Jonathan Drori: Every pollen grain has a story

Thank you. I have two missions here today.

The first is to tell you something about pollen, I hope,

and to convince you that it's more than just something that gets up your nose.

that every home really ought to have a scanning electron microscope.

Pollen is a flower's way of making more flowers.

꽃가루는 더 많은 꽃을 만들기 위한 그들만의 방법입니다.

It carries male sex cells

꽃가루는 하나의 꽃에서 다른 꽃으로

from one flower to another.

남성의 세포를 운반하죠

This gives us genetic diversity,

이것은 우리에게 유전적인 다양성을 주기도 하고

or at least it gives the plants genetic diversity.

적어도 식물에게는 유전적인 다양성을 주죠.

And it's really rather better not to mate with yourself.

That's probably true of humans as well, mostly.

Pollen is produced by the anthers of flowers.

Each anther can carry up to 100,000 grains of pollen,

so, it's quite prolific stuff.

And it isn't just bright flowers

that have pollen; it's also trees and grasses.

And remember that all our cereal crops are grasses as well.

Here is a scanning electron micrograph of a grain of pollen.

The little hole in the middle, we'll come to a bit later,

but that's for the pollen tube

So, that's 20 micrometers across,

that pollen grain there.

That's about a 50th of a millimeter.

But not all pollen is quite so simple looking.

This is Morina. This is a plant --

이건 Morina 입니다.

which I've always thought to be rather tedious --

named after Morin,

Morin의 이름에서 따왔죠

who was an enterprising French gardener,

프랑스에서 정원사업을 운영하던 사람으로

who issued the first seed catalog

1621년에는 최초로

in 1621.

씨앗의 카탈로그를 출판했던 사람이죠

But anyway, take a look at its pollen.

다시 본론으로 돌아와서, 이 꽃가루를 보시죠

This is amazing, I think.

제가 보기엔 이건 매우 놀랄 일입니다.

That little hole in the middle there is for the pollen tube,

가운데 있는 작은 구멍이 꽃가루 튜브를 위한 것이죠.

and when the pollen finds its special female spot

그리고 꽃가루가 특별한 종착역을 발견하였을때

in another Morina flower,

즉, 다른 Morina 꽃 말입니다.

just on the right species, what happens?

올바른 종자 위에 말이죠. 무슨일이 일어날까요?

Like I said, pollen carries the male sex cells.

제가 말했지만, 꽃가루는 남성세포의 운반을 담당합니다.

If you actually didn't realize that plants have sex,

만약 여러분이 식물들이 성을 가지고 있다는것을 깨닫지 못했다면

they have rampant, promiscuous

그들은 난잡하고 걷잡을 수 없어 집니다.

and really quite interesting and curious sex. Really.

(Laughter) A lot.

My story is actually not about plant propagation,

but about pollen itself.

꽃가루 그 자체죠.

"So, what are pollen's properties?" I hear you ask.

자, 꽃가루의 특성에 관한 제가 들은 질문들입니다.

First of all, pollen is tiny. Yes we know that.

우선, 꽃가루는 작습니다. 네 여러분들도 알고 있죠

It's also very biologically active,

그리고 생물학적으로 매우 활동적입니다.

as anyone with hay fever will understand.

꽃가루 알러지를 가진 사람이라면 쉽게 이해할 수 있을 것입니다.

Now, pollen from plants, which are wind-dispersed --

식물로부터 나온 꽃가루들은 바람에 잘 흩날립니다.

like trees and grasses and so on --

나무나 풀들도 마찬가지죠

tend to cause the most hay fever.

대부분의 꽃가루 알레르기를 일으키는 것과 비슷합니다.

And the reason for that is they've got to chuck out

masses and masses of pollen to have any chance

of the pollen reaching another plant of the same species.

Here are some examples --

they're very smooth if you look at them --

So, trees: very boring flowers,

not really trying to attract insects.

Cool pollen, though.

This one I particularly like.

This is the Monterey Pine, which has little air sacks

이것은 작은 공기 주머니를 가진 Monterey 소나무 입니다.

to make the pollen carry even further.

공기주머니는 꽃가루가 더 멀리가도록 도와주죠.

Remember, that thing is just about 30 micrometers across.

기억하면, 이것은 겨우 30um 정도의 지름을 가지고 있습니다.

Now, it's much more efficient if you can get insects to do your bidding.

수정을 위해 곤충을 활용한다면 좀 더 효율적이겠지요.

This is a bee's leg

with the pollen glommed onto it from a mallow plant.

And this is the outrageous and beautiful

flower of the mangrove palm.

망그로브 야자수의 꽃 입니다.

Very showy, to attract lots of insects to do its bidding.

매우 화려하죠. 곤충들을 많이 부를 수 있을 정도로 매력적입니다.

The pollen has little barbs on it,

꽃가루에는 작은 낚시바늘 같은 것들이 있습니다.

if we look.

자 한번 보시죠

Now, those little barbs

작은 바늘들 입니다.

obviously stick to the insects well,

이런 바늘들이 곤충에게 잘 달라붙게 도와주죠

but there is something else that we can tell from this photograph,

하지만, 이 사진들을 보시면 다른것들을 알 수 있습니다.

and that is that you might be able to see a fracture line

만약 그것이 지구라면, 지구의 적도를 가로지르는

across what would be the equator of this, if it was the Earth.

균열을 볼 수 있습니다.

That tells me that it's actually been fossilized, this pollen.

그것은 이 꽃가루들이 실제로 화석화 되버린다는 것을 말해줍니다.

And I'm rather proud to say

그리고, 저는 런던근처에서 발견한것을 말씀드리기를 좋아하는데

that this was found just near London, and that 55 million years ago

5천 5백만 년 전에

London was full of mangroves.

Isn't that cool?

Okay, so this is another species evolved to be dispersed by insects.

You can tell that from the little barbs on there.

All these pictures were taken with a scanning electron microscope,

actually in the lab at Kew Laboratories.

No coincidence that these were taken

and I think it's someone with a design and artistic eye

Now, all this diversity

자, 모든 이런 다양성들은

means that you can look at a pollen grain

실제로 여러분들이 보시는 꽃가루를 의미하고

and tell what species it came from,

어디서부터 온 것인지 말해주죠.

and that's actually quite handy if you

만약 여러분이 이것들이 어디서 부터 온것인지 알기를 원하고

maybe have a sample and you want to see where it came from.

샘플들을 가지고 있다면 그것을 알아내는 것은 매우 쉽습니다

So, different species of plants

자, 각각의 다른 종자의 식물들은

grow in different places,

서로 다른 곳에서 자랍니다.

and some pollen carries further than others.

그리고 몇몇 꽃가루들은 다른 것들 보다 좀 더 멀리 이동을 하기도 하죠

So, if you have a pollen sample,

then in principle, you should be able to tell

where that sample came from.

And this is where it gets interesting for forensics.

Pollen is tiny. It gets on to things, and it sticks to them.

So, not only does each type of pollen look different,

but each habitat has a different combination of plants.

각각의 서식지에서 다양한 식물의 조합을 가지고 있습니다.

A different pollen signature, if you like,

or a different pollen fingerprint.

By looking at the proportions and combinations

of different kinds of pollen in a sample,

일부분과 조합을 해보면

you can tell very precisely where it came from.

여러분은 정확히 그것들이 어디서 왔는지 알 수 있습니다.

This is some pollen embedded in a cotton shirt,

이것은 코튼 셔츠에 묻어있던 꽃가루인데요

similar to the one that I'm wearing now.

제가 지금 입고 있는것과 비슷하군요

Now, much of the pollen will still be there

대부분의 꽃가루들은 반복해서 빨래를 해도

after repeated washings.

Where has it been?

어디에 숨어 있을까요?

Four very different habitats might look similar,

4가지의 다른 서식지들은 유사해 보입니다만

but they've got very different pollen signatures.

각기 다른 꽃가루 특성을 가지고 있습니다.

Actually this one is particularly easy, these pictures were all taken

실제로 첫번째 것은 매우 쉽죠.

in different countries.

이것들은 모두 다른 나라에서 왔습니다.

But pollen forensics can be very subtle.

그러나 꽃가루를 활용한 수사는 매우 유용합니다.

It's being used now to track

이것들은 가짜 약들이 어디서 만들어졌는지

where counterfeit drugs have been made,

추적하는데 사용되고 있고

where banknotes have come from,

지폐들이 어디서 왔는지

to look at the provenance of antiques

골동품의 출처를 찾아 보기도 하고

and see that they really did come from the place

판매상들이 말해줬던 그 물건들이 왔던 장소를

the seller said they did.

말해주기도 합니다.

And murder suspects have been tracked

살인 혐의자들을 추적할 때

using their clothing,

그들의 옷을 이용하고 있습니다.

certainly in the U.K., to within an area

특히, 영국의 특정지역에서는

that's small enough that you can send in tracker dogs

살인사건의 희생자들을 찾아내는데는

to find the murder victim.

충분히 한 역할을 할 수 있습니다. 경찰견처럼 말이죠.

So, you can tell from a piece of clothing

그래서 여러분은 수킬로미터 안에 있는

to within about a kilometer or so,

where that piece of clothing has been recently

and then send in dogs.

And finally, in a rather grizzly way,

the Bosnia war crimes;

보스니아 전쟁에 대한 이야기 입니다.

some of the people brought to trial were brought to trial

일부 사람들은 꽃가루의 증거로 인해서

because of the evidence from pollen,

재판에 회부되었다고 말을 합니다.

which showed that bodies had been buried,

그 꽃가루는 시체들이 매장되었다가, 다시 발굴되었으며

exhumed and then reburied somewhere else.

어딘가에 다시 묻혔다는것을 말해줍니다.

I hope I've opened your eyes,
