As the morning sun shines on the Golden Gate Palace,

وەک درەوشانەوەی خۆر لە بەیانیدا لەسەر دەروازەی زێڕینی کۆشکدا،

brother and sister Hisham and Asma prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

برایەک و خوشکێک هیشام و ئەسما خۆیان ئامادە دەکرد بۆ گەشتی ژیانیان.

It is 791 CE, and the Abbasid Caliphate is at the height of its power,

ساڵی ٧٩١زایینیە، هەروەها خەلافەتی عەباسی لە لوتکەی بەهێزی دایە،

stretching from India to North Africa.

لە هیندستانەوە درێژ دەبێتەوە تاکو باکوری ئەفریقا

With over half a million inhabitants,

لەگەڵ سەروو نیو ملیۆن دانیشتووانەوە

its capital city of Madinat al-Salaam, also known as Baghdad,

is the largest in the Islamic Empire, possibly the world.

And it's only 30 years old.

Asma and Hisham will leave at sunset for the hajj,

ئەسما و هیشام لە کاتی خۆرهەڵاتن بەڕێ دەکەون بۆ حەج

the holy pilgrimage to Mecca.

بۆ سەردانیکردنێکی پیرۆز بۆ مەککە

Most people make the journey when they’re older and wealthier,

زۆربەی خەڵک کاتێک گەشت دەکەن کاتێک گەورەن و باری دارییان باشە

but Hisham and Asma have wanted to make this journey together

بەڵام هیشام و ئەسما دەیانویست ئەم گەشتە بەیەکەوە بکەن

since they were children.

لەوکاتەوەی کە منداڵ بوون

They intend to travel with the big hajj caravan

ئەوان بە نیازی ئەوەن گەشت بکەن لەگەڵ کاروانێکی گەورەی حەج

that is protected by the caliph soldiers.

کە لە لایەن سەربازانی خەلیفەوە دەپارێزران

The caliph Al-Rashid himself is also traveling with the caravan this year.

کە خەلیفە ڕەشید خۆشی گەشتی دەکرد لەو ساڵەدا لەگەڵ کاروانەکەدا

The hajj caravan is like a massive mobile city,

کاروانەکەی حەج وەکو شارێکی گەورەی گەڕۆکە

with soldiers, cooks, doctors and merchants, servants and enslaved people.

سەرباز،چێشتلێنەر،دکتۆر لەگەڵ بازرگان،خزمەتکار،خەڵکی کۆیلە

The journey is long, with dangers like disease, robbery, and dehydration.

گەشتەکە درێژە، وە مەترسی هەیە وەکو نەخۆشی،دزی،وشکبوونەوەی جەستە

Because of these perils, Hisham and Asma want to travel with the larger group—

لەبەر ئەو مەترسیانە، هیشام و ئەسما دەیانەوێت لەگەڵ گروپە گەورەکەدا گەشت بکەن

but a last-minute mishap threatens to undo months of careful planning.

بەڵام لە کۆتا خولەکدا ڕووداوێک هەڕەشەی هەڵوەشاندنەوەی چەند مانگێک لە پلاندانان

When the siblings visit the market to check on the supplies they’ve purchased,

کاتێک خوشک و براکە سەردانی بازاڕ دەکەن بۆ پشکنینی ئەو کەلوپەلانەی کە کڕیویانە

the merchant tells them one of their camels has fallen ill,

بازرگانەکە پێیان دەڵێت یەکێک لە وشترەکانیان نەخۆش کەوتووە

and he doesn't have any replacements.

هەروەها ئەو هیچ شوێنگرەوەیەکی نییە

Without the camel, the siblings won't be able to depart with the caravan.

بەبێ وشتر، خوشک و براکە ناتوانن لەگەڵ کاروانەکەدا بڕۆن.

They search the marketplace,

ئەوان لە بازاڕەکەدا دەگەڕان،

bustling with people from different ethnic backgrounds,

قەرەباڵغی لە خەڵکی جیاواز لە ڕووی نەتەوەییەوە

such as Persians, Arabs, Turks, Africans, and Indians,

وەکو فارسەکان،عەرەبەکان،تورکەکان ئەفریقیەکان، وە هیندییەکان

and following different religions like Islam, Judaism,

هەروەها شوێنکەوتووی ئاینی جیاواز وکو ئیسلام، جولەکە،

Christianity, and Zoroastrianism.

مەسیحی، هەروەها زەردەشتی.

The market sells everything from locally made pottery, Egyptian glass,

بازاڕەکە هەموو شتێکی درووستکراوی ناوخۆیی دەفرۆشێت گۆزە، گڵاسی میسڕی

and paper from Samarkand, to Chinese silk, gold from Africa,

and fox fur from the distant north.

وە فەرووی ڕێوی لە باکوری دوورەوە.

But with the caravan leaving tonight, no one has a camel available.

بەڵام کاروانەکە شەو بەڕێدەکەوێت، بەڵام کەس وشترێکی نییە

Though the hajj is primarily a religious journey,

هەرچەندە حەج بە شێوەیەکی سەرەکی گەشتێکی ئاینییە

the siblings have other, personal hopes for it.

خوشک و براکە هیوای کەسێتی خۆیان هەیە بۆ ئەوە

Hisham and Asma come from a wealthy family and both had tutors as children.

هیشام و ئەسما لە خێزانێکی دەوڵەمەندەوە هاتبوون لە منداڵیدا وانەبێژیان هەبوو

Hisham is studying to become a scholar,

هیشام دەی خوێند تا ببێتە زانا

progressing from Arabic grammar to Islamic law and Persian love poetry,

پێشکەوتن لە ڕێزمانی عەرەبی بۆ یاسای ئیسلامی و شیعری خۆشەویستی فارسی

then to Indian-inspired mathematics and Greek philosophy and medicine.

پاشان بۆ بیرکاری ئیلهام بەخشی هیندی و فەلسەفە و پزیشکی یۆنانی.

With scholars from all over the empire traveling to Mecca

لەگەڵ زانایانی سەرتاسەری ئیمپڕاتۆریەت کە گەشت دەکەن بۆ مەککە

and important intellectual centers on the way,

وە ناوەندە هزریە گرنگەکان لە ڕێگادا

the hajj is a great learning opportunity.

حەج دەرفەتێکی مەزنی فێربوونە.

Asma, meanwhile, has literary ambitions.

ئەسما، لە کاتێکدا خولیای ئەدەبی هەیە

As a woman, a life of formal scholarship is not available to her.

وەک ئافرەتێک، ژیانێکی خوێندنی زانستی بۆ ئەو بەردەست نییە

Instead, she is honing her skills as a poet.

لە جیاتی ئەوە، ئەو خەریکی وربوونەوەیە لە تواناکانی وەک شاعیرێک

She hopes to compose poetry about the journey

ئەو هیوادارە شیعرێک بنووسێت لەسەر گەشتەکە

that will catch the attention of important women in the city,

کە ئەوە سەرەنجی ئافرەتە گرنگەکانی شارەکە ڕادەکێشێت

and maybe even Queen Zubayda.

وە لەوانەیە تەنانەت شاژنە زوبەیدەش.

The siblings split up to search for a camel.

خوشک و براکە لێکجیابوونەوە بۆ گەڕان بۆ وشترێک

Hisham heads toward the library complex to ask the scholars’ advice.

هیشام بەرەو کتێبخانەکە ڕۆشت بۆ ئەوەی داوای ئامۆژگاری لە زاناکان بکات

An elderly scholar studying Galen and Hippocrates

زانایەکی بەساڵاچوو کە گالێن و هیپۆکراتیسی دەخوێندەوە

tells him how to treat a wound.

فێری دەکات کە چؤن چارەسەری برینێک بکات

An Aramaic translator from Damascus shares a list of useful herbs

وە وەرگێڕێکی ئارامی لە دیمەشقەوە لیستێکی گیایە بەسوودەکانی پێدا

for upset stomach on the road.

بۆ تێکچوونی گەدە لە ڕێگادا

A Persian poet wants to share his latest poetry,

شاعیرێکی فارس ویستی نوێترین شیعری خۆی هاوبەشی پێ بکات

but Hisham doesn’t see how that will get him the camel for tonight,

بەڵام هیشام دەبینێت کە ئەوە وشترەکەی بۆ ئەم شەو بۆ بەدەست ناهێنێت

so he kindly refuses.

بۆیە بە میهرەبانیەوە ڕەتی دەکاتەوە

As he says goodbye, they give him the names of important theology scholars

کاتێک ماڵئاوایی دەکات، ئەوان ناوی گرنگترین زانایانی خوداناسی پێ دەدەن

to visit in Medina, on the way to Mecca.

تا سەردانیان بکات لە مەدینە، لە ڕێگەی دا بۆ مەککە.

But to get there, he’ll need a camel.

بەڵام بۆ گەیشتن بۆ ئەوێ، ئەو پێویستی بە وشترێکە

Meanwhile, Asma visits an older, married cousin.

لەم نێوەندەدا، ئەسما سەردانی ئاموزایەکی لە خۆی گەورەتر دەکات کە شوی کردووە

An enslaved girl opens the door, and takes Asma to the women’s quarters,

کچێکی کۆیلە دەرگا دەکاتەوە، ئەسما دەبات بۆ شوێنی ئافرەتان

کە پیان ناتوانن بچنە ژوورەوە

where men cannot enter.

Her cousin wants to hear Asma’s latest poetry,

ئامۆزاکەی دەیەوێت گوێی لە نوێترین شیعری ئەسما ببێت

but Asma tells her she’s in a hurry and explains their predicament.

بەڵام ئەسما پێێ دەڵێت ئەم پەلەیەتی هەروەها بارودۆخە سەختەکەی خۆیانی بۆ ڕوون دەکاتەوە

She’s in luck— her cousin’s husband has a camel to offer them.

ئەو بە بەخت بوو هاوسەری ئامۆزاکەی وشتری هەبوو تا پێشکەشیان بکات

With their arrangements secure at last, they make their final preparations.

لە کۆتاییدا کە ڕێکخستەنەکانیان مسۆگەرە، ئەوان دوا ئامادەکاری خۆیان دەکەن.

At the designated times for men and women,

لە کاتێکی دیاریکراودا بۆ پیاوان و ئافرەتان

each performs a ritual ablution at one of Baghdad’s many public bathhouses.

هەر یەکەیان دەست نوێژ دەشۆن لە یەکێک لە حەمامە گشتیەکانی بەغداد دا

As the sun sets, the city’s criers announce the caravan’s departure,

لەگەڵ ئاوابوونی خۆر، بانگدەرانی شارەکە ڕۆشتنی کاروانەکە ڕا دەگەیەنن

and the townspeople flock to watch the pilgrims leave.

وە خەڵکی شارەکە بە لێشاو سەیری ڕۆشتنی حاجییەکان دەکەن.
