For some of us is authenticity off-limits?

제 이중생활을 생각하면서 이런 점이 궁금했어요.

For the first 10 years of my career,

자신의 진정한 모습이 평범함과 약간 거리가 있다면

I thought there was one way to be a leader:

어느 정도를 직장생활에서 보일 수 있을까요?

decisive and serious.

But that's not me.

자기의 진짜 모습을 숨겨야 할까요?

So I'd put on basically office drag to fit the role:

사회 생활을 시작하고 처음 10년 동안은

I'd talk in a deeper voice, try to hold in my hand motions.

리더에게 필요한 자질이 있다고 믿었습니다.

I'm someone who gets really excited about things,

결단력과 진지함이죠.

so I'd temper that.

하지만 전 아니었죠.

I had this little voice in my head, telling me,

그래서 매일 억지로 이상적인 모습을 꾸며냈어요.

"You're too gay, too feminine, too flamboyant."

더 낮은 목소리로 대화하고 손동작도 자제했죠.

I had one well-intentioned adviser who said,

사실 전 꽤 호들갑 떠는 사람이지만

"Everyone knows you're gay. And that's great.

꾹 눌러 참았습니다.

But you don't need to beat them over the head with it."

제 머릿속에선 이런 말이 들렸죠.

Cut to: me in a tutu, for Halloween 2016.

"넌 너무 게이 같고 여성스러워, 너무 화려하다고."

그런데 제게 호의적인 고문께서 이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

I dressed up as my favorite TV show character, Carrie Bradshaw,

"모두가 당신이 게이인 걸 알아요. 그래도 괜찮아요!

thinking my friends would get a kick out of it.

그런 걸로 머리 싸매고 고민할 필요 없어요."

And then, things got crazy.

화제를 돌려서, 2016년 할로윈에 발레복을 입은 저예요.

The post went viral, and at first it was pure fun.

I started getting these incredible messages from people

좋아하는 드라마 주인공인 캐리 브래드쇼로 분장했죠.

about how happy it made them,

how it encouraged them to be their authentic selves.

친구들이나 재밌어할 줄 알았어요.

그런데 예상 밖의 상황이 벌어졌어요.

And I started to think,

maybe this is the time to tell that little voice in my head to just shut up

사진이 유명해진 거죠. 처음엔 단순 재밋거리였어요.

그러다 사람들에게서 메시지를 받기 시작했죠.

and let myself be me.

제 사진을 보고 정말 반가웠고

But then things got a little too big.

자기 본연의 모습을 드러내는 데 큰 용기를 얻었다면서요.

Carrie Dragshaw was everywhere -- In the "New York Post", "US Weekly" --

그래서 전 생각해봤습니다.

어쩌면 지금이야말로 내 머릿속의 속삭임을 잠재우고

and I got terrified:

"What would my bosses think?

Would my coworkers still respect me as a leader?

진짜 내가 될 시간이라고요.

What would my clients think?"

근데 일이 너무 커져 버렸어요.

I thought I was going to have to get a different job.

캐리 드래그쇼가 "뉴욕 포스트", "US 위클리" 에 퍼진거죠.

But then, something happened, something small.

I got a text from my boss, it wasn't long, it just said,

전 겁이 났죠.

"상사가 어떻게 생각할까?

"Wow, Cosmo!"

직원들은 아직 날 리더로 존경할까?

With a link to an article that had just gone up about me.

고객들은 어떻고?"

다른 직업을 찾아야 할지도 모른다고 생각했죠.

And it let me put that little, scared voice away

그러던 그때 작은 일이 생겼어요.

and just be excited about this whole new world,

직장 상사에게 짧은 문자를 받았죠.

rather than freaked out.

"우와! 코스모폴리탄 잡지에도!"

That's the power of one person,

sometimes all it takes is one ally to make you feel comfortable.

그러면서 제 이야기가 실린 기사의 링크도 보내더군요.

이 일로 전 머릿속 목소리를 완전히 떨쳐내고

And my coworkers started acting differently.

완전히 새로운 세상을 즐기기 시작했어요.

They became more open, more playful with me,

it was as if knowing this other side of me

더는 겁내지 않았죠.

그건 고작 한 사람의 힘이었어요.

gave them permission to be more of themselves as well.

때론 단 한 명의 내 편이 가장 든든한 법이죠.

I thought that openness and vulnerability

would actually decrease my standing with my team.

그리고 직장동료들도 달라졌어요.

전보다 더 친근하게 다가와 장난도 쳤죠.

But it's done the opposite.

저의 또 다른 모습을 알게 되자

Two years in,

I never could have imagined that this part of me would not just be embraced,

그들도 거리낌 없이 자기 본연의 모습을 보일 수 있게 된 거죠.

이렇게 약점을 드러내면

but could actually help my career.

동료들과 거리가 생길 거라고 생각했지만

Now, I'm lucky.

I work in New York City,

정반대로 더 좋아졌어요.

in an office where creativity is valued

2년 전만 해도

and I was already pretty established in my career when all of this started.

제 이런 부분이 받아들여질 거라곤 상상도 못 했는데

Maybe that's you, maybe it isn't.

실제론 직장생활에 도움이 된다니요.

But all of this has taught me so much

전 복 받았죠.

about just the importance of bringing your whole self to work.

전 뉴욕에서 일합니다.

창의성을 높이 평가하는 직장에서

이미 어느 정도 기반을 잡아둔 상태였죠.

And it's really challenged my own misperceptions

about what it takes to be successful.

여러분도 그럴 수도 있고, 아닐 수도 있어요.

There's no one kind of way to be a leader.

그렇지만 이 모든 걸 통해 제가 깨달은 건

It's about finding your strengths and finding ways to amplify them.

온전한 자신으로 일하는 게 정말 중요하다는 사실이에요.

Before, if a meeting was hard, I'd put on my perfect leader mask.

저 스스로 오해했던 것도 문제였어요.

성공을 위한 자질에 대해서 말이죠.

Now, I can say, "Gosh, that was frustrating."

리더가 되기 위한 공식은 없어요.

We can talk about challenges and struggles in an open way,

자신의 강점을 찾고 더 크게 발전하면 됩니다.

rather than everybody pretending that they're fine until it's too late.

예전 같으면, 회의가 힘들면 전 완벽한 리더의 가면을 썼겠지만

Concealing an identity takes work.

지금은 "정말 짜증나네."라고 말해버립니다.

Think of all the wasted energy spent pretending,

이젠 어렵고 힘든 상황을 서로 편하게 말할 수 있게 됐어요.

wishing you were someone different.

What's most interesting to me, though, is that in this big study of covering,

괜찮은 척 하다가 더 망치는 것보단 낫죠.

정체성을 숨기는 건 일에 지장을 줍니다.

93 percent of those who say they're doing it

also believe their organization values inclusion.

자신의 모습을 꾸미느라 낭비하는 에너지를 생각해보세요.

남다른 척하면서 말이죠.

So clearly, our workplaces and all of our strange inner voices

흥미롭게도 어느 연구조사에서 자신을 감추는지 묻는 질문에

have a long way to go on acceptance.

93%의 사람들이 그렇다고 답했습니다.

There's a big difference between adapting and disguising.

조직에 포함되는 것이 중요하다고 생각해서죠.

And I think I learned that a little late.

직장과 머릿속 이상한 목소리가 우리를 받아들이기에

Personally, I'm taking all of this as a call to be the ally

아직 갈 길이 멀다는 뜻입니다.

who, like my boss did for me,

lets people know that it's OK to open up.

상황에 맞춰 조정하는 것과 아예 위장하는 건 매우 다릅니다.

If you're gay, or proud of your ethnic background,

전 그걸 늦게 깨달았어요.

or have a disability or are deeply religious,

저는 이 모든 걸 내 편 만들기라고 생각합니다.

see what it's like being your full self at work.

제 상사가 그렇게 해줬듯이

You might be pleasantly surprised.

사람들에게 드러내도 괜찮다고 말해주고 싶네요.

여러분이 게이이든 민족적 배경이 있든

장애가 있거나 신실한 종교인이든

온전한 자신으로 일하는 게 어떤지 느껴보세요.

아마 너무 좋아서 놀랄 거예요.
