of seeing celebrities adopting kids from the African continent?

لە بینینی کەسە بەناو بانگەکان کە منداڵان ھەڵدە گرنەوە لە کیشوەری ئەفریقا؟

Well, it's not all that bad.

باشە، ھەمووشی خراپ نییە.

I was adopted.

من ھەڵگیراوە بووم.

I grew up in rural Uganda,

لە لادێیەکی ئۆگەندا گەورەبووم.

lost both my parents when I was very, very young.

دایک و باوکم لە دەست دا کاتێک زۆر، زۆر مندال بووم.

And when my parents passed,

کە دایک و باوکم کۆچی دوایانکرد،

I experienced all the negative effects of poverty,

توشی هەموو لایەنە نەرێنییەکانی هەژاری بووم،

from homelessness,

هەرلە بێ ماڵییەوە،

eating out of trash piles,

ھەتا خواردنی سەر زبڵدانەکانم دەخوارد،

you name it.

ئێوه ناوی بنێن.

But my life changed

بەڵام ژیانم گۆڕا

when I got accepted into an orphanage.

کە لە ھەتیوگەیەک وەرگیرام.

Through one of those sponsor-an-orphan programs,

لە ڕێگەی ئەو بەرنامانەی کە سپۆنسەری بەخێوکەری ھەتیووانن

I was sponsored and given an opportunity to acquire an education.

بەخێوکرام و ھەلێکی خوێندنم پێدرا.

I started off in Uganda.

لە ئوگەندا دەستم پێکرد.

I went through school, and the way this particular program worked,

بۆ قوتابخانه چووم و بەم شێوەیە، ئەم بەرنامە تایبەتە سودی ھەبوو،

you finished high school and after high school,

کە خوێندنی ئامادەیت تەواو کرد و دوای ئامادەی

you go learn a trade -- to become a carpenter, a mechanic

بۆ فێربوونی بازرگانی دەچوویت بۆ بوون بە دارتاش، فیتەر

or something along those lines.

یان شتێک پەیوەندی بەو بوارانە ھەبێت.

My case was a little different.

بارودۆخی من کەمێک جیاواز بوو.

The sponsor family that was sending these 25 dollars a month

خێزانی بەخێوکەرەکەم ٢٥ دۆلاری بۆ مانگێک دەنارد

to this orphanage to sponsor me,

بۆ ئەم ھەتیوگە بۆ بەخێوکردنم،

which -- I had never met them --

کە من ھەرگیز چاوم پێیان نەکەوتبوو

said, "Well ...

وتیان،"باش...

we would like to send you to college instead."

"حەزمان لێیە بتنێرین بۆ کۆلێج.

Oh -- it gets better.

ئۆھ ئەمە باشترە.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And they said, "If you get the paperwork,

وتیان، "گەر کاروبارە یاسایەکان ڕای بکەی

we'll send you to school in America instead."

ئێمە لە جیاتی ئەوێ دەتنێرین "بۆ قوتابخانە لە ئەمریکا.

So with their help,

لەگەل یارمەتیان،

I went to the embassy and applied for the visa.

بۆ باڵوێزخانەکە چووم و داوای ڤیزەم کرد.

I got the visa.

ڤیزەکەم وەرگرت.

I remember this day like it was yesterday.

ئەو ڕۆژەم بیرە ھەروەک ئەوەی دوێنێ بێت.

I walked out of the embassy with this piece of paper in my hand,

بە ڤیزەکەی دەستمەوە باڵوێزخانەکەم جێ ھێشت،

a hop in my step,

بازم دەدا و دەڕۆشتم،

smile on my face,

زەردەخەنە لەسەر دەم و چاوم،

knowing that my life is about to change.

دەمزانی کە ژیانم گۆڕانکاری بەسەر دێت.

I went home that night,

چوومەوە ماڵەوە ئەو شەوە،

and I slept with my passport,

و لەگەڵ پاسپۆرتەکەم نووستم،

because I was afraid that someone might steal it.

چونکە دەترسام کەسێک لێم بدزێ.

(Laughter)

I couldn't fall asleep.

نەم دەتوانی بخەوم.

I kept feeling it.

بەردەوام ھەستم پێ دەکرد.

I had a good idea for security.

بۆ پاراستنی بیرۆکەیەکی باشم هەبوو.

I was like, "OK, I'm going to put it in a plastic bag,

پێم ،"باش، بوو بیخەمە ناو جانتایەکی پلاستیکی

and take it outside and dig a hole, and put it in there."

هەروەها بچمە دەرەوە و قۆڵتێک هەڵبکەنم و بیەخەمە ناوی."

I did that, went back in the house.

کردم، بۆ ناو ماڵەکەم گەڕامەوە.

I could not fall asleep. I was like, "Maybe someone saw me."

نەم دەتوانی بنووم. پێم وابوو لەوانەیە کەسێک منی بینیبێت."

I went back --

گەڕامەوە

(Laughter)

I pulled it out, and I put it with me the entire night --

دەرم ھێنا، تەواوی شەوەکە لە تەنیشت خۆم دام نا

all to say that it was an anxiety-filled night.

ئەوەی بوترێت ئەوەبوو کە تەواوی شەوەکە پڕ بوو لە دڵە ڕاوکێ.

Going to the US was, just like another speaker said,

ڕۆشتن بۆ ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان، وەک قسەکەرێکی تر وتی،

was my first time to see a plane,

یەکەم جارم بوو کە فڕۆکە ببینم،

be on one, let alone sit on it to fly to another country.

بینی سەیر بوو، نەک بەتەنیا دانیشیت و بفڕی بۆ وڵاتێکی تر.

٧:٠٨ ئێوارە

I sat in seat 7A.

دانیشتم لەسەر کورسی ٧ ئەی.

Fly Emirates.

فڵای ئیماڕات.

One of the most gorgeous, beautiful women I've ever seen walked up,

یەکێک لە شۆخترین، و جوانترین ئافرەت کە تائێستا بینیبێتم سەرکەوت،

red little hat with a white veil.

کڵاوێکی بچوکی سور بە تارایەکی سپییەوە.

I'm looking terrified, I have no idea what I'm doing.

بەترساوی دەمڕوانی. ھیچ بیرۆکەیەکم نەبوو کە چی دەکەم

She hands me this warm towel --

ئەم خاولیە گەرمەی پێدام

warm, steamy, snow white.

گەرم، شێدار، سپی بەفرینی.

I'm looking at this warm towel;

دەمڕوانییە ئەم خاولیە گەرمە;

I don't know what to do with my life, let alone with this damn towel --

نازانم چی بکەم لەگەڵ ژیانم، ئینجا لەگەڵ ئەم خاولیە نەفرەتییە

(Laughter)

I did one of the --

یەکدانەم کرد لە --

you know, anything anyone could do in that situation:

دەزانیت، ھەرشتێک کە دەتوانرێ لەم بارودۆخەدا بیکرێت:

look around, see what everyone else is doing.

سەیرێکی دەورووبەرم کرد، تێگەیشتم کە ئەوانی تر چی دەکەن.

I did the same.

منیش ھەمان شتم کرد.

Mind you, I drove about seven hours from my village to the airport that day.

سەرنج بدەن، نزیکی بۆماوەی حەوت سەعات لە لادێکەمەوە بۆ فڕۆکەخانە شۆفێریم کرد.

So I grab this warm towel,

جا ئەم خاولییە گەرمەشم گرتبوو،

wipe my face just like everyone else is doing,

دەم و چاوم پێسڕی وەک ھەرکەسێکی تر،

I look at it --

سەیرێکی دەکەم

damn.

نەفرەت.

(Laughter)

It was all dirt brown.

ھەمووی قاوەیی و چڵکن بوو.

(Laughter)

I remember being so embarrassed that when she came by to pick it up,

بیرمە زۆر شەرمەزار بووم کە هات و بیبات،

I didn't give mine.

ئەوەی خۆمم پێنەدا.

(Laughter)

I still have it.

ھێشتا ماومە.

(Laughter)

Going to America opened doors for me

چوونم بۆ ئەمریکا دەرگاکانی بۆ کردمەوە

to live up to my full God-given potential.

بۆ ئەوەی بە دڵسۆزی بۆ ئەو شتانەی کە خوا پێی بەخشیووم بژیم.

I remember when I arrived,

لەبیرمە کە گەیشتم،

the sponsor family embraced me,

خێزانە بەخێوکەرەکە لە ئامێزیان گرتم،

and they literally had to teach me everything from scratch:

پێویست بوو هەموو شتێکم لە سەرەتاوە فێر بکەن:

this is a microwave, that's a refrigerator --

ئەمە فڕنی مایکرۆییە، ئەمە بەفرگرە

things I'd never seen before.

شتانێک ھەرگیز پێشتر نەم بینیبوون.

And it was also the first time

و ھەروەھا یەکەم جاریشم بوو

I got immersed into a new and different culture.

بەو کلتورە تازە و جیاوازە حەپەسا بووم،

These strangers showed me

ئەم کەسە نامۆیانە پشانیاندام

true love.

خۆشەویستی ڕاستەقینە.

These strangers showed me that I mattered,

ئەم کەسە نامۆیانە پشانیاندام کە گرنگم،

that my dreams mattered.

کە خەونەکانم گرنگن.

(Applause)

Thank you.

سوپاس.

These individuals had two of their own biological children.

ئەم کەسانە دوو منداڵی بایۆلۆجی خۆیان ھەبوو.

And when I came in, I had needs.

و کە چوومە ژوورەوە، پێیوستیم هەبوو.

They had to teach me English,

پێویست بوو فێری زمانی ئینگلیزیم بکەن،

teach me literally everything,

ھەمووشتێکم بە ڕێکی فێر بکەن،

which resulted in them spending a lot of time with me.

کە لە ئەنجامدا کاتێکی زۆریان لەگەڵم دا بەسەر دەبرد.

And that created a little bit of jealousy with their children.

ئەمە کەمێک بەغیلی دروست کرد لەگەڵ منداڵەکانیان.

So, if you're a parent in this room,

ئەگەر تۆ دایک و باوکێک بیت لەم ژوورە،

and you have those teenager children

و ھەروەھا ئەم منداڵە ھەرزەکارانەت ھەبێت

who don't want anything to do with your love and affection --

کەنەیان دەویست ھیچ شتێک لەگەڵ سۆز و خۆشەویستیتەوە بکەن

in fact, they find it repulsive --

لە ڕاستیدا، وەک نەویستراو تێدەگەیشتن --

I got a solution:

چارەسەرێکم دۆزیەوە:

adopt a child.

منداڵێک هەڵبگرەوە.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

It will solve the problem.

کێشەکە چارەسەر دەکات.

(Applause)

(چەپڵەڕێزان)

I went on to acquire two engineering degrees

بەردەوام بووم تا دوو بڕوانامەی ئەندازیاریم بەدەست ھێنا

from one of the best institutions in the world.

لەیەکێک لە باشترین پەیمانگاکانی جیھان.

I've got to tell you:

پێویستە پێتان بڵێم:

talent is universal,

بەهرە شتێکی گەردوونییە،

but opportunities are not.

بەڵام ھەڵەکان بەو شێوەیە نین.

And I credit this

باوەڕم وایە

to the individuals who embrace multiculturalism,

بۆ ئەو تاکانەی کە باوەشیان کردۆتەوە بۆ فرەکلتوری،

love, empathy

خۆشەویستی، ھاوسۆزی

and compassion for others.

و میھرەبانی بۆ ئەوانی تر.

We live in a world filled with hate:

لە جیهانێکی پڕ لە ڕق و کینە دەژین:

building walls,

دیوارەکان دروست دەکەن،

Brexit,

برێگزێت (پڕۆژەی دەرکەوتنی بەریتانیا لە یەکێتی ئەورۆپی)

xenophobia here on the African continent.

لێرە لە کیشوەری ئەفریقا ترسی لە بێگانە بوونی ھەیە.

Multiculturalism can be an answer

فرە کلتوری دەبێتە وەڵامێک

to many of these worst human qualities.

بۆ زۆرێک لەم تایبەتمەندییە خراپانەی مرۆڤ.

Today, I challenge you

ئەمڕۆ، سەرکێشییەکتان لەگەل دەکەم

to help a young child experience multiculturalism.

بە یارمەتی دانی منداڵێک کە ئەزموونی فرەکلتوری بکات.

I guarantee you that will enrich their life,

دڵنیاییتان دەکەم کە ژیانیان دەوڵەمەند دەکات،

and in turn,

و لە بەرامبەردا،

it will enrich yours.

ئێوەش دەوڵەمەند دەکات.

And as a bonus,

و وەک بەخشیشێک،

one of them may even give a TED Talk.

لەوانەیە یەکێکیان وتارێک لە تێد پێشکەش بکات.

We may not be able to solve the bigotry and the racism of this world today,

but certainly we can raise children

بەڵام بە دڵنیاییەوە دەتوانین منداڵەکانمان وا گەورە بکەین

to create a positive, inclusive, connected world

کە کەسانی ئەرێنی بن، هەمەلایەن بن، پەیوەست بن بە جیهان

full of empathy,

پڕ لە سۆز

love

خۆشەویستی

and compassion.

و میهرەبانی.

Love wins.

خۆشەویستی سەردەکەوێت.
