LB: This is my first work, created in November 2005.

And this is Beijing International Art Camp where I worked

before the government forcibly demolished it.I used this work to express my objection.

I also want to use this work to let more people

pay attention to the living condition of artists and the condition of their creative freedom.

หันมาสนใจสภาพความเป็นอยู่ และ เสรีภาพ ในการสร้างสรรค์งานศิลปะของเหล่าศิลปิน

In the meantime, from the beginning, this series has a

ตั้งแต่นั้น ภาพชุดต่อเนื่องก็ได้เริ่มต้นขึ้น

protesting, reflective

มันมีจิตวิญญาณของการประท้วง

and uncompromising spirit.

สะท้อนมาว่าไม่ยอมอ่อนข้อให้

When applying makeup, I borrow a sniper's method

พอแต่งหน้า ผมก็จะยืมวิธีของมือปืนซุ่มยิงมาใช้

to better protect myself

พอทำแบบนี้แล้วเราจะพรางตัวเองได้ดีขึ้น

and to detect the enemy, as he did. (Laughter)

และคอยสังเกตการณ์ศัตรู เหมือนอย่างที่เขาทำได้ (เสียงหัวเราะ)

After finishing this series of protests,

พอภาพชุดการประท้วงเสร็จสิ้น

I started questioning why my fate was like this,

ผมก็เริ่มถามตัวเองว่า ทำไมชะตากรรมของผมถึงเป็นแบบนี้

and I realized that it's not just me --

และผมก็พบว่าไม่ได้มีแค่ผมคนเดียว

all Chinese are as confused as I am.

As you can see, these works

are about family planning, election in accordance with the law

ป้ายพูดถึง การวางแผนครอบครัว การเลือกตั้งตามกฎหมาย

and propaganda of the institution of the People's Congress.

กระทั่งโฆษณาชวนเชื่อเรื่องสถาบันของสภาประชาชน

This work is called Xia Gang ("leaving post").

ผลงานชิ้นนี้มีชื่อว่า "ลงทะเล" (ลงจากตำแหน่ง)

"Xia Gang" is a Chinese euphemism for "laid off".

"ลงทะเล" คือศัพท์ที่ใช้ในบริบทว่า ให้ออกจากงาน

It refers to those people who lost their jobs during China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy.

หมายถึงคนที่โดนออกจากงานในช่วงการเปลี่ยนแปลง ของจีน จากเศรษฐกิจที่มีแบบแผน มาเป็นเศรษฐกิจที่ขึ้นกับตลาด

From 1998 to 2000,

ระหว่าง ปี 1998 ถึง 2000

21.37 million people

ภายในสองปีนั้น มีคนจำนวนถึง

lost their jobs in China.

The six people in the photo

I made them invisible in the deserted shop wherethey had lived and worked all their lives.

On the wall behind them is the slogan of the Cultural Revolution:

"The core force leading our cause forward is the Chinese Communist Party."

For half a month

ผมใช้เวลาครึ่งเดือน

I looked for these 6 people to participate in my work.

เสาะหาคน 6 คนมาร่วมทำงานชิ้นนี้กับผม

We can only see six men in this picture,but in fact, those who are hidden here

เราเห็นแค่ว่ามีคน 6 คนในภาพ แต่ความจริง คือมีคนที่ถูกซ่อนไว้อีก

are all people who were laid off. They have just been made invisible.

เป็นกลุ่มคนที่ถูกให้ออกจากงานจริงๆ แต่ถูกทำให้มองไม่เห็น

This piece is called The Studio.

งานชิ้นนี้ ชื่อว่า "ช่วงถ่ายทอดสด"

This spring,

ฤดูใบไม้ผลิปีนี้

I happened to have an opportunity during my solo exhibition in Paris

ผมสบโอกาสดีขณะไปจัดแสดงนิทรรศการของตัวเองที่ปารีส

to shoot a work in the news studio of France 3 --

ได้ไปถ่ายทำงานชิ้นหนึ่งในรายการข่าวถ่ายทอดสด ที่สถานีโทรทัศน์ช่อง 3 ของฝรั่งเศส

I picked the news photos of the day.

ผมได้เลือกภาพข่าวที่เกิดขึ้นในวันนั้นมา

One is about the war in the Middle East,

ภาพหนึ่งเป็นภาพสงครามในตะวันออกกลาง

and another one is about a public demonstration in France.

อีกภาพเป็นการชุมนุมเดินขบวนของประชาชนในฝรั่งเศส

I found that any culture has its irreconcilable contradictions.

ผมพบว่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวัฒนธรรมใด ต่างก็มีความขัดแย้งที่แก้ไขให้ดีขึ้นไม่ได้

This is a joint effort between me and French artist JR.

งานชิ้นนี้เป็นความร่วมมือ ระหว่างผมกับศิลปินชาวฝรั่งเศสนาม เจอาร์ (JR)

LB: I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

หลิว: ผมพยายามจะทำให้ JR หายเข้าไปในดวงตาของผม

but the problem is JR only uses models with big eyes.

แต่ปกติผลงานของ เจอาร์ แต่ละชิ้น เขาใช้นาย-นางแบบที่มีดวงตากลมโตมาก

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with my fingers.

ผมเลยใช้นิ้วของผม ถ่างตาให้โตขึ้น

But still they are not big enough for JR, unfortunately.

แต่เสียดาย เจอารย์ยังว่า ตาผมเล็กเกินไป

Interpreter: So I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

ล่าม: ผมพยายามจะหายเข้าไปในดวงตาของ เจอาร์

but the problem is JR uses only models with big eyes.

แต่ปัญหาอยู่ที่ เจอาร์ ใช้เฉพาะนาย-นางแบบ ที่มีดวงตากลมโตเท่านั้น

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with this gesture.

ผมเลยพยายามเบิกตาให้โตขึ้นอีก​ โดยทำท่าแบบนี้

But it doesn't work, my eyes are still small.

แต่ไม่สำเร็จ เจอาร์ ยังคงคิดว่าตาของผมโตไม่พอ

When I work on a new piece, I pay more attention to the expression of ideas.

ทุกครั้งที่ผมเริ่มจับงานชิ้นใหม่ ผมเน้นมากเรื่องการแสดงออกทางความคิด

For instance, why would I make myself invisible?

เช่น ผมจะทำตัวให้ล่องหนได้ไปทำไม

What will making myself invisible here cause people to think?

การที่ผมล่องหนอยู่ตรงนี้ จะมีผลให้ผู้คนขบคิดอะไรได้บ้าง

This one is called Instant Noodles.

งานชิ้นนี้ ชื่อ "บะหมี่สำเร็จรูป"

Interpreter: This one is called Instant Noodles. (Laughter)

harmful phosphors have been found

สารฟอสฟอร์ (phosphors) ที่เป็นอันตรายถูกพบ ในบะหมี่สำเร็จรูปชนิดถ้วย

in the instant noodle package cups from every famous brand sold in China's supermarkets.

ทุกยี่ห้อดังที่มีวางขายในซูเปอร์มาร์เก็ตของจีน

These phosphors can even cause cancer.

สารฟอสฟอร์เหล่านี้ก่อมะเร็งได้

To create this artwork,

เพื่อให้ผมสร้างงานนี้ได้

I bought a lot of packaged instant noodle cups

ผมซื้อบะหมี่สำเร็จรูปชนิดถ้วยจำนวนมาก

and put them in my studio, making it look like a supermarket.

มากองไว้ที่สตูดิโอ ทำให้เหมือนเป็นซุปเปอร์มาร์เก็ต

And my task is to stand there, trying to be still,

งานของผม คือ ไปยึนตรงนั้น นิ่งๆไม่ขยับ

setting up the camera position and coordinating with my assistant

and drawing the colors and shapes that are behind my body

on the front of my body. If the background is simple,

I usually have to stand for three to four hours.

this is about food safety in China.

Unsafe food can harm people's health,

อาหารที่ไม่ปลอดภัยจะเป็นอันตรายต่อร่างกายคนเราได้

and a deluge of magazines can confuse people's minds. (Laughter)

และวารสารหลากหลายประเภท ทำให้จิตใจผู้คนสับสน (เสียงหัวเราะ)

The next pieces of work show how I made myself invisible in magazines of different languages,

งานชิ้นถัดๆไป ผมได้หายตัว เข้าไปอยู่ในวารสารต่างประเทศหลากภาษา

in different countries and at different times.

ในประเทศต่างๆ และในเวลาที่แตกต่างกัน

I think that in art, an artist's attitude is the most important element.

ผมเห็นว่าทัศนคติของศิลปินต่องานศิลปะ เป็นเรื่องที่สำคัญที่สุด

If an artwork is to touch someone,

หากการสร้างงานศิลปะคือการทำให้ผู้คนประทับใจ

it must be the result of not only technique, but also the artist's thinking and struggle in life.

นั่นต้องไม่ใช่แค่การมีเทคนิคดี แต่ต้องเกิดจากการครุ่นคิด บวกกับ

And the repeated struggles in life create artwork,

การต่อสู้ดิ้นรนหลายๆ ครั้งในชีวิตของตัวศิลปินเอง จึงจะกลายเป็นผลงานศิลปะได้

no matter in what form.

ไม่ว่าจะออกมาในรูปแบบใดก็ตาม
