Cities are like siblings in a large polygamous family.

The "why" of cities is largely the same, no matter where they are:

Like any major city, that place is a lot of things,

Belonging in Lagos is a fluid concept

Among the Yoruba, we have a saying,

which can be translated to mean that Lagos will welcome anyone.

But that saying is becoming less and less true.

Many Lagosians, including the descendants of those fisherpeople

زۆر کەسی خەڵکی لاگۆس، بە نەوەکانی ئەو خەڵکە ماسیگرانەشەوە

who arrived generations before my grandfather,

are now being pushed out

to make room for an emergent city

that has been described as "the new Dubai."

You see, Lagos inspires big dreams, even in its leaders,

and successive governments have declared aspirations

Unfortunately, instead of focusing on the eradication of poverty

Last October, the Governor announced plans

to acute housing deficits and income inequality?

And what is a shanty if not a person making a home for themselves

against all odds?

Slums are an imperfect housing solution,

We have our own identity,

and as anyone who knows Lagos can tell you,

poor Lagosians are very often the source of the city's character.

The conditions that cause us to define certain neighborhoods as slums

Informal settlements are incorrectly named as the problem.

In fact, the real problems are the factors that create them,

هەتا بیرم بێنێتەوە کە چەندێک شانازیم پێوە ئەکات،

how proud [my grandfather] and my mother would have been.

بابیرم و دایکیشم چەندێک شانازیان ئەکرد ئەگەر بمانانایە.

I am their dreams come true.

من هاتنە دی خەونەکەیانم.

But there is no reason why their dreams -- or mine, for that matter --

بەڵام هیچ هۆکارێک نییە کە خەونەکەیان -- یان خەونەکەی من، بۆ ئەو مەسەلەیە ---

are allowed to come true

ڕێگەی پێبدرێت بێتە دی

while those of others are turned to nightmares.

لەکاتێکا ئەوەی ئەوانی تر ببێت بە خەوێکی ناخۆش.

the minimum requirement for a dream

but not for Magdalene,

the millions still under threat in Lagos

or any of our cities.

The world does not have to remain blind

نابێ جیهان بە نابینایی بمێنێتەوە

to the suffering that is created when we deny people's humanity,

بۆ ناڵاندنەکەی درووست ئەکرێت کاتێک نکوڵی لە مرۆڤبوونی خەڵک ئەکەین،

or even to the incredible potential for growth that exists

یان تەنانەت توانا سەرسوڕهێنەرەکەش بۆ گەشەکردن هەیە هەیە

when we recognize and value all contributions.

کاتێک هەموو ڕۆڵبینەرەکان ئەناسینەوە و ئەینرخێنین.

We must hold our governments

پێویستە حکومەتەکان و

and ourselves

خۆشمان

accountable

بە بەرپرسیار بزانین

for keeping our shared cities safe for everyone in them,

بۆ هێشتنەوەی شارە هاوبەشەکانمان بە سەلامەتی بۆ هەمووان،

because the only cities worth building --

چونکە تەنیا شارەکانی شایەنی بنیاتنان بن --

indeed, the only futures worth dreaming of --

بێگومان، تەنیا داهاتووەکانی شایەنی ئەوەن خەونی پێوە ببینیت --

are those that include all of us,

ئەوانەن کە جێگەی هەموومان ئەبێتەوە،

no matter who we are

گرنگ نییە کە کێین

or how we make homes for ourselves.
