PA: I want to ask you guys a question. How many languages do you speak?

질문 하나 드리겠습니다. 몇 개 국어를 할 줄 아시나요?

This is not a rhetorical question.

수사적 질문이 아닙니다.

I actually want you to think of a number.

실제로 몇 개인지 생각해보세요.

For some of you, it's pretty easy.

몇몇 분에게는 매우 쉬울 겁니다.

Inside your head, you're like, "It's one. You're speaking it, buddy. I'm done."

"당신이 지금 말하는 언어 그거 하나뿐인데."라고 생각하실지도요.

Others of you maybe are wondering

몇몇 분은 고민하고 있을 겁니다.

if the language an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend taught you,

전 여자친구나 전 남자친구한테서 온갖 욕을 다 배운 언어인데

where you learned all the cusswords,

쳐도 되나 고민 중이시라면

if it counts -- go ahead and count it.

그것도 치셔도 됩니다.

When I asked myself the question, I came up with four,

저 자신에게 질문했을 때는 네 개라고 대답했어요.

arguably five, if I've been drinking.

술을 마시면 다섯 개가 되고요.

(Laughter)

(In Italian: With a little bit of wine I can speak Italian.)

이탈리아어: 와인 한잔이면 이탈리아어도 할 줄 알죠.

But on closer examination, I came up with 83 -- 83 languages,

하지만 더 곰곰히 생각해보니 83개나 되더라고요.

and I got tired and I stopped counting.

그러다 지쳐서 세는 것을 그만뒀지요.

And it forced me to revisit this definition that we have of language.

그리고 우리가 생각하는 언어라는 정의를 다시 찾아보게 됐습니다.

The first entry said,

처음 부분을 보시면

"The method of human communication, either spoken or written,

"말하거나 쓰는 인간의 소통하는 방법.

consisting of the use of words in a structured or conventional way."

체계적이거나 관습적으로 단어를 사용하는 것으로 구성된다."

The definition at the bottom refers to specialized fields,

아래에 있는 뜻은 전문화된 분야에 관한 것인데요.

like medicine, science, tech.

의학, 과학, 기술 같은 분야요.

We know they have their own vernacular,

그 분야 사람들만의 언어나 전문 용어가 존재하잖아요.

their own jargon.

But what most interested me was that definition right in the center there:

하지만 이 중에 가장 흥미로웠던 것은 가운데에 있는 설명이었는데요.

"the system of communication used by a particular community or country."

"특정 공동체나 국가가 사용하는 통신 체계."

And I'm not interested in altering this definition.

이 사전적 의미를 바꿀 생각은 없습니다.

I'm interested in applying it to everything we do,

저는 이것을 저희가 하는 모든 일에 적용해보고싶어요.

because I believe that we speak far more languages than we realize.

제 생각에 우리는 생각한 것보다 많은 언어를 할 수 있다고 믿기 때문이죠.

And for the rest of our time together,

우리에게 남은 시간 동안

I'm going to attempt to speak in one language

저는 하나의 언어로 얘기를 할 건데

that is native to every single human being in this room.

But that changes things a little bit,

because then it's no longer a presentation.

왜냐하면 더는 강연이 아니게 되어버리기 때문이죠.

It becomes a conversation,

and in any conversation,

그리고 모든 의사소통에는 반드시 어떤 형태의 상호작용이 있어야 합니다.

there must be some sort of interaction.

And for any interaction to happen,

이 상호작용이 있으려면

there has to be a degree of willingness on both parties.

양측 모두 어느 정도의 의지가 있어야 합니다.

And I think if we just are willing, we will see the magic that can happen

그리고 단순한 의지로써 우리는 앞으로 벌어지는 마법 같은 일을

with just a little bit of willingness.

목격하게 될 것입니다.

So I've chosen a relatively low-risk common denominator

그래서 저는 모두가 의향이 있다면 어느 정도 가늠할 수 있는

that can kind of gauge if we're all willing.

상대적으로 위험이 낮은 흔한 공통점을 찾아서 선택했습니다.

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.

Now, if that felt a little bit awkward,

I simply asked the Spanish-speaking audience to stand up,

look at a person that was sitting close to them and laugh.

And I know that wasn't nice, and I'm sorry,

but in that moment,

some of us felt something.

You see, we're often aware of what language does

when we speak somebody's language,

what it does to connect, what it does to bind.

연결을 하기 위해 무엇을 하고 결속하기 위해 무엇을 하는지 말입니다.

But we often forget what it does when you can't speak that language,

하지만 다른 언어를 말하지 못할 때에는 그걸 잊곤 합니다.

what it does to isolate, what it does to exclude.

고립시키기 위해 무엇을 하는지 제외하기 위해 무엇을 하는지 말이죠.

And I want us to hold on as we journey through

이제 언어의 여정을 떠나게 될텐데

our little walk of languages here.

(In Farsi: I'd like to translate the idea of "taarof.")

페르시아어: '타루프'의 개념을 통역해보려고 합니다.

I said in Farsi, "I'd like to translate

방금 페르시아어로 "페르시아 문화에서의

this idea of 'taarof' in the Persian culture,"

타루프의 개념을 통역해보려고 합니다."라고 했습니다.

which, really -- it has no equivalent in the English lexicon.

영어에는 이 개념을 나타낼 수 있는 단어가 없습니다.

The best definition would be something like an extreme grace

굳이 번역하자면 극단적인 예의나

or an extreme humility.

극단적인 겸손이라고 생각하시면 됩니다.

하지만 이해시키기에는 충분치 않죠.

But that doesn't quite get the job done.

So I'll give you an example.

그래서 예를 들어보죠.

If two gentlemen were walking by each other,

두 신사가 걷다가 서로 지나치게 되면

it'd be very common for the first one to say,

한 쪽이 보통 이렇게 얘기하곤 합니다.

(In Farsi: I am indebted to you),

페르시아어: 제가 당신께 신세를 졌습니다.

which means, "I am indebted to you."

"당신께 신세를 졌습니다." 라는 뜻입니다.

The other gentlemen would respond back,

그러면 다른 신사가 이렇게 대답할 겁니다.

(In Farsi: I open my shirt for you)

페르시아어 : 당신을 위해 내 셔츠를 열겠습니다.

which means, "I open my shirt for you."

"당신을 위해 내 셔츠를 열겠습니다."라는 뜻입니다.

The first guy would respond back,

첫 번째 신사가 답변합니다.

(In Farsi: I am your servant)

페르시아어: 전 당신의 시종입니다.

which means, "I am your servant."

"전 당신의 시종입니다." 라는 뜻입니다.

And then the second guy would respond back to him,

그리고서 두 번째 신사가 답변합니다.

(In Farsi: I am the dirt beneath your feet)

페르시아어: 전 당신 발 아래의 흙입니다.

"전 당신의 발아래의 흙입니다." 라는 뜻입니다.

which literally means, "I am the dirt beneath your feet."

Here's an exhibit for you guys, in case you didn't get the picture.

And I share that with you, because

with new languages come new concepts that didn't exist before.

새로운 언어에는 이전에 존재하지 않은 새로운 개념이 따라오기 때문입니다.

And the other thing is,

또 다른 한 가지는

sometimes we think language is about understanding the meaning of a word,

우리가 종종 언어란 단어의 뜻을 이해하는 것이라고 생각하지만

but I believe language is about making a word meaningful for yourself.

저는 언어란 어떤 단어를 스스로에게 의미있게 만드는 것이라고 생각합니다.

If I were to flash this series of words on the screen,

some of you, you'd know exactly what it is right away.

Others of you, you might struggle a little bit.

And I could probably draw a pretty clear-cut line

And for those of us that are in the know,

we know that's text-speak, or SMS language.

It's a series of characters meant to convey the most amount of meaning

with the least amount of characters,

which sounds pretty similar to our definition of languages:

아까 살펴본 언어의 정의가 떠오르죠.

"공동체에서 사용되는 언어의 체계."

"system of communication used by a community."

Now, anyone who's ever got into an argument via text

문자 상으로 싸워본 적이 있으시다면

can make a case for how it's maybe not the best method of communication,

이게 의사소통하는데 가장 좋은 방법은 아니라고 말할 수 있을 거예요.

but what if I told you that what you saw earlier

여러분이 방금 보신게

was a modern-day love letter?

현대판 러브레터라면 믿으시겠어요?

If you follow along:

because you positively bring out all the best in me,

Kind of a modern-day Romeo or Juliet.

현대판 로미오와 줄리엣 같지 않나요?

In that moment, if you laughed,

그 순간에 웃으셨다면

you spoke another language that needs no explanation: laughter.

다른 설명이 필요 없는 다른 언어로 말한 거나 다름없습니다. 웃음이죠.

It's one of the most common languages in the world.

세상에서 가장 흔히 쓰이는 언어 중 하나죠.

We don't have to explain it to each other, it's just something we all feel,

서로에게 설명해줄 필요도 없고 우리가 단순히 느끼는 거잖아요.

and that's why things like laughter and things like music are so prevalent,

그래서 웃음이나 음악 같은 것이 널리 퍼져있는 것입니다.

because they seem to somehow transcend explanation

왜냐하면 이것들은 어떻게든 설명을 초월해서

and convey a profound amount of meaning.

매우 심오한 의미를 내포하고 있기 때문입니다.

Every language we learn is a portal

우리가 배우는 모든 언어는 통로입니다.

by which we can access another language.

다른 언어로 접근할 수 있게 해주는 통로요.

The more you know, the more you can speak.

언어를 더 많이 알수록 더 많은 언어를 할 수 있습니다.

And it's something common that we all do.

우리가 모두 평소에 하는 흔한 일이죠.

We take any new concept, and we filter it through

새로운 개념을 접하게 되면

an already existing access of reality within us.

우리는 현실에 이미 존재하는 접근방식으로 해석합니다.

And that's why languages are so important,

이것이 언어가 매우 중요한 이유인데

because they give us access to new worlds,

새로운 세계에 다가갈 수 있게 해주기 때문이죠.

not just people.

사람뿐만이 아니라요.

It's not just about seeing or hearing, it's about feeling, experiencing, sharing.

단순히 보고 듣는 것만이 아니고 느끼고, 경험하고, 공유하는 것입니다.

And despite these languages that we've covered,

이 여러 언어들에 대해서 얘기했지만

I really don't think we've covered

가장 심오한 언어에 대해 아직 얘기하지 못한 것 같은데요.

one of the most profound languages,

and that's the language of experience.

경험의 언어입니다.

That's why when you're talking with someone,

그래서 다른 사람과 얘기를 할 때 서로 같은 경험을 공유한다면

if they've shared something you've shared, you don't need to explain it much.

더는 설명이 필요 없어지게 되는 겁니다.

Or that's why, when you're sharing a story and you finish,

그러한 이유로 여러분이 어떤 이야기를 들려줬을 때

and the people you're talking to don't quite get it,

듣고 있던 사람이 이해를 못하는 것 같으면

항상 첫 번째로 얘기하는 것이

the first thing we all say is,

"Guess you had to be there."

"직접 겪어봐야 알거야."인거죠.

I guess you had to be here this week to know what this is about.

이번 주에 여기 계셔야 이것이 무엇인지 이해할 수 있겠죠.

It's kind of hard to explain, isn't it?

설명하기 힘들죠, 그렇죠?

And for the sake of our research, I'm going to close by asking

그리고 저희의 연구를 위해서 다시 한번 경험이란 언어로

that you participate one more time in this language of experience.

동참해주시는 것으로 마무리하도록 하겠습니다.

I'm going to filter through some languages,

Do you speak this language?

When I was growing up in primary school,

제가 초등학생 때

at the end of the year, we would have these parties,

연말 파티를 열고는 했습니다.

그리고 놀이공원에 갈 것인지 워터파크에 갈 것인지 투표를 했었죠.

and we'd vote on whether we wanted to celebrate at an amusement park

or a water park.

And I would really hope the party wasn't at a water park,

저는 워터파크에서는 안했으면 하고 바랐는데

그러면 수영복을 입어야 했기 때문이죠.

because then I'd have to be in a bathing suit.

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I approach a dressing room,

여러분들은 어떠실지 모르겠지만 저는 가끔 탈의실에 가까워지면

땀샘이 제멋대로 작동해 버려요.

my sweat glands start activating on their own,

왜냐하면 제가 수영복을 입으면

because I know the garment is not going to look on me

마네킹에서 봤던 것과는 다를거라는 걸 알았기 때문이죠.

like it did on that mannequin.

Or how about this?

아니면 이런 건 어떻습니까?

가족 모임에 갈 때면

When I would go to family functions or family gatherings,

every time I wanted a second plate --

저는 항상 한 접시를 더 먹고 싶어할때마다,

and I usually did --

뭐 보통 더 먹긴 했습니다.

(Laughter)

it was a whole exercise in cost-benefit analysis,

손익분석 같은 것이었는데

my relatives looking at me like,

제 친척들이 저를 보면서 하는 말은 늘

"I don't know. Do you really need that? Looks like you're doing OK there, bud."

"글쎄, 정말 더 먹어야겠니? 충분히 먹은 것 같은데, 꼬맹이."

Did my cheeks have a big "Pinch me" sign that I didn't see?

제 볼에 "꼬집어주세요”라는 문구라도 있는건가요?

움찔하셨거나 웃으셨거나 일어서신 분,

And if you're squirming or you're laughing or you stood up,

or you're beginning to stand,

아니면 이제 막 일어서신 분들은

you're speaking the language that I endearingly call

여러분은 제가 애정을 담아 “뚱뚱한 아이로 자란 경험의 언어”라고

"the language of growing up a fat kid."

부르는 언어를 할 줄 아시는 겁니다.

And any body-image issue is a dialect of that language.

몸의 외형과 관련된 모든 문제는 이 언어의 다른 형태이죠.

I want you to stay standing.

Imagine two bills in my hand.

제 두 손에 고지서 두 개가 들려있다고 상상해 보세요.

One is the phone bill,

하나는 핸드폰 고지서이고

and one is the electric bill.

하나는 전기세 고지서입니다.

Eeny, meeny, miny, mo, pay one off, let the other one go,

어떤 것을 고를까요? 알아맞혀 보세요. 하나는 결제하고, 하나는 포기하고.

which means, "I might not have enough to pay both at the current moment."

즉, "지금 당장 두 개 다 납부할 돈이 없을 것 같아."

You've got to be resourceful. You've got to figure it out.

계획이 있어야 합니다. 방법을 생각해 내야 합니다.

And if you're standing, you know the language of barely making ends meet,

서 계신다면 ‘입에 풀칠하기’ 라는 언어를 아신다는 겁니다.

of financial struggle.

경제적 어려움이라는 것이죠.

And if you've been lucky enough to speak that language,

이 언어를 아는 행운아이신 분들은

you understand that there is no motivator of greatness like deficiency.

결핍보다 나은 동기부여가 없다는 사실을 아실 겁니다.

Not having resources, not having looks, not having finances

자원이 없고, 멋있지 못하고, 자본이 없는 것은

can often be the barren soil

척박한 땅과 마찬가지입니다.

from which the most productive seeds are painstakingly plowed and harvested.

이 땅에서 가장 생산적인 씨앗들이 힘들게 경작되고 수확됩니다.

I'm going to ask if you speak this language.

여러분이 이 언어를 알고 계신지 여쭤보겠습니다.

The second you recognize it, feel free to stand.

알고 계신다면 바로 일어서 주시면 됩니다.

When we heard the diagnosis,

진단 결과를 들었을 때

I thought, "Not that word.

저는 "안돼, 그 말 만큼은.

Anything but that word.

다른 말은 몰라도 그건 안돼."

I hate that word."

그 말은 정말 싫어."라고 생각했습니다.

And then you ask a series of questions:

그리고 온갖 질문을 하게 되죠.

"Are you sure?"

"확실해요?"

"Has it spread?"

"전이가 되었나요?"

"How long?"

"얼마나 남았나요?"

"Doctor, how long?"

"선생님, 얼마나요?"

And a series of answers determines a person's life.

그리고 몇 개의 답변이 그 사람의 삶을 결정짓게 되죠.

And when my dad was hungry, we'd all rush to the dinner table to eat,

저희 아버지가 배고프실 때 우리는 모두 식탁으로 몰려들었습니다.

because that's what we did before.

이전부터 그래왔었기 때문이죠.

We ate together, so we were going to continue doing that.

늘 식사를 함께 했으니 계속해서 그러려고 했어요.

And I didn't understand why we were losing this battle,

우리가 왜 이 싸움에서 지고 있는지 저는 몰랐습니다.

because I was taught if you fight and if you have the right spirit,

왜냐하면 올바른 정신으로 싸워나가면

you're supposed to win.

원래 이기는 것이라고 배웠기 때문이죠.

And we weren't winning.

그런데 지고 있었습니다.

For any of you that stood up,

방금 일어서신 분들은

you know very well that I'm speaking the language

제가 지금 얘기하는게 이 언어가

of watching a loved one battle cancer.

사랑하는 사람이 암과 싸우는 것을 지켜보는 언어라는 것을 아실겁니다.

Any terminal illness is a derivative of that language.

모든 불치병이 이 언어로부터 파생된 언어죠.

I'm going to speak one last language.

이제 마지막 언어를 말하겠습니다.

Oh -- no, no, I'm listening.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, no no, no no, me and you, right here, yup.

Or, imagine the lights are all off and a blue light is just shining in your face

as you're laying on the bed.

And I know some of you, like me,

저같이 여러분들 중 몇 분은

have dropped that phone right on your face.

Or this one, right?

Passenger seat freaking out, like, "Can you watch the road?"

And for anybody that stood up,

you speak the language that I like to call "the language of disconnection."

'단절의 언어'라 불리는 언어를 할 줄 아시는 겁니다.

It's been called the language of connection,

이건 연결의 언어라고 불렸었는데

but I like to call it the language of disconnection.

저는 '단절의 언어'라고 부르고 싶습니다.

이런 단절이 아니라 이런 단절이요.

I don't mean disconnection, I mean disconnection,

사람 관계의 단절입니다.

human disconnection,

disconnected from each other,

서로에게서 단절되는 것,

from where we are, from our own thoughts,

우리가 있는 공간과 생각으로부터 단절되는 겁니다.

so we can occupy another space.

그리고 다른 공간을 차지하는 것이죠.

If you're not standing,

혹시 일어서 계시지 않으면

you probably know what it's like to feel left out.

소외된 느낌을 아실 겁니다.

You probably -- you know what it's like when everybody's a part of something,

and you're not.

You know what it's like being the minority.

And now that I'm speaking your language,

since we're speaking the same language.

Because I believe that language of being the minority

is one of the most important languages you can ever speak in your life,

because how you feel in that position of compromise

Most the girls in the world are complainin' about it.

No matter how many books, how many seminars,

책을 얼마나 읽었든 세미나를 얼마나 많이 다녔든

how many life-coaching sessions we go to,

얼마나 많은 인생 상담을 받았든

we just can't get enough of it.

우린 이것을 충분히 취할 수 없습니다.

And I ask you now:

Is that number that you had at the beginning, has that changed?
