HEAR vs LISTEN Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

In this video, I’m going to talk  about two similar and sometimes

confusing English words ‘hear’ and ‘listen’.

These two words are commonly confused in English,

Queste due parole sono comunemente confuse in inglese,

but after watching this video you'll have  a good understanding of the difference and when to use these words.

Let’s get started.

Iniziamo.

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

Cominciamo con "ascoltare". È un verbo irregolare.

The past tense is ‘heard’.

Il passato è "ascoltato".

When you hear something, noise is coming into your ears.

Quando senti qualcosa, il rumore arriva nelle tue orecchie.

You are not focused on the noise.

Non sei concentrato sul rumore.

When you are walking down the street,

Quando cammini per strada,

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

potresti sentire delle persone che parlano, potresti sentire degli uccelli,

you may hear noise from the traffic,

potresti sentire il rumore del traffico,

you hear all different noises.

potresti sentire tutti i rumori diversi.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Diamo un'occhiata ad alcune frasi di esempio.

The first sentence says,

La prima frase dice:

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

"Sento qualcuno che bussa alla mia porta".

So the sound of the knocking or the noise of the knocking is coming into your ears,

Quindi il suono del bussare o il rumore del bussare arriva alle tue orecchie,

so you can hear it.

così puoi sentirlo.

The next sentence says,

La frase successiva dice:

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

"Ha sentito il tuono ieri sera". Il

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

tuono è molto forte, quindi di nuovo sentirai il rumore del tuono.

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

Ora parlerò di "ascolta".

It is a regular verb

È un verbo regolare

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

e il passato è "ascoltato".

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

Di solito è seguito dalla preposizione "a".

So you say ‘listen to’.

Quindi dici "ascolta".

When you are listening, you are trying to hear something.

Quando ascolti, stai cercando di sentire qualcosa.

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

Sei concentrato. E vuoi davvero sentire qualcosa chiaramente.

You pay attention to listen.

Fai attenzione ad ascoltare.

Right now, you are listening to me.

In questo momento, mi stai ascoltando.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Diamo un'occhiata ad alcune frasi di esempio.

The first sentence says,

La prima frase dice:

‘I always listen carefully to what my teacher says.’

"Ascolto sempre attentamente ciò che dice il mio insegnante".

In this example, ‘listen’ is just like focusing or paying attention to.

In questo esempio, "ascoltare" è proprio come concentrarsi o prestare attenzione a.

The next sentence says,

La frase successiva dice:

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

"Di solito ascolta la musica prima di andare a letto".

This case also talks about focusing on the music with their ears.

Questo caso parla anche di concentrarsi sulla musica con le orecchie.

Now, let's do a checkup.

Ora facciamo un controllo.

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

Dobbiamo usare "ascolta" e "ascolta"

to  fill in the blanks in this sentence.

per riempire gli spazi vuoti in questa frase.

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

Prenditi un momento per pensare a dove utilizzare "ascolta" e dove utilizzare "ascolta".

The sentence says,

La frase dice:

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

"Sono _vuoto_ rispetto alla loro conversazione".

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

Quale dei due significa prestare attenzione o su cui concentrarsi?

That's ‘listen’.

Questo è "ascolta".

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

Quindi dobbiamo inserire "ascolta" nel primo spazio vuoto.

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

'Sono _vuoto_ per la loro conversazione.'

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

Noterai che dice 'I am'

so we need to use the present continuous tense ‘listening’.

quindi dobbiamo usare il presente continuo 'ascolto'.

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

"Sto ascoltando la loro conversazione".

The second part of this sentence says,

La seconda parte di questa frase dice: "

‘but I  can't _blank_ exactly what they are saying.’

ma non posso _ignorare_ esattamente quello che stanno dicendo".

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. 

Forse fuori c'è rumore, quindi è difficile sentire.

Remember, ‘hear’ means to take in the noise with your ears, 

Ricorda, "ascoltare" significa assorbire il rumore con le orecchie,

so the correct answer for the second part is

quindi la risposta corretta per la seconda parte è "

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

non riesco a sentire esattamente quello che stanno dicendo".

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

Ora conosci la differenza tra "ascoltare" e "ascoltare". .
