When I was a child, I knew I had superpowers.

not so religious but laid-back, fairly liberal.

지나치게 종교적이지 않았고 편안하고 꽤 자유로웠죠.

And of course, I could understand

물론 백인들의 감정들도

and relate to the feelings of white people.

이해하고 공감할 수 있었습니다.

The white Norwegians of my country.

조국인 노르웨이의 백인들을요.

You know, white, brown, whatever --

백인, 갈색 피부, 무엇이든지

I loved them all.

전 그들 모두를 사랑합니다.

I understood them all,

even if they didn't always understand each other;

they were all my people.

My father, though, was always really worried.

He kept saying that even with the best education,

I was not going to get a fair shake.

I would still face discrimination, according to him.

And that the only way to be accepted by white people

would be to become famous.

Now, mind you, he had this conversation with me when I was seven years old.

아버지가 이 말을 하셨을 때 저는 고작 7살이었죠.

So while I'm seven years old, he said,

그러니까 제가 7살일때 아버지는 말씀하셨어요.

"Look, so it's either got to be sports, or it's got to be music."

"자, 그러니까 운동이나 음악, 둘 중 하나여야 해."

He didn't know anything about sports -- bless him -- so it was music.

다행히 아버지는 운동에 관해 아무 것도 모르셔서 저는 음악을 배우게 되었죠.

So when I was seven years old, he gathered all my toys, all my dolls,

7살 때 아버지는 저의 모든 장난감과 인형들을 모아서 버리셨어요.

and he threw them all away.

In exchange he gave me a crappy little Casio keyboard and --

대신 작고 형편없는 카시오 키보드를 주시고는

Yeah. And singing lessons.

네. 노래를 배웠죠.

And he forced me, basically, to practice for hours and hours every single day.

아버지는 매일 매일 몇 시간씩 연습을 시켰어요.

Very quickly, he also had me performing for larger and larger audiences,

얼마 되지 않아 점점 더 많은 청중들 앞에서 공연을 하게 하셨고

and bizarrely, I became almost a kind of poster child

for Norwegian multiculturalism.

I felt very proud, of course.

Because even the newspapers at this point

I know they sound kind of awful,

but I absolutely love them.

They're basically these little salty licorice bits in the shape of feet.

And now that I say it out loud, I realize how terrible that sounds,

but be that as it may, I absolutely love them.

So on my way into the store,

가게를 들어가는 길에

there was this grown white guy in the doorway blocking my way.

문 앞에는 저를 막고 있는 백인 성인 남성이 있었죠.

So I tried to walk around him, and as I did that, he stopped me

돌아서 가려는데 저를 막더니

and he was staring at me,

and he spit in my face, and he said,

"Get out of my way

"내 길을 막지마.

you little black bitch, you little Paki bitch,

I was absolutely horrified.

I was staring at him.

I was too afraid to wipe the spit off my face,

even as it was mixing with my tears.

I remember looking around, hoping that any minute now,

a grown-up is going to come and make this guy stop.

기대하며 주위를 둘러보았던 기억이 납니다.

But instead, people kept hurrying past me and pretended not to see me.

하지만 사람들은 저를 서둘러 지나가기만 했죠. 못 본 척 하면서요.

I was very confused because I was thinking, well,

너무 혼란스러워하며 생각했어요.

"My white people, come on! Where are they? What's going on?

"내 백인 친구들, 다들 어디 있는거지? 무슨 일인거지?

How come they're not coming and rescuing me?"

어떻게 와서 날 구해주지 않을 수 있지?"

So, needless to say, I didn't buy the sweets.

당연히 저는 그날 사탕을 사지 않았어요.

I just ran home as fast as I could.

최대한 빨리 집으로 뛰어와서

Things were still OK, though, I thought.

그래, 이제 괜찮아 라고 생각했어요.

As time went on, the more successful I became,

시간이 지날수록 저는 더 유명해져갔고

I eventually started also attracting harassment from brown people.

급기야 갈색 피부를 가진 사람들조차 저를 괴롭히기 시작했어요.

Some men in my parent's community felt that it was unacceptable

부모님이 속한 지역사회의 어떤 남자들은 여성이 음악에 종사하며

and dishonorable for a woman to be involved in music

미디어에 등장하는 것은

and to be so present in the media.

받아들일 수 없는 불명예라고 생각했죠.

So very quickly, I was starting to become attacked at my own concerts.

I remember one of the concerts, I was onstage, I lean into the audience

and the last thing I see is a young brown face,

and the next thing I know is some sort of chemical is thrown in my eyes

and I remember I couldn't really see and my eyes were watering

but I kept singing anyway.

I was spit in the face in the streets of Oslo, this time by brown men.

They even tried to kidnap me at one point.

어느 시점에 이르러서는 절 납치 하려고도 했어요.

The death threats were endless.

살해 협박은 끝도 없이 많았고요.

I remember one older bearded guy stopped me in the street one time,

한 번은 수염을 기른 늙은 남자가 길가에서 저를 막고는

and he said, "The reason I hate you so much

"내가 너를 너무 싫어하는 이유는

is because you make our daughters think

내 딸들로 하여금 걔들이 원하면 뭐든 할 수 있다고

they can do whatever they want."

생각하게 만들기 때문이지." 라고 하더군요.

A younger guy warned me to watch my back.

한 젊은 남자는 뒤를 조심하라고 경고했죠.

He said music is un-Islamic and the job of whores,

음악은 이슬람에 반하는 것이고 창녀나 하는 거라며 제가 계속 음악을 하면

and if you keep this up, you are going to be raped

절 강간하고 제 창자를 꺼내 잘라

and your stomach will be cut out so that another whore like you will not be born.

저와 같은 창녀가 태어나지 않게 하겠다고 했어요.

Again, I was so confused.

저는 너무 혼란스러웠어요.

I couldn't understand what was going on.

무슨 일이 일어나는 건지 모르겠더라고요.

My brown people now starting to treat me like this -- how come?

갈색 피부를 가진 사람들이 나를 이렇게 대하다니, 무슨 일이지?

Instead of bridging the worlds, the two worlds,

두 세계를 이어주는 다리가 되어주긴 커녕

I felt like I was falling between my two worlds.

그 두 세계 사이로 떨어져 버린 그런 기분이 들었어요.

I suppose, for me, spit was kryptonite.

그들이 뱉은 침이 저에게는 크립토나이트라고 생각했어요.

So by the time I was 17 years old,

제가 17살이 되던 해에도

the death threats were endless, and the harassment was constant.

살해 협박은 끝이 없었고 괴롭힘 또한 계속되었죠.

It got so bad, at one point my mother sat me down and said,

상황이 너무 심각해지자 어느 시점에 어머니는 저를 앉히고 말씀하셨죠.

"Look, we can no longer protect you, we can no longer keep you safe,

"자, 우린 더 이상 널 안전하게 보호해 줄 수가 없구나.

so you're going to have to go."

So I bought a one-way ticket to London, I packed my suitcase and I left.

저는 런던행 표를 편도로 끊고 짐을 싸 떠났어요.

My biggest heartbreak at that point was that nobody said anything.

그 당시 가장 슬펐던 건 아무도 제게 그 어떤 말도 해주지 않았다는 거예요.

I had a very public exit from Norway.

제가 노르웨이를 떠나는 것을 많은 사람들이 알았어요.

My brown people, my white people -- nobody said anything.

갈색 피부 사람들, 나의 백인들. 누구도 아무 말도 하지 않았죠.

Nobody said, "Hold on, this is wrong.

Support this girl, protect this girl, because she is one of us."

Nobody said that.

Instead, I felt like -- you know at the airport,

on the baggage carousel you have these different suitcases

going around and around,

and there's always that one suitcase left at the end,

the one that nobody wants, the one that nobody comes to claim.

I felt like that.

제가 바로 그런 기분이었어요.

I'd never felt so alone. I'd never felt so lost.

너무나 외롭고 혼자 남은 듯한 기분이었어요.

So, after coming to London, I did eventually resume my music career.

런던으로 와서는 결국 다시 음악 일을 시작했어요.

Different place, but unfortunately the same old story.

장소는 달랐지만 안타깝게도 같은 일이 벌어지더군요.

I remember a message sent to me saying that I was going to be killed

저를 살해하겠다는 메시지를 받았는데

and that rivers of blood were going to flow

제 피가 흘러 강을 만들고

and that I was going to be raped many times before I died.

죽기 전까지 수 차례 강간을 당할 거라고 했죠.

By this point, I have to say,

솔직히 말씀드리면 이 시점에

I was actually getting used to messages like this,

저는 사실 이런 메시지를 받는데 익숙해지고 있었어요.

but what became different was that now they started threatening my family.

전과 다른게 있다면 이제 가족들까지 협박을 하기 시작했다는 거예요.

So once again, I packed my suitcase, I left music and I moved to the US.

그래서 전 또 다시 짐을 싸 음악을 그만두고 미국으로 건너오게 됩니다.

I'd had enough.

충분히 당했어요.

I didn't want to have anything to do with this anymore.

음악이랑 어떻게든 더 이상 얽히고 싶지 않았어요.

And I was certainly not going to be killed for something

심지어 제 꿈도 아닌 아버지의 선택이었던 음악으로 인해

that wasn't even my dream -- it was my father's choice.

죽임을 당하고 싶지는 않았어요.

So I kind of got lost.

I kind of fell apart.

But I decided that what I wanted to do

is spend the next however many years of my life

supporting young people

and to try to be there in some small way,

whatever way that I could.

I started volunteering for various organizations

저는 유럽의 젊은 무슬림들과 함께 일하는

that were working with young Muslims inside of Europe.

And, to my surprise, what I found was

so many of these young people were suffering and struggling.

이런 젊은이들이 고통받으며 힘겹게 싸우고 있다는걸 알게 되었죠.

They were facing so many problems with their families and their communities

그들의 가족과 그들이 속한 사회에서 너무도 많은 문제에 직면해있었는데

who seemed to care more about their honor and their reputation

자녀들의 인생과 행복보다는

than the happiness and the lives of their own kids.

그들 스스로의 명예와 평판을 더 중요하게 생각하는 사람들이었죠.

I started feeling like maybe I wasn't so alone, maybe I wasn't so weird.

그 때 난 혼자가 아니고 내가 이상한게 아닐 거란 생각이 들었어요.

Maybe there are more of my people out there.

밖에는 나와 같은 사람들이 더 많이 있을 거라고요.

The thing is, what most people don't understand

사람들이 이해를 못하는 점은

is that there are so many of us growing up in Europe

유럽 내에는 저희 같이

who are not free to be ourselves.

나 자신일 수 없는 사람들이 너무나도 많습니다.

We're not allowed to be who we are.

우리는 자기가 되고자 하는 사람이 될 수 없으며

We are not free to marry

결혼도 맘대로 할 수 없고

or to be in relationships with people that we choose.

우리가 선택한 사람들과 관계를 갖는 것도 자유롭지 않죠.

We can't even pick our own career.

우리는 직업조차 스스로 정할 수가 없어요.

This is the norm in the Muslim heartlands of Europe.

이것이 바로 유럽 심장부에서의 무슬림들의 기준이에요.

Even in the freest societies in the world, we're not free.

이 세상에서 가장 자유로운 국가에서조차 우리는 자유롭지 못합니다.

Our lives, our dreams, our future does not belong to us,

우리의 삶, 꿈, 미래는 우리의 것이 아닙니다.

it belongs to our parents and their community.

부모님들과 지역사회의 것입니다.

I found endless stories of young people

저는 이들로부터 수많은 이야기를 들었습니다.

who are lost to all of us,

그들은 우리로부터 소외되고

who are invisible to all of us

눈에 보이지 않지만

but who are suffering, and they are suffering alone.

고통을 받고 있고 그 고통을 홀로 겪어내고 있습니다.

Kids we are losing to forced marriages, to honor-based violence and abuse.

우리는 강제 결혼이나 명예 살인, 학대로 인해 아이들을 잃고 있습니다.

Eventually, I realized after several years of working with these young people,

that I will not be able to keep running.

I can't spend the rest of my life being scared and hiding

제 남은 생을 겁에 질려 숨는데 쓸 수만은 없습니다.

and that I'm actually going to have to do something.

뭔가를 해야만 합니다.

And I also realized that my silence, our silence,

allows abuse like this to continue.

So I decided that I wanted to put my childhood superpower to some use

제가 어릴 때 가지고 있던 특별한 힘을 사용하여

by trying to make people on the different sides of these issues understand

가족과 나라의 사이에 끼어버린 젊은이란 어떨지

what it's like to be a young person stuck between your family and your country.

다른 쪽에 살고 있는 사람들에게 이해시키기로 했죠.

So I started making films, and I started telling these stories.

그래서 영화를 만들고 이런 이야기들을 들려주기 시작했습니다.

And I also wanted people to understand the deadly consequences of us

또한 이런 문제들을 심각하게 여기지 않는 사람들이

not taking these problems seriously.

죽음으로 이어질 수도 있는 이러한 일들을 이해하기를 바랬죠.

So the first film I made was about Banaz.

제가 만든 첫 번째 영화는 바나즈에 관한 거였습니다.

She was a 17-year-old Kurdish girl in London.

런던에 사는 17세 쿠르드인 소녀였죠.

She was obedient, she did whatever her parents wanted.

그녀는 순종적이었고 부모가 원하면 무엇이든지 했어요.

She tried to do everything right.

모든걸 잘 해내려고 노력했죠.

She married some guy that her parents chose for her,

부모님이 정해준 어떤 남성과 결혼을 했어요.

even though he beat and raped her constantly.

그녀를 상습적으로 폭행하고 강간했는데도요.

And when she tried to go to her family for help, they said,

그녀가 도움을 청하려고 가족을 찾았을 때 그들은 말했죠.

"Well, you got to go back and be a better wife."

"집으로 돌아가 더 훌륭한 아내가 되어야 한다."

Because they didn't want a divorced daughter on their hands

그들은 이혼한 딸을 원치 않았기 때문이죠.

because, of course, that would bring dishonor on the family.

그건 집안의 수치였으니까요.

She was beaten so badly her ears would bleed,

그녀는 귀에서 피가 날 정도로 심하게 폭행을 당했고

and when she finally left and she found a young man that she chose

마침내 집을 나와 그녀가 선택한 젊은 남자와

and she fell in love with,

사랑에 빠지게 되었어요.

the community and the family found out

and she disappeared.

그녀는 사라져버립니다.

She was found three months later.

3개월 후 그녀가 발견 됐는데

She'd been stuffed into a suitcase and buried underneath the house.

여행용 가방에 담긴 채로 집 아래에 묻혀 있었어요.

She had been strangled, she had been beaten to death

목이 졸린 채 맞아서 죽었는데

by three men, three cousins, on the orders of her father and uncle.

그녀의 아버지와 삼촌의 지시를 받은 세 명의 사촌들이 한 짓이었죠.

The added tragedy of Banaz's story

바나즈의 이야기에서 더욱 슬픈 일은

is that she had gone to the police in England five times asking for help,

그녀가 영국 경찰을 다섯 번이나 찾아가 도움을 요청하고

telling them that she was going to be killed by her family.

가족이 죽일거라고 말을 했다는 겁니다.

The police didn't believe her so they didn't do anything.

경찰들은 그녀를 믿지 않아 아무 일도 하지 않았던 거예요.

And the problem with this

여기서 문제는

is that not only are so many of our kids facing these problems

우리의 수많은 아이들이

within their families and within their families' communities,

but they're also meeting misunderstandings

and apathy in the countries that they grow up in.

When their own families betray them, they look to the rest of us,

and when we don't understand,

So while I was making this film, several people said to me,

I can assure you being murdered is not my culture.

You know?

And surely people who look like me,

확실한건 저같이 생긴 사람들

young women who come from backgrounds like me,

저와 같은 배경을 가진 젋은 여성들은

should be subject to the same rights, the same protections

우리가 살고 있는 나라에서

as anybody else in our country, why not?

다른 이들과 똑같은 권리와 보호를 받아야 한다는 거에요. 왜 아니겠어요?

So, for my next film, I wanted to try and understand

다음 영화에서 저는 유럽에 사는 우리의 어린 무슬림 아이들이

why some of our young Muslim kids in Europe

왜 극단주의와 폭력에 노출되는지를

are drawn to extremism and violence.

이해해보려고 노력했습니다.

But with that topic,

그 주제를 가지고 저는

I also recognized that I was going to have to face my worst fear:

저의 가장 큰 두려움과 맞서야 한다는걸 깨달았어요.

the brown men with beards.

바로 수염이 있는 갈색 피부의 남자였죠.

The same men, or similar men,

그 사람이든 그와 비슷한 남자든

to the ones that have hounded me for most of my life.

제 평생을 따라다니던 사람들

Men that I've been afraid of most of my life.

제가 평생동안 두려워했고

Men that I've also deeply disliked,

저를 오랫동안 너무도 싫어했던

for many, many years.

바로 그 남자들이요.

So I spent the next two years interviewing convicted terrorists,

jihadis and former extremists.

What I already knew, what was very obvious already,

But what I was more interested in finding out was what are the human,

what are the personal reasons

why some of our young people are susceptible to groups like this.

And what really surprised me was that I found wounded human beings.

정말 놀랐던 점은 그들은 상처받은 사람들이었다는 거예요.

Instead of the monsters that I was looking for,

제가 찾고 싶었던

that I was hoping to find --

제가 찾기를 바랬던 괴물들이 아니었죠.

quite frankly because it would have been very satisfying --

사실 이렇게 상처 받은 사람들을 찾은 것만으로도

I found broken people.

꽤 만족스러웠어요.

Just like Banaz,

바나즈와 같은

I found that these young men were torn apart

이런 젊은이들이

from trying to bridge the gaps

가족과 그들이 태어난 조국 사이의 틈을 메우려고 노력하다

between their families and the countries that they were born in.

무너지게 된다는 사실을 발견했죠.

And what I also learned is that extremist groups, terrorist groups

역시 알게 된 점은 이런 극단주의, 테러리스트 집단들이

are taking advantage of these feelings of our young people

젊은이들의 이런 감정을 악용하고 있었다는 것이었죠.

and channeling that -- cynically -- channeling that toward violence.

그리고 그 감정을 부정적인 방향으로, 폭력으로 이끌어 갑니다.

"Come to us," they say.

그들은 "우리한테 와."라고 하며

"Reject both sides, your family and your country

"너의 가족과 조국, 두 쪽 다 버려.

because they reject you.

For your family, their honor is more important than you

and for your country,

a real Norwegian, Brit or a French person will always be white and never you."

They're also promising our young people the things that they crave:

significance, heroism, a sense of belonging and purpose,

의미, 영웅주의, 소속감과 목적의식

a community that loves and accepts them.

그들을 사랑하고 받아들일 지역사회죠.

They make the powerless feel powerful.

그들은 무기력한 이들을 힘있게 느끼게 해주죠.

The invisible and the silent are finally seen and heard.

보이지 않고 침묵하던 존재들을 마침내 보이고 들리게 만들어주죠.

This is what they're doing for our young people.

이게 바로 그들이 우리 젊은이들에게 하고 있는 것입니다.

Why are these groups doing this for our young people and not us?

왜 이걸 우리가 아니라 그들이 우리의 아이들에게 하는 건가요?

The thing is,

문제는

I'm not trying to justify

저는 그 어떤 종류의 폭력도

or excuse any of the violence.

정당화하려는 것이 아닙니다.

What I am trying to say is that we have to understand

제가 말하고자 하는건 왜 우리의 젊은이들이

why some of our young people are attracted to this.

이런 것들에 끌리게 되는지를 우리가 알아야 한다는 것입니다.

I would like to also show you, actually --

보여드리고 싶은 것이 있습니다.

these are childhood photos of some of the guys in the film.

영화에 나오는 남성들의 어릴 적 사진인데요

What really struck me is that so many of them --

정말 충격적이었던 것은

I never would have thought this --

제가 생각지도 못했던 부분인데

but so many of them have absent or abusive fathers.

그들 대부분이 아버지가 계시지 않거나 폭력을 행사하는 아버지가 있었죠.

And several of these young guys

젊은 남자들 중 몇 몇은

ended up finding caring and compassionate father figures

결국 이 극단주의 집단 내에서

within these extremist groups.

다정하고 인정 많은 아버지의 모습을 찾으려고 했던 거죠.

I also found men brutalized by racist violence,

폭력적인 인종차별 때문에 짐승이 된 남자들은

but who found a way to stop feeling like victims

그들 스스로 폭력을 행함으로써

by becoming violent themselves.

피해자가 되는 기분을 느끼지 않아도 될 방법을 찾았던 거죠.

In fact, I found something, to my horror, that I recognized.

사실 정말 끔찍한 것을 발견하고 저는 깨달았어요.

I found the same feelings that I felt as a 17-year-old as I fled from Norway.

제가 17살 되던 해 노르웨이를 떠날 때 느꼈던 바로 그 감정을 발견했던 거죠.

The same confusion, the same sorrow,

똑같은 혼란, 똑같은 슬픔을요.

the same feeling of being betrayed

배신 당하는 똑같은 기분

and not belonging to anyone.

그리고 누구에게도 속한 것 같지 않은 느낌.

The same feeling of being lost and torn between cultures.

길을 잃고 문화 사이에서 찢겨진 것 같은 느낌을요.

Having said that, I did not choose destruction,

그렇지만 저는 파멸을 선택하지 않았습니다.

I chose to pick up a camera instead of a gun.

총 대신에 카메라를 들었죠.

And the reason I did that is because of my superpower.

이렇게 한 이유는 저의 특별한 힘 때문이었죠.

I could see that understanding is the answer, instead of violence.

저는 폭력이 아니라 이해가 답이라고 생각했던 거예요.

Seeing human beings

인간을 볼 때

with all their virtues and all their flaws

우리와 그들, 악당과 피해자라는

instead of continuing the caricatures:

과장된 모습만을 보는 것이 아니라

the us and them, the villains and victims.

그들 자신의 장점과 단점을 보는 거죠.

I'd also finally come to terms with the fact

마침내 저의 두 문화는

that my two cultures didn't have to be on a collision course

충돌이 불가피한 상황에 있을 필요가 없다는 사실을 받아들였죠.

but instead became a space where I found my own voice.

대신 자신의 목소리를 찾을 수 있는 공간이 되는거죠.

I stopped feeling like I had to pick a side,

어느 한 편을 정해야 한다는 생각을 멈추었습니다.

but this took me many, many years.

하지만 오랜 시간이 걸렸죠.

There are so many of our young people today

같은 주제로 고통 받고 있는 젊은이들이

who are struggling with these same issues,

너무나도 많습니다.

and they're struggling with this alone.

그들은 홀로 이 문제와 싸우고있죠.

And this leaves them open like wounds.

이 싸움은 이들에게 벌어진 상처를 남깁니다.

And for some, the worldview of radical Islam

어떤 이들에게 급진적인 이슬람교에 대한 세계관은

becomes the infection that festers in these open wounds.

이 개방된 상처를 곪게하는 감염 같은 거예요.

There's an African proverb that says,

아프리카에는 이런 속담이 있습니다.

"If the young are not initiated into the village,

"젊은이가 마을에서 받아들여지지 않으면

they will burn it down just to feel its warmth."

따뜻함을 느끼기 위해 마을을 태울 것이다."

I would like to ask --

저는 무슬림 부모님들과 지역사회에

to Muslim parents and Muslim communities,

묻고 싶어요.

will you love and care for your children

여러분은 자녀들을 기대에 부응하도록 강요하지 않고

without forcing them to meet your expectations?

사랑하고 돌봐줄 수 있나요?

Can you choose them instead of your honor?

당신의 불명예 대신 자녀들을 선택 할 수 있나요?

Can you understand why they're so angry and alienated

당신이 그들의 행복보다 명예를 중요시 할 때

when you put your honor before their happiness?

자녀들이 왜 분노하고 소외감을 느끼는지 이해 할 수 있나요?

Can you try to be a friend to your child

자녀들이 당신을 신뢰하고

so that they can trust you

그들의 경험을 당신과 공유 할 수 있도록

and want to share with you their experiences,

그들의 친구가 되어 줄 수 있나요?

rather than having to seek it somewhere else?

그들이 다른 곳에서 찾지 않도록요.

And to our young people tempted by extremism,

그리고 극단주의에 끌리는 젊은이들에게는

can you acknowledge that your rage is fueled by pain?

고통이 너의 분노에 기름을 끼얹는다는 것을 알고 있니?

Will you find the strength to resist those cynical old men

너의 피를 이용해 자신의 이익을 추구할

who want to use your blood for their own profits?

부정적인 나이든 남자들에 대항할 힘을 기르겠니?

Can you find a way to live?

살아갈 방법을 찾을 수 있겠니?

Can you see that the sweetest revenge

가장 아름다운 복수는

is for you to live a happy, full and free life?

네가 행복하고 풍요롭고 자유로운 삶을 살아가는거라는 것을 알겠니?

A life defined by you and nobody else.

그 누구도 아닌 너에 의해 정의된 삶을 말이야.

Why do you want to become just another dead Muslim kid?

왜 죽어가는 또 다른 무슬림 어린이가 되고자 하는 거니?

And for the rest of us, when will we start listening to our young people?

그리고 우리들에게는, 언제쯤 우리는 젊은이들에게 귀를 기울이기 시작할까요?

How can we support them

어떻게 그들의 고통을

in redirecting their pain into something more constructive?

좀 더 건설적인 쪽으로 돌려 그들을 도와줄 수 있을까요?

They think we don't like them.

그들은 우리가 자기들을 싫어한다고 생각합니다.

They think we don't care what happens to them.

그들에게 무슨 일이 일어나는지 우리가 신경쓰지 않는다고 생각하죠.

They think we don't accept them.

우리가 그들을 받아들이지 않는다고 생각해요.

Can we find a way to make them feel differently?

그들이 다른 방향으로 생각하게하는 방법을 찾을 수 있을까요?

What will it take for us to see them and notice them

어떻게 해야 그들이 폭력의 피해자나 가해자가 되기 전에

before they become either the victims or the perpetrators of violence?

보고 알아차릴 수 있을까요?

Can we make ourselves care about them and consider them to be our own?

우리 스스로 그들을 보살피고 우리 중 하나라고 생각하게 만들 수 있을까요?

And not just be outraged when the victims of violence look like ourselves?

폭력의 피해자가 우리 자신의 모습일 때 격분하지 않을 수 있나요?

Can we find a way to reject hatred and heal the divisions between us?

증오를 거부하고 우리 사이의 분열을 치유할 방법을 찾을 수 있을까요?

The thing is we cannot afford to give up on each other or on our kids,

문제는 우리는 서로나 우리의 아이들을 포기할 여유가 없다는 것입니다.

even if they've given up on us.

그들이 우리를 포기한다고 해도요.

We are all in this together.

이 문제에 있어 우리는 모두 하나입니다.

And in the long term, revenge and violence will not work against extremists.

장기적으로 볼 때 복수와 폭력은 극단주의자들에게 불리할 것입니다.

Terrorists want us to huddle in our houses in fear,

테러리스트들은 우리가 두려움에 떨며 집에서 웅크리기를 원합니다.

closing our doors and our hearts.

문을 닫고 마음을 닫은 채로요.

They want us to tear open more wounds in our societies

그들은 우리가 사회에서 상처를 더 찢어내기를 바랍니다.

so that they can use them to spread their infection more widely.

그래야 감염을 더 널리 퍼뜨리도록 우리를 이용할 수 있으니까요.

They want us to become like them:

그들은 우리가 자기들처럼

intolerant, hateful and cruel.

편협하고 증오에 가득 찬, 잔인한 사람들이 되기를 원합니다.

This is a white girl and an Arab girl.

백인 소녀와 아랍 소녀입니다.

They're best friends.

This image is the kryptonite for extremists.

이 이미지는 극단주의자들의 크립토나이트에요.

These two little girls with their superpowers

특별한 힘을 지닌 이 두 소녀들이

are showing the way forward

우리가 함께 만들어 나가야 할 사회를 향해

towards a society that we need to build together,

앞으로 나아가는 길을 보여주고 있죠.

a society that includes and supports,

우리 아이들을 거부하는 것이 아닌

rather than rejects our kids.

도와주는 사회이죠.
