HEAR vs LISTEN Difference, Meaning, Example Sentences | Learn English Vocabulary

confusing English words ‘hear’ and ‘listen’.

palabras en inglés similares y a veces confusas: "escuchar" y "escuchar".

These two words are commonly confused in English,

Estas dos palabras se confunden comúnmente en inglés,

but after watching this video you'll have  a good understanding of the difference and when to use these words.

pero después de ver este video comprenderás bien la diferencia y cuándo usarlas.

Let’s get started.

Empecemos.

Let’s start with ‘hear’. It is an irregular verb. 

Empecemos con "escuchar". Es un verbo irregular.

The past tense is ‘heard’.

El tiempo pasado se "escucha".

When you hear something, noise is coming into your ears.

Cuando escuchas algo, el ruido llega a tus oídos.

You are not focused on the noise.

No estás concentrado en el ruido.

When you are walking down the street,

Cuando caminas por la calle,

you may hear people talking, you may hear birds,

es posible que escuches a la gente hablar, que escuches los pájaros,

you may hear noise from the traffic,

que escuches el ruido del tráfico,

you hear all different noises.

que escuches todos los ruidos diferentes.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Veamos algunas oraciones de ejemplo.

The first sentence says,

La primera frase dice:

‘I hear someone knocking on my door.’

"Escucho que alguien llama a mi puerta".

So the sound of the knocking or the noise of the knocking is coming into your ears,

Entonces el sonido de los golpes o el ruido de los golpes llega a tus oídos,

so you can hear it.

para que puedas oírlo.

The next sentence says,

La siguiente frase dice:

‘He heard the thunder last night.’

"Anoche escuchó el trueno".

Thunder is very loud, so again you  will hear the noise of the thunder. 

Los truenos son muy fuertes, así que nuevamente oirás el ruido del trueno.

Now, I will talk about ‘listen’.

Ahora hablaré de "escuchar".

It is a regular verb

Es un verbo regular

and the past tense is ‘listened’.

y el tiempo pasado se 'escucha'.

It is usually followed by the preposition ‘to’.

Suele ir seguido de la preposición 'a'.

So you say ‘listen to’.

Entonces dices "escuchar".

When you are listening, you are trying to hear something.

Cuando estás escuchando, estás tratando de escuchar algo.

You are focused. And you really want to hear something clearly.

Estás concentrado. Y realmente quieres escuchar algo con claridad.

You pay attention to listen.

Prestas atención para escuchar.

Right now, you are listening to me.

Ahora mismo me estás escuchando.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

Veamos algunas oraciones de ejemplo.

The first sentence says,

La primera frase dice:

‘I always listen carefully to what my teacher says.’

"Siempre escucho atentamente lo que dice mi profesor".

In this example, ‘listen’ is just like focusing or paying attention to.

En este ejemplo, "escuchar" es como concentrarse o prestar atención.

The next sentence says,

La siguiente frase dice:

‘She usually listens to music before bed.’

"Por lo general, escucha música antes de acostarse".

This case also talks about focusing on the music with their ears.

Este caso también habla de centrarse en la música con los oídos.

Now, let's do a checkup.

Ahora, hagamos un chequeo.

We need to use ‘listen’ and ‘hear’

Necesitamos usar "escuchar" y "oír"

to  fill in the blanks in this sentence.

para completar los espacios en blanco en esta oración.

Take a moment to think about where to  use ‘listen’ and where to use ‘hear’. 

Tómate un momento para pensar dónde usar "escuchar" y dónde usar "escuchar".

The sentence says,

La frase dice:

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

"No entiendo su conversación".

Which one means to pay  attention to or to focus on? 

¿Cuál significa prestar atención o centrarse en?

That's ‘listen’.

Eso es "escuchar".

So we need to put ‘listen’ in the first blank.

Entonces necesitamos poner "escuchar" en el primer espacio en blanco.

‘I am _blank_ to their conversation.’

"No entiendo su conversación."

You'll notice it says ‘I am’

Notarás que dice "Yo soy",

so we need to use the present continuous tense ‘listening’.

por lo que debemos usar el tiempo presente continuo "escuchar".

‘I am listening to their conversation.’

"Estoy escuchando su conversación."

The second part of this sentence says,

La segunda parte de esta frase dice:

‘but I  can't _blank_ exactly what they are saying.’

"pero no puedo dejar en blanco exactamente lo que están diciendo".

Maybe it's noisy outside so it's hard to hear. 

Quizás afuera haya mucho ruido y sea difícil oír.

Remember, ‘hear’ means to take in the noise with your ears, 

Recuerde, "escuchar" significa captar el ruido con los oídos,

so the correct answer for the second part is

por lo que la respuesta correcta para la segunda parte es

‘I can't hear exactly what they are saying.’

"No puedo oír exactamente lo que dicen".

Now you know the difference  between ‘hear’ and ‘listen’. 

Ahora ya conoces la diferencia entre "oír" y "escuchar".
