HEAR vs LISTEN Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

In this video, I’m going to talk  about two similar and sometimes  

এই ভিডিওতে, আমি দুটি অনুরূপ এবং কখনও কখনও

confusing English words ‘hear’ and ‘listen’.

বিভ্রান্তিকর ইংরেজি শব্দ 'হিয়ার' এবং 'লিসেন' সম্পর্কে কথা বলতে যাচ্ছি

These two words are commonly confused in English,

। এই দুটি শব্দ সাধারণত ইংরেজিতে বিভ্রান্ত হয়,

but after watching this video you'll have  a good understanding of the difference and when to use these words.

কিন্তু এই ভিডিওটি দেখার পরে আপনি পার্থক্য এবং কখন এই শব্দগুলি ব্যবহার করবেন তা ভালভাবে বুঝতে পারবেন।

Let’s get started.

চল শুরু করি.

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

'শুনে' দিয়ে শুরু করা যাক। এটি একটি অনিয়মিত ক্রিয়া।

The past tense is ‘heard’.

অতীত কাল হল 'শ্রুত'।

When you hear something, noise is coming into your ears.

কিছু শুনলেই কানে আওয়াজ আসছে।

You are not focused on the noise.

আপনি গোলমাল উপর মনোযোগ নিবদ্ধ না.

When you are walking down the street,

আপনি যখন রাস্তায় হাঁটছেন,

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

আপনি লোকেদের কথা বলতে শুনতে পারেন, আপনি পাখির শব্দ শুনতে পারেন,

you may hear noise from the traffic,

আপনি ট্র্যাফিক থেকে শব্দ শুনতে পারেন,

you hear all different noises.

আপনি বিভিন্ন শব্দ শুনতে পারেন।

Let’s look at some example sentences.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ বাক্য দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

'আমি শুনতে পাই কেউ আমার দরজায় কড়া নাড়ছে।'

So the sound of the knocking or the noise of the knocking is coming into your ears,

তাই ঠকঠক শব্দ বা ঠকঠক শব্দ আপনার কানে আসছে,

so you can hear it.

যাতে আপনি শুনতে পারেন।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

'তিনি গত রাতে বজ্র শুনেছেন।'

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

বজ্র খুব জোরে, তাই আবার বজ্রের আওয়াজ শুনতে পাবেন।

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

এখন, আমি 'শোন' সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

It is a regular verb

এটি একটি নিয়মিত ক্রিয়া

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

এবং অতীত কাল হল 'শ্রুত'।

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

এটি সাধারণত 'to' অব্যয় দ্বারা অনুসরণ করা হয়।

So you say ‘listen to’.

তাই আপনি বলুন 'শুনুন'।

When you are listening, you are trying to hear something.

আপনি যখন শুনছেন, আপনি কিছু শোনার চেষ্টা করছেন।

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

আপনি মনোযোগী. এবং আপনি সত্যিই স্পষ্টভাবে কিছু শুনতে চান.

You pay attention to listen.

আপনি মনোযোগ দিয়ে শুনুন।

Right now, you are listening to me.

এই মুহূর্তে, আপনি আমার কথা শুনছেন.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ বাক্য দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘I always listen carefully to what my teacher says.’

'আমার শিক্ষক যা বলেন আমি সবসময় মনোযোগ দিয়ে শুনি।'

In this example, ‘listen’ is just like focusing or paying attention to.

এই উদাহরণে, 'শুনুন' ঠিক ফোকাস করা বা মনোযোগ দেওয়ার মতো।

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

'সে সাধারণত ঘুমানোর আগে গান শোনে।'

This case also talks about focusing on the music with their ears.

এই ক্ষেত্রে তাদের কান সঙ্গে সঙ্গীত উপর ফোকাস সম্পর্কে কথা বলে.

Now, let's do a checkup.

এখন, একটি চেকআপ করা যাক.

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

এই বাক্যে শূন্যস্থান পূরণ করতে

to  fill in the blanks in this sentence.

আমাদের 'শ্রবণ' এবং 'শুনতে' ব্যবহার করতে হবে

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

। কোথায় 'শুনুন' ব্যবহার করতে হবে এবং কোথায় 'শ্রবণ' ব্যবহার করতে হবে তা নিয়ে ভাবতে একটু সময় নিন।

The sentence says,

বাক্যটি বলে,

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'আমি তাদের কথোপকথনে _খালি_ আছি।'

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

কোনটির দিকে মনোযোগ দেওয়া বা ফোকাস করা মানে?

That's ‘listen’.

এটাই 'শোন'।

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

তাই আমরা প্রথম ফাঁকা 'শুনুন' করা প্রয়োজন.

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'আমি তাদের কথোপকথনে _খালি_'

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

আপনি লক্ষ্য করবেন এটি 'আমি আছি' বলে

so we need to use the present continuous tense ‘listening’.

তাই আমাদের বর্তমান ক্রমাগত কাল 'শ্রবণ' ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

'আমি তাদের কথোপকথন শুনছি।'

The second part of this sentence says,

এই বাক্যের দ্বিতীয় অংশে বলা হয়েছে,

‘but I  can't _blank_ exactly what they are saying.’

'কিন্তু আমি ঠিক বলতে পারছি না তারা কী বলছে।'

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. 

হয়তো বাইরে কোলাহল হচ্ছে তাই শুনতে কষ্ট হচ্ছে।

Remember, ‘hear’ means to take in the noise with your ears, 

মনে রাখবেন, 'শুনুন' মানে আপনার কান দিয়ে আওয়াজ নেওয়া,

so the correct answer for the second part is

তাই দ্বিতীয় অংশের সঠিক উত্তর হল

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

'আমি ঠিক শুনতে পাচ্ছি না তারা কী বলছে।'

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

এখন আপনি 'শুনুন' এবং 'শোন' এর মধ্যে পার্থক্য জানেন।
