PA: I want to ask you guys a question. How many languages do you speak?

This is not a rhetorical question.

I actually want you to think of a number.

頭の中で数字を出してください

For some of you, it's pretty easy.

簡単だと思う人もいるでしょう

Inside your head, you're like, "It's one. You're speaking it, buddy. I'm done."

「１つだね　あんたが今話してるだろ 以上！」みたいな

逆に迷っている人もいるでしょう

Others of you maybe are wondering

「元カレや元カノから 罵り言葉ばかり教わった言語も

if the language an ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend taught you,

数に入れていいのかな」

where you learned all the cusswords,

もちろんいいですよ　自分に優しくね

if it counts -- go ahead and count it.

When I asked myself the question, I came up with four,

僕自身 数えてみたら４つでした

arguably five, if I've been drinking.

お酒が入ると５つになるという説も

But on closer examination, I came up with 83 -- 83 languages,

ところが よくよく考えてみたら 83言語にもなり

and I got tired and I stopped counting.

83で数え疲れて 止めましたが

And it forced me to revisit this definition that we have of language.

「言語」というものの定義を 見直さざるをえなくなりました

The first entry said,

辞書の最初の定義は

"The method of human communication, either spoken or written,

「人間のコミュニケーション手段 音声または文字の形をとる

consisting of the use of words in a structured or conventional way."

特定の構造や慣例に従った 語の使用から成る」

The definition at the bottom refers to specialized fields,

最後に出てくる定義は

医学 科学 技術など 専門分野に関するものです

like medicine, science, tech.

We know they have their own vernacular,

独特の言い回し つまり専門用語がありますから

their own jargon.

But what most interested me was that definition right in the center there:

でも僕が一番気になったのは ど真ん中にある定義です

「特定の集団や国で使われる コミュニケーションの仕組み」

"the system of communication used by a particular community or country."

And I'm not interested in altering this definition.

この定義を変えたいわけではありません

I'm interested in applying it to everything we do,

人間が携わる全ての物事に 当てはめてみたいんです

人は自分で思っているより ずっと たくさんの言語がわかるはずですから

because I believe that we speak far more languages than we realize.

And for the rest of our time together,

では トークが終わるまで

I'm going to attempt to speak in one language

ある１つの言語を使いたいと思います

that is native to every single human being in this room.

皆さん全員がネイティブである言語です

But that changes things a little bit,

そうすると 少し趣向が変わり

もはや「講演」ではなくなります

because then it's no longer a presentation.

It becomes a conversation,

「会話」になります

and in any conversation,

「会話」である以上

there must be some sort of interaction.

何らかのやりとりが必要です

And for any interaction to happen,

やりとりをするためには

there has to be a degree of willingness on both parties.

ある程度の意欲が 双方に なければなりません

And I think if we just are willing, we will see the magic that can happen

意欲さえあれば すごいことが起こることもあります

with just a little bit of willingness.

少しばかり意欲があればいいのです

So I've chosen a relatively low-risk common denominator

そこで 比較的リスクが低く 万人に通じる体験を選んで

that can kind of gauge if we're all willing.

Now, if that felt a little bit awkward,

I promise there was no joke being had at your expense.

I simply asked the Spanish-speaking audience to stand up,

単に スペイン語がわかる皆さんに 立ち上がってもらい

look at a person that was sitting close to them and laugh.

近くに座っている人を見て 笑い声を上げてもらっただけです

And I know that wasn't nice, and I'm sorry,

ちょっと意地悪でしたよね ごめんなさい

but in that moment,

でも この短い時間で

some of us felt something.

何かを感じた人がいるはずです

You see, we're often aware of what language does

他の人の母語を話すと しばしば言語の働きに気づかされます

when we speak somebody's language,

つながりや絆を生むといった 効果のことです

what it does to connect, what it does to bind.

But we often forget what it does when you can't speak that language,

一方で その言語がわからない人に 与える作用を忘れがちです

what it does to isolate, what it does to exclude.

相手を孤立させ 疎外感を感じさせてしまうということに

And I want us to hold on as we journey through

この感覚を意識しながら

our little walk of languages here.

言語について 色々とお話していきましょう

(In Farsi: I'd like to translate the idea of "taarof.")

I said in Farsi, "I'd like to translate

（英語）今 ペルシャ語で

「ペルシャ文化における“t'aarof”という 概念を説明したい」と言いました

this idea of 'taarof' in the Persian culture,"

which, really -- it has no equivalent in the English lexicon.

英語には相当する言葉が存在しません

The best definition would be something like an extreme grace

あえて言うなら「極度の礼儀正しさ

or an extreme humility.

極度の謙遜」あたりですが

But that doesn't quite get the job done.

いまいち言い表わせていません

So I'll give you an example.

なので例を出します

男性２人がバッタリ会ったら

If two gentlemen were walking by each other,

大抵 ひとりが 相手のほうを向いてこう言います

it'd be very common for the first one to say,

(In Farsi: I am indebted to you),

（ペルシャ語）

which means, "I am indebted to you."

（英語）意味は「あなたに恩がある」です

The other gentlemen would respond back,

もうひとりはこう返答します

(In Farsi: I open my shirt for you)

（ペルシャ語）

（英語）意味は 「あなたのためにシャツを開こう」です

which means, "I open my shirt for you."

The first guy would respond back,

相手はこう返事します

(In Farsi: I am your servant)

（ペルシャ語）

「私はあなたの召使だ」

which means, "I am your servant."

And then the second guy would respond back to him,

それに対し 相手はさらに こう言います

（ペルシャ語）

(In Farsi: I am the dirt beneath your feet)

（英語）文字通りに訳すと 「私はあなたが踏みつけている土」

which literally means, "I am the dirt beneath your feet."

(Laughter)

Here's an exhibit for you guys, in case you didn't get the picture.

And I share that with you, because

with new languages come new concepts that didn't exist before.

知らない言語には それまで知らなかった 概念がついてくるものだからです

And the other thing is,

もうひとつ言うと

sometimes we think language is about understanding the meaning of a word,

言語といえば単語の意味を理解することだ と考える人もいますが

but I believe language is about making a word meaningful for yourself.

僕は言語とは 単語に自分にとっての 意味付けをすることだと考えています

If I were to flash this series of words on the screen,

ここにある単語の羅列を パッとスクリーンに映した場合

some of you, you'd know exactly what it is right away.

これが何なのか即 理解できる人もいるし

Others of you, you might struggle a little bit.

若干解読に苦労する人もいるでしょう

And I could probably draw a pretty clear-cut line

「多分 ここを境にはっきりと分かれる」 っていう線が

right around the age of 35 and older, 35 and younger.

35歳以上か 35歳以下か だと思います

And for those of us that are in the know,

理解できる年齢層の皆さんは

we know that's text-speak, or SMS language.

今のがショートメール特有の SMS語だとわかります

It's a series of characters meant to convey the most amount of meaning

最大限の意味を最小限の文字に込めた 文字列のことで

with the least amount of characters,

which sounds pretty similar to our definition of languages:

そう言うと 「言語」の定義に 結構似ていますよね

"system of communication used by a community."

「特定の集団で使われる コミュニケーションの仕組み」

Now, anyone who's ever got into an argument via text

さて ショートメール上で 喧嘩になったことがある人なら

can make a case for how it's maybe not the best method of communication,

コミュニケーション方法としては 今ひとつだと証言できるでしょう

but what if I told you that what you saw earlier

でも 今 お見せしたものが

was a modern-day love letter?

今どきのラブレターだとしたら？

If you follow along:

In any case, keep in touch, no response necessary,

all my best wishes, don't know, don't care if anyone sees this.

you only live once."

Kind of a modern-day Romeo or Juliet.

現代のロミオかジュリエットってとこですね

In that moment, if you laughed,

さて 今 笑った人 もうひとつ別の言語がわかるということです

you spoke another language that needs no explanation: laughter.

説明不要の言語「笑い」です

It's one of the most common languages in the world.

世界で最も普遍的な共通言語のひとつです

We don't have to explain it to each other, it's just something we all feel,

誰も説明を必要としないし 誰にでも自然に起こるものです

and that's why things like laughter and things like music are so prevalent,

お笑いや音楽がどこにでもあるのは そういうわけです

because they seem to somehow transcend explanation

不思議と 言葉での説明を超越し

and convey a profound amount of meaning.

膨大な量の意味を伝える力があるからです

どんな言語を学んでも

Every language we learn is a portal

別の言語への入り口になります

by which we can access another language.

The more you know, the more you can speak.

知れば知るほど 表現が広がります

And it's something common that we all do.

誰でもしていることですが

We take any new concept, and we filter it through

新しく出会った概念を

自分にとっての既知の現実 という枠を通して見ています

an already existing access of reality within us.

And that's why languages are so important,

だからこそ言語は重要なのです

because they give us access to new worlds,

他人とだけでなく 新しい世界とも繋がる手段だからです

not just people.

It's not just about seeing or hearing, it's about feeling, experiencing, sharing.

その本質は 見る 聞くことだけでなく 感じ 体験し 共有することでもあるのです

And despite these languages that we've covered,

さて 様々な言語を取り上げましたが

I really don't think we've covered

まだ この世で最も深遠な部類に入る 言語の話はしていません

one of the most profound languages,

and that's the language of experience.

「経験」という言語です

That's why when you're talking with someone,

だから 誰かと話をしているとき

お互い経験済みの話であれば あまり説明する必要がなく

if they've shared something you've shared, you don't need to explain it much.

Or that's why, when you're sharing a story and you finish,

だからこそ 経験談を話していて

and the people you're talking to don't quite get it,

相手が いまいち話についてこれないとき

誰もがまず こう言うのです

the first thing we all say is,

"Guess you had to be there."

「実際その場にいてみないとね」

I guess you had to be here this week to know what this is about.

この話だって 今この場にいないと 実感がわかないものかもしれません

It's kind of hard to explain, isn't it?

この感覚 説明しがたいですよね

And for the sake of our research, I'm going to close by asking

研究も兼ねて 最後は もう一度 皆さんに参加してもらいます

that you participate one more time in this language of experience.

今度は「経験」という言語です

I'm going to filter through some languages,

これから登場する言語が

and if I'm speaking your language,

ご自分が知っている言語だったら

I'm going to ask that you just stand and you stay standing.

立ち上がって そのまま立っていてください

You don't need to ask permission,

ご自分の判断で

「わかるよ」と示してください

just let me know that you see me,

and I can also see you

そうすれば僕にも 皆さんがこの

if you speak this language of experience.

「経験」という言語がわかるのだと わかりますから

Do you speak this language?

さあ この言語がわかりますか？

When I was growing up in primary school,

子供のころ

小学校では 学年末にお祝い会があって

at the end of the year, we would have these parties,

いつも場所を多数決で

and we'd vote on whether we wanted to celebrate at an amusement park

遊園地かウォーターパークか選んでいた

or a water park.

And I would really hope the party wasn't at a water park,

ウォーターパークだけは嫌だった

水着を着なきゃいけないから

because then I'd have to be in a bathing suit.

I don't know about you, but sometimes when I approach a dressing room,

みんなはどうか知らないけど 僕は試着室の前に来ると

時々 勝手に汗が出てくる

my sweat glands start activating on their own,

だって試着した服が 僕の体型じゃ

because I know the garment is not going to look on me

マネキンみたいにはならないと 予想がつくから

like it did on that mannequin.

Or how about this?

あとはこれ

When I would go to family functions or family gatherings,

家族親戚のお祝いや 集まりの席で

every time I wanted a second plate --

おかわりをしたいとき —

and I usually did --

いつもだったけど —

(Laughter)

（笑）

it was a whole exercise in cost-benefit analysis,

したらどうなるかという計算で 頭がいっぱいだった

my relatives looking at me like,

親戚の僕を見る目が

「まだ食べる気か？　もういいだろ？」 って感じだったからさ

"I don't know. Do you really need that? Looks like you're doing OK there, bud."

Did my cheeks have a big "Pinch me" sign that I didn't see?

ほっぺたに「つねって」って 見えない文字でもあったのかな

ここで もじもじし始めた人 笑った人 立ち上がった人

And if you're squirming or you're laughing or you stood up,

or you're beginning to stand,

立ち上がろうとしている人

you're speaking the language that I endearingly call

あなたが理解した言語は 僕が愛を込めて名付けた —

「子供の頃太っていた語」です

"the language of growing up a fat kid."

And any body-image issue is a dialect of that language.

体型に関する劣等感はどれも この言語の方言のようなものです

I want you to stay standing.

立ったままでいてください

Again, if I'm speaking your language, please go ahead and stand.

僕の話す言語がわかる人は 立ってくださいね

Imagine two bills in my hand.

請求書を２枚握っているとして

One is the phone bill,

１つは電話料金

and one is the electric bill.

もう１つは電気料金

Eeny, meeny, miny, mo, pay one off, let the other one go,

「ど・ち・ら・に・し・よ・う 片方払って 片方捨てよう」

which means, "I might not have enough to pay both at the current moment."

要は「今は両方支払う余裕がない」ってこと

You've got to be resourceful. You've got to figure it out.

知恵を絞って 切り抜けなきゃなんない

And if you're standing, you know the language of barely making ends meet,

今 立った人は

ギリギリでやりくりする「生活苦」 という言語がわかったということです

of financial struggle.

And if you've been lucky enough to speak that language,

この言語が話せるくらいの経験を持つ 恵まれた皆さんは

you understand that there is no motivator of greatness like deficiency.

「欠乏」ほど向上心をかき立てるものはない ということをご存知でしょう

Not having resources, not having looks, not having finances

資質に恵まれない 容姿に恵まれない 金銭的に恵まれない

そんな 「痩せた土地」こそ

can often be the barren soil

from which the most productive seeds are painstakingly plowed and harvested.

懸命に耕され 最も実りある種が 収穫されることも多いのです

I'm going to ask if you speak this language.

次の言語はわかるでしょうか

The second you recognize it, feel free to stand.

ピンと来たらすぐに立ってください

When we heard the diagnosis,

告知を聞いた時

I thought, "Not that word.

「勘弁してよ」って思った

Anything but that word.

「よりにもよってそれかよ

I hate that word."

それだけは嫌だ」

And then you ask a series of questions:

次に 質問を始める

"Are you sure?"

「確かですか？」

"Has it spread?"

「転移してるんですか」

"How long?"

「あとどのくらいなんですか 先生」

"Doctor, how long?"

And a series of answers determines a person's life.

これに続く返答で 誰かの余命が判明するんだ

And when my dad was hungry, we'd all rush to the dinner table to eat,

食欲がありそうなら 家族全員テーブルに急いだ

because that's what we did before.

いつも家族みんな一緒に食べてたから

We ate together, so we were going to continue doing that.

これからもずっとそうするんだから と

And I didn't understand why we were losing this battle,

負けが見えてきて なぜなのか理解できなかった

because I was taught if you fight and if you have the right spirit,

だって 何かと戦うとき 正しい精神で臨めば

you're supposed to win.

必ず勝てるって教わってきたから

And we weren't winning.

なのに 勝てないなんて

For any of you that stood up,

立ち上がった人は

you know very well that I'm speaking the language

よくおわかりのはず

今のは「愛する家族が がんと戦うのを見守る」という言語です

of watching a loved one battle cancer.

(Applause)

Any terminal illness is a derivative of that language.

死に至る病なら どれもが この言語の派生言語だといえます

I'm going to speak one last language.

これから話す言語が最後です

Oh -- no, no, I'm listening.

いや 聞いてるって

Yeah, yeah, yeah, no no, no no, me and you, right here, yup.

はいはい いや そうじゃなくて 聞いてるってば

No, I'm with ya. I'm with ya!

だから聞いてるだろっての

(Laughter)

Or, imagine the lights are all off and a blue light is just shining in your face

真っ暗な部屋で ブルーライトが顔を照らす中

as you're laying on the bed.

ベッドに横になっている

And I know some of you, like me,

皆さんの中にも 僕みたいに

have dropped that phone right on your face.

顔に携帯を落っことした人がいるはず

(Laughter)

Or this one, right?

こんなのもありますね？

Passenger seat freaking out, like, "Can you watch the road?"

助手席ではパニック 「道路を見ろっての！」

And for anybody that stood up,

立ち上がった人は

you speak the language that I like to call "the language of disconnection."

僕が「つながりを断つ言語」と 呼ぶものがわかる人です

It's been called the language of connection,

「つながりを求める言語」だと 言われますが

but I like to call it the language of disconnection.

「つながりを断つ」がいいと思います

「つながるに飢える」ではなく 「断絶」のほうの意味です

I don't mean disconnection, I mean disconnection,

人と人の断絶です

human disconnection,

disconnected from each other,

お互いからの断絶

from where we are, from our own thoughts,

今いる場所や 自分の思考からの断絶

so we can occupy another space.

心はどこか他の場所にあるのです

If you're not standing,

まだ座っている人は

you probably know what it's like to feel left out.

取り残される気持ちがおわかりでしょう

You probably -- you know what it's like when everybody's a part of something,

こんな気持ちがわかるはずですね 誰もが皆 参加しているのに —

and you're not.

自分は違う

You know what it's like being the minority.

そんな少数派の気持ちです

And now that I'm speaking your language,

皆さんの言語を話しているので

どうぞ立ってください

I'm going to ask you to stand,

since we're speaking the same language.

共通の言語を話しているわけですから

Because I believe that language of being the minority

この少数派であるという言語は

皆さんが学ぶ言語の中でも 最も重要な部類に入ります

is one of the most important languages you can ever speak in your life,

because how you feel in that position of compromise

弱い立場に置かれたときに感じることが

will directly determine how you act in that position of power.

逆に自分が強い立場に立ったときの 行動を決定するでしょう

Most the music on the radio be hittin' about it, kickin' about it,

or rippin' about it.

Most the verses in the game people spittin' about it,

歌謡業界じゃ歌詞として 吐き出される「アレ」

世界中の歌のほとんどで 語られてる「アレ」

most the songs in the world, people talkin' about it.

Most the broken hearts I know are walkin' without it,

失恋した知り合いのほとんどが 失ったまま歩き回るか

started to doubt it,

存在を疑い始めるか

or lost without it.

失って途方に暮れる「アレ」

Most the shadows in the dark have forgotten about it.

暗闇に潜む影のほとんどが 忘れ去ってしまった「アレ」

Everybody in the world would be trippin' without it.

世界中誰もがそれなしでは 正気を失う「アレ」

Every boy and every girl will be dead without it,

男も女も誰も それなしでは 生きていけず

struggle without it, nothing without it.

苦しみ 空っぽになる「アレ」

Most the pages that are filled are filled about it.

埋まったページのほとんどが その話で埋まる「アレ」

["It" = Love]

［「アレ」＝愛］

The tears that are spilled are spilled about it.

流される涙は そのために流される「アレ」

The people that have felt it are real about it.

感じたことのある人は 正直に認める「アレ」

A life without it, you'd be lost.

それなしの人生では 目的を見失ってしまう「アレ」

When I'm in it and I feel it, I be shoutin' about it.

その渦中にいれば 大声で語りたくなる「アレ」

Everybody in the whole world knowin' about it.

全世界誰もが何のことか知ってる「アレ」

I'm hurt and broke down and be flowin' about it,

それを拒絶した俺は間違ってた と

傷心 絶望 慟哭する「アレ」

goin' about it wrong 'cause I didn't allow it.

それなしでは 心の傷や痛みは癒えない「アレ」

Can the wound or scar heal without it?

それについて感じていることは 隠せない「アレ」

Can't the way that you feel be concealed about it?

Everybody has their own ideal about it,

それについて誰もが理想を持ち

dream about it,

夢を見て 懇願する「アレ」

appeal about it.

So what's the deal about it?

「アレ」の何がそんなにすごいんだろう

Are you 'bout it to know that life is a dream

「アレ」なしじゃ 人生も夢に過ぎないって

and unreal without it?

真剣に知ろうとしてるってこと？

物書きでしかない僕が 「アレ」について何を明かせるというのか

But I'm just a writer.

What can I reveal about it?

Why is it that the most spoken-about language in the world

どうして 世界で最も 万人に語られている言語が

is the one we have the toughest time speaking or expressing?

言い表すとなると 最も苦労する言語なのでしょうか

No matter how many books, how many seminars,

どれだけ本を読んで セミナーに出て

how many life-coaching sessions we go to,

どれだけライフ・コーチングの セッションを受けても

we just can't get enough of it.

飽き足りることがありません

And I ask you now:

さて お聞きしますが

Is that number that you had at the beginning, has that changed?

冒頭に数えていただいた 言語の数は変わりましたか？

And I challenge you, when you see someone,

次誰かに会ったときは

to ask yourself:

ぜひ考えてみてください

What languages do we share?

「この人と共通の言語は何だろう」

And if you don't come up with anything,

何も思い浮かばなければ

「では 何の言語を共有できるだろう」 と考えてみましょう

ask yourself: What languages could we share?

And if you still don't come up with anything,

それでも何も思い浮かばないなら

ask yourself: What languages can I learn?

「自分は何の言語を学べるだろうか」 と考えてください

And now matter how inconsequential

その会話がどんなに自分には

無関係でどうでもいいことのように その時は思えたとしても

or insignificant that conversation seems at the moment,

I promise you it will serve you in the future.
