You know how people tell you if you get nervous when onstage,

picture people in the audience naked?

Like it's this thing that's supposed to make you feel better.

But I was thinking --

पण मला वाटलं, की

picturing all of you naked in 2018 feels kind of weird and wrong.

आज, २०१८ साली विवस्त्र प्रेक्षकांची कल्पना करणं विचित्र आणि चुकीचं ठरेल.

Like, we're working really hard on moving past stuff like that,

आपण या असल्या गोष्टी मागे टाकण्याचा प्रयत्न करत आहोत.

so we need a new method of dealing with

if you get nervous onstage.

And I realized that what I'd really like

is that I can look at you as much as you're looking at me --

just to even things out a little bit.

So if I had way more eyeballs,

So in preparation for this talk, I made myself a shirt.

It's googly eyes.

It took me 14 hours

and 227 googly eyes to make this shirt.

And being able to look at you as much as you're looking at me

is actually only half of the reason I made this.

So I do a lot of things like this.

I see a problem and I invent some sort of solution to it.

For example, brushing your teeth.

Like, it's this thing we all have to do, it's kind of boring,

So what about if you had a machine that could do it for you?

I call it ...

I call it "The Toothbrush Helmet."

नाव ठेवलं आहे.. टूथब्रश हेल्मेट.

(Laughter)

So my toothbrush helmet is recommended by zero out of 10 dentists,

माझ्या या टूथब्रश हेल्मेटची शिफारस दहापैकी शून्य दंतवैद्यांनी केली आहे.

and it definitely did not revolutionize the world of dentistry,

but it did completely change my life.

Because I finished making this toothbrush helmet three years ago

and after I finished making it,

I went into my living room and I put up a camera,

thousands of men voyage into the comment sections

to ask for her hand in marriage --

She ignores all of them, starts a YouTube channel

पण तिकडे लक्ष न देता ती एक YouTube चॅनल काढते,

and keeps on building robots.

Since then, I've carved out this little niche for myself on the internet

त्यावेळेपासून मी इंटरनेटवर स्वतःचं एक स्थान निर्माण केलं आहे.

as an inventor of useless machines,

because as we all know,

आपण सर्व जाणताच, की

the easiest way to be at the top of your field

is to choose a very small field.

So I run a YouTube channel about my machines,

and I've done things like cutting hair with drones --

I'm not an engineer.

मी अभियंती नाही.

I did not study engineering in school.

मी विद्यापीठात अभियांत्रिकी शिक्षण घेतलं नाही.

But I was a super ambitious student growing up.

पण शाळेत असताना मी खूप महत्त्वाकांक्षी होते.

In middle school and high school, I had straight A's,

माध्यमिक शाळेत मी सतत ए ग्रेड मिळवत असे.

and I graduated at the top of my year.

वर्गात मी पहिल्या क्रमांकावर होते.

On the flip side of that,

पण याची दुसरी बाजू अशी, की

I struggled with very severe performance anxiety.

Here's an email I sent to my brother around that time.

"You won't understand how difficult it is for me to tell you,

to confess this.

I'm so freaking embarrassed.

मला खूप शरम वाटते आहे.

I don't want people to think that I'm stupid.

मी मूर्ख आहे, असं लोकांना वाटायला नको.

Now I'm starting to cry too.

आता मला रडू येतंय.

Damn."

And no, I did not accidentally burn our parents' house down.

नाही, मी काही घराला चुकून आग वगैरे लावली नव्हती.

The thing I'm writing about in the email and the thing I'm so upset about

ज्या गोष्टीविषयी मी इतकं अस्वस्थ होऊन ईमेल मध्ये लिहिलं ती गोष्ट होती,

is that I got a B on a math test.

गणिताच्या परीक्षेत मिळालेली बी ग्रेड.

So something obviously happened between here and here.

तो काळ आणि हा काळ... मधल्या काळात नक्कीच काहीतरी घडलं असलं पाहिजे.

(Laughter)

One of those things was puberty.

त्यापैकी एक.. पौगंडावस्था.

(Laughter)

(हशा)

Beautiful time indeed.

खरंच, सुंदर काळ होता तो.

But moreover,

आणि त्याच काळात

I got interested in building robots,

मला यंत्रं बनवणंही आवडू लागलं.

and I wanted to teach myself about hardware.

हार्डवेअरबद्दल जास्त शिकावंसं वाटू लागलं.

But building things with hardware, especially if you're teaching yourself,

पण स्वतःच स्वतःला हार्डवेअरबद्दल शिकवणं,

is something that's really difficult to do.

आणि त्यापासून यंत्रं बनवणं हे अतिशय कठीण आहे.

It has a high likelihood of failure

त्यात अपयश येण्याची शक्यता आहे.

and moreover,

it has a high likelihood of making you feel stupid.

And that was my biggest fear at the time.

So I came up with a setup that would guarantee success 100 percent of the time.

With my setup, it would be nearly impossible to fail.

And that was that instead of trying to succeed,

I was going to try to build things that would fail.

कुचकामी यंत्रं बनवायची.

And even though I didn't realize it at the time,

त्यावेळी माझ्या लक्षात आलं नव्हतं,की

building stupid things was actually quite smart,

कुचकामी गोष्टी बनवायलासुद्धा अक्कल लागते.

because as I kept on learning about hardware,

हार्डवेअरबद्दल शिकताना,

for the first time in my life,

आयुष्यात पहिल्यांदाच,

I did not have to deal with my performance anxiety.

मला यशाची चिंता वाटेनाशी झाली.

And as soon as I removed all pressure and expectations from myself,

स्वतःवर लादलेलं अपेक्षांचं दडपण दूर केल्यावर

that pressure quickly got replaced by enthusiasm,

त्याची जागा उत्साहाने घेतली.

and it allowed me to just play.

त्यामुळे तो खेळ वाटू लागला.

So as an inventor,

एक संशोधक म्हणून,

I'm interested in things that people struggle with.

लोकांना कठीण वाटणाऱ्या गोष्टींमध्ये मला रस वाटतो.

It can be small things or big things or medium-sized things

मग त्या गोष्टी छोट्या असोत, मोठ्या असोत, किंवा अधल्यामधल्या.

and something like giving a TED talk presents this whole new set of problems

that I can solve.

And identifying a problem is the first step in my process

of building a useless machine.

So before I came here,

I sat down and I thought of some of the potential problems I might have

in giving this talk.

Forgetting what to say.

That people won't laugh --

that's you.

Or even worse,

that you'll laugh at the wrong things --

that was an OK part to laugh at,

Or that when I get nervous, my hands start shaking

and I'm really self-conscious about it.

Or that my fly has been open this entire time

and all of you noticed but I didn't,

but it's closed so we're all good on that one.

But one thing I'm actually really nervous about is my hands shaking.

I remember when I was a kid,

I would have my notes on a piece of paper,

And I give a lot of talks.

I know that about half of you in the audience are probably like,

"Building useless machines is really fun,

but how is this in any way or form a business?"

And giving talks is a part of it.

And the arrangers always put out a glass of water for you onstage

so you have something to drink if you get thirsty,

and I always so badly want to drink that water,

मला नेहमीच ते पाणी प्यायची जोरदार इच्छा होते.

but I don't dare to pick the glass up

पण तो पेला उचलायची हिम्मत होत नाही.

because then people might be able to see that my hands are shaking.

लोकांना माझे थरथरणारे हात दिसतील, अशी भीती वाटते.

So what about a machine that hands you a glass of water?

मग, पाण्याचा पेला उचलून देणारं यंत्र बनवलं तर?

Sold to the nervous girl in the googly-eye shirt.

हलणाऱ्या डोळ्यांचा शर्ट घातलेली घाबरट मुलगी ते यंत्र विकत घेईल.

Actually, I need to take this off because I have a thing --

आता हा शर्ट काढते, कारण मला तुम्हांला काहीतरी दाखवायचं आहे.

(Googly eyes rattle)

(डोळ्यांचा खुळखुळ आवाज)

Oh.

ओह

(Clanking)

(खुळखुळ)

(Laughter)

I still don't know what to call this,

but I think some sort of "head orbit device,"

because it rotates this platform around you

and you can put anything on it.

त्यावर आपण काहीही ठेवू शकतो.

You can have a camera; you can get photos of your entire head.

यावर कॅमेरा ठेवला, तर आपल्या संपूर्ण डोक्याची छायाचित्रं मिळतील.

Like it's really -- it's a very versatile machine.

या यंत्राचे अनेक उपयोग आहेत.

OK, and I have --

I mean, you can put some snacks on it, for example,

if you want to.

I have some popcorn here.

And you just put a little bit like that.

there's some sacrifices for science --

Let's do the long way around.

And then you have a little hand.

You need to adjust the height of it,

and you just do it by shrugging.

I just bumped my mic off,

but I think we're all good.

OK, also I need to chew this popcorn,

OK, so it's like your own little personal solar system,

because I'm a millennial,

so I want everything to revolve around me.

Back to the glass of water, that's what we're here for.

it doesn't have any water in it,

I'm sorry.

But I still need to work on this machine a little bit

पण या यंत्रावर मला अजून काम केलं पाहिजे.

because I still need to pick up the glass and put it on the platform,

पेला उचलून कड्यावर ठेवता आला पाहिजे.

but if your hands are shaking a little bit,

आता माझे हात जरासे थरथरले,

nobody's going to notice

तरी ते दिसणार नाहीत.

because you're wearing a very mesmerizing piece of equipment.

कारण या अद्भुत यंत्राने तुम्हांला मंत्रमुग्ध केलं आहे.

So, we're all good.

माझी काळजी मिटली.

OK.

ठीक आहे.

(Robot buzzes)

Oh no, it got stuck.

अरेरे, हे तर अडकलं.

Isn't it comforting that even robots sometimes get stage fright?

या यंत्रालाही कधीकधी व्यासपीठावर भीती वाटते.

It just gets stuck a little bit.

मग ते जरासं अडकतं.

It's very human of them.

अगदी माणसांसारखं.

Oh wait, let's go back a little bit,

थांबा.. थोडं मागे जाऊ.

and then --

आणि मग..

(Glass falls)

Isn't it a beautiful time to be alive?

आजच्या काळात जन्माला येणं किती भाग्याचं आहे.

(Laughter)

So as much as my machines can seem like simple engineering slapstick,

माझी यंत्रं म्हणजे जणु आंगिक विनोदाचा अभियांत्रिकी अवतार.

I realize that I stumbled on something bigger than that.

पण यातून मला काहीतरी महत्त्वाचं सापडलं. आनंद आणि विनम्रपणा.

It's this expression of joy and humility that often gets lost in engineering,

बरेचदा, अभियांत्रिकी जगात या गोष्टी हरवून जातात.

and for me it was a way to learn about hardware

यातून मला हार्डवेअरबद्दल बरंच काही शिकता आलं.

without having my performance anxiety get in the way.

यशाची चिंता आड आली नाही.

I often get asked if I think I'm ever going to build something useful,

मला नेहमी विचारलं जातं, "काहीतरी उपयोगाचं करणार आहेस का कधी?"

and maybe someday I will.

कोण जाणे, करेनही कधीतरी.

But the way I see it,

माझ्या दृष्टीने,

I already have

हेही उपयुक्तच आहे.

because I've built myself this job

कारण हे काम मी स्वतःहून सुरु केलं.

and it's something that I could never have planned for,

योजना आखून करता येणार नाही असं काम आहे हे.

or that I could --

हा व्यवसाय..

(Applause)

It's something that I could never have planned for.

आखणी करून सुरु करता आला नसता.

Instead it happened just because I was enthusiastic about what I was doing,

मी जे काही केलं ते उत्साहाने केलं, म्हणून हे सगळं घडलं.

and I was sharing that enthusiasm with other people.

माझा उत्साह मी इतरांना वाटला.

To me that's the true beauty of making useless things,

मला वाटतं, हेच कुचकामी यंत्रं बनवण्यातलं खरं सौंदर्य.

because it's this acknowledgment

इथे आपण कबुली देतो, की

that you don't always know what the best answer is.

आपल्याला सगळ्या प्रश्नांची उत्तरं ठाऊक नाहीत.

And it turns off that voice in your head

त्यामुळे, आपल्याला जगातलं सगळं ठाऊक आहे,

that tells you that you know exactly how the world works.

असं सांगणारा तो आपल्याच डोक्यातला आवाज गप्प बसतो.

And maybe a toothbrush helmet isn't the answer,

टूथब्रश हेल्मेट हे उत्तर नसेल,

but at least you're asking the question.

पण आपण निदान प्रश्न तरी विचारला!
