and there are parallels between Stoic Ataraxia, or tranquility of mind,

and the Buddhist concept of Nirvana.

One particularly influential Stoic was the philosopher Epictetus

who wrote that suffering stems

not from the events in our lives, but from our judgements about them.

This has resonated strongly with modern psychology

and the self-help movement.

For example, rational emotive behavioral therapy

focuses on changing the self-defeating attitudes

There's also Viktor Frankl's logotherapy.

Informed by Frankl's own time as a concentration camp prisoner,

logotherapy is based on the Stoic principle

that we can harness our will power to fill our lives with meaning,

even in the bleakest situations.
