Not that long ago,

I received an invitation

But then, I actually do feel these impressions in the brick.

Sometimes, we try to rationalize hard history.

Now as a historian, I spend a lot of time thinking about this very statement,

My great-great-grandfather was born enslaved

And so when he passed away in the early 1990s,

Now Crown Heights, at the time, was an all-Black neighborhood,

and it was kind of rough.

My brother and I often went to sleep,

by the mid-1980s,

hearing gunshots.

But my parents protected us,

and my parents also held onto that home.

For 40 years.

And they're still there.

ခုထိလည်း သူတို့နေတုန်းပဲ

But something quintessentially American happened

ဒါပေမဲ့ အမေရိကန်မှာ ဩချရလောက်တဲ့ အဖြစ်အပျက်တစ်ခု ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်

about 20 years ago.

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ် နှစ်ဆယ်ခန့်ကပါ

About 20 years ago,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ် နှစ်ဆယ်ခန့်က

they went to sleep one night in an all-Black neighborhood,

တစ်ညမှာ သူတို့ လူမဲအိမ်နီးချင်းတွေ ဝန်းရံပြီး အိပ်ရာဝင်ခဲ့တယ်

and they woke up the next morning

နောက်နေ့မနက် နိုးလာတော့ အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေက

in an all-white neighborhood.

လူဖြူတွေဖြစ်နေရောလေ

And as a result of gentrification,

ဒီလိုပြောင်းလဲလိုက်မှုရဲ့ အကျိုးဆက်က

not only did all their neighbors mysteriously disappear,

အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေအကုန် ထူးထူးဆန်းဆန်း ပျောက်သွားရုံတင်မက

but the value of their home

သူတို့အိမ်ရဲ့တန်ဖိုးက

skyrocketed.

မိုးထိ မြင့်တက်သွားတယ်

So that home that they purchased for 55,000 dollars --

ဒါကြောင့် သူတို့ဒေါ်လာ ၅၅,၀၀၀ နဲ့ ဝယ်ခဲ့တဲ့အိမ်က

at 29 percent interest, by the way --

စကားမစပ် အတိုး ၂၅ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းနဲ့ဝယ်ခဲ့တာနော်

that home is now worth 30 times what they paid it for.

အဲဒီအိမ်က သူတို့ဝယ်ထားတဲ့ဈေးရဲ့ အဆ ၃၀ ထိ တက်သွားတယ်

Thirty times.

အဆသုံးဆယ်

Do the math with me.

တွက်ကြည့်ရအောင်

That's 55,000 times 30, carry the zeros --

၅၅,၀၀၀ ကို ၃၀ နဲ့မြှောက် သုညတွေထည့်လိုက်

That's a lot of money.

ပိုက်ဆံတွေ အများကြီးနော်

So that means,

ဒီတော့ ဆိုလိုတာက

as their single and sole asset,

သူတို့ရဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော ပိုင်ဆိုင်မှု

when the time comes for them to pass that asset on to my brother and I,

ကျွန်တော်နဲ့ကျွန်တော့်အစ်ကိုကို လွှဲပေးရမဲ့အချိန်ပဲ

that will be the first time in my family's history,

ဒီလိုမျိုးဖြစ်တာကျွန်တော့ မိသားစုသမိုင်းမှာ ပထမဆုံးအကြိမ်ပဲ

more than 150 years after the end of slavery,

ကျွန်ပြုခံရခြင်းတွေ ပြီးဆုံးပြီး နှစ်ပေါင်း ၁၅၀ကျော်အကြာမှာ

that there will be a meaningful transfer of wealth in my family.

ကျွန်တော့်မိသားစုမှာ သူ့တို့စည်းစိမ်ကို ကိုလွှဲပြောင်းပေးနိုင်တဲ့ အခါရောက်လာတာပဲ

And it's not because family members haven't saved,

မလွှဲပြောင်းနိုင်တာက မိသားစုဝင်တွေ မစုဆောင်းခဲ့လို့ မဟုတ်

haven't worked hard,

အလုပ်မကြိုးစားခဲ့လို့ မဟုတ်

haven't valued education.

ပညာမကြိုးစားခဲ့လို့ မဟုတ်ဘူး

It's because of hard history.

ကြမ်းတမ်းခက်ခဲတဲ့ သမိုင်းကြောင့်မို့လို့ပါ

So when I think about the past,

ကျွန်တော်အတိတ်အကြောင်း စဉ်းစားတဲ့အခါ

my concern about not remembering it

သမိုင်းကို မမှတ်မိတာကို ဂရုမစိုက်ဘူး

is not that we will repeat it if we don't remember it.

ကျွန်တော်တို့မမှတ်မိရင် ဒီအထဲမှာတဝဲလည်လည် ဖြစ်နေတာကို ဂရုမစိုက်ဘူး

My concern, my fear is that if we don't remember the past,

ကျွန်တော်ဂရုစိုက်တာ ကျွန်တော်ကြောက်တာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ အတိတ်ကိုမမှတ်မိဘူးဆိုရင်

we will continue it.

အဲဒါကို ဆက်လုပ်ကြမှာကိုပဲ

We will continue to do the things

မညီမျှမှုတွေ တရားမျှတမှုတွေကို ဖြစ်စေတဲ့

that created inequality and injustice in the first place.

အရာတွေကို ဆက်လုပ်ကြလိမ့်မိမယ်

So what we must do

ဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော်တို့ လုပ်ရမှာက

is we must disrupt the continuum of hard history.

ကြမ်းတမ်းခက်ခဲတဲ့သမိုင်း ဆက်ဖြစ်မှာကို တာဆီးရမယ်

And we can do this by seeking truth.

ဒါကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ အမှန်တရားကို ရှာဖွေရင်းနဲ့ လုပ်ရမယ်

By confronting hard history directly.

ကြမ်းတမ်းခက်ခဲတဲ့သမိုင်းကို တိုက်ရိုက် ရင်ဆိုင်ဖြေရှင်းရင်း

By magnifying hard history for all the world to see.

တစ်ကမ္ဘာလုံးအတွက် ကြမ်းတမ်းတဲ့သမိုင်းရဲ့ အကျိုးဆက်တွေကို သေချာကြည့်ရင်းနဲ့

We can do this by speaking truth.

အမှန်တရားကို ပြောရင်းနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့ အဲဒါကို လုပ်နိုင်တယ်

Teachers teaching hard history to their students.

ဆရာတွေက သူတို့ကျောင်းသားတွေကို ကြမ်းတမ်းခဲ့တဲ့ သမိုင်းတွေအကြောင်း သင်မယ်

To do anything else is to commit educational malpractice.

အခြားလုပ်ဖို့ရှိတာကတော့ ပညာရေး မသမာမှုတွေကို ဝန်ခံခိုင်းဖို့ပဲ

And parents have to speak truth to their children,

မိဘတွေက ကလေးတွေကို အမှန်ပြောပြရမယ်

so that they understand

အဲဒါမှ ကျွန်တော်တို့အကုန်လုံးက

where we have come from as a nation.

တစ်နိုင်ငံတည်းသားတွေဆိုတာ သူတို့နားလည်မှာ

And finally, we must all act on truth.

နောက်ဆုံးလုပ်ရမှာက ကျွန်တော်တို့ အမှန်တရားကို လက်ခံကျင့်သုံးရမယ်

Individually and collectively,

တစ်ယောက်ချင်းစီ ပြီးတော့ စုပေါင်းပြီးတော့

publicly and privately,

လူထုအလယ်မှာရော တစ်ယောက်တည်းနေရင်ရော

in small ways and in large ways.

နည်းလမ်းနည်းနည်းနဲ့ဖြစ်စေ၊ နည်းလမ်းမျိုးစုံသုံးပြီး ဖြစ်စေ

We must do the things that will bend the arc of the moral universe

ကမ္ဘာကြီးရဲ့ တစ်စိတ်တစ်ပိုင်းကိုပဲ ဖြစ်ဖြစ် တရားမျှတမှုရရှိစေမယ့် အရာတွေကို

towards justice.

To do nothing is to be complicit

in inequality.

History reminds us

သမိုင်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို သတိပေးတယ်

that we, as a nation,

နိုင်ငံတစ်နိုင်ငံ အနေနဲ့ ကျွန်တော်တို့က

stand on the shoulders of political giants

James Madison တို့လို့ နိုင်ငံရေး အင်အားကြီးတဲ့လူတွေအပေါ်

like James Madison.

မှီခိုရတယ်

But hard history reminds us that we, as a nation,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကြမ်းတမ်းခက်ခဲတဲ့သမိုင်းက ကျွန်တော်တို့သည် နိုင်ငံတစ်နိုင်ငံအနေနဲ့

also stand on the shoulders of enslaved African American children.

ကျွန်ပြုခံရတဲ့ အာဖရိကန်အမေရိကန်ဖွားကလေးတွေ အပေါ်မှာမှီခိုနေရတယ်ဆိုတာကို သတိပေးနေတယ်

Little Black boys and little Black girls

လူမည်းအမျိုးသားလေးတွေ လူမည်းအမျိုးသမီးလေးတွေ

who, with their bare hands, made the bricks

သူတို့ရဲ့လက်ဗလာနဲ့ အုတ်ခဲတွေလုပ်ခဲ့ပြီး

that serve as the foundation for this nation.

ဒီနိုင်ငံရဲ့ အုတ်မြစ်အဖြစ် တာဝန်ထမ်းဆောင်ခဲ့ကြတယ်

And if we are serious about creating a fair and just society,

ကျွန်တော်တို့က တရားမျှတမှုရှိတဲ့ လူမှုပတ်ဝန်းကျင်တစ်ခု တကယ်ဖန်တီးချင်ရင်

then we would do well to remember that,

အဲဒါကို ကျွန်တော်တို့ မှတ်မိနေရမယ်

and we would do well to remember them.

သူတို့ကိုလည်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ မှတ်ထားရမယ်
