Some of you have heard the story before,

هەندێکتان پێشتر ئەم چیرۆکەتان بیستووە

but, in fact, there's somebody in the audience

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا کەسێک هەیە لە ئامادە بووان

who's never heard this story in front of an audience before,

کە قەد ئەم چیرۆکەی نەبیستووە ...لەبەردەم ئامادەبویەکدا..پێشتر

من تۆزێک شڵەژاوم زیاتر لە کاتەکانی تر کاتێک ئەم چیرۆکە دەگێڕمەوە

so I'm a little more nervous than I normally am telling this story.

I used to be a photographer for many years.

بۆ چەند ساڵێکی زۆر من وێنەگر بووم

In 1978, I was working for "TIME Magazine"

لە ساڵی ١٩٧٨ من بۆ گۆڤاری (تایم) کارم دەکرد

and I was given a three-day assignment to photograph Amerasian children,

وە لاوێ سێ ڕۆژ ئیشم هەبوو

بۆ وێنەگرتنی منداڵانی ئەمریکی-ئاسیایی

children who had been fathered by American GIs all over Southeast Asia,

ئەم منداڵانەی کە لەلایەن (GI)ی ئەمریکی بەخێو دەکران

لە هەموو باشوری خۆرهەڵاتی ئاسیا وە دوای

and then abandoned -- 40,000 children all over Asia.

٤٠،٠٠٠ منداڵیان لە هەموو ئاسیا پشت گوێ خست

I had never heard the word Amerasian before.

من پێشتر وشەی ئەمریکی-ئاسیایم نەبینیوە

I spent a few days photographing children in different countries,

چەند ڕۆژێکم بەسەر برد لە وێنەگرتنی منداڵان لە چەندین وڵاتی جیاواز

and like a lot of photographers and a lot of journalists,

وە وەک هەموو وێنەگرێک ڕۆژنامەنوسێک

I always hoped that when my pictures are published,

هەمیشە هیوام دەخواست وێنەکانم بڵاو بکرێتەوە

و لەوانەیە بەو کارە کاریگەریەک لەسەر دۆخەکە دروست بکات

they might actually have an effect on a situation,

instead of just documenting it.

So, I was so disturbed by what I saw

and I was so unhappy with the article that ran afterwards,

that I decided I would take six months off.

I was 28 years old.

I decided I would find six children in different countries,

بڕیارم دا کا شەش منداڵ لە وڵاتی جیاوەزەوە بدۆزمەوە

وە هەندێ کاتیان لەگەڵ بەسەر بەرم

and actually go spend some time with the kids,

وە هەوڵ بدەم چیرۆکەکانیان بەشیوەیەکی باشتر بگێڕمەوە

and try to tell their story a little bit better

وەل لەوەی بیرم کردبێتەوە و کردبێتم بۆ گۆڤاری ، تایم

than I thought I had done for Time magazine.

مەبەستم لەم چیرۆکە

In the course of doing the story,

I was looking for children who hadn't been photographed before,

گەڕان بوون بەدوی ئەو مندالانەی کە پێشتر وێنە نەگیرابوون

and the Pearl Buck Foundation told me that they worked with a lot of Americans

وە دەزگای (پێڕڵ بەک) پێیان ووتم

کە کاریان لەگەڵ زۆربەی ئەو ئەمریکیانە کردووە کە

who were donating money to help some of these kids.

پارە کۆدەکەنەوە بۆ یارمەتی دانی ئەو منداڵانە

And a man told me,

وە پیاوێک پێی وتم ئەو کەسەی کە دەزگای (پێڕڵ بەک) ی بەڕێوە دەبرد لە کۆریا

who ran the Pearl Buck Foundation in Korea,

that there was a young girl, who was 11 years old,

کە کچێکی گەنج هەبوو، تەمەنی (١١) ساڵ بوو لەلایەن داپیرەیەوە بەخێو کرابوو

being raised by her grandmother.

وە داپیری بەهیچ شێوەیەک نەیدەهێشت ڕپژئاواییەکان بیبینن

And the grandmother had never let any Westerners see her.

Every time any Westerners came to the village, she hid the girl.

هەر کاتێک ڕۆژئاواییەکان دەهاتن بۆ گوندەکە ، ئەو کچەی دەشاردەوە

Of course, I was immediately intrigued.

بەدڵنیایەوە من بەخێرایی کەوتمە داوەکەوە

I saw photographs of her and I thought I wanted to go.

من وێنەی ئەو کچەم بینی پێم وابوو بڕۆم باشترە

And the guy just told me,

پیاویک پێی وتم ، هیچ ڕێگەیەک نیە دەزانی ئەم داپیرە ناهێڵێت

"This grandmother -- there's no way she's ever going to let you

هیچ ڕیگەیەک نیە ئەو بهێڵێت ئەو کچە ببینیت کە ئەو گەورەی کردووە

meet this girl that's she's raising."

لەگەڵ خۆمدا وەرگێڕێکم بردوو چوین بۆ ئەو گوندە

I took a translator with me and went to this village,

کچەکەو داپیرەکەیمان بینی بەیەکەوە دانیشتبوون

found the grandmother, sat down with her.

بۆ من باوەڕ پێنەکراو بوو کاتێک ئەو ڕێگەی پێدام

And to my astonishment, she agreed to let me photograph her granddaughter.

وێنەی کچەزاکەی بگرم

And I was paying for this myself, so I asked the translator

لەگەڵ خۆمدا لە گفتوگۆدا بووم،بۆیە پرسیارم لە وەرگێڕەکە کرد

if it would be OK if I stayed for the week.

کە ئاسایی دەبێت ئەگەر بۆ هەفتەیەک بمێنمەوە

I had a sleeping bag.

من کیسەی خەوم پێبوو

The family had a small shed on the side of the house,

ئەو خێزانە شوێنێکی بچوکیان هەبوو لەلایەکی خانووەکەیانەوە

so I said, "Could I sleep in my sleeping bag in the evenings?"

بۆیە وتم ،دەتوانم لەناو کیسەی خەوەکەمدا بخەوم لە شەواندا؟

And I just told the little girl, whose name was Eun-Sook Lee,

وە ئێستا بە کچە بچووکەکەم وت کە ناوی (هیون سوک لی ) بوو

that if I ever did anything to embarrass her --

کە ئەگەر هەر شتێکم کرد کە ئەو بێزار بکات

she didn't speak a word of English, although she looked very American --

ئەو کچە یەک ووشە بە ئینگلیزی قسەی نەکرد ،لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا زۆر لە ئەمریکی ئەچوو

دەتوانێت دەست بەرز بکاتەوەو بڵێ بوەستە

she could put up her hand and say, "Stop," and I would stop taking pictures.

وە من لە وێنەگرتن دوەوەستن

دوای ئەوە وەرگێڕەکەم ڕۆیشت

Then my translator left. I couldn't speak a word of Korean.

شتێک هەبوو ، وە نەمدەتوانی یەک وشەی کۆری بڵێم

وە ئەوە یەکەم شەو بوو کە (هیون سوک)م بینی

This is the first night I met Eun-Sook.

هێشتا دایکی زیندوو بوو

Her mother was still alive.

She was not raising her, her grandmother was raising her.

دیکی بەخێوی نەدەکرد،بەڵکو داپیری بەخێوی دەکرد

وە ئەوەی کە من وەرم نەدەگرت ئەوە بوو

And what struck me immediately

was how in love the two of these people were.

چۆن ئەو دوو کەسە یەکتریان خۆشدەوێت

The grandmother was incredibly fond, deeply in love with this little girl.

ئەو داپیرەیە زۆر ئەو کچە بجووکەی خۆشی دەویست و خولیای ئەو بوو

شەوانە لەسەر زەوی دەخەوت

They slept on the floor at night.

The way they heat their homes in Korea is to put bricks under the floors,

ئەو ڕێگەیەی کە کۆرتەکان ماڵیان گەرم دەکرد بەوە بوو کە خشتیان دەخستە ژێر زەویەکەوە

بۆیە گەرمیەکە ڕاستەوخۆ لەژێر زەویەکەوە دەهاتە سەرەوە

so the heat radiates from underneath the floor.

هیون سوک تەمەنی (١١)ساڵ بوو

Eun-Sook was 11 years old.

I had photographed, as I said, a lot of these kids.

وەک وتم ، وێنەی زۆر ئەو منداڵانەم گرتووە

لە ڕاستیدا ،هیون سوک پێنجەم منداڵ کە دۆزیمەوە بۆ وێنەگرتن

Eun-Sook was the fifth child that I found to photograph.

And almost universally, amongst all the kids,

وە لە نزیکی هەموو جیهاندا ،زۆربەی زۆری ئەو منداڵانە

they were really psychologically damaged

بەشێوەیەکی دەروونی ئەمانە تێکشکاوبوون لەلایەن

by having been made fun of, ridiculed, picked on and been rejected.

بە گاڵتە پێکردنیان سەرزەنشت کردنیان و ڕەتکردنەوەیان

And Korea was probably the place I found to be the worst for these kids.

لەوانەیە کۆریا ئەو شوێنە نەبێت کە پیم زانیبێت

ببێت بە خراپترین شوێن بۆ ئەم منداڵانە

And what struck me immediately in meeting Eun-Sook

ئەوەی کە توشی سەرسوڕمانی کردم لە چاوپێکەوتنەکەی هیون سوک دا

was how confident she appeared to be,

ئەوە کە تا چەند ئەو باوەڕی بەخۆی هەبوو

how happy she seemed to be in her own skin.

تا چەند ئەو دڵی خۆش بوو لەناو پێستەکەیدا

And remember this picture,

ئەم وێنەیەتان لەبیر بێت

because I'm going to show you another picture later.

چونکە دوایی من وێنەیەکی ترتان پشان دەدەم

بەلام ئەو دەبینن کە تا چەند ئەو کچە لە داپیری دەچێت

She looks much like her grandmother, although she looks so Western.

لەگەڵ ئەوەی لە کەسێکی ڕۆژئاوایش ئەچێت

I decided to follow her to school.

بڕیارم دا بەدوایدا بڕۆم بۆ قوتابخانەکەی

ئەوە یەکەم بەیانی بوو کە لەگەڵ ئەو بووم

This is the first morning I stayed with her.

ئەم لە رێگەی قوتابخانە یە

This is on the way to school.

This is the morning assembly outside her school.

ئەم کۆبونەوەی بەیانیانە لەدەرەوەی قوتابخانەکەی

And I noticed that she was clowning around.

تێبینیم کرد کە لەو ناوەدا خەریکی گاڵتە کردن بوو

When the teachers would ask questions,

کاتێک مامۆستاکان پرسیاریان دەکەن

she'd be the first person to raise her hand.

ئەو کچە یەکەم کەس بوو کە دەستی بەرز دەکردەوە

Again, not at all shy or withdrawn,

دوبارە ، هیچ شەرم یان دوورەپەرێزی

or anything like the other children that I'd photographed.

یان هەر شتێکی وەک ئەو منداڵانەی کە پێشتر وێنەم گرتبوون،نەیبوو

The first one to go to the blackboard to answer questions.

دوبارە، یەکەم کەس بوو کە دەچووە سەر تەختە بۆ وەڵام دانەوەی پرسیارەکان

کێشە توشبوون لە چرپاندن بە گوێی باشترین هاوڕێی

Getting in trouble for whispering into her best friend's ears.

لە ناوەڕاستی وانەکاندا

And one of the other things I said to her through the translator --

شتێکی تر کەم پێم وت لەڕێگەی وەرگێڕەکەمەوە

دوبارە لەبارەی وتنی بۆستە ... ئەوە بوو کە گوێی بە من نەئەدا

again, this thing about saying stop -- was to not pay attention to me.

So she really just completely ignored me most of the time.

زۆربەی کاتەکان ئەو منی پشت گوێ خسبوو

I noticed that at recess,

تێبینیم کردبوو لە کاتی یاریەکاندا،ئەو ئەو کچە بوو

she was the girl who picked the other girls to be on her team.

کە کچەکانی تری هەڵدەبژارد بۆ ئەوەی بێنە تیمەکەیەوە

It was very obvious, from the beginning, that she was a leader.

هەر لە سەرەتاوە زۆر ڕون بوو کە ئەو کچە سەرکردە بوو

ئەمە لە ڕێگای ماڵەوەیە

This is on the way home. And that's North Korea up along the hill.

ئەمە ڕێگای کۆریای باکورە، بەرەو گردەکە

ئەمە بەرەو سەرەوەی (DMZ)

This is up along the DMZ.

They would actually cover the windows every night,

لە ڕاستیدا،ئەوان هەموو شەوێک پەنجەرەکانیان دادەپۆشن بۆ ئەوەی ڕوناکی نەبینرێت

so that light couldn't be seen,

چونکە حکومەتی کۆریای باشور بۆ چەندین ساڵ دەیانووت

because the South Korean government has said for years

that the North Koreans may invade at any time.

کا کۆریای باکور هەر کاتێک بێت داگیر بکات

لەبەر ئەوە هەموو کاتێک بەم شێوەیە بوو ... هەتا نزیکتر بێت لە کۆریای باکور

So the closer you were to North Korea, the more terrifying it was.

Very often at school, I'd be taking pictures,

زۆربەی کات لە قوتابخانە وێنەم دەگرت

and she would whisper into her girlfriends' ears,

وە بەگوێی هاوڕێ کچەکانیدا دەیچرپاند

and then look at me and say, "Stop."

وە دوایی تەماشای منی دەکردوو دەیوت بۆستە

And I would stand at attention, and all the girls would crack up,

وە من وەک سەرنج دانێک هەڵدەستام و هەموو کچەکان ڕادەچڵەکین

وە ئەوەش وەک یاریەک وابوو

and it was sort of a little joke.

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

The end of the week came and my translator came back,

کۆتایی هەفتە نزیک بۆوەو وەرگێڕەکەم گەڕایەوە

چونکە من داوام لێکردبوو کە بگەڕێتەوە

because I'd asked her to come back,

هەتا بەڕەسمی سوپاسی داپیرەکەو هیون سوک بکەم

so I could formally thank the grandmother and Eun-Sook.

And in the course of the grandmother talking to the translator,

لەکاتی قسەکردنی داپیرەکە لەگەڵ وەرگێڕەکەم

داپیرەکە دەستی کرد بەگریان

the grandmother started crying.

من بە وەرگێڕەکەم وت ،ئەوە چی ڕوئەدات؟ بۆچی ئەوە دەگری؟

And I said to my translator, "What's going on, why is she crying?"

وە وەرگێڕەکەم کەمێک قسەی لەگەڵ داپیرەکە کرد

And she spoke to the grandmother for a moment,

وە دوبارە ئەو دەستی کردەوە بەگریان

and then she started getting tears in her eyes.

وە منیس وتم :باشە من چیم کردووە؟ چی ڕویداوە؟

And I said, "What did I do? Why is everyone crying?"

بۆچی هەمووتان دەگرین

And the translator said,

وە وەرگێڕەکە وتی :داپیرەکە دەڵێت

"The grandmother says that she thinks she's dying,

کە ئەو هەست دەکات دەمرێت

and she wants to know if you would take Eun-Sook to America with you."

وە ئەو دەیەوێت بزانێت ئەگەر تۆ هیون سوک لەگەل خۆت ببەیت بۆ ئەمریکا؟

And I said, "I'm 28 years old and I live in hotels,

منیس وتم من ٢٨ ساڵم و لە ئوتێل دەژیم

وە خێزانم نیە

and I'm not married."

I mean, I had fallen in love with this girl,

مەبەستم ،من لەگەل کچێک خۆشەویستیم هەبوو

but you know, emotionally I was about 12 years old.

بەڵام من ... دەزانی وەک ئەوە وابوو ، من تەمەنم (١٢)ساڵ بوو

If you know of photographers,

ئەگەر لەبارەی وێنەگرانەوە بزانن ،نوکتەکە ئەوەیە

the joke is it's the finest form of delayed adolescence ever invented.

ئەوە خۆشترین فۆرمە لە دواخسنتی گەنجێتیدا کە ڕوویدابێت

ببورە،دەبێت بڕۆم ئیشێک بکەم ... دەگەڕێمەوە

"Sorry, I have to go on an assignment, I'll be back" --

وە دواییش هەر نەگەڕایتەوە

and then you never come back.

بۆیە پرسیارم لە وەرگێڕەکە کرد کە پێی بڵێ بۆچی هەست دەکەیت دەمریت؟

So I asked the translator why she thought she was dying.

Can I get her to a hospital? Could I pay to get her a doctor?

دەتوانم بتگەیەنمە نەخۆشخانە ؟دەتوانم پارەی تۆ بدەم و دکتۆرێک بهێنم؟

ئەو هەموو یارمەتیەکی ڕەت دەکردەوە

And she refused any help at all.

لەبەر ئەوە کاتێک چوومە دەرەوە

So when I got outside, I gave the translator some money and said,

هەندێک پارەم دا بە وەرگێڕەکەو وتم

"Go back and see if you can do something."

تکایە بگەڕێوەو بزانە شتێک ناکەیت

And I gave the grandmother my business card.

من کارتی بازرگانیم دا بە داپیرەکە

And I said, "If you're serious, I will try to find a family for her."

وتم ،ئەگەر تۆ بەڕاست قسە دەکەیت ،من خێزانێکی بۆ دەدۆزمەوە

وە بەخێرایی نامەیەکم بۆ بۆ هاوڕێ نزیکەکانم نووسی

And I immediately wrote a letter to my best friends in Atlanta, Georgia,

لا ئەتلەنتا،جۆرجیا. کە کۆڕێکی (١١)ساڵی هەبوو

who had an 11-year-old son.

ڕۆژێکیان بەهەڵە هاووڕێکەم

And my best friend had mistakenly one day said something

وتی کە دەیەوێت منداڵێکی تری هەبێت

about wishing he had another child.

So my friends Gene and Gayle had not heard from me in about a year,

ئەوەتا هاوڕێکانم (جین و گایل)بۆ ماوەی ساڵێکە هیچ شتێکیان لە منەوە نەبیستووە

and suddenly I was calling,

لەناکاودا من تەلەفون دەکەم و دەڵێم .. من لە کۆریام

saying "I'm in Korea and I've met this extraordinary girl."

وە ئەو کچە نایابەم بینیوە

And I said, "The grandmother thinks she's sick,

وە وتم "داپیرەی باوەڕی وایە کە نەخۆشە

but I think maybe we would have to bring the grandmother over also."

بەڵام ،وابزانم لەوانەیە داپیرەکەشی بهێنن

And I said, "I'll pay for the ... " I mean, I had this whole sort of picture.

وتم ،من پارەی ... مەبەستم ، ئەو هەموو خەیاڵەم لە خەیاڵدا بوو

So anyway, I left.

هەرچۆنێک بێت من ڕۆشتم

And my friends actually said they were very interested in adopting her.

هاوڕێکانی وتیان زۆر خۆشحاڵ دەبن بە بەخێوکردنی ئەو کچە

And I said, "Look, I think I'll scare the grandmother to death,

وتم ،بزانە ، وابزانم من داپیرەکە با مردن دەترسێنم

ئەگەر بەڕاستی من بۆی بنوسم و پێی بڵێم

if I tell her that you're willing to adopt her.

کە ئێوە دەتانەوێت ئەو کچە بەخیو بکەن ،دەمەوێت بڕۆمەوە قسەی لەگەڵ بکەم

I want to go back and talk to her." But I was off on assignment.

بەڵام من ئیشم نەمابوو

بریارمدا ،دوای چەند هەفتەیەک دەگەڕێمەوەو قسە لەگەڵ داپیرەکە دەکەم

I figured I'd come back in a couple of weeks

and talk to the grandmother.

وە لە ڕۆژی سەری ساڵدا

And on Christmas Day, I was in Bangkok with a group of photographers

من لەگەڵ چەند وێنەگرێکدا لە بانکۆک بووم

and got a telegram -- back in those days, you got telegrams --

تیلیگرامێکم پێ گەیشت ... لەو رۆژەدا ،تێلێگرامت پێدەگەیشت

from Time magazine saying someone in Korea had died

لە گۆڤاری (تایم)دایان وت کەسێک لە کۆریا مردووە

وە من داڵەکەی بۆ من بەجێهێستووە

and left their child in a will to me.

Did I know anything about this?

ئایا من هیچ شتێکم دەزانی لەبارەی ئەوەوە؟

Because I hadn't told them what I was doing,

لەبەر ئەوەی ئەوەم پێ نەوتبوون کە خەریکی بووم

because I was so upset with the story they'd run.

چونکە من زۆر بێتاقەت بوون لەو چیرۆکەی کە ئەوان لێی هەڵدێن

So, I went back to Korea, and I went back to Eun-Sook's village,

لەبەر ئەوە ،گەڕامەوە بۆ کۆریا، وە چومەوە بۆ گوندەکەی هیۆن سوک

وە ئەو دیار نەمابوو

and she was gone.

And the house that I had spent time in was empty.

ئەو خانوەی کە تیایدا مامەوە چۆڵ بوو

زۆر سارد بوو

It was incredibly cold.

No one in the village would tell me where Eun-Sook was,

هیچ کەس لە گوندەکە پێی نەوتم کە هیون سوک لە کوێیە

جونکە داپیرەی هەمیشە لە ڕۆژئاواییەکانی دەشاردەوە

because the grandmother had always hidden her from Westerners.

وە هیچ زانیاریەکیان نەبوو لەسەر ئەو داوایەی ئەو بۆ منی ناردبوو

And they had no idea about this request that she'd made of me.

لە کۆتاییدا (میۆنگ سۆنگ)م دۆزییەوە

So I finally found Myung Sung,

her best friend that she used to play with after school every day.

هاوڕێ خۆشەویستەکەی ئەو کە هەمیشە دوای قوتابخانە یاری لەگەڵ دەکرد

بەهۆی هەندێ کاریگەری من و وەرگێڕەکەم ، میۆنگ سۆنگ

And Myung Sung, under some pressure from me and the translator,

gave us an address on the outside of Seoul.

ناونیشانێکی پێداین کە لەدەرەوەی سیئۆل بوو

And I went to that address and knocked on the door,

من چووم بۆ ئەو ناونیشانەو لە دەرگاکەمدا

پیاویک وەڵامی دایەوە

and a man answered the door.

It was not a very nice area of Seoul, there were mud streets outside of it.

ئەوە ناوچەیەکی باش و خۆس نەبوو لە سیئۆل

چونکە شەقامی خۆڵی لێ بوو

And I knocked on the door and Eun-Sook answered the door,

لە دەرگاکەم دایەوە هیون سوک وەڵامی دایەوە

and her eyes were bloodshot, and she seemed to be in shock.

وە چاوەکانی سور بووبوون وەک ئەوە وابوو کە توشی شۆک بوبێت

She didn't recognize me -- there was no recognition whatsoever.

ئەو منی نەناسییەوە ...هیچ شتێکی ناسراوی نەبوو

And this man came to the door and kind of barked something in Korean.

وە ئەو پیاوە هاتە لای دەرگاکە و قسەیەکی بە کۆری کرد

منیش بە وەرگێڕەکەم وت "ئەوە وتی چی ؟

And I said to the translator, "What did he say?"

And she said, "He wants to know who you are."

وەرگێڕەکە وتی " ئەو دەیەوێت بزانێت کە تۆ کێیت؟

وتم باشە پێی بڵێ کە من وێنەگرم

And I said, "Tell him that I am a photographer."

دەستم کرد بە خۆ ناساندنی خۆم و ئەویش وەریدەگێڕا

I started explaining who I was, and he interrupted.

And she said, "He says he knows who you are, what do you want?"

وەرگێڕەکە وتی ئەو دەزانێت تۆ کێیت، چیت دەوێت؟

I said, "Well, tell him that I was asked by this little girl's grandmother

وتم ،باشە ، پێی بڵێ کە داوام لێکراوە

لەلایەن داپیری ئەو کچە بچووکەوە کە خێزانێکی بۆ بدۆزمەوە

to find a family for her."

And he said, "I'm her uncle, she's fine, you can leave now."

ئەو وتی من خاڵی ئەوم ،ئەو باشە ،دەتوانیت ئێستا بڕۆیت

So I was --

دەزانی ، من ویستم .... دەرگاکە بەڕوی مندا داخرا

The door was being slammed in my face,

it's incredibly cold, and I'm trying to think,

So I said, "It's really cold, I've come a very long way,

So the guy reluctantly let us in and we sat down on the floor.

And I had this whole mental picture of -- sort of like Cinderella.

And so I went to the hotel, and I found two older Amerasians.

A girl whose mother had been a prostitute,

and she was a prostitute,

and a boy who'd been in and out of jail.

وە کوڕێک کە لە بەندیخانە بوو ،ئازاد بووبوو

And I said to them, "Look, there's a little girl

who has a tiny chance of getting out of here

and going to America.

I don't know if it's the right decision or not,

So, these two came to lunch and we got thrown out of the restaurant.

We went outside, and he was just furious.

And I knew I had totally blown this thing.

Here I was again, trying to figure out what to do.

And he started yelling at me, and I said to the translator,

So, everyone told me afterwards that inviting the prospective parents over

was, again, the stupidest thing I could have possibly done,

But he invited me to come to a ceremony they were having that day

And they actually take items of clothing and photographs,

And you can see how different she looks just in three months.

This was now, I think, early February.

And the pictures before were taken in September.

Well, there was an American Maryknoll priest

قەشەیەکی مارینی ئەمریکی لەوێ بوو کە من بینیم

that I had met in the course of doing the story,

who had 75 children living in his house.

He had three women helping him take care of these kids.

And so I suggested to the uncle that we go down and meet Father Keane

to find out how the adoption process worked.

Because I wanted him to feel

Now, I had always thought she was completely untouched by all of this,

And I always had this mental picture

that even though they may have been one of the poorer families in the village,

they were one of the most respected.

And I always felt that the grandmother had kind of demanded, and insisted,

that the villagers treat Eun-Sook with the same respect they treated her.

Eun-Sook stayed at Father Keane's,

and her uncle agreed to let her stay there until the adoption went through.

He actually agreed to the adoption.

And I went off on assignment and came back a week later,

and Father Keane said, "I've got to talk to you about Eun-Sook."

Three adults and 75 kids -- you can imagine.

And he said, "The second day she was here she made up a list

ووتی "ڕۆژی دووەم کە ئەو کچە لێرە بوو لیستێکی دروست کردووە

of all of the names of the older kids and the younger kids.

بۆ هەموو منداڵە بەتەمەنەکان و منداڵە بچووکەکان

And she assigned one of the older kids to each of the younger kids.

وە ئەو کچە هەر منداڵێکی گەورەی داناوە وەک چاودێر بەسەر هەر منداڵێکی بچووکەوە

And then she set up a work detail list of who cleaned the orphanage on what day."

بۆ هەر کەسێک کە هاتیوخانەکە پاک دەکاتەوە و ڕۆژەکەشی داناوە

And he said, "She's telling me that I'm messy

ئەو وتی" ئەو کچە پێم دەڵێت کە من پیس و چەپەڵم و دەبێت ژورەکەی خۆم پاک بکەمەوە

and I have to clean up my room."

من نازانم کێ ئەوەی گەورە کردووە

And he said, "I don't know who raised her, but she's running the orphanage,

بەڵام ، ئەو وتی "ئەو کچە هەتیوخانەکە بەڕێوە دەبات

وە ئەو بۆ ماوەی سێ ڕۆژە لێرەیە

and she's been here three days."

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

This was movie day that she organized where all the kids went to the movies.

ئەمە ڕۆژی سەیرکردنی فلیم بوو کە ئەو ڕێکیخسبوو ..کە هەموو منداڵەکان چوون بۆ تەماشاکردنی

زۆربەی ئەو مندالانەی کە بەخێو دەکران

A lot of the kids who had been adopted wrote back to the other kids,

telling them what their life was like with their new families.

So it was a really big deal when the letters showed up.

This is a woman who is now working at the orphanage,

Gene and Gayle started studying Korean

the moment they had gotten my first letter.

They really wanted to be able to welcome Eun-Sook into their family.

So, my friend Gene flew over with his son, Tim.

And they spent a lot of time huddled over a dictionary.

The uncle went back to his family

and Natasha and Tim and Gene and I went out to dinner.

And Gene was showing Natasha how to use a knife and fork,

and then Natasha was returning the utensil lessons.

We went back to our hotel room,

and Gene was showing Natasha also where Atlanta was.

This is the third night we were in Korea.

The first night we'd gotten a room for the kids right next to us.

I'd been staying in this room for about three months --

it was a little 15-story Korean hotel.

The second night, we didn't keep the kids' room,

because we slept on the floor with all the kids at the orphanage.

And the third night, we came back --

لە شەوی سێیەم ،گەراینەوە . بۆ نانی ئێوارە چوینە دەرەوە

لە شوێنێک کە وێنەکان دەبینی و چوینە پرسگە

we'd just gone out to dinner, where you saw the pictures --

و ئەو پیاوەی لە پرسگە بوو ووتی

and we got to the front desk, and the guy said,

هیچ ژورێکی چۆڵ نییە بۆ ئەم شەو لەقاتەکەی ئێوە

"There's no other free rooms on your floor tonight,

ئەگەر دەتانەوێت منداڵەکان لە پێنج قات خوار خۆتانەوە بهێننەوە، ژوور هەیە لەوێ

you can put the kids five floors below you."

And Gene and I looked at each other and said,

من و جین تەماشای یەکترمان ئەکردو وتم

"We don't want two 11-year-olds five floors away."

نەخێر، نامەوێت دوو مندالی (١١) ساڵ پێنج قات لە خۆمانەوە دوور بن

So his son said, "I have a sleeping bag, I'll sleep on the floor."

And I said, "I have one too." So Tim and I slept on the floor,

Natasha got one bed, Gene got the other -- kids pass out,

ناتاشا جێگایەکی دەست کەوت و منیش ئەویتریان.. منداڵەکان خەوتن

سێ ڕۆژی زۆر خۆش بوو

it's been very exciting for three days.

لەسەر جێگاکان درێژبوین من و جین باسی باشی خۆمان ئەکرد

We're lying in bed, and Gene and I are talking about how cool we are.

We said, "That was so great, we saved this little girl's life."

ووتمان،"ئەمە زۆر باش بوو ،ژیانی ئەو کچە بچووکەمان ڕزگارکرد

We were just like, you know, just full of ourselves.

دەزانی، ئێمە وەک ئەوە وابوین کە لەناو خۆماندا دڵخۆش بووین

And we fall asleep --

and I've been in this room for a couple of months now.

And they always overheat the hotels in Korea terribly,

so during the day I always left the window open.

And then about midnight, they turn the heat off in the hotel.

I'd been doing this every night I'd been there.

So, sure enough, it's one o'clock, room's freezing,

I go to close the window and I hear people shouting outside,

and I thought, "Oh, the bars must have just gotten out."

I don't speak Korean, but I'm hearing these voices,

and I'm not hearing anger, I'm hearing terror.

So I open the window and I look out,

and there's flames coming up the side of our hotel,

and the hotel's on fire.

So I run over to Gene and I wake him up,

بەرەو جین ڕام کرد خەبەرم کردەوە

and I say, "Don't freak out, I think the hotel's on fire."

And the whole room filled with smoke in about two seconds.

There's people screaming.

I just remember this unbelievable -- just utter chaos.

I remember sitting near the bed, and I had two overwhelming feelings.

One was absolute terror. "Oh, please God, I just want to wake up.

I said, "Somewhere in my Halliburton."

He says, "We've got to stop the smoke. That's all we can do."

I mean, Gene -- thank God for Gene.

So we put the room service menus over the vents in the wall,

waiting for people to jump.

Eleven people ended up dying in the fire.

Five people jumped and died, other people were killed by the smoke.

And there's this loud thumping on the door after about 45 minutes in all this,

and people were shouting in Korean.

And I remember --

Natasha didn't want us opening the door --

sorry, I was trying not to open the door,

because we'd spent so much time barricading the room.

People were lying on the floor.

It was one of just the most horrifying nights.

And then 12 hours later, we rented a car, as we had planned to,

and drove back to Natasha's village.

And we kept saying, "Do you realize we were dying in a hotel fire,

like eight hours ago?"

It's so weird how life just goes on.

Natasha wanted to introduce her brother and father to all the villagers,

and the day we showed up turned out to be a 60-year-old man's birthday.

This guy's 60 years old.

So it turned into a dual celebration,

because Natasha was the first person from this village

I had a wonderful deal with Cathay Pacific airlines for many years,
