And while I've tried to make my images not too graphic,

keep in mind that surgeons have a different relationship with blood

than normal people do,

because, after all, what a surgeon does to a patient,

would be a felony.

Surgeons are the tailors, the plumbers,

외과의들은 재단사고, 배관공이고

the carpenters -- some would say the butchers --

목수이면서, 몇몇 사람은 의학계에서 일하는

of the medical world:

푸줏간 주인장이라고도 하죠.

cutting, reshaping, reforming,

자르고, 모양을 바꾸고, 다시 만들고

bypassing, fixing.

새로운 길을 내고, 수정합니다.

But you need to talk about surgical instruments

하지만 외과 기술의 발전과 수술 도구를

and the evolution of surgical technology together.

따로 떼어놓고 얘기할 수는 없습니다.

So in order to give you some kind of a perspective

그래서 여러분들께 수술 로봇들의 예를 들어

of where we are right now

우리가 지금 어느 수준에 와 있는지,

with surgical robots,

그리고 우리는 미래에 어디로 가야하는지

and where we're going to be going in the future,

몇 가지 전망을 보여드리기 위해

I want to give you a little bit of perspective

우리가 어떻게 이런 관점을 가지게 되었는지

of how we got to this point,

좀 설명해 드리려고 합니다.

how we even came to believe

어떻게 우리는 이런 외과수술이 괜찮을거라고,

that surgery was OK,

즉, '이렇게 해도 괜찮을거야' 라고,

that this was something that was possible to do,

잘라서 다시 붙여도 괜찮을 거라고

that this kind of cutting and reforming was OK.

믿게 된 것일까요.

So, a little bit of perspective --

그래서, 약 만여년 전에 있었던 일을

about 10,000 years of perspective.

좀 생각해 보죠.

This is a trephinated skull.

이것은 천공술이 행해진 두개골입니다.

And trephination is simply just cutting a hole in the skull.

천공술은 간단히 말하면 두개골에 구멍을 내는 것을 말하죠.

And many, many hundreds of skulls like this

그리고 이와 비슷한 꽤나 많은 수백개의 두개골이

have been found in archaeological sites

약 5천~1만년 전이라고 밝혀진

all over the world,

dating back five to 10 thousand years.

발굴되고 있습니다.

Five to 10 thousand years! Now imagine this.

5천~1만년 전입니다! 자, 상상해 보세요.

You are a healer in a Stone Age village.

여러분이 석기시대의 한 마을에 사는 치료사라고 해 봅시다.

And you have some guy that you're not quite sure what's wrong with him --

그리고 당신은 어디가 아픈건지 잘 모르겠는 어떤 청년과 마주했습니다.

Oliver Sacks is going to be born way in the future.

He's got some seizure disorder. And you don't understand this.

But you think to yourself,

"I'm not quite sure what's wrong with this guy.

Now that is surgical thinking.

그것이 바로 외과적인 사고방식입니다.

Now we've got the dawn of interventional surgery here.

지금 우리는 중재수술(문제부위를 직접 수술하는 것이 아니라 간접적인 방식으로 문제 부분을 치료하는 외과수술의 방법)의 여명기를 얘기하는 겁니다.

What is astonishing about this is,

놀라운 점은

even though we don't know really how much of this

was intended to be religious,

어느 정도로 치료행위라고 생각해서 한 것인지는

or how much of it was intended to be therapeutic,

알 수 없는 일이지만, 우리가 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은

what we can tell is that these patients lived!

그 환자들이 (수술 후에도) 살아있었다는 겁니다!

Judging by the healing on the borders of these holes,

수술한 구멍의 가장자리를 살펴본 것으로 판단하면

they lived days, months, years following trephination.

수술받은 사람들이 천공술 후에 수일, 수개월, 수년을 더 살았습니다.

And so what we are seeing is evidence

of a refined technique

that was being handed down over thousands and thousands of years,

all over the world.

This arose independently at sites everywhere

that had no communication to one another.

We really are seeing the dawn of interventional surgery.

Now we can fast forward many thousands of years

into the Bronze Age and beyond.

And we see new refined tools coming out.

새롭고 정교한 도구들이 보입니다.

But surgeons in these eras are a little bit more conservative

하지만 이 시기 외과의들은 대담하게 천공술을 선보였던 선배들 보다

than their bold, trephinating ancestors.

훨씬 더 보수적입니다.

These guys confined their surgery

이 사람들은 확실이 얕은 상처에만

to fairly superficial injuries.

And surgeons were tradesmen,

rather than physicians.

This persisted all the way into and through the Renaissance.

That may have saved the writers,

but it didn't really save the surgeons terribly much.

They were still a mistrusted lot.

Surgeons still had a bit of a PR problem,

because the landscape was dominated

by the itinerant barber surgeon.

These were folks that traveled from village to village, town to town,

doing surgery sort of as a form of performance art.

Because we were in the age before anesthesia,

the agony of the patient

is really as much of the public spectacle

as the surgery itself.

One of the most famous of these guys, Frere Jacques,

shown here doing a lithotomy --

which is the removal of the bladder stone,

one of the most invasive surgeries they did at the time --

had to take less than two minutes.

You had to have quite a flair for the dramatic,

and be really, really quick.

And so here you see him doing a lithotomy.

And he is credited with doing over 4,000 of these public surgeries,

wandering around in Europe,

which is an astonishing number,

Until anesthesia, the absence of sensation.

With the demonstration of the Morton Ether Inhaler

1847년에 매사추세츠의 종합병원에서

at the Mass. General in 1847,

a whole new era of surgery was ushered in.

외과수술의 새시대가 열렸습니다.

Anesthesia gave surgeons the freedom to operate.

마취는 외과의사들이 수술을 할 수 있는 자유를 부여했습니다.

Anesthesia gave them the freedom to experiment,

그들이 실험할 수 있는 자유를 줘서

to start to delve deeper into the body.

외과수술은 사람 체내 깊숙한 곳까지 수술할 수 있도록 했습니다.

This was truly a revolution in surgery.

이는 정말 외과 수술의 혁명이었죠.

But there was a pretty big problem with this.

After these very long, painstaking operations,

attempting to cure things they'd never been able to touch before,

the patients died.

They died of massive infection.

Surgery didn't hurt anymore,

but it killed you pretty quickly.

수술이 환자를 빨리 죽여버렸죠.

And infection would continue to claim a majority of surgical patients

마취 이후 또 한 번의 외과수술 혁명이 일어나기 전까지

until the next big revolution in surgery,

감염이 결정적인 원인이 되어 죽는 환자는 계속 생겼습니다.

which was aseptic technique.

이어진 혁명은 무균 기술이었습니다.

Joseph Lister was aepsis's,

죠셉 리스터는 무균술이나

or sterility's, biggest advocate,

멸균술을 강하게 주장했었지만

to a very very skeptical bunch of surgeons.

But eventually they did come around.

The Mayo brothers came out to visit Lister in Europe.

And they came back to their American clinic and they said

그리고 미국에 있는 자신들의 병원으로 돌아가서

they had learned it was as important to wash your hands

수술 후에 손을 씻는 것 만큼이나 수술 전에 손을 씻는 것이

before doing surgery

중요하다는 것을 배웠다고

as it was to wash up afterwards. (Laughter)

사람들에게 알렸습니다.

Something so simple.

너무나 간단하지만

And yet, operative mortality dropped profoundly.

수술하다 죽는 경우는 급격히 줄어들었습니다.

These surgeries were actually now being effective.

이러한 수술법은 사실 현재도 매우 효과가 있습니다.

With the patient insensitive to pain,

환자가 수술중 고통을 느끼지 못하게 되고

and a sterile operating field

all bets were off, the sky was the limit.

You could now start doing surgery everywhere,

지금은 어떤 장기도 수술이 가능합니다.

on the gut, on the liver,

창자, 간,

on the heart, on the brain.

Transplantation: you could take an organ out of one person,

이식도 되죠. 사람에게서 장기를 꺼내

you could put it in another person, and it would work.

다른 사람에게 넣을 수 있는데, 그렇게 이식된 장기가 제대로 동작합니다.

Surgeons didn't have a problem with respectability anymore;

외과의들은 더이상 신용에 문제가 없었습니다.

they had become gods.

그들은 신과 같은 존재가 되었죠.

The era of the "big surgeon, big incision" had arrived,

"훌륭한 외과의는 수술창이 크다"고 말하는 시대가 온 것이죠.

but at quite a cost,

하지만 그에 따른 댓가도 있었습니다.

because they are saving lives,

외과의가 생명을 구하긴 하지만

but not necessarily quality of life,

삶의 질까지 보장하진 않습니다.

because healthy people don't usually need surgery,

건강한 사람은 수술을 받을 필요가 없으니까요.

and unhealthy people have a very hard time recovering from a cut like that.

그리고 환자들은 수술을 위해 짼 커다란 상처 때문에 아주 힘든 회복기를 보냅니다.

The question had to be asked,

그래서 이런 의문이 나오게 되었는데,

"Well, can we do these same surgeries

"음, 그렇다면 조금만 째고도

but through little incisions?"

같은 수술을 할 수는 없을까?"

Laparoscopy is doing this kind of surgery:

복강경 수술이 이와 같은 수술을 합니다.

surgery with long instruments through small incisions.

기다란 도구를 가지고 작은 구멍을 통해 수술을 하죠.

And it really changed the landscape of surgery.

그리고 복강경 수술은 실제로 외과수술의 관점을 바꿨습니다.

Some of the tools for this had been around for a hundred years,

복강경 수술에 사용 가능한 몇몇 도구들은 백여년 전부터 있었습니다.

but it had only been used as a diagnostic technique

하지만 1980년대 이전에는 진단을 위한 도구로

until the 1980s,

사용되었습니다.

when there was changes in camera technologies and things like that,

that allowed this to be done for real operations.

So what you see -- this is now the first surgical image --

as we're coming down the tube, this is a new entry into the body.

It looks very different from what you're expecting surgery to look like.

여러분들이 수술이라면 이렇겠지 싶었던 것과는 매우 다르게 보입니다.

We bring instruments in,

옆에 두개의 분리된 구멍으로부터

from two separate cuts in the side,

그 안으로 수술기구를 집어넣고,

and then you can start manipulating tissue.

그 다음 조직을 다루기 시작합니다.

Within 10 years of the first gallbladder surgeries

처음으로 쓸개 수술을 복강경으로 시작한지

being done laparoscopically,

10년도 안 되어서

a majority of gallbladder surgeries

대부분의 쓸개(담낭) 수술은

were being done laparoscopically --

복강경 수술로 이루어지게 되었습니다.

truly a pretty big revolution.

정말 엄청난 혁명이죠.

But there were casualties of this revolution.

하지만 이러한 혁명의 피해자가 있었습니다.

These techniques were a lot harder to learn

이런 복강경 기술은 사람들이 예상하는 것 이상으로

than people had anticipated.

굉장히 익히기 힘듭니다.

The learning curve was very long.

기술 습득에 시간이 매우 많이 걸렸죠.

And during that learning curve the complications went quite a bit higher.

거기다 해당 기술을 익히는 동안 다양한 문제점이 발생합니다.

Surgeons had to give up their 3D vision.

외과의사들은 (수술부위를)입체적으로 볼 수 없게 되었습니다.

They had to give up their wrists.

손목도 포기해야 했죠.(주:수술 도구를 다루는데 손목이 매우 아프다는 뜻)

They had to give up intuitive motion in the instruments.

도구를 사용하는데 있어서 직관적인 움직임도 포기해야 했구요.

This surgeon has over 3,000 hours of laparoscopic experience.

이 외과의사는 복강경 수술을 3,000시간 넘게 해 본 경험많은 사람입니다.

Now this is a particularly frustrating placement of the needle.

지금 이 장면을 보시면 바늘 하나도 제대로 잡지 못하나 싶어서 특히 실망스러울 겁니다.

But this is hard.

하지만 이건 굉장히 어렵습니다.

And one of the reasons why it is so hard

이게 왜 그렇게 힘든가를 살펴보면

is because the external ergonomics are terrible.

수술 도구에 인체공학적인 고려가 아예 없거든요.

You've got these long instruments, and you're working off your centerline.

이렇게 긴 수술 도구를 갖고 있으니 신체 중심에서 떨어진 곳에서 도구를 조작하게 됩니다.

And the instruments are essentially working backwards.

거기다 도구들은 본질적으로 손의 움직임과 반대 방향으로 움직입니다.

So what you need to do, to take the capability of your hand,

그래서 여러분의 손의 기능을 그대로

and put it on the other side of that small incision,

조그마한 수술 구멍 건너편 수술할 자리로 옮기기 위해서는

is you need to put a wrist on that instrument.

도구자체에 손목까지 끼울 필요가 있는 것이죠.

And so -- I get to talk about robots --

the da Vinci robot

다 빈치 로봇이라는 건데요

put just that wrist on the other side of that incision.

손 역할을 할 관절을 수술을 위해 절개한 구멍 저쪽으로 집어넣습니다.

And so here you're seeing the operation of this wrist.

여기 기계 관절의 동작이 보이죠.

And now, in contrast to the laparoscopy,

이제는 바로 전에 보여드렸던 복강경 수술과는 반대로

you can precisely place the needle in your instruments,

아주 정교하게 도구를 사용해서 바늘을 잡을 수 있게 되었고

and you can pass it all the way through

어느 방향으로도 바늘을 통과시킬 수 있고

and follow it in a trajectory.

바늘을 좇아 예상하는 궤적을 따라갈 수 있습니다.

And the reason why this becomes so much easier

is -- you can see on the bottom --

아래에서 보시는 것처럼

the hands are making the motions,

손이 어떤 동작을 하면

and the instruments are following those motions exactly.

도구가 그 동작을 정확히 따라하기 때문입니다.

Now, what you put between those instruments and those hands,

여기서 이러한 도구들과 손 사이에 놓인 것은

is a large, fairly complicated robot.

크고 꽤 복잡한 로봇입니다.

The surgeon is sitting at a console,

and controlling the robot with these controllers.

And the robot is moving these instruments around,

and powering them, down inside the body.

You have a 3D camera, so you get a 3D view.

And since this was introduced in 1999,

1999년에 이와 같은 로봇 시스템이 소개된 뒤로

a lot of these robots have been out

전립선 절제 수술같은 외과 수술에

and being used for surgical procedures like a prostatectomy,

사용되고 있습니다.

which is a prostate deep in the pelvis,

전립선이 골반 깊숙한 곳에 위치하고

and it requires fine dissection

이걸 수술하려면 정밀한 절개가 요구되며

and delicate manipulation

좋은 결과를 얻기 위해서는

to be able to get a good surgical outcome.

매우 섬세한 조작이 필요하기 때문이죠.

You can also sew bypass vessels directly onto a beating heart

가슴을 열어 제끼지 않고도 뛰고 있는 심장의

without cracking the chest.

우회 혈관을 봉합할 수도 있습니다.

This is all done in between the ribs.

이런 수술은 모두 갈비뼈 사이를 통해서 이뤄집니다.

And you can go inside the heart itself

그리고 심장 안으로 들어가서 안에서

and repair the valves from the inside.

심장 내부의 판막을 고치는 것도 가능하죠.

You've got these technologies -- thank you --

이미 이러한 기술이 있습니다. -- 감사합니다 --

And so you might say, "Wow this is really cool!

이제 여러분들은 "와, 이거 진짜 죽이는데! 그런데 그리 대단한 물건이 있는데

So, smartypants, why isn't all surgery being done this way?"

왜 모든 수술을 그런 식으로 하지 않는거지?" 라고 말할지도 모릅니다.

And there are some reasons, some good reasons.

여기에는 몇 가지 이유가 있습니다. 꽤나 확실한 이유죠.

And cost is one of them.

가격이 그 가운데 하나구요.

I talked about the large, complicated robot.

제가 로봇이 크고 복잡하다고 했지요?

With all its bells and whistles, one of those robots

이런 모든 부가기능이 달린 로봇은

will cost you about as much as a solid gold surgeon.

순 금으로 만든 외과의사 모형만큼 비쌉니다.

More useful than a solid gold surgeon,

금으로 만든 외과의사 모형 보다야 훨씬 쓸만하지만요.

but, still, it's a fairly big capital investment.

그렇지만, 여전히 이런 로봇을 사용하는 것은 상당히 큰 재정적 투자입니다.

But once you've got it, your procedure costs do come down.

But there are other barriers.

So something like a prostatectomy --

전립선 절제술을 예로 들면,

the prostate is small, and it's in one spot,

and you can set your robot up very precisely

그리고 전립선이 있는 그 곳에

to work in that one spot.

수술용 로봇을 매우 정밀하게 세팅할 수 있습니다.

And so it's perfect for something like that.

수술에 아주 완벽한 상황이죠.

And in fact if you, or anyone you know,

사실 여러분이나 여러분이 아는 누군가가

had their prostate taken out in the last couple of years,

요 몇년 사이에 전립선 수술을 받았다면

chances are it was done with one of these systems.

이런 시스템으로 수술을 받았을지도 모릅니다.

But if you need to reach more places than just one,

하지만 한 군데 이상을 수술해야 한다면

you need to move the robot.

로봇을 움직여야만 합니다.

And you need to put some new incisions in there.

그리고 절개창도 새로 내야 하고

And you need to re-set it up.

장비는 모두 다시 설정해야하죠.

And then you need to add some more ports, and more.

또, 여러 필요한 부분을 더 장착하고, 구멍도 더 뚫고요.

And the problem is it gets time-consuming, and cumbersome.

문제는 이런 모든 일이 시간이 많이 걸리는데다 성가시다는 겁니다.

And for that reason there are many surgeries

그런 이유 때문에 많은 외과 수술을

that just aren't being done with the da Vinci.

다 빈치 로봇으로 하지 않는 거지요.

So we had to ask the question, "Well how do we fix that?"

그래서 이렇게 물어봐야 합니다. "그럼 어떻게 더 낫게 고칠 수 없을까?"

What if we could change it so that we didn't have to re-set up

만약 우리가 이런 로봇을 개량해서 다른 장소로 옮기고 싶어질 때마다

each time we wanted to move somewhere different?

매번 장치를 다시 설정하지 않아도 된다면?

What if we could bring all the instruments

만약 우리가 모든 장치와 도구들을

in together in one place?

한 곳에 장착할 수 있다면 어떨까요?

How would that change the capabilities of the surgeon?

그렇게 개량하면 외과의사의 능력은 어떻게 바뀌게 될까요?

And how would that change the experience for the patient?

그리고 환자는 어떤 변화를 겪게 될까요?

Now, to do that,

자, 그렇게 하려면

we need to be able to bring a camera

이전에 복강경 수술에서 보셨던 튜브처럼

and instruments in together through one small tube,

카메라와 수술 도구들을 하나의 자그마한 튜브에

like that tube you saw in the laparoscopy video.

모아서 하나로 만들어야 합니다.

Or, not so coincidentally, like a tube like this.

So what's going to come out of that tube

is the debut of this new technology,

This is the camera, and three instruments.

이것은 카메라하고 수술기구가 3개 달린 겁니다.

And as you see it come out,

그리고 이것을 보시는 것처럼 밖으로 나오게 해서

in order to actually be able to do anything useful,

사실상 필요한 동작 아무것이나 할 수 있습니다.

it can't all stay clustered up like this.

이와 같이 하나로 계속 뭉쳐 있기만 하는 것이 아니죠.

It has to be able to come off of the centerline

중심선에서 벌어져 나와

and then be able to work back toward that centerline.

중심선을 따라 뒷쪽으로도 동작이 가능해야 합니다.

He's a cheeky little devil.

아주 작고 맹랑한 녀석이죠.

But what this lets you do

이 녀석으로

is gives you that all-important traction,

조직을 잡아당기거나 밀어서

and counter-traction,

수술을 하는 동안 필요한,

so that you can dissect, so that you can sew,

조직을 자르고 봉합하는 등의

so that you can do all the things that you need to do,

중요한 임무 대부분을

all the surgical tasks.

처리할 수 있습니다.

But it's all coming in through one incision.

이러한 일들이 절개 한 번으로 이뤄집니다.

It's not so simple.

간단한 기술은 아닙니다.

But it's worth it for the freedom that this gives us

하지만 이 로봇덕에 우리가 얻는

as we're going around.

편리함을 고려하면 사용할 가치가 있죠.

For the patient, however,

환자를 위한다면 이건 아주 명백합니다.

it's transparent. This is all they're going to see.

이 작은 구멍이 환자에게 남는 흔적의 전부니까요.

It's very exciting to think where we get to go with this.

이것을 가지고 우리가 어디까지 할 수 있을지 생각해보면 아주 신납니다.

We get to write the script of the next revolution in surgery.

우리는 외과 수술분야에서 새로운 혁명의 장을 쓰게 될 것입니다.

As we take these capabilities, and we get to go to the next places,

이러한 기술을 통해서 우리는 새로운 영역으로 가게 될 것이고

we get to decide what our new surgeries are going to be.

우리는 새로운 외과수술의 미래를 결정하게 될 것입니다.

And I think to really get the rest of the way

그리고 제가 생각하기에 이런 혁명에 있어서

in that revolution,

추가적으로 생각할 부분은

we need to not just take our hands in in new ways,

우리가 손의 역할을 할 새로운 도구를 체내에 넣은 것처럼

we also need to take our eyes in in new ways.

우리는 눈의 역할을 할 새로운 방법을 강구해야 한다는 거죠.

We need to see beyond the surface.

우리는 겉으로 보이는 그 이상을 봐야만 합니다.

We need to be able to guide what we're cutting

우리가 자를 부위를 더 나은 방식으로

in a much better way.

판단할 수 있어야 합니다.

This is a cancer surgery.

이건 암 수술의 한 장면인데요

One of the problems with this,

이 수술의 문제점은

even for surgeons who've been looking at this a lot,

여러분은 당연히 볼 수 없구요, 심지어 이런 수술장면을 많이 봐 온

is you can't see the cancer,

전문 외과의들 조차도 암을 보기 힘들다는 겁니다.

especially when it's hidden below the surface.

특히나 표면 아래에 암이 숨어있다면 더 그렇죠.

And so what we're starting to do

그래서 우리가 하려고 하는 일은

is we're starting to inject specially designed markers

특별히 고안된 마커(주:특정 물질을 표시할 수 있는 물질)를

into the bloodstream that will target the cancer.

암이 있는 곳으로 향하는 혈류속에 주입하는 것입니다.

It will go, bind to the cancer.

마커는 암으로 가서 암과 결합합니다.

And we can make those markers glow.

그리고 우리는 그 마커가 발광하도록 만들어

And we can take special cameras,

특수한 카메라를 써서

and we can look at it.

암을 볼 수 있죠.

Now we know where we need to cut,

이제 암이 표면 아래에 있는 경우에도

even when it's below the surface.

어느 부위를 잘라야만 하는지 압니다.

We can take these markers and we can inject them in a tumor site.

이런 마커를 가져다 종양부위에 주입할 수 있습니다.

And we can follow where they flow out from that tumor site,

그리고 마커가 종양부위로부터 흘러나와 어디로 가는지 추적하여

so we can see the first places where that cancer might travel.

그 암이 어디로 제일 먼저 전이될지 볼 수 있습니다.

We can inject these dyes into the bloodstream,

우리는 이 염료들을 혈류안으로 주입하여

so that when we do a new vessel

심장의 협착부위를 우회하는 수술에서

and we bypass a blockage on the heart,

새로 연결한 우회혈관이 잘 연결되었는지

we can see if we actually made the connection,

직접 눈으로 확인한 후에

before we close that patient back up again --

환자의 수술을 종료할 수 있습니다.

something that we haven't been able to do

이전에는 방사능을 쓰는 방법 아니고선

without radiation before.

불가능 했던 일이죠.

We can light up tumors

우리는 이 신장 종양처럼

like this kidney tumor,

종양부위만 빛나게 하여

so that you can exactly see where the boundary is

제거해야할 종양 부위와 남겨야할 신장의 경계를

between the kidney tumor and the kidney you want to leave behind,

정확하게 눈으로 보고 확인하는 것이 가능하게 되었습니다.

or the liver tumor and the liver you want to leave behind.

또는 제거해야 할 간의 종양과 남겨놓아야 할 간을 구분하는 것도 가능하죠.

And we don't even need to confine ourselves

그리고 우리가 꼭 이런 거시적인 영상에만 국한할

to this macro vision.

필요가 없습니다.

We have flexible microscopic probes

우리는 구부러지는 미세탐침을

that we can bring down into the body.

신체의 더 깊숙한 곳으로 가져갈 수 있습니다.

And we can look at cells directly.

그리고 그것으로 세포를 직접 볼 수 있어요.

I'm looking at nerves here. So these are nerves you see, down on the bottom,

여기서는 신경세포가 보이네요. 지금 보시는 것이 신경입니다. 여기 아래쪽에요.

and the microscope probe that's being held by the robotic hand, up at the top.

위에 보이는 로봇의 손에 들려있는 것이 미세탐침이구요.

So this is all very prototypey at this point.

현 시점에서는 아주 초기 버전이지만,

But you care about nerves, if you are a surgical patient.

여러분들이 수술을 받아야 할 환자라면 신경에 관심이 많을 겁니다.

Because they let you keep continence,

왜냐하면 이런 기술들이 수술 후에 배변을 억제하고

bladder control, and sexual function after surgery,

방광을 조절해서 소변을 지리지 않게 하고, 성기능을 유지하게 해 줄테니까요.

all of which is generally fairly important to the patient.

이 모든 것들이 환자에게는 일반적으로 상당히 중요한 것입니다.

So, with the combination of these technologies

우리는 이 모든 기술을 종합적으로 사용하여

we can reach it all, and we can see it all.

신체 어느 부위도 수술할 수 있고, 어디라도 볼 수 있습니다.

We can heal the disease.

우리는 질병을 치료할 수 있습니다.

And we can leave the patient whole and intact

그리고 우리는 환자가 수술 후에도 수술 전처럼

and functional afterwards.

온전하고 정상적인 기능을 수행하게 할 수 있습니다.

Now, I've talked about the patient

지금껏 저는 환자가 이 강연장 밖 어딘가에 있는

as if the patient is, somehow, someone abstract

가상의 누군가인것처럼

outside this room.

얘기해 왔습니다.

And that is not the case.

이것은 하나의 특정 사례를 얘기한 것이 아닙니다.

Many of you, all of you maybe,

여러분 가운데 많은 분들이, 아니 여러분 모두가

will at some point, or have already, faced a diagnosis of cancer,

미래의 어떤 시점에는, 혹은 이미 과거에 암, 심장질환,

or heart disease, or some organ dysfunction

또는 다른 장기부전 때문에 의사를 만나

that's going to buy you a date with a surgeon.

외과와 관련된 상담을 받았었을지도 모르겠네요.

And when you get to that point --

그리고 그런 상황이 오면

I mean, these maladies don't care

음, 그러니까 이런 질병들은

how many books you've written,

여러분이 얼마나 책을 많이 썼는지,

how many companies you've started,

얼마나 많은 회사를 거느리고 있는지,

that Nobel Prize you have yet to win,

곧 노벨상을 수상하기로 했는지,

how much time you planned to spend with your children.

아이와 얼마나 많은 시간을 함께 하려고 했는지를 가려서 오지 않습니다.

These maladies come for us all.

이런 병은 우리 모두가 걸릴 수 있죠.

And the prospect I'm offering you, of an easier surgery ...

제가 지금까지 외과수술이 보다 쉬어질 거라고 알려드렸는데

is that going to make that diagnosis any less terrifying?

덕분에 여러분들이 병에 걸렸다는 진단을 받아도 좀 덜 두려울까요?

I'm not sure I really even want it to.

제가 정말 그렇게 되길 원하고 있는건진 잘 모르겠어요.

Because facing your own mortality

왜냐하면 다른 일과는 달리 자신의 죽음과 마주하는 것은

causes a re-evaluation of priorities,

삶에 있어서 우선순위를 재평가하게 하고

and a realignment of what your goals are in life, unlike anything else.

인생에서 당신의 목표가 무엇인지 다시 생각하게 하니까요.

And I would never want to deprive you of that epiphany.

저는 이런 본질에 가까운 통찰을 여러분에게서 빼앗고 싶지는 않네요.

What I want instead,

대신 제가 원하는 것은

is for you to be whole, intact,

여러분이 (그런 통찰을 바탕으로) 무엇인가를 해야겠다고 결정한 후

and functional enough to go out and save the world,

밖으로 나가서 세상을 구할 수 있을만큼

after you've decided you need to do it.

병이 있기 전과 다름없이 건강을 되찾도록 하는 것입니다.

And that is my vision for your future.

그것이 여러분의 미래를 위한 저의 비전입니다.
