On a small island in the middle of the Irish Sea,

आयरिश के बीच मे एक छोटे से द्वीप पर

fortresses preside over the rugged shores.

किले बीहड़ तटों की अध्यक्षता करते है

This unlikely location was the birthplace of a medieval empire

यह असंभवित स्थान एक मध्ययुगीन साम्राज्य का जन्मस्थान था

that lasted 200 years, ruled by a dynasty of sea kings.

जो 200 साल तक चला, समुद्री राजाओं के एक राजवंश द्वारा शासित।

The first of these kings was Godred Crovan,

यहा के पहले राजे गोड्ड क्रोवन थे ,

a notorious warlord descended from Irish and Viking rulers.

एक कुख्यात सिपहसालार उतरा आयरिश और वाइकिंग शासकों से।

Starting in 1079, Godred consolidated power

1079 की शरुआत मे,गोदरेड शक्ति समेकित करने लगा,आदमी और जड़ी-बूटियों के टापू के ऊपर।

over the Isle of Man and the Hebrides,

a collection of islands off the west coast of Scotland.

जो की स्कॉटलैंड के पक्षतिमी तट से द्वीपों का एक संग्रह है

He seized control of important sea routes between the British Isles,

उसने इसलेस,स्कंदिनवीय और नॉर्थअटलांटिक के बीच के समुद्री मार्गों पर अपना शासन जमाया|

Scandinavia, and the North Atlantic.

A turbulent period followed Godred’s death,

गोदरेड की मृत्यु के बाद, एक अशांत अवधि शुरू हुई

characterised by invasions from Norway and Ireland,

जिस का कारण नॉर्वे और आयरलैंड दुआरा किए गए आक्रमण है

and intense feuding between princes.

इसके साथ ही साथ राजकुमारों के बीच तीव्र झगड़े हुए|

But his descendants held on to power,

फिर भी उसके उतरदिकारी शासन मे रहे

building coastal fortresses, roving the seaways,

तटिय महल बनाए तथा समुद्री मार्गों पर घूमना

throwing themselves into epic battles,

बहुत शातिर जंगे लड़ी

and consolidating control over an impressive maritime kingdom.

और शक्ति समेकित करने लगे अपने समुद्री राज्य मे |

The inhabitants of this kingdom had both Gaelic and Norse roots,

इस राज्य मे दोनों गेलिक तथा नोरसे लोग है

and many probably spoke both languages.

और कुछ तो दोनों भाषाए बोलते है |

Those on the Isle of Man were known as the Manx people,

आइल मेन के लोग, मानक्स पीपल के नाम से जाने जाते है

while those in the Hebrides were known as Islanders or People of the Isles.

जो हेबरीदेस मे रहते है ,उन्हे इसलन्डर्स तथा पीपल ऑफ थे इसलेस कहे जाते है|

Though we still don’t know for sure how many there were,

लेकिन, हमे उनकी पूरी गिनती नहीं पता

we do know this relatively small group had an outsize impact on the region.

पर यह जानते है की गिनती मे कम होने के कारण भी उनका जगह पर बहुत प्रभाव था

Perched on cliffs with sweeping views and safe harbors,

व्यापक विचारों के साथ चट्टानों पर बैठे और सुरक्षित बंदरगाह,

seaside fortresses helped the kings control shipping, commerce, and resources.

समुदी किनारे पर किलो के कारण राजाओ को वायापर करने मे आसानी हुई |

The empire commanded vast fleets of Viking-style long ships,

साम्राज्य ने वाइकिंग शैली के विशाल बेड़े की लंबे जहाजों की कमान संभाली

which they used for trading, raiding, and plundering the seas.

जो उन्होंने व्ययपार तथा लूट पात के लिए प्रयोग की |

Observing this prowess, many neighboring rulers sought their aid.

इस कौशल को देखते हुए, कई पड़ोसी शासकों ने उनकी मदद मांगी

The brothers Rognvald and Olaf each solved neighbors’ maritime woes:

भाई रोगंवाल्ड और ऑलफ दोनों ने अपने पड़ोसी की समुद्री समस्याओं को हल किया|

King Rognvald supplied military assistance to the Scottish king,

राजा रोगनवाल्ड ने स्कॉटिश राजा को सैन्य सहायता की आपूर्ति की

and King Olaf’s forces served as a Coast Guard

राजा ओलाफ की सेना ने तट रक्षक के रूप में कार्य किया

at the English King Henry III’s request— for a hefty fee.

जब अंग्रेजी राजा हेनरी तीसरे ने मोटी फीस की मांग करी

The sea kings also sparred with their powerful neighbors,

समुद्री राजाो ने कई शक्तिशाली पड़ोसी के साथ युद्ध किया,

but they had a particularly bitter rivalry with another dynasty in their own isles:

उनके अपने द्वीपों में एकऔर राजवंश के साथ विशेष रूप से कड़वी प्रतिद्वंद्विता थी:

a line of rulers in the Hebrides.

हेब्राइड्स में शासकों की एक राज्य |

In the 1150s, a chieftain of this line, Somerled,

1150 मे इस लाइन का एक सरदार, सोमेरलद ,

defeated the Manx King, his brother-in-law, in a naval battle

ने अपने साले को समुद्री युद्ध मे पराजित किया

and formed a rival Kingdom of the Isles, fracturing the old kingdom.

और द्वीपों का प्रतिद्वंद्वी साम्राज्य बनाया,पुराने साम्राज्य में चोट पहुँचाकर

This began a century-long rivalry between Somerled’s line,

जिससे एक दशक लंबा युद्ध शुरू हुआ, सोमेरलेड की लाइन के बीच मे

who ruled the southern and central Hebrides,

जिसने दक्षिणी और मध्य हेबरीदेस पर शासन किया

and the Manx Kings, who ruled the Isle of Man and northern Hebrides,

मनक्स ने आइल ऑफ मन, उत्तरी हेबरीदे पर शासन किया समुद्र मार्गों कोनियंत्रित करने केलिए

to control the seaways.

Family feuds often blossomed into bitter civil wars.

पारिवारिक कलह अक्सर गृहयुद्धों में बदल जाती है

In 1223, King Rognvald sent a letter to his son

1223 मे राजा रोगंवाल्ड ने अपने पुत्र को लिखित पत्र भेजा

commanding him to murder his uncle Olaf.

उसे अपने चाचा ऑलफ का कतल करने का हुकम दिया

When Olaf discovered the plot, he launched a vicious attack on his nephew,

लेकिन जब ऑलफ को पता चला,तो उसने, अपने बतहीजे पर एक जानलेवा हमला किया

blinding and mutilating him.

हमेशा के लिए अपाहज कर दिया|

After Rognvald’s death several years later,

रोगंवाल की मौत के कुछ साल बाद

people realized the letter ordering the attack might have been forged.

लोगों को लगा की वो हमला करवाने वाला जाली पत्र हो सकता है|

The Manx kings attempted to resolve disagreements at Tynwald,

मैनक्स किंग्स ने टाइनवाल्ड में, असहमति को सुलझाने का प्रयास किया

an open-air parliament centered on a mound,

एक खुली हवा में संसद एक टीले पर केंद्रित,

where assemblies ruled on matters of justice and other issues.

जहा पर विधनसभाए, न्याय तथा अन्य मुद्दे पर चर्चा करते थे|

Such sites were commonly used in the Viking world

ऐसे स्थल का आमतौर पर उपयोग वाइकिंग दुनिया में किया जाता था

for resolving anything from local disputes to matters involving kings.

आमतौर विवादों से लेकर राजो से सभन्दित मसले,इस जगह सुलजाये जाते है|

These meetings didn’t always go smoothly—

लेकिन ऐसी बैठक हमेशा निर्बाध नहीं जाती थी

sometimes violence erupted,

कभी कभार हिंसा उटपन होती थी

and in 1237, two rival factions squabbled to the point

और 1237 मे दो दुश्मनी गुट टीनवाल्ड की बैठक के मामले मे आपस मे भिड़ गए|

of breaking up the assembly at Tynwald.

The four-tiered mound at Tynwald survives to this day,

टीनवाल्ड में चार-मंजिल टीले इस दिन तक जीवित है,

and the modern Manx parliament still holds an annual meeting there.

और मानक्स संसद अभी भी , साल मे एक बारी बैठक रखता है

In 1248, King Harald of Man died in a shipwreck

1248 मे हेराल्ड राजा ऑफ मन एक शिपरेकमे मार गया|

and was succeeded by his brother.

उसका भाई उसका उत्तरदिकारी था|

Weeks into the new king’s reign, a rebel knight assassinated him.

नए राजा के शासनकाल के कुछ हफ्ते बाद ही, एक विद्रोही शूरवीर ने उसकी हत्या कर दी ।

His brother Magnus died in 1265 at Castle Rushen— without an heir.

उसका भाई मगनूस 1265 मे रुषेण महल मे मर गया,वो भी बिना किसी उत्तरदिकारी के|

According to one scribe, his death marked the day that

एक मुंशी के अनुसार, उसकी मौत के दिन राजाो ने मन पर शासान करना बंद करदिया|

“kings ceased to reign in Man.”

Scotland annexed Man and the Isles the next year, in 1266.

स्कॉटलैंड ने मन और इसलेस पर अगले ही साल कब्जा करदिया 1266 मे|

We know about the exploits of the sea kings primarily from a chronicle

हमे समुद्री राजाओ के कारनामों के बारे मुख्य रूप से एक क्रॉनिकल से पता चलता है

written by Christian scribes living on the Isle of Man,

जो की आइल ऑफ मन मे रहने वाले क्रिश्चियन लेखकों ने लिखा है

and from the praise poems composed to celebrate the kings’ victories.

और हमे यह राजाओ की जीत पर बनी स्तुति कविताओ से पता चलता है|

Today, although the sea kings are long gone,

आज चाहे समुद्रीराजे कभ के चले गए पर उनकी उपस्थिति नक़्क़ाशीद बनी हुई हैपरिदृश्य पर।

their presence remains etched onto the landscape.
