And this is Beijing International Art Camp where I worked

before the government forcibly demolished it.I used this work to express my objection.

정부에서 강제로 철거하기 전 모습니다. 저는 이 작품을 제 반대 의사를 표현하는데 사용했습니다.

I also want to use this work to let more people

다른 이유는 보다 많은 사람들이 예술가의 생활 환경과

pay attention to the living condition of artists and the condition of their creative freedom.

창조적 자유의 현실에 관심을 가졌으면 해서입니다.

In the meantime, from the beginning, this series has a

protesting, reflective

and uncompromising spirit.

When applying makeup, I borrow a sniper's method

to better protect myself

and to detect the enemy, as he did. (Laughter)

After finishing this series of protests,

일련의 시위 활동을 끝내고

I started questioning why my fate was like this,

내 운명은 왜 이럴까 의문이 들기 시작했습니다.

and I realized that it's not just me --

그리고 깨달았지요. 저뿐 아니라

all Chinese are as confused as I am.

모든 중국인들이 저만큼 혼란스러워하고 있다는 걸.

As you can see, these works

are about family planning, election in accordance with the law

가족 계획과 합법적인 선거,

and propaganda of the institution of the People's Congress.

인민대표 대회의에서 하는 선전에 관한 내용입니다.

This work is called Xia Gang ("leaving post").

이 작품은 Xia Gang("퇴근") 입니다.

"Xia Gang" is a Chinese euphemism for "laid off".

중국어로 "퇴근"(Xia Gang)이란 "실직"을 돌려 말한 표현입니다.

It refers to those people who lost their jobs during China's transition from a planned economy to a market economy.

중국이 계획 경제에서 시장 경제로 옮겨가는 과정에서 일자리를 잃은 사람들을 가리킵니다.

From 1998 to 2000,

1998년에서 2000년 사이에

21.37 million people

2,137만명의 중국인이

lost their jobs in China.

일자리를 잃었습니다.

The six people in the photo

사진에 보이는 6명은

are Xia Gang workers.

Xia Gang 노동자들입니다.

I made them invisible in the deserted shop wherethey had lived and worked all their lives.

평생 일했던 삶의 터전이었으나 제가 텅 빈 공장에서 투명하게 묘사했습니다.

On the wall behind them is the slogan of the Cultural Revolution:

벽에는 문화 혁명 슬로건이 걸려있습니다.

"The core force leading our cause forward is the Chinese Communist Party."

"중국 공산당은 우리 대의를 이끄는 원동력이다"

For half a month

2주 동안

I looked for these 6 people to participate in my work.

작품에 참여할 이 여섯 분들을 찾아다녔습니다.

We can only see six men in this picture,but in fact, those who are hidden here

사진에는 6명밖에 없지만, 이 뒤에는

are all people who were laid off. They have just been made invisible.

실직당한 모든 이들이 숨겨져 있습니다. 보이지 않게 감춰졌을 뿐이죠.

This piece is called The Studio.

이 작품은 "스튜디오" 라고 합니다.

This spring,

I happened to have an opportunity during my solo exhibition in Paris

파리에서 개인전을 열 기회가 있었어요.

to shoot a work in the news studio of France 3 --

"프랑스 3" 채널의 뉴스 스튜디오에서 촬영했죠.

I picked the news photos of the day.

그날의 뉴스 사진을 골랐습니다

One is about the war in the Middle East,

하나는 중동의 전쟁,

and another one is about a public demonstration in France.

다른 하나는 프랑스의 시위 운동 사진이었습니다.

I found that any culture has its irreconcilable contradictions.

어느 문화나 해소하기 어려운 모순이 존재한다는 걸 알게 되었습니다.

This is a joint effort between me and French artist JR.

이건 프랑스 작가 JR과의 공동 작업입니다.

LB: I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

류: 저는 JR의 눈에 녹아들려고 했지만

but the problem is JR only uses models with big eyes.

JR은 눈 큰 모델만 쓴다는 게 문제였습니다.

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with my fingers.

그래서 손으로 눈을 좀 크게 만들어 봤지만

But still they are not big enough for JR, unfortunately.

안타깝게도 JR 기준에는 미치지 못했습니다.

Interpreter: So I tried to disappear into JR's eye,

but the problem is JR uses only models with big eyes.

JR은 눈 큰 모델만 쓴다는 게 문제였습니다.

So I tried to make my eyes bigger with this gesture.

그래서 손으로 눈을 좀 크게 만들어 봤지만

But it doesn't work, my eyes are still small.

안타깝게도 JR 기준에는 미치지 못했습니다. (웃음)

Because global temperatures rise,

When I work on a new piece, I pay more attention to the expression of ideas.

새로운 작품을 할 때면 생각의 표현에 주의를 기울입니다.

For instance, why would I make myself invisible?

예를 들면, 나는 왜 투명해지고 싶을까?

What will making myself invisible here cause people to think?

내가 여기에서 투명해짐으로써 사람들은 어떤 생각을 하게 될까?

This one is called Instant Noodles.

harmful phosphors have been found

중국 슈퍼마켓에서 파는 모든 유명 제품 컵라면 용기에서

in the instant noodle package cups from every famous brand sold in China's supermarkets.

몸에 해로운 형광 물질이 발견됐습니다.

These phosphors can even cause cancer.

암을 유발할 수도 있는 물질입니다.

To create this artwork,

이 작품을 하기 위해

I bought a lot of packaged instant noodle cups

컵라면을 대량으로 사서

and put them in my studio, making it look like a supermarket.

스튜디오에 진열했습니다. 슈퍼마켓처럼 보이게요.

And my task is to stand there, trying to be still,

제게 주어진 과제는 최대한 가만히 서서

setting up the camera position and coordinating with my assistant

and drawing the colors and shapes that are behind my body

on the front of my body. If the background is simple,

I usually have to stand for three to four hours.

Unsafe food can harm people's health,

and a deluge of magazines can confuse people's minds. (Laughter)

잡지의 홍수는 정신을 흐릴 수 있지요. (웃음)

The next pieces of work show how I made myself invisible in magazines of different languages,

in different countries and at different times.

여러 나라의 다양한 언어로 된 잡지에서 투명해진 모습입니다.

I think that in art, an artist's attitude is the most important element.

예술에 있어 가장 중요한 요소는 예술가의 자세라 생각합니다.

If an artwork is to touch someone,

예술 작품이 감동을 주려면

it must be the result of not only technique, but also the artist's thinking and struggle in life.

기법뿐 아니라 작가의 사고와 힘든 경험들이 합해져야 합니다.

And the repeated struggles in life create artwork,

반복되는 삶의 투쟁은 어떤 형태로든지

no matter in what form.

예술 작품을 만들어냅니다.
