confusing English words ‘hear’ and ‘listen’.

These two words are commonly confused in English,

Essas duas palavras são comumente confundidas em inglês,

but after watching this video you'll have  a good understanding of the difference and when to use these words.

Let’s get started.

Vamos começar.

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

Vamos começar com 'ouvir'. É um verbo irregular.

The past tense is ‘heard’.

O pretérito é 'ouvido'.

When you hear something, noise is coming into your ears.

Quando você ouve algo, o ruído chega aos seus ouvidos.

You are not focused on the noise.

Você não está focado no barulho.

When you are walking down the street,

Quando você está andando pela rua,

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

você pode ouvir pessoas conversando, você pode ouvir pássaros,

you may hear noise from the traffic,

você pode ouvir o barulho do trânsito,

you hear all different noises.

você ouve todos os tipos de ruídos.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Vejamos algumas frases de exemplo.

The first sentence says,

A primeira frase diz:

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

'Ouço alguém batendo na minha porta'.

So the sound of the knocking or the noise of the knocking is coming into your ears,

Portanto, o som da batida ou o barulho da batida chega aos seus ouvidos,

so you can hear it.

para que você possa ouvi-lo.

The next sentence says,

A próxima frase diz:

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

'Ele ouviu o trovão ontem à noite'.

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

O trovão é muito alto, então você ouvirá novamente o barulho do trovão.

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

Agora vou falar sobre 'ouvir'.

It is a regular verb

É um verbo regular

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

e o pretérito é 'ouvido'.

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

Geralmente é seguido pela preposição 'to'.

So you say ‘listen to’.

Então você diz 'ouça'.

When you are listening, you are trying to hear something.

Quando você está ouvindo, você está tentando ouvir alguma coisa.

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

Você está focado. E você realmente quer ouvir algo claramente.

You pay attention to listen.

Você presta atenção para ouvir.

Right now, you are listening to me.

Neste momento, você está me ouvindo.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Vejamos algumas frases de exemplo.

The first sentence says,

A primeira frase diz:

‘I always listen carefully to what my teacher says.’

'Sempre ouço com atenção o que meu professor diz.'

In this example, ‘listen’ is just like focusing or paying attention to.

Neste exemplo, 'ouvir' é como focar ou prestar atenção.

The next sentence says,

A próxima frase diz:

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

'Ela geralmente ouve música antes de dormir.'

This case also talks about focusing on the music with their ears.

Este caso também fala sobre focar na música com os ouvidos.

Now, let's do a checkup.

Agora, vamos fazer um check-up.

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

Precisamos usar 'ouvir' e 'ouvir'

to  fill in the blanks in this sentence.

para preencher os espaços em branco nesta frase.

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

Reserve um momento para pensar sobre onde usar 'ouvir' e onde usar 'ouvir'.

The sentence says,

A frase diz:

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'Estou _em branco_ na conversa deles.'

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

Qual deles significa prestar atenção ou focar?

That's ‘listen’.

Isso é 'ouvir'.

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

Portanto, precisamos colocar 'ouvir' no primeiro espaço em branco.

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'Estou _inexpressivo_ para a conversa deles.'

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

Você notará que diz 'eu sou'

so we need to use the present continuous tense ‘listening’.

, então precisamos usar o presente contínuo 'ouvindo'.

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

'Estou ouvindo a conversa deles.'

The second part of this sentence says,

A segunda parte desta frase diz:

‘but I  can't _blank_ exactly what they are saying.’

'mas não posso deixar de lado exatamente o que eles estão dizendo.'

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. 

Talvez esteja barulhento lá fora, então é difícil ouvir.

Remember, ‘hear’ means to take in the noise with your ears, 

Lembre-se, 'ouvir' significa captar o ruído com os ouvidos,

so the correct answer for the second part is

então a resposta correta para a segunda parte é

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

'Não consigo ouvir exatamente o que eles estão dizendo'.

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

Agora você sabe a diferença entre 'ouvir' e 'ouvir'.
