As the morning sun shines on the Golden Gate Palace,

brother and sister Hisham and Asma prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

It is 791 CE, and the Abbasid Caliphate is at the height of its power,

is the largest in the Islamic Empire, possibly the world.

And it's only 30 years old.

Asma and Hisham will leave at sunset for the hajj,

the holy pilgrimage to Mecca.

Most people make the journey when they’re older and wealthier,

The hajj caravan is like a massive mobile city,

with soldiers, cooks, doctors and merchants, servants and enslaved people.

जिसमें सैनिक, रसोइए, चिकित्सक, व्यापारी, नौकर और गुलाम, सब शामिल हैं।

The journey is long, with dangers like disease, robbery, and dehydration.

यात्रा लम्बी, और बीमारी, चोरी, और निर्जलीकरण जैसे ख़तरों से भरी है।

Because of these perils, Hisham and Asma want to travel with the larger group—

but a last-minute mishap threatens to undo months of careful planning.

When the siblings visit the market to check on the supplies they’ve purchased,

जब भाई-बहन अपना ख़रीदा हुआ समान देखने बाज़ार जाते हैं

the merchant tells them one of their camels has fallen ill,

and he doesn't have any replacements.

और उसके पास दूसरा ऊँट देने के लिए नहीं है।

Without the camel, the siblings won't be able to depart with the caravan.

ऊँट के बिना, भाई-बहन कारवाँ के साथ नहीं निकल पाएँगे।

They search the marketplace,

वह उस बाज़ार में ढूँढने लगते हैं

bustling with people from different ethnic backgrounds,

such as Persians, Arabs, Turks, Africans, and Indians,

The market sells everything from locally made pottery, Egyptian glass,

But with the caravan leaving tonight, no one has a camel available.

Though the hajj is primarily a religious journey,

the siblings have other, personal hopes for it.

An elderly scholar studying Galen and Hippocrates

tells him how to treat a wound.

An Aramaic translator from Damascus shares a list of useful herbs

for upset stomach on the road.

A Persian poet wants to share his latest poetry,

पर हिशाम को समझ नहीं आ रहा कि इस सब से उसे आज रात के लिए ऊँट कैसे मिलेगा

but Hisham doesn’t see how that will get him the camel for tonight,

so he kindly refuses.

As he says goodbye, they give him the names of important theology scholars

जब वह उन्हें अलविदा कहता है

to visit in Medina, on the way to Mecca.

But to get there, he’ll need a camel.

Meanwhile, Asma visits an older, married cousin.

वहीं, अस्मा स्वयं से बड़ी एक विवाहित चचेरी बहन से मिलने जाती है।

An enslaved girl opens the door, and takes Asma to the women’s quarters,

एक ग़ुलाम लड़की द्वार खोलती है और अस्मा को महिला आवास में ले जाती है

where men cannot enter.

जहाँ पुरुषों का आना बाधित है।

Her cousin wants to hear Asma’s latest poetry,

उसकी चचेरी बहन अस्मा की नवीनतम कविता सुनना चाहती है

but Asma tells her she’s in a hurry and explains their predicament.

पर अस्मा उसे बताती है कि वह जल्दी में है और अपनी कठिन परिस्थिति समझाती है।

She’s in luck— her cousin’s husband has a camel to offer them.

उसका भाग्य अच्छा है -- उसकी चचेरी बहन के पति के पास उसको देने के लिए एक ऊँट है।

With their arrangements secure at last, they make their final preparations.

अन्ततः सारी व्यवस्था पूर्ण होने के बाद, दोनों अपनी अन्तिम तैयारियाँ करते हैं।

At the designated times for men and women,

पुरुषों और स्त्रियों के लिए नियुक्त समय पर

each performs a ritual ablution at one of Baghdad’s many public bathhouses.

दोनों बग़दाद के कई सार्वजनिक स्नानघरों में से एक में

प्रक्षालन का धार्मिक संस्कार पूरा करते हैं।

As the sun sets, the city’s criers announce the caravan’s departure,

and the townspeople flock to watch the pilgrims leave.
