PA: I want to ask you guys a question. How many languages do you speak?

PA:ကိုယ့်လူတွေကို မေးခွန်းတစ်ခုမေးချင်တယ်။ ဘာသာစကား ဘယ်နှစ်ခု ပြောကြလဲ။

This is not a rhetorical question.

ဒါအဖြေမတောင်းတဲ့ မေးခွန်းမဟုတ်ဘူး။

I actually want you to think of a number.

ကိန်းတစ်ခုကို တကယ် စဉ်းစားစေချင်တာပါ။

For some of you, it's pretty easy.

တချို့တွေအတွက် အတော်လေး လွယ်ပါတယ်။

Inside your head, you're like, "It's one. You're speaking it, buddy. I'm done."

Others of you maybe are wondering

where you learned all the cusswords,

သင်ယူခဲ့တာက ကျိန်ဆဲတဲ့စကားလုံးတွေပါ။

if it counts -- go ahead and count it.

When I asked myself the question, I came up with four,

ကျွန်တော့ကိုယ် ကျွန်တော် မေးကြည့်တော လေးခု ရတယ်။

arguably five, if I've been drinking.

သောက်နေတာဆိုရင် ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ် ငါးခုဗျ။

But on closer examination, I came up with 83 -- 83 languages,

ဒါပေမဲ့ စာမေးပွဲ နီးလာတဲ့အခါ ၈၃ ခု ၊ ဘာသာစကား ၈၃ ခု ရလာတယ်။

and I got tired and I stopped counting.

ကျွန်တော် ပင်ပန်းသွားပြီး ဆက်မရေတော့ဘူး။

And it forced me to revisit this definition that we have of language.

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်တို့ရှိတဲ့ ဘာသာစကားရဲ့ ဒီအဓိပ္ပာယ်ကို အတင်း ပြန်တွေးခိုင်းတယ်။

The first entry said,

ပထမဆုံး ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်က

"The method of human communication, either spoken or written,

"လူသား ဆက်သွယ်ရေး နည်းလမ်း အပြော (သို့) အရေးတစ်ခုခု

consisting of the use of words in a structured or conventional way."

ဖွဲ့စည်းထားတဲ့(သို့) အဆင်ပြေတဲ့ နည်းတစ်ခု ထဲကစကားလုံးတွေအသုံးပြုမှု ပါခြင်း"

The definition at the bottom refers to specialized fields,

အောက်က အဓိပ္ပာယ်ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်က ဆေးပညာ၊ သိပ္ပံ၊ နည်းပညာလို

like medicine, science, tech.

အထူးပြု နယ်ပယ်တွေကို ရည်ညွှန်းတယ်။

We know they have their own vernacular,

ဒါတွေမှာ ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဒေသဝေါဟာရ၊

their own jargon.

စကားနွမ်းတွေရှိတယ်

But what most interested me was that definition right in the center there:

ဒါပေမဲ့ စိတ်အဝင်စားဆုံးက ဟောဒီ အလယ်တည့်တည့်က အဓိပ္ပာယ်ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်ပါ။

"the system of communication used by a particular community or country."

"လူမှုအဖွဲ့ (သို့) နိုင်ငံတစ်ခုခုက အသုံးပြတဲ့ ဆက်သွယ်ရေးစနစ်"

And I'm not interested in altering this definition.

ဒီအဓိပ္ပာယ်ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်ကို ပြောင်းဖို့ ကျွန်တော် စိတ်မဝင်စားဘူး။

I'm interested in applying it to everything we do,

ကျွန်တော်တို့ လုပ်တာတိုင်းအတွက် ဒါကို အသုံးချရတာကို စိတ်ဝင်စားတယ်။

because I believe that we speak far more languages than we realize.

And for the rest of our time together,

I'm going to attempt to speak in one language

that is native to every single human being in this room.

But that changes things a little bit,

because then it's no longer a presentation.

It becomes a conversation,

and in any conversation,

there must be some sort of interaction.

And for any interaction to happen,

there has to be a degree of willingness on both parties.

And I think if we just are willing, we will see the magic that can happen

Now, if that felt a little bit awkward,

And I know that wasn't nice, and I'm sorry,

but in that moment,

some of us felt something.

ကျွန်တော်တို့တချို့ တစ်ခုခုခံစားရတယ်။

You see, we're often aware of what language does

လူတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားကို ပြောကြတဲ့အခါ မကြာခဏ

when we speak somebody's language,

ဘာသာစကားက လုပ်တာကို သတိပြုမိတယ်။

what it does to connect, what it does to bind.

ဒါက ဆက်သွယ်ပေးတာ၊ ဒါက ချည်နှောင်ပေးတာပါ။

But we often forget what it does when you can't speak that language,

what it does to isolate, what it does to exclude.

And I want us to hold on as we journey through

our little walk of languages here.

(In Farsi: I'd like to translate the idea of "taarof.")

( ဖာရ်စီ ဘာသာဖြင့်။ "taarof" ဆိုတဲ့ စိတ်ကူးကို ဘာသာပြန်ချင်တယ်)

I said in Farsi, "I'd like to translate

ဖာရ်စီလို ပြောခဲ့တာက "ပါးရှန်း

this idea of 'taarof' in the Persian culture,"

ယဉ်ကျေးမှုထဲက 'taarof' စိတ်ကူးကို ဘာသာပြန်ချင်တယ်။"

which, really -- it has no equivalent in the English lexicon.

ဒါက တကယ်တော့ အင်္ဂလိပ် ဝေါဟာရ စာရင်းမှာ တူတာမရှိဘူး။

The best definition would be something like an extreme grace

အကောင်းဆုံး အနက်ဖွင့်ဆိုမှုက အင်မတန် တင့်တယ်မှု၊ အင်မတန်

or an extreme humility.

စာနာမှုလို တစ်ခုခုဖြစ်မယ်။

But that doesn't quite get the job done.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သိပ်မှန်တဲ့ ပြန်ဆိုချက်မဟုတ်ဘူး

So I'll give you an example.

ဒီတော့ နမူနာတစ်ခု ပေးပါမယ်။

If two gentlemen were walking by each other,

လူကြီးနှစ်ယောက် ဖြတ်လျှောက်သွားခိုက်မှာ

it'd be very common for the first one to say,

ပထမဆုံးတစ်ခုအတွက် ပြောဆိုဖို့ အဖြစ်များတာက

(In Farsi: I am indebted to you),

(ဖာရ်စီစကား၊၊ ကျေးဇူးရှိတယ်)

which means, "I am indebted to you."

"ခင်ဗျား ကျေးဇူးရှိတယ်" ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

The other gentlemen would respond back,

နောက်လူကြီးလူကောင်းက ပြန်ပြောမှာက

(In Farsi: I open my shirt for you)

(ဖာရ်စီစကား။အင်္ကျီကို ဖွင့်ထားတယ်။)

which means, "I open my shirt for you."

"ခင်ဗျားအတွက် ကျုပ်အကျင်္ီကို ဖွင့်ထားတယ်"။

The first guy would respond back,

ပထမလူ ပြန်ပြောမှာက

(ဖာရ်စီဘာသာဖြင့်။ ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ အစေအပါးပါ။

(In Farsi: I am your servant)

which means, "I am your servant."

ဆိုလိုတာက "ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ အစေအပါးပါ"။

And then the second guy would respond back to him,

ဒီနောက် ဒုတိယလူက သူ့ကို ပြန်ပြော မှာက

(In Farsi: I am the dirt beneath your feet)

(ဖာရ်စီစကား။ ကျွန်တော်က ဖဝါးအောက်က ဖုန်။)

which literally means, "I am the dirt beneath your feet."

တိုက်ရိုက်ကတော့ "ဖဝါးအောက်က ဖုန်မှုန့်" လို့ဆိုလိုပါတယ်။

Here's an exhibit for you guys, in case you didn't get the picture.

ဒါက ကိုယ့်လူတွေအတွက် တကယ်လို့ နားမလည်ဘူးဆိုရင်အထောက်အထားတစ်ခုပါ။

And I share that with you, because

ဒါကို ခင်ဗျားတို့နဲ့ မျှဝေတာက

with new languages come new concepts that didn't exist before.

ဘာသာစကား အသစ်တွေကအရင်က မရှိခဲ့တဲ့ အယူအဆအသစ်တွေနဲ့ လာလို့ပါ။

And the other thing is,

နောက်ပြီး အခြားအရာက

sometimes we think language is about understanding the meaning of a word,

တစ်ခါတစ်လေမှာ ဘာသာစကားဟာ စကားတစ်လုံးရဲ့ အနက်ကို နားလည်တာလို့ တင်ကြပေမဲ့

but I believe language is about making a word meaningful for yourself.

ဘာသာစကားဟာ စကားတစ်လုံးကို ကိုယ်တိုင်အတွက် အဓိပ္ပာယ်ရှိအောင် လုပ်တာလို့ ယုံကြည်တယ်။

If I were to flash this series of words on the screen,

စခရင်ပေါ်က ဒီစကားလုံး အစဉ်အတန်းကို ထိုးပြလိုက်မယ်ဆိုရင်

some of you, you'd know exactly what it is right away.

တချို​့တွေတော့ ဘာလဲဆိုတာ အတိအကျ ချက်ချင်း သိကြလိမ့်မယ်။

Others of you, you might struggle a little bit.

အခြားသူတွေကတော့ နည်းနည်း အားထုတ်ရလောက်တယ်။

And I could probably draw a pretty clear-cut line

အသက် ၃၅ နှစ်ဝန်းကျင်နဲ့ ပိုကြီးတဲ့သူ၊ ပိုငယ်တဲ့လူ

right around the age of 35 and older, 35 and younger.

And for those of us that are in the know,

သိကြတဲ့ သူတွေအတွက်အတော့

we know that's text-speak, or SMS language.

ဒါဟာ စာသား စကားပြော(သို့) SMS ဘာသာစကားဆို သိပါတယ်။

It's a series of characters meant to convey the most amount of meaning

ဒါက အက္ခရာအနည်းဆုံးနဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ် အများဆုံး ပမာဏကိုပေးတဲ့​

with the least amount of characters,

အက္ခရာတန်းတစ်ခုပါ။

which sounds pretty similar to our definition of languages:

ဒါက ဘာသာစကားတွေရဲ့ အဓိပ္ပာယ် ဖွင့်ဆိုချက်ကနဲ့ အတော်တူတယ်။

"system of communication used by a community."

"လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်းတစ်ခုက သုံးတဲ့ ဆက်သွယ်ရေးစနစ်"

Now, anyone who's ever got into an argument via text

ကဲ စာသားကနေ ဆွေးနွေးငြင်းခုံ ဖူးသူတိုင်း ဒါဟာ ဆက်သွယ်ရေးရဲ့

can make a case for how it's maybe not the best method of communication,

အကောင်းဆုံးနည်း မဖြစ်နိုင်ပုံကို ပြဿနာလုပ်နိုင်ပေမဲ့

but what if I told you that what you saw earlier

ခုနက မြင်ခဲ့ရတာက ခေတ်ပေါ် ရည်းစားစာတစ်စောင်လို့

was a modern-day love letter?

ကျွန်တော် ပြောမယ်ရင်ရော။

If you follow along:

Kind of a modern-day Romeo or Juliet.

In that moment, if you laughed,

အဲဒီအခိုက်မှာ သင် ရယ်လိုက်ရင်

you spoke another language that needs no explanation: laughter.

ရှင်းပြစရာမလိုတဲ့ ဘာသာစကားတစ်ခုကို သင်ပြောလိုက်တာပါ။ ရယ်သံပါ။

It's one of the most common languages in the world.

ကမ္ဘာမှာ အသိအများဆုံး ဘာသာစကားတွေထဲ့က တစ်ခုပါ။

We don't have to explain it to each other, it's just something we all feel,

and that's why things like laughter and things like music are so prevalent,

because they seem to somehow transcend explanation

Every language we learn is a portal

by which we can access another language.

The more you know, the more you can speak.

And it's something common that we all do.

We take any new concept, and we filter it through

an already existing access of reality within us.

And that's why languages are so important,

because they give us access to new worlds,

not just people.

It's not just about seeing or hearing, it's about feeling, experiencing, sharing.

And despite these languages that we've covered,

I really don't think we've covered

အလေးနက်ဆုံး ဘာသာစကားတစ်ခုကိုတော့

one of the most profound languages,

ဖုံးဖိမထားဘူးလို့တော့ ထင်တယ်။

and that's the language of experience.

ဒါကတော့ အတွေ့အကြုံရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားပါ။

That's why when you're talking with someone,

if they've shared something you've shared, you don't need to explain it much.

Or that's why, when you're sharing a story and you finish,

the first thing we all say is,

"Guess you had to be there."

I guess you had to be here this week to know what this is about.

It's kind of hard to explain, isn't it?

And for the sake of our research, I'm going to close by asking

that you participate one more time in this language of experience.

Do you speak this language?

When I was growing up in primary school,

ကျွန်တော်က မူလတန်းကျောင်းမှာ ကြီးပြင်းလာတော့

at the end of the year, we would have these parties,

နှစ်အဆုံးမှာ ပါတီပွဲတွေ ကျင်းပခဲ့ပြီး

and we'd vote on whether we wanted to celebrate at an amusement park

အပန်းဖြေဥယျာဉ်မှာ (သို့) ရေလွှာ ဥယျာဉ်မှာကျင်းပချင်လားဆိုတာ

or a water park.

မဲပေးကြတယ်။

And I would really hope the party wasn't at a water park,

ပါတီပွဲကို ရေလွှာဥယျာဉ်မှာ မဖြစ်ပါစေနဲ့လို့မျှော်လင့်တယ်

because then I'd have to be in a bathing suit.

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I approach a dressing room,

When I would go to family functions or family gatherings,

every time I wanted a second plate --

အကြိမ်တိုင်း ဒုတိယပန်းကန်ကိုယူတယ်။

and I usually did --

it was a whole exercise in cost-benefit analysis,

Did my cheeks have a big "Pinch me" sign that I didn't see?

ကျွန်တော့ပါးတွေမှာ ကျွန်တော် မမြင်တဲ့ "ငါ့ကို ထိုးပါ"ဆိုတဲ့ အမှတ်အသားရှိလို့လား။

And if you're squirming or you're laughing or you stood up,

သင်ဟာ ရှက်ကိုးရှက်ကန်း(သို့) ရယ်နေတာ (သို့) မတ်တတ်ရပ်တာ (သို့)

or you're beginning to stand,

စပြီး မတ်တတ်ရပ်နေတယ်ဆိုရင်

you're speaking the language that I endearingly call

"ခပ်ဝဝ ကလေးတစ်ယောက် ကြီးပြင်း လာတာရဲ့ ဘာသာစကား"လို့

"the language of growing up a fat kid."

And any body-image issue is a dialect of that language.

Imagine two bills in my hand.

One is the phone bill,

and one is the electric bill.

which means, "I might not have enough to pay both at the current moment."

You've got to be resourceful. You've got to figure it out.

And if you're standing, you know the language of barely making ends meet,

you understand that there is no motivator of greatness like deficiency.

Not having resources, not having looks, not having finances

can often be the barren soil

The second you recognize it, feel free to stand.

When we heard the diagnosis,

And a series of answers determines a person's life.

အဖြေတွေတစ်သီးကြီးက လူတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ဘဝကို သတ်မှတ်တယ်။

And when my dad was hungry, we'd all rush to the dinner table to eat,

အဖေ ဗိုက်ဆာတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံး ညစာစားပွဲဆီစားဖို့ အပြေးသွားတယ်။

because that's what we did before.

ဒါက အရင်က လုပ်ခဲ့တာမို့ပါ။

We ate together, so we were going to continue doing that.

And I didn't understand why we were losing this battle,

because I was taught if you fight and if you have the right spirit,

you're supposed to win.

And we weren't winning.

For any of you that stood up,

And for anybody that stood up,

you speak the language that I like to call "the language of disconnection."

It's been called the language of connection,

human disconnection,

disconnected from each other,

from where we are, from our own thoughts,

so we can occupy another space.

If you're not standing,

you probably know what it's like to feel left out.

Most the shadows in the dark have forgotten about it.

is the one we have the toughest time speaking or expressing?

No matter how many books, how many seminars,

စာအုပ် ဘယ်နှစ်အုပ်၊ ဆွေးနွေးပွဲ ဘယ်နှစ်ခု၊

how many life-coaching sessions we go to,

ဘဝ ပညာပေးသင်တန်းတွေ ဘယ်လောက် တက်တက်

we just can't get enough of it.

And I ask you now:

Is that number that you had at the beginning, has that changed?

What languages do we share?

And if you don't come up with anything,

ခင်ဗျား တစ်ခုမှ ရမလာသေးဘူးဆိုရင်

ask yourself: What languages could we share?

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကိုယ် မေးပါ၊ ဘယ် ဘာသာစကား မျှဝေနိုင်လဲ။

And if you still don't come up with anything,

ခင်ဗျား တစ်ခုမှ ရမလာသေးဘူးဆိုရင်

ask yourself: What languages can I learn?

And now matter how inconsequential
