My name is Dan, I'm a partner at a global creative consultancy.

As I thought about my double life, I couldn't help but wonder ...

For the first 10 years of my career,

I thought there was one way to be a leader:

decisive and serious.

But that's not me.

So I'd put on basically office drag to fit the role:

لە دەساڵی سەرەتای پیشەکەمدا،

I'd talk in a deeper voice, try to hold in my hand motions.

پێم وابوو یەک ڕێگە هەیە بۆ بوون بە پێشەوا:

I'm someone who gets really excited about things,

ئەویش ڕژدییەتی و بڕیاری دانە.

so I'd temper that.

بەڵام من وانەبووم.

I had this little voice in my head, telling me,

"You're too gay, too feminine, too flamboyant."

قوڵتر قسەم دەکرد، هەوڵم دەدا دەستم بجوڵێنم

I had one well-intentioned adviser who said,

"Everyone knows you're gay. And that's great.

بۆیە، میزاجم دەگۆڕێت.

But you don't need to beat them over the head with it."

Cut to: me in a tutu, for Halloween 2016.

"تۆ زۆر نێربازیت، زۆر ژنانیت، زۆر گاڵتەچیت."

I dressed up as my favorite TV show character, Carrie Bradshaw,

"هەمووان دەزانن تۆ نێربازیت. ئەوەش زۆر باشە.

thinking my friends would get a kick out of it.

بەڵام پێویست ناکات پشانی هەموویانی بدەیت."

And then, things got crazy.

ئەوە منم بە تەنوورەوە، بۆ جەژنی هەڵۆوینی ٢٠١٦.

The post went viral, and at first it was pure fun.

I started getting these incredible messages from people

وەک کاری برادشۆی کەسێتییەکی بەرنامەی تەلەفزیۆن دڵخوازم خۆم گۆڕیبوو

about how happy it made them,

how it encouraged them to be their authentic selves.

وا بیرم دەکردەوە کە هاوڕێکانم بە دڵیان دەبێت.

و دواتر، ئەمە بوو بە شێتی.

And I started to think,

maybe this is the time to tell that little voice in my head to just shut up

ئەمە زۆر بڵاوبووەوە و لەسەرەتادا زۆر خۆش بوو.

نامەی باوەڕ پێنەکراوم لە خەڵکەوە بۆ دەهات

and let myself be me.

لەسەر ئەوەی چۆن دڵخۆشی کردن،

But then things got a little too big.

و چۆن هاندەریان بووم کە سروشتی خۆیان بن.

Carrie Dragshaw was everywhere -- In the "New York Post", "US Weekly" --

دەستم بەبیرکردنەوە کرد،

لەوانەیە کاتی ئەوەبێت بەو دەنگە کزەی ناوسەرم بڵێم کە بێدەنگ بێت و

and I got terrified:

"What would my bosses think?

Would my coworkers still respect me as a leader?

ڕێگە بەخۆم بدەم وەک خۆم بم.

What would my clients think?"

بەڵام دواتر شتەکان کەمێک زیاتر گەورە بوون.

I thought I was going to have to get a different job.

کاری دراگشۆو لە هەموو شوێنێک بوو -- لە "نیۆرک پۆست"، "هەفتانەی یو ئێس" --

But then, something happened, something small.

I got a text from my boss, it wasn't long, it just said,

و منیش زۆر دەترسام:

"دەبێت بەڕێوەبەرەکانم بڵێن چی

"Wow, Cosmo!"

ئایا هاوپیشەکانم هێشتا وەک پێشەوایەک ڕێزم دەگرن؟

With a link to an article that had just gone up about me.

دەبێت کڕیارەکانم چی بڵێن؟"

وا بیرم کردەوە دەبێت کارێکی جیاواز بدۆزمەوە.

And it let me put that little, scared voice away

بەڵام دواتر، شتێک ڕوویدا، شتێکی بچووک.

and just be excited about this whole new world,

لە بەڕێوبەرەکەمەوە نامەیەکم بۆهات، کە درێژ نەبوو، تەنها نووسرابوو،

rather than freaked out.

"واو، کۆسمۆ!"

That's the power of one person,

sometimes all it takes is one ally to make you feel comfortable.

لەگەڵ بەستەری نووسراوێک کە دەربارەی من نووسرابوو.

و وای لێکردم ئەو دەنگە کزە ترسناکە، بەلاوە بنێم

And my coworkers started acting differently.

و تەنها دەربارەی هەموو ئەم جیهانە تازەیەوە دڵخۆش بم،

They became more open, more playful with me,

it was as if knowing this other side of me

لە بری ئەوەی بترسم.

ئەوە هێزی یەک کەسە،

gave them permission to be more of themselves as well.

هەندێک جار هەموو ئەوەی پێویستە، یەک پاڵپشتییە هەتا هەست بە ئاسودەیی بکەیت.

I thought that openness and vulnerability

would actually decrease my standing with my team.

و هاوپیشەکانم جیاواز ڕەفتاریان دەکرد.

لەگەڵم زیاتر کرانەوە، و زیاتر گڵتەیان دەکرد،

But it's done the opposite.

وەک بڵێی ناسینی ئەم دیوەی من

Two years in,

I never could have imagined that this part of me would not just be embraced,

ڕێی پێدان، ئەوانیش زیاتر وەک خۆیان بن.

پێم وابوو، ئەم کراوەییە و هەست ناسکییە

but could actually help my career.

لەگەڵ تیمەکەم، لە کەسایەتیم کەمدەکاتەوە.

Now, I'm lucky.

I work in New York City,

بەڵام پێچەوانەکەی ڕوویدا.

in an office where creativity is valued

بۆ ماوەی دوو ساڵ،

and I was already pretty established in my career when all of this started.

هەرگیز وێنام نەدەکرد کە ئەم لایەنەی من قبووڵبکرێت،

Maybe that's you, maybe it isn't.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا زۆر یارمەتی پیشەکەی دام.

But all of this has taught me so much

ئێستا، من بەبەختم.

about just the importance of bringing your whole self to work.

لە "نیو یۆرک سیتی" کاردەکەم،

And it's really challenged my own misperceptions

about what it takes to be successful.

There's no one kind of way to be a leader.

بەڵام هەموو ئەمانە زۆر شتیان فێرکردووم

It's about finding your strengths and finding ways to amplify them.

دەربارەی گرنگی ئامەدەبوونت لەسەر کار بە تەواوی خۆتەوە.

Before, if a meeting was hard, I'd put on my perfect leader mask.

و بەڕاستی ئەمە بەرەنگاری بیرکردنەوەکانم بووەوە

دەربارەی، چی پێویستە، تا سەرکەوتووبیت.

Now, I can say, "Gosh, that was frustrating."

We can talk about challenges and struggles in an open way,

rather than everybody pretending that they're fine until it's too late.

Concealing an identity takes work.

Think of all the wasted energy spent pretending,

wishing you were someone different.

What's most interesting to me, though, is that in this big study of covering,

93 percent of those who say they're doing it

also believe their organization values inclusion.

So clearly, our workplaces and all of our strange inner voices

have a long way to go on acceptance.

There's a big difference between adapting and disguising.

And I think I learned that a little late.

کەواتە بەڕوونی، شوێنی کارەکانمان و هەموو دەنگە نامۆکانی ناخمان

Personally, I'm taking all of this as a call to be the ally

ڕێگەیەکی درێژیان لە پێشە تا قبووڵ بکرێن.

who, like my boss did for me,

lets people know that it's OK to open up.

جیاوازییەکی گەورە لە نێوان گونجان و نواندندا هەیە.

If you're gay, or proud of your ethnic background,

پێم وایە کەمێک درەنگ فێری بووم.

or have a disability or are deeply religious,

وەک خۆم، من هەموو ئەوانە وەک بانگ کردنێک بۆ بوون بە پاڵپشت دەبینم

see what it's like being your full self at work.

بەجۆرەی بەڕێوبەرەکەم بۆ منی کرد.

You might be pleasantly surprised.

با بەخەڵک بڵێین، کە ئاساییە کراوەبیت.

گەر تۆ هاوڕەزخوازی، یان شانازی دەکەیت بە نەژادی خۆتەوە،

یان بێتواناییەکت هەیە یا ئاینێکی دەگمەنت هەیە،

ببینە لەچی ئەچێت کاتێک بەتەواوی خۆتی لەسەر کار.
