As the sun rises on a fall morning in 55 BCE,

Camma lays two pigeons on the altar at the center of her village.

She offers a prayer to Matrona mother goddess of the Earth,

Then, she wrings the birds’ necks

and cuts them open to examine their entrails for divine messages.

Camma is a druid.

کاما ژنە کاھینێک بوو.

This means she conducts religious rites,

ئەمە واتە ئەو نەریتە ئاینییەکانی ئەنجام دەدا.

but she also serves as a judge, healer, and scholar,

و ھەروەھا خزمەتی دەکرد وەک دادوەر، پزیشک و زانا،

teaching children and mediating conflict between Celtic tribes.

She began her studies as a child,

Now, she is a resident Druid of the Veneti tribe

in a small farming village near the western coast of Gaul,

in what is now France.

Since returning to Gaul, she has received many offers of marriage–

This morning, the omens are troubling.

They tell of war and strife, as they often have in recent months.

ئەوان پێشبینی شەڕ و ناکۆکی دەکەن، وەک ئەوەی ڕوویدا بوو لەم مانگانەی دواییدا.

A neighboring tribe, the Redones,

ھۆزێکی دراوسێ، ڕێدۆنسەکان،

have raided their village and stolen cattle in broad daylight twice this fall.

ھێرشیان کرد بووە سەر گوندەکەیان دوو جار لەم زستانەو ئاژەڵەکانیان بە ڕۆژی ڕوناک دزی بوو.

The children have gathered around to watch her work.

Camma plays her lyre and sings to them.

She weaves stories of the powerful kings who once ruled their land –

brave warriors who were slain naked in combat but who will be reborn,

as will all the Celts.

وەک ھەمو سێڵتیەکانی تر.

When the children go off to help in the fields,

کاتێ منداڵەکان دەچوون بۆ ئیش لە کێڵگەکان،

Camma heads across the village to visit an old woman with an eye infection.

کاما چوو بەرەو گوندەکە بۆ سەردانی کردنی ژنێکی پیر کە ئازاری چاوی ھەبوو.

On the way to the old woman’s hut,

لە ڕێگە بۆ لای کوخی ژنە پیرەکە،

she passes men salting pigs for the winter food supply

ئەو بە لای پیاوانێکدا تێپەڕی کە بەرازیان سوێر دەکرد وەک ئازووقەی زستان

and women weaving clothing from dyed wool.

و ژنانێک کە لە خوری ڕەنگدار جلیان دەچنی.

She delivers a remedy for the injured eye–

ئەو دەرمانی چاوە بریندارەکەی کرد

it’s made from mistletoe, a sacred healing plant,

کە دەرمانەکە دروست کرا بوو لە میسلتەو، ڕوەکی پیرۆزی چارەسەر کردن،

but deadly if used incorrectly.

بەڵام کوشندەیە گەر بە نادروستی بەکار بێت.

From there, Camma visits the chieftain to discuss the omens.

لەوێ، کاما سەردانی سەرۆک ھۆزەکەی کرد بۆ گفتوگۆ کردن لەسەر پێشبینیەکان.

She convinces him to go and talk through their problems with their neighbors.

و قایلی کرد کە بڕوات و قسە بکات لەسەر کێشەکانیان لەگەڵ ھۆزەکانی دراوسێ.

Accompanied by several warriors,

بە ھاوڕێیەتی چەندین شەڕکەر،

they head through the forest and demand a meeting

ئەوان بەناو دارستاندا ڕۆشتن و داوای کۆبونەوەیان کرد

outside the Redones’ village walls.

لە دەرەوەی دیوارەکانی گوندی ڕێدۆنێسەکان.

The Redones’ representatives bring their own druid,

نوێنەرانی ڕێدۆنێسەکان کاھینەکەی خۆیان ھێنا،

who Camma recognizes from the annual gathering in central Gaul

کە کاما دەیناسی بەھۆی کۆبونەوە ساڵانە لە گۆوڵی ناوەڕاست

where head druids are elected.

لەو شوێنەی سەرۆکی کاھینەکان ھەڵدەبژێردرێت.

The chieftains immediately begin to argue and threaten each other.

سەرۆک ھۆزەکان یەکسەر دەستیان کرد بە ھەڕەشە کردن لە یەکتر.

Camma steps between the opposing sides to stop them from fighting—

کاما چوە نێوەندی دو لایەنە دژەکە و وەستاندنی لە شەڕ کردن

they must honor her authority.

ئەوان دەبێ ڕێز لە دەسەڵاتەکانی کاما بگرن.

Finally, the Redones agree to pay Camma’s tribe several cattle.

In spite of this resolution, Camma still feels uneasy on the long walk home.

As they approach the village walls, a bright streak shoots across the sky—

another omen, but of what?

مژدانەیەکی تر، بەڵام ھی چی؟

Back home, Camma sits among the elders for her evening meal of porridge,

لە ماڵەوە، کاما دانیشت لە نێوەندی پیرەکان بۆ خواردنی شۆرباکەی نانی ئێوارە،

a bit of meat, and a cup of wine.

و کەمێک گۆشت و، کوپێک شەراب.

While they were out during the day, an intercepted parchment arrived.

ئەو کاتەی ئەوان بە ڕۆژ لە دەرەوە بوون، نوسراوێکی ناڕەزایی گەشتە دەستی

Camma recognizes the writing immediately.

کاما یەکسەر نوسینەکەی خوێندەوە

Although the druids are forbidden from recording their knowledge,

ھەر چەندە قەدەغە بوو کاھینەکان زانیاریەکانی خۆیان تۆمار بکەن،

she and many other young druids can read Latin.

کەچی کاما و زۆر کاھینی تر دەیان توانی لاتینی بخوێننەوە.

From the message, she learns that the Romans are drawing closer to their lands.

لە نامەکەوە، کاما زانی ڕۆمانەکان نزیک دەبنەوە لە زەویەکانیان.

Some of the elders say that the tribe should flee to the nearby hills and hide,

ھەندێک لە پیرەکان وتیان کە ھۆزەکە پێویستە ھەڵبێن بۆ گردە نزیکەکان و خۆیان بشارنەوە،

but Camma counsels them to trust in the gods and remain in their home.

بەڵام کاما ئامۆژگاری کردن کە متمانە بە خوداکان بکەن و لە ماڵەكانیان بمێننەوە.

Privately, she has her doubts.

بەڵام خۆی گومانی ھەبوو.

Should the Romans reach them, her power to help might be limited.

ئەگەر ڕۆمانەکان پێیان بگەن، ھێزی ئەو بۆ یارمەتی دانیان لەوانەیە سنوردار بێت.

Unlike the other Celtic tribes,

پێچەوانەی ھۆزەکانی تری سەڵتیک،

Roman legions have no regard for the druids’ sacred role as peacemakers.

Before going to bed,

she observes the course of the planets and consults her charts,

trying to make sense of the meteor she saw earlier.

The signs are converging on a larger threat than their neighbors.
