Well, it's not all that bad.

लेकिन यह इतना भी बुरा नहीं हैं

I was adopted.

मैं गोद लिया गया था

I grew up in rural Uganda,

मैं यूगांडा में पला-बड़ा था

lost both my parents when I was very, very young.

मैंने अपने माता-पिता

को छोटी उम्र में

खो दिया था

And when my parents passed,

जब वे चले गए

I experienced all the negative effects of poverty,

मुझे निर्धनता के सारे बूरे

from homelessness,

eating out of trash piles,

you name it.

But my life changed

when I got accepted into an orphanage.

Through one of those sponsor-an-orphan programs,

I was sponsored and given an opportunity to acquire an education.

मुझे प्रायोजन और एक शिस्क्षा

और एक शिस्क्षा पाने की मौक्का मिला

I started off in Uganda.

I went through school, and the way this particular program worked,

you finished high school and after high school,

My case was a little different.

we would like to send you to college instead."

Oh -- it gets better.

And they said, "If you get the paperwork,

we'll send you to school in America instead."

हम तुम्हे यहाँ बजाये

So with their help,

I went to the embassy and applied for the visa.

मैं दूतावास अपने वीज़ा की आवेदन के लिए गया

I got the visa.

मुझे वीज़ा मिला.

I remember this day like it was yesterday.

मुझे यह दिन, एकदम कल जैसे याद हैं

I walked out of the embassy with this piece of paper in my hand,

मैं दूतावास से, इस कागज़ को हाथ

में लिए, निकला

a hop in my step,

मेरी चाल में उजाल

smile on my face,

मुँह पर मुस्कान

knowing that my life is about to change.

यह जानकर की मेरी ज़िन्दगी बदलने वाली थी

I went home that night,

मैं उस रात घर गया

and I slept with my passport,

और अपने पासपोर्ट के साथ सोया

because I was afraid that someone might steal it.

इसी डर के साथ की कोई उसे चुरा लेगा

(Laughter)

I couldn't fall asleep.

मैं सो न पाया

I kept feeling it.

मैं उसे छूता रहा

I had a good idea for security.

मुझे सुरक्षा के लिए एक

अच्छा विचार आया

I was like, "OK, I'm going to put it in a plastic bag,

मैंने कहा, "ठीक हैं- "मैं इसको एक

प्लास्टिक की थैली में ढालकर

and take it outside and dig a hole, and put it in there."

बहार लेजाकर, एक छेद में छुपा देता हूँ"

I did that, went back in the house.

वो मैंने किया, और फिर भीतर जाकर

I could not fall asleep. I was like, "Maybe someone saw me."

और फिर नींद नहीं आने पर मैंने

सोचा, "किसी ने मुझे देख लिया होगा"

I went back --

मैं वापस गया

(Laughter)

I pulled it out, and I put it with me the entire night --

मैंने उसे निकलकर पूरी रात मेरे पास रखा

all to say that it was an anxiety-filled night.

कहने को, वह एक चिंता भरी रात थी

Going to the US was, just like another speaker said,

पहले बार अमरीका जाना,

was my first time to see a plane,

be on one, let alone sit on it to fly to another country.

श्याम के ७.०८ बजे.

I sat in seat 7A.

मैं कुर्सी ७-ा पर बैठा था

Fly Emirates.

एमिरेट्स हावईजहाज़ में

One of the most gorgeous, beautiful women I've ever seen walked up,

एक सबसे सुन्दर औरत मेरे पास आयी

red little hat with a white veil.

छोटी लाल टोपी और सफेद घूंघट

I'm looking terrified, I have no idea what I'm doing.

मैं डरा हुआ लग रहा हूँ मुझे मालुम नहीं मैं क्या कर रहा हूँ।

She hands me this warm towel --

वो मुझे एक गर्म तौलिया देती हैं-

warm, steamy, snow white.

I'm looking at this warm towel;

मैं इस नर्म तौलिये को देख रहा हूँ

I don't know what to do with my life, let alone with this damn towel --

मुझे अपने ज़िन्दगी का कुछ नहीं पता

और यह तौलिया का तो बिलकुल नहीं

I did one of the --

मैंने वो इक

you know, anything anyone could do in that situation:

वही जो इस हालत में कोई भी कर सकता हैं

look around, see what everyone else is doing.

मेरे आस पास देखा की लोग क्या कर रहे थे

I did the same.

मैंने वही किया याद रहे,

Mind you, I drove about seven hours from my village to the airport that day.

मैंने उस दिन अपने गाँव से हवाईअड्डे तक की यात्रा, सात घंटे गाड़ी में की थी

So I grab this warm towel,

तो मैं इस गरम तौलिये को लेकर

wipe my face just like everyone else is doing,

अपना मुँह पोछता हूँ-

वैसेही जैसे सब कर रहे हैं

I look at it --

मैं उसे देकता हूँ

जैसे सब लोग कर रहे है

damn.

छी !

It was all dirt brown.

वह पूरा गंदला भूरा था

I remember being so embarrassed that when she came by to pick it up,

I didn't give mine.

मैंने मेरा नहीं दिया

I still have it.

Going to America opened doors for me

अमरीका जाना

मेरे लिए बहुत

दरवाज़े खोलने लगा

to live up to my full God-given potential.

मेरी पूर्ण ईश्वर

I remember when I arrived,

मुझे याद है, जब मैं पहुंचा

the sponsor family embraced me,

मेरे प्रायोजक-परिवार ने मुझे गले लगाया

and they literally had to teach me everything from scratch:

उनको मुझे सब शुरुवात से सिखाना पड़ा

this is a microwave, that's a refrigerator --

यह माइक्रोवेव है , वो फ्रिज है

things I'd never seen before.

यह चीज़े मैंने पहले कभी नहीं देखी थी

And it was also the first time

और यह पहला बार था

I got immersed into a new and different culture.

की मैं एक नए और अलग संस्कृति में डूबा था

These strangers showed me

इन अजनबियों ने मुझे

true love.

These strangers showed me that I mattered,

इन अजनबियों ने मुझे दिखाया कि

मैं मायने रखता हूं,

that my dreams mattered.

मेरे सपने मायने रखते हैं

These individuals had two of their own biological children.

इन लोगों के अपने दो सगे बच्चे थे

And when I came in, I had needs.

और जब मैं आया, मेरी भी ज़रूरते थी

They had to teach me English,

उनको मुझे अंग्रेजी सिखाना पड़ा

teach me literally everything,

which resulted in them spending a lot of time with me.

इसके कारण वे मेरे संग

बहुत वक्त बिताने लगे

And that created a little bit of jealousy with their children.

और उनके बच्चे थोड़े जलने लगे

So, if you're a parent in this room,

तो अगर इस कमरे में कोई एक माता या पिता हो

and you have those teenager children

जिसके पास वो किशोर बच्चे हो

who don't want anything to do with your love and affection --

जिनको आपके प्यार और स्नेह से दूर रहना हो

in fact, they find it repulsive --

असल में उन्हें यह सब अरुचिकर लगता है

I got a solution:

मेरे पास इसका उपाय है

adopt a child.

एक बच्चे को गोद ले लो

(Laughter)

It will solve the problem.

समस्या का समाधान होगा

I went on to acquire two engineering degrees

मैंने आगे दो इंजीनियरिंग डिग्री हासिल किये

from one of the best institutions in the world.

दुनिया की एक सर्वोत्तम कॉलेज से

I've got to tell you:

मुझे आपको बोलना पड़ेगा

talent is universal,

but opportunities are not.

लेकीन मौके नहीं

And I credit this

और मैं यह श्रेय

to the individuals who embrace multiculturalism,

उनको देता हूँ जो बहुसंस्कृतिवाद

को अपनाते हैं

love, empathy

प्यार, सहानुभूति

and compassion for others.

और दूसरो के लिए हमदर्दी

We live in a world filled with hate:

हम एक नफरत भरी दुनिये में रहते हैं

building walls,

Brexit,

ब्रेक्सिट

xenophobia here on the African continent.

यहाँ अफ्रीका मैं,

विदेशियों को ना अपनाना

Multiculturalism can be an answer

to many of these worst human qualities.

Today, I challenge you

to help a young child experience multiculturalism.

और बहुसंस्कृतिवाद महसूस करे

I guarantee you that will enrich their life,

मैं आपको वचन देता हूं,

उनका जीवन समृद्ध होगा

and in turn,

और बदले में

it will enrich yours.

And as a bonus,

और अधिलाभ में

one of them may even give a TED Talk.

We may not be able to solve the bigotry and the racism of this world today,

शायद हम इस दुनिया की कट्टरता और

नस्लवाद को कभी सुलझा न पाए

but certainly we can raise children

लकिन हम ज़रूर बच्चे पाल सकते हैं

to create a positive, inclusive, connected world

जो एक आशावादी, समावेशी और

जुड़ा हुआ संसार बना सकते हैं

full of empathy,

सहानुभूति से भरा,

love

प्यारा

and compassion.

और दयालु

Love wins.

प्यार की जीत होती हैं.
