HEAR vs LISTEN Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

confusing English words ‘hear’ and ‘listen’.

These two words are commonly confused in English,

これら 2 つの単語は英語でよく混同されます

but after watching this video you'll have  a good understanding of the difference and when to use these words.

Let’s get started.

始めましょう。

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

まずは「聞く」ことから始めましょう。不規則動詞です。

The past tense is ‘heard’.

過去形は「聞いた」です。

When you hear something, noise is coming into your ears.

何かを聞くと、ノイズが耳に入ってきます。

You are not focused on the noise.

あなたは騒音に集中していません。

When you are walking down the street,

通りを歩いていると、

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

人々の話し声が聞こえたり、鳥の声が聞こえたり、

you may hear noise from the traffic,

車の騒音が聞こえたり、

you hear all different noises.

さまざまな音が聞こえることがあります。

Let’s look at some example sentences.

いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says,

最初の文は、

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

「誰かが私のドアをノックする音が聞こえます。」と述べています。

So the sound of the knocking or the noise of the knocking is coming into your ears,

つまり、ノックの音やノックの音は耳に入るので、

so you can hear it.

聞こえるのです。

The next sentence says,

次の文は

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

「彼は昨夜雷を聞いた。」となります。

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

雷がとても大きいので、また雷の音が聞こえます。

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

今回は「聞く」についてお話します。

It is a regular verb

これは規則動詞であり

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

、過去形は「聞いた」です。

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

通常、その後に前置詞「to」が続きます。

So you say ‘listen to’.

だから「聞いて」って言うんです。

When you are listening, you are trying to hear something.

聞いているとき、あなたは何かを聞こうとしています。

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

集中していますね。そして、あなたは本当に何かをはっきりと聞きたいのです。

You pay attention to listen.

あなたは聞くことに注意を払います。

Right now, you are listening to me.

今、あなたは私の話を聞いています。

Let’s look at some example sentences.

いくつかの例文を見てみましょう。

The first sentence says,

最初の文は、

‘I always listen carefully to what my teacher says.’

「私はいつも先生の言うことを注意深く聞きます。」と述べています。

In this example, ‘listen’ is just like focusing or paying attention to.

この例では、「聞く」とは集中したり注意を払ったりすることと同じです。

The next sentence says,

次の文は、

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

「彼女は通常、寝る前に音楽を聴きます。」と述べています。

This case also talks about focusing on the music with their ears.

この事例は、耳で音楽に集中することについても語っています。

Now, let's do a checkup.

では、検査をしてみましょう。

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

この文の空白を埋めるには、

to  fill in the blanks in this sentence.

「聞く」と「聞く」を使用する必要があります

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

。 「listen」をどこで使用するのか、「hear」をどこで使用するのかを少し考えてみましょう。

The sentence says,

その文には、

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

「私は彼らの会話に_空白_です」と書かれています。

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

注意するということと集中するということはどちらでしょうか？

That's ‘listen’.

それは「聞く」です。

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

したがって、最初の空白に「listen」を入れる必要があります。

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

「私は彼らの会話に_空白_です。」

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

「私は」と書かれている

so we need to use the present continuous tense ‘listening’.

ので、現在進行形の「聞いている」を使用する必要があること

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

がわかります 。 「私は彼らの会話を聞いています。」

The second part of this sentence says,

この文の 2 番目の部分には、

‘but I  can't _blank_ exactly what they are saying.’

「しかし、彼らが何を言っているのか正確には _空白_ できません。」と

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. 

書かれています。 外が騒がしくて聞こえにくいのかもしれません。

Remember, ‘hear’ means to take in the noise with your ears, 

「聞く」とは、騒音を耳で受け止めることを意味する

so the correct answer for the second part is

ため、2 番目の部分の正解は

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

「彼らが何を言っているのか正確に聞き取ることができない」であることを覚えておいてください。

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

これで、「聞く」と「聞く」の違いがわかりました。
