My job is to design, build and study robots that communicate with people.

But this story doesn't start with robotics at all, it starts with animation.

When I first saw Pixar's "Luxo Jr.,"

제가 픽사사(社)의 "럭소 주니어"를 처음 봤을 때

I was amazed by how much emotion they could put

into something as trivial as a desk lamp.

감정을 실을 수 있다는 것에 대해

I mean, look at them -- at the end of this movie,

you actually feel something for two pieces of furniture.

두 전등에서 실제로 뭔가를 느끼실거에요.

And I said, I have to learn how to do this.

전 이런 걸 어떻게하는지 배워야겠다고 생각했습니다.

그러니까 제가 진로 선택을 잘못했던 것이지요.

So I made a really bad career decision.

(Laughter)

And that's what my mom was like when I did it.

이건 제가 그런 결정을 내렸을 때 저희 어머니의 모습과 같아요.

(Laughter)

I left a very cozy tech job in Israel at a nice software company

이스라엘의 멋진 소프트웨어 회사의

편한 기술직을 떠나 애니메이션을 공부하러

and I moved to New York to study animation.

뉴욕으로 왔습니다.

And there I lived

그리고선 할렘가의 무너져가는

in a collapsing apartment building in Harlem with roommates.

아파트에서 룸메이트와 함께 살았죠.

I'm not using this phrase metaphorically --

비유적으로 말하는게 아니라

the ceiling actually collapsed one day in our living room.

실제로 하루는 거실 천장이

무너져 내렸습니다.

Whenever they did news stories about building violations in New York,

뉴욕시 건축 법규 위반에 대한 뉴스가 나올 때면

우리 아파트 입구가 항상 화면에 나왔어요.

they would put the report in front of our building,

얼마나 상황이 심각한지를 보여주기 위한 배경으로 말이죠.

as kind of, like, a backdrop to show how bad things are.

Anyway, during the day, I went to school

어쨌든 낮 동안에는 학교에 가고

and at night I would sit and draw frame by frame of pencil animation.

밤에는 연필 애니메이션을 한장 한장 앉아서 그렸습니다.

And I learned two surprising lessons.

그리고 두 가지 놀라운 교훈을 배웠어요.

One of them was that when you want to arouse emotions,

it doesn't matter so much how something looks;

it's all in the motion, in the timing of how the thing moves.

And the second was something one of our teachers told us.

그분은 아이스 에이지( Ice Age)에서 족제비를 그리셨었지요.

He actually did the weasel in "Ice Age."

And he said, "As an animator, you're not a director -- you're an actor."

그 분이 하신 말씀은:

"애니메이터는 감독이 아니라 배우다."

So, if you want to find the right motion for a character,

즉 캐릭터에게 적합한 동작을 찾고 싶다면

don't think about it -- go use your body to find it.

그걸 생각하는게 아니라 몸을 써서 찾아야 해요.

Stand in front of a mirror, act it out in front of a camera --

거울 앞에 서서 연기도 해봐야죠.

카메라 앞에서도요. -- 필요한 것은 뭐든 해서

whatever you need -- and then put it back in your character.

자신의 캐릭터 안에 넣어야 합니다.

A year later I found myself at MIT in the Robotic Life Group.

일 년 뒤에 저는 MIT의

로봇 생명 그룹에 들어갔어요.

It was one of the first groups researching the relationships

그곳은 인간과 로봇의 관계를 연구하는 최초의 조직 중 하나였지요.

between humans and robots.

저는 여전히 실제로 움직이는

And I still had this dream to make an actual, physical Luxo Jr. lamp.

But I found that robots didn't move at all in this engaging way

방식대로 움직이지 않는

that I was used to from my animation studies.

Instead, they were all -- how should I put it --

they were all kind of robotic.

And I thought, what if I took whatever I learned in animation school,

and used that to design my robotic desk lamp.

그리고 학교에서 배운 것을 사용하여 제 로봇 탁상용 전등을 디자인했습니다.

So I went and designed frame by frame

프레임별로 디자인해서

to try to make this robot as graceful and engaging as possible.

이 로봇을 만들려고 노력했습니다.

가능한 우아하고 매력있게 만들고자 했지요.

And here when you see the robot interacting with me on a desktop --

그렇게 저와 상호 반응하는

and I'm actually redesigning the robot,

so, unbeknownst to itself,

it's kind of digging its own grave by helping me.

I wanted it to be less of a mechanical structure giving me light,

최소한의 기계적 구조로

and more of a helpful, kind of quiet apprentice

더 실용적이며 필요할 때 언제나 곁에 있는

that's always there when you need it and doesn't really interfere.

조용한 견습생처럼 방해가 되지 않는 것이기를 원했어요.

And when, for example, I'm looking for a battery that I can't find,

예를 들어 건전지가 안보여서

in a subtle way, it'll show me where the battery is.

얌전하게 건전지가 어디 있는지 보여줄 겁니다.

So you can see my confusion here.

I'm not an actor.

저는 연기하고 있는 게 아닙니다.

And I want you to notice how the same mechanical structure

같은 기계 구조가 한 부분에서는

부드럽고 섬세하게 움직이는 것처럼 보이고

can, at one point, just by the way it moves,

다른 측면에서는 폭력적이고

seem gentle and caring and in the other case,

seem violent and confrontational.

대립적으로 보이는지 알 수 있으시길 바라요.

And it's the same structure, just the motion is different.

같은 구조지만 움직임은 다릅니다.

Actor: "You want to know something? Well, you want to know something?

배우: "뭘 원해? 뭘 원하는거야?

He was already dead!

그는 벌써 죽었다고!

Just laying there, eyes glazed over!"

이미 눈이 흐릿해진 채로 누워있잖아!"

But, moving in a graceful way is just one building block

하지만 우아하게 움직이는 건 전체 구조의 단 하나의 부분인데,

of this whole structure called human-robot interaction.

이것을 인간-로봇 상호작용이라고 합니다.

I was, at the time, doing my PhD, I was working on human-robot teamwork,

그 때 저는 박사 과정 중이었는데

인간-로봇 협력에 대해 연구하고 있었습니다.

인간과 로봇으로 구성된 팀이 함께 일하는거죠

teams of humans and robots working together.

I was studying the engineering,

공학을 공부하고,

the psychology, the philosophy of teamwork,

and at the same time,

I found myself in my own kind of teamwork situation,

제 친한 친구와 함께

제 방식으로 협력하고 있었습니다.

with a good friend of mine, who's actually here.

And in that situation, we can easily imagine robots

in the near future being there with us.

로봇이 함께 하리라는 것을 쉽게 상상할 수 있습니다.

It was after a Passover Seder.

유월절 만찬 후에

We were folding up a lot of folding chairs,

접이식 의자를 접고 있는데

and I was amazed at how quickly we found our own rhythm.

저는 일의 리듬을 얼마나 빨리 찾아낼 수 있는지에 놀랐어요.

모든 사람들은 각자의 일을 했습니다.

Everybody did their own part, we didn't have to divide our tasks.

일을 나눌 필요도 없었지요.

We didn't have to communicate verbally about this --

말로 할 필요도 없이

it all just happened.

저절로 되었지요.

And I thought, humans and robots don't look at all like this.

그래서 인간과 로봇은

이런 점에서 같지 않다고 생각했습니다.

When humans and robots interact, it's much more like a chess game:

인간과 로봇이 상호 교류할 때는

체스 게임과 더 비슷해요.

인간이 무언가를 하면

the human does a thing, the robot analyzes whatever the human did,

로봇은 인간이 한 모든 행동을 분석하고

다음에 무얼할지 결정하고

the robot decides what to do next, plans it and does it.

계획한 다음, 실행합니다.

Then the human waits, until it's their turn again.

그동안 인간은 차례가 돌아올 때까지 기다리지요.

그래서 체스 게임과 더 비슷한 겁니다.

So it's much more like a chess game, and that makes sense,

그리고 수학자들과 컴퓨터 공학자들에게

because chess is great for mathematicians and computer scientists.

체스가 대단한 것인게 의미가 있습니다.

다 정보 분석에 관한 것이거든요.

It's all about information, analysis, decision-making and planning.

결정하고, 계획하는 것을 포함해서요.

But I wanted my robot to be less of a chess player,

하지만 저는 제 로봇이 체스 게임 선수보다는

and more like a doer

단지 실행시키면

that just clicks and works together.

같이 일하는 존재가 되길 바랬습니다.

So I made my second horrible career choice:

그래서 전 두번째 끔찍한 진로 선택을 했지요.

I decided to study acting for a semester.

한 학기 동안 연기를 공부하기로 했습니다.

I took off from the PhD, I went to acting classes.

박사 과정을 그만 두고 연기 수업에 들어갔어요.

I actually participated in a play --

실제로 연극에 참여했었죠.

I hope there’s no video of that around still.

공연 영상이 아직 남아 있지 않길 바라면서요.

(Laughter)

And I got every book I could find about acting,

그리고 연기에 관한 모든 책을 찾아보았습니다.

including one from the 19th century that I got from the library.

그 중 19세기에 나온 책이 있어서

도서관에서 빌려왔습니다.

And I was really amazed, because my name was the second name on the list --

대출자 명단에 제 이름이 두번째로 올라있어서 깜짝 놀랐어요.

the previous name was in 1889.

첫번째 사람은 1899년도에 빌렸더군요. (웃음)

(Laughter)

And this book was kind of waiting for 100 years

이 책은 로봇학을 위해 재발견되기까지

to be rediscovered for robotics.

100년을 잠들어 있었던거죠.

And this book shows actors

이 책은 배우들이

how to move every muscle in the body

각 감정에 맞는 표현을 하기 위해

to match every kind of emotion that they want to express.

몸의 근육을 어떻게 움직여야 하는지 보여줍니다.

But the real revelation was when I learned about method acting.

하지만 진정한 도약은

메소드 연기에 대해 배웠을 때에요. (메소드 연기:극중 인물과 동일시를 통한 연기방법)

It became very popular in the 20th century.

그 기법은 20세기에 매우 성행했었습니다.

And method acting said

몰입 연기에서는 모든 근육 동작을 미리 계획할 필요가 없어요.

you don't have to plan every muscle in your body;

대신에 몸이 맞는 동작을 찾도록 하는거죠.

instead, you have to use your body to find the right movement.

감각 기억을 이용해서

You have to use your sense memory to reconstruct the emotions

감정을 재구성하고

and kind of think with your body to find the right expression --

알맞는 표현을 찾기 위해 몸으로 생각하는 겁니다.

improvise, play off your scene partner.

즉석에서 배역 상대를 연기하는 것이죠.

And this came at the same time

이건 체화된 인지라고 불리는 인지 심리학의 경향에 대해

as I was reading about this trend in cognitive psychology,

읽어보는 도중에 알게 되었어요.

called embodied cognition, which also talks about the same ideas.

또한 다른 아이디어들, 즉

We use our bodies to think;

우리는 생각하기 위해 몸을 사용하고,

단지 뇌를 사용하여 생각하고 움직이기 위해 몸을 사용하는게 아니라

we don't just think with our brains and use our bodies to move,

but our bodies feed back into our brain

몸이 뇌에 피드백을 주어

to generate the way that we behave.

And it was like a lightning bolt.

I went back to my office,

I wrote this paper, which I never really published,

called "Acting Lessons for Artificial Intelligence."

And I even took another month

한 달이 더 지나서

to do what was then the first theater play

인간과 로봇이 함께 공연하는

with a human and a robot acting together.

첫 무대 연극을 해냈습니다.

That's what you saw before with the actors.

바로 전에 보신 배우들과 함께 한 그거예요.

And I thought:

그리고 생각했죠.

How can we make an artificial intelligence model --

어떻게 컴퓨터, 컴퓨터식 모델의

a computer, computational model --

인공지능 모델을 만들어

that will model some of these ideas of improvisation,

즉흥적인 생각을 가지고

위험을 감수하거나 기회를 찾고

of taking risks, of taking chances,

또는 실수도 하는 모델을 만들 수 있을까? 하고요.

even of making mistakes?

Maybe it can make for better robotic teammates.

어쩌면 아마 더 나은 동료 로봇을 만들 수도 있을거에요.

So I worked for quite a long time on these models

저는 이 모델의 연구에 꽤 많은 시간을 보냈고

and I implemented them on a number of robots.

Here you can see a very early example

with the robots trying to use this embodied artificial intelligence

to try to match my movements as closely as possible.

It's sort of like a game.

Let's look at it.

You can see when I psych it out, it gets fooled.

And it's a little bit like what you might see actors do

when they try to mirror each other

to find the right synchrony between them.

And then, I did another experiment,

and I got people off the street to use the robotic desk lamp,

and try out this idea of embodied artificial intelligence.

So, I actually used two kinds of brains for the same robot.

The robot is the same lamp that you saw,

그 로봇은 여러분이 보시기에 같은 전등이지만

그 안에 두가지 뇌를 넣었습니다.

and I put two brains in it.

For one half of the people,

절반의 사람들 대상으로는

I put in a brain that's kind of the traditional,

전통적인 종류의 뇌,

calculated robotic brain.

계산된 로봇 뇌를 넣었습니다.

It waits for its turn, it analyzes everything, it plans.

Let's call it the calculated brain.

The other got more the stage actor, risk-taker brain.

It sometimes acts without knowing everything it has to know.

It sometimes makes mistakes and corrects them.

And I had them do this very tedious task that took almost 20 minutes,

and they had to work together,

somehow simulating, like, a factory job

of repetitively doing the same thing.

What I found is that people actually loved the adventurous robot.

사람들이 모험적인 로봇을 실제로

더 좋아한다는 것을 알아냈지요.

They thought it was more intelligent,

사람들은 그것을 더 똑똑하고,

more committed, a better member of the team,

더 헌신적이고, 팀의 성공에 더 기여하는

contributed to the success of the team more.

동료로써 더 낫다고 생각했어요.

They even called it "he" and "she,"

심지어 로봇을 "그"나 "그녀"라고도 부르더군요.

계산된 뇌에 대해서는 "그것"이라 부르는데 말이죠.

whereas people with the calculated brain

called it "it," and nobody ever called it "he" or "she."

누구도 로봇을 "그"나 "그녀"라고 부른 적이 없었어요.

When they talked about it after the task, with the adventurous brain,

모험적인 뇌와 함께 한

실험이 끝난 후 얘기를 들어보면

they said, "By the end, we were good friends and high-fived mentally."

마지막에는 좋은 친구이자 정신적으로 하이파이브를 나눴다더군요.

Whatever that means.

Sounds painful.

Whereas the people with the calculated brain

said it was just like a lazy apprentice.

그 로봇이 게으른 견습생 같다고 했습니다.

It only did what it was supposed to do and nothing more,

하기로 되어 있는 것만 하고 더 이상은 없었으니까요.

which is almost what people expect robots to do,

바로 사람들이 로봇이 그럴 것이라고 기대하는 대로지요. .

so I was surprised that people had higher expectations of robots

저는 사람들이 로봇에 대해 더 높은 기대를 갖고 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다.

로봇학을 연구하는 사람들이 로봇이 이래야 한다고 생각하는 것보다 더 말이지요.

than what anybody in robotics thought robots should be doing.

And in a way, I thought, maybe it's time --

아마도 19세기에 사람들이

just like method acting changed the way people thought

계획된 동작으로 계산된 연기를 해야한다고

about acting in the 19th century,

from going from the very calculated, planned way of behaving,

생각했던 것으로부터

몰입 연기를 통해 보다 직관적이고 도전적이며

to a more intuitive, risk-taking, embodied way of behaving --

행동의 체화된 방법으로 바꾸었던 것과 같은 시기라고 생각합니다.

maybe it's time for robots to have the same kind of revolution.

로봇에도 같은 종류의

혁명이 일어날 시기일 수도 있겠네요.

A few years later, I was at my next research job at Georgia Tech in Atlanta,

and I was working in a group dealing with robotic musicians.

And I thought, music: that's the perfect place

to look at teamwork, coordination, timing, improvisation --

and we just got this robot playing marimba.

And the marimba, for everybody like me,

저같은 사람들에게는 마림바란

it was this huge, wooden xylophone.

And when I was looking at this,

I looked at other works in human-robot improvisation --

yes, there are other works in human-robot improvisation --

and they were also a little bit like a chess game.

The human would play,

the robot analyzed what was played,

and would improvise their own part.

So, this is what musicians called a call-and-response interaction,

and it also fits very well robots and artificial intelligence.

이 역시 로봇과 인공지능에 아주 잘 어울렸습니다.

But I thought, if I use the same ideas I used in the theater play

사용했던 것과 같은 아이디어를 적용한다면

and in the teamwork studies,

maybe I can make the robots jam together like a band.

밴드처럼 로봇의 즉흥 연주가

가능할 거라고 생각했습니다.

Everybody's riffing off each other, nobody is stopping for a moment.

모두가 서로의 의식의 흐름 속에서 연주하면서 잠시도 멈추지 않는거죠.

And so I tried to do the same things, this time with music,

로봇이 무엇을 연주하여야 할지 모르는 상태에서

where the robot doesn't really know what it's about to play,

같은 실험을 해보았습니다.

it just sort of moves its body and uses opportunities to play,

단지 몸을 움직여

and does what my jazz teacher when I was 17 taught me.

열일곱 살 때 재즈 선생님이

She said, when you improvise,

제가 즉흥 연주를 할 때면

sometimes you don't know what you're doing, and you still do it.

때때로 저 자신이 뭘 하는지 모르고 있어도

여전히 연주하고 있다고 말씀하셨죠.

So I tried to make a robot that doesn't actually know what it's doing,

but is still doing it.

So let's look at a few seconds from this performance,

where the robot listens to the human musician

and improvises.

And then, look how the human musician also responds

to what the robot is doing

and picking up from its behavior,

and at some point can even be surprised by what the robot came up with.

Being a musician is not just about making notes,

otherwise nobody would ever go see a live show.

Musicians also communicate with their bodies,

with other band members, with the audience,

they use their bodies to express the music.

And I thought, we already have a robot musician on stage,

로봇 음악가를 무대에 세워 봤으니

완전히 성숙한 음악가로 못만들 이유가 없다고 생각했지요.

why not make it be a full-fledged musician?

And I started designing a socially expressive head

그리고 전 감정을 표현할 수 있는 로봇 머리를

for the robot.

디자인하기 시작했습니다.

The head doesn’t actually touch the marimba,

그 머리는 마림바를 직접 연주하는게 아니라

it just expresses what the music is like.

음악이 어떤지를 표현할 뿐입니다.

These are some napkin sketches from a bar in Atlanta

that was dangerously located exactly halfway

위험하게도 정확히 제 연구소와

between my lab and my home.

So I spent, I would say, on average, three to four hours a day there.

And I went back to my animation tools and tried to figure out

not just what a robotic musician would look like,

but especially what a robotic musician would move like,

to sort of show that it doesn't like what the other person is playing --

다른 사람이 연주하는 것을 보여주는 게 아니라

and maybe show whatever beat it's feeling at the moment.

그 순간에 느껴지는 박자를 보여줄 수 있는

그런 움직임 말이지요.

So we ended up actually getting the money to build this robot, which was nice.

and we had this rapper come in and do a little jam with the robot.

Here you can see the robot basically responding to the beat.

Notice two things:

one, how irresistible it is to join the robot while it's moving its head.

You kind of want to move your own head when it does it.

And second, even though the rapper is really focused on his iPhone,

두번째는 랩퍼가 아이폰에 집중하고 있지만

as soon as the robot turns to him, he turns back.

로봇이 그에게 돌아서면 그도 돌아보는 거에요.

So even though it's just in the periphery of his vision,

그의 시각의 사각지대에 있다 할지라도

시각의 구석에 있지만 매우 강력하다는 것이죠.

in the corner of his eye, it's very powerful.

우리가 무시할 수 없는 이유는

And the reason is that we can't ignore

실제 물체가 우리 환경에서 움직이기 때문이에요.

physical things moving in our environment.

우리는 그런 부분에 늘 신경 쓰고 있습니다.

We are wired for that.

So if you have a problem --

만역 배우자가 아이폰이나

maybe your partner is looking at their iPhone or smartphone too much --

스마트폰을 뚫어져라 보고 있으면

you might want to have a robot there to get their attention.

이제 마지막 로봇을 소개하지요.

Just to introduce the last robot that we've worked on,

저희가 찾아낸 놀라운

it came out of something surprising that we found:

어떤 것으로부터 작업하고 있는 로봇입니다.

Some point people didn't care about the robot being intelligent,

어떤 면에서 사람들은 로봇이 그렇게 지능적이거나

즉흥 연주를 하거나 들을 수 있거나

able to improvise and listen,

and do all these embodied intelligence things that I spent years developing.

또는 제가 수년 간 개발해온 로봇에 내재된 지능적인 것에 별 관심이 없어요.

They really liked that the robot was enjoying the music.

로봇이 음악을 즐긴다는 것을 좋아하지요. (웃음)

And they didn't say the robot was moving to the music,

로봇이 음악에 맞춰 움직인다고 얘기하지 않고

음악을 즐기고 있다고 말하지요.

they said "enjoying" the music.

And we thought, why don't we take this idea,

그래서 이 아이디어를 받아들여야겠다고 생각하고

and I designed a new piece of furniture.

새로운 개념의 가구를 디자인했습니다.

This time it wasn't a desk lamp, it was a speaker dock,

이번에는 탁상 전등이 아니라 스피커 받침이었어요.

스마트폰을 꽃을 수 있는거죠.

one of those things you plug your smartphone in.

And I thought,

만약 스피커 받침이 사람을 위해

what would happen if your speaker dock didn't just play the music for you,

들려주는게 아니라 실제로 즐긴다면

but would actually enjoy it, too?

무슨 일이 일어날까 생각했습니다. (웃음)

And so again, here are some animation tests from an early stage.

또다시 약간의 애니메이션 실험이

so we can still see robots influence people.

And it's not just fun and games.

단순히 재미나 오락을 위한 것이 아닙니다.

I think one of the reasons I care so much

로봇이 그 몸을 소통하는데 사용하고

about robots that use their body to communicate

움직이기 위해 사용하는 것에 대해

and use their body to move is --

관심을 가지는 이유 중 하나이자

I'm going to let you in on a little secret we roboticists are hiding --

로봇학자들이 숨기고 있는 작은 비밀을 말씀드리자면

is that every one of you is going to be living with a robot

여러분 모두가 인생의 어느 순간에는

at some point in your life.

로봇과 살게 될 것이기 때문이에요.

Somewhere in your future, there will be a robot in your life.

미래에 언젠가는 여러분의 삶에 로봇이 있을거에요.

여러분의 삶이 아니면 여러분의 아이들의 삶에요.

If not in yours, your children's lives.

저는 이 로봇들이 좀 더 유연하고

And I want these robots to be more fluent, more engaging, more graceful

매력 있고 우아하게 움직였으면 합니다.

지금 있는 로봇들보다는요.

than currently they seem to be.

And for that I think maybe robots need to be less like chess players

그것은 로봇이 체스 선수보다

무대 위 배우나 음악가들처럼

and more like stage actors and more like musicians.

되어야 한다고 생각하기 때문이에요.

Maybe they should be able to take chances and improvise.

기회를 잡고 즉흥적인 일을 할 수 있을 겁니다.

Maybe they should be able to anticipate what you're about to do.

또 여러분이 하려는 일을 예상할 수도 있을테고요.

Maybe they even need to be able to make mistakes and correct them,

어쩌면 실수를 하고는 그걸

고쳐야 할지도 모릅니다.

결국 우리는 인간이니까요.

because in the end, we are human.

And maybe as humans, robots that are a little less than perfect

그리고 인간처럼, 약간 부족한 로봇이

are just perfect for us.

우리에게는 완벽한 것이겠지요.
