But what I find really fascinating

is what happens when architects and planners leave

and these places become appropriated by people,

like here in Chandigarh, India,

the city which has been completely designed

Now 60 years later, the city has been taken over

But over the course of several years,

and the olympic stadium in the same city

At these large-scale construction sites in China,

중국의 이런 대규모 공사 현장에서는

you see a sort of makeshift camp

간이 야영지 같은 걸 볼 수 있는데요.

where workers live during the entire building process.

공사 기간 내내 인부들이 거주하는 곳입니다.

As the length of the construction takes years,

공사가 몇년간 계속되면서

workers end up forming a rather rough-and-ready

인부들은 단순하지만 그럴듯한

informal city, making for quite a juxtaposition

against the sophisticated structures that they're building.

Over the past seven years, I've been following

Just over three years ago,

I was for the first time in Caracas, Venezuela,

and while flying over the city, I was just amazed

During a conversation with local architects Urban-Think Tank,

I learned about the Torre David,

a 45-story office building which sits

right in the center of Caracas.

The building was under construction

until the collapse of the Venezuelan economy

and the death of the developer in the early '90s.

About eight years ago, people started moving

into the abandoned tower

and began to build their homes right in between

There's only one little entrance to the entire building,

and the 3,000 residents come in and out

Together, the inhabitants created public spaces

and designed them to feel more like a home

In the lobby, they painted the walls and planted trees.

They also made a basketball court.

But when you look up closely,

you see massive holes where elevators

and services would have run through.

Within the tower, people have come up

with all sorts of solutions

in response to the various needs

which arise from living in an unfinished tower.

With no elevators,

엘레베이터가 없이

the tower is like a 45-story walkup.

45층을 걸어 올라가야 할 건물인데도

Designed in very specific ways

건축이나 디자인 교육을 전혀 받지 못한 사람들이

by this group of people

자신들의 특별한 방식으로

who haven't had any education in architecture or design.

해결책을 고안해냈습니다.

And with each inhabitant finding their own

주민 개개인이

unique way of coming by,

자신만의 방법으로 이곳에 정착하면서

this tower becomes like a living city,

a place which is alive with micro-economies

and small businesses.

The inventive inhabitants, for instance,

find opportunities in the most unexpected cases,

like the adjacent parking garage,

which has been reclaimed as a taxi route

to shuttle the inhabitants up through the ramps

A walk through the tower

reveals how residents have figured out

how to create walls, how to make an air flow,

how to create transparency,

circulation throughout the tower,

essentially creating a home

that's completely adapted

When a new inhabitant moves into the tower,

It's remarkable to see the design decisions

The inhabitants literally built up these homes

instills a great sense of pride

in many families living in this tower.

They typically make the best out of their conditions,

and try to make their spaces look nice and homey,

or at least up until as far as they can reach.

Throughout the tower, you come across

all kinds of services, like the barber,

small factories, and every floor has

a little grocery store or shop.

And you even find a church.

And on the 30th floor, there is a gym

where all the weights and barbells

are made out of the leftover pulleys

From the outside, behind this always-changing facade,

Let's go now to Africa, to Nigeria,

to a community called Makoko,

a slum where 150,000 people

약 150,000 명의 사람들이 살고 있는 빈민가로

live just meters above the Lagos Lagoon.

While it may appear to be a completely chaotic place,

when you see it from above, there seems to be

a whole grid of waterways and canals

From the main dock, people board long wooden canoes

When out on the water, it's clear

Even the canoes become variety stores

심지어 카누들마저 잡화상이 되었죠.

where ladies paddle from house to house,

selling anything from toothpaste to fresh fruits.

치약에서 신선한 과일까지 온갖 것을 팝니다.

Behind every window and door frame,

이곳의 모든 창문과 문 뒤에는

you'll see a small child peering back at you,

조그만 아이가 여러분을 쳐다볼 겁니다.

and while Makoko seems to be packed with people,

마코코는 사람들로 꽉 찬 것 처럼 보이지만

what's more shocking is actually

실제로 더 충격적인 건

the amount of children pouring out of every building.

모든 건물에서 쏟아져 나오는 아이들의 숫자입니다.

The population growth in Nigeria,

and especially in these areas like Makoko,

are painful reminders

of how out of control things really are.

In Makoko, very few systems

and infrastructures exist.

Electricity is rigged and freshest water

comes from self-built wells throughout the area.

This entire economic model

is designed to meet a specific way of living

on the water, so fishing and boat-making

물고기를 잡거나 배를 만드는 일이

are common professions.

평범한 직업입니다.

You'll have a set of entrepreneurs

많은 사업가들이

who have set up businesses throughout the area,

이 지역 여기저기서 장사를 시작했죠.

like barbershops, CD and DVD stores,

이발소나, CD와 DVD 판매점,

movie theaters, tailors, everything is there.

영화관, 재단사, 모든 게 다 있습니다.

There is even a photo studio

심지어 사진관도 있는데

where you see the sort of aspiration

진짜 집에 대한 동경이나

to live in a real house or to be associated

저기 보이시는 스웨덴의 호텔같은

with a faraway place, like that hotel in Sweden.

먼 타국에 대한 염원을 볼 수 있지요.

On this particular evening,

어느날 저녁 저는

I came across this live band

서로 어울리도록 완벽하게 복장을 갖춰입은

dressed to the T in their coordinating outfits.

이 라이브 밴드와 마주치게 되었습니다.

They were floating through the canals

그들은 커다란 카누에 고친 발전기를 싣고

in a large canoe with a fitted-out generator

이 공동체의 모두가 즐길 수 있도록

for all of the community to enjoy.

수로를 떠 다니며 연주하고 있었습니다.

By nightfall, the area becomes almost pitch black,

밤이 되면 이곳은 거의 암흑 상태가 됩니다.

save for a small lightbulb

작은 전구 불빛이나

or a fire.

모닥불을 제외하고요.

What originally brought me to Makoko

제가 마코코에 찾아간 본래 이유는

was this project from a friend of mine,

Kunlé Adeyemi, who recently finished building

그는 최근

this three-story floating school

마코코의 아이들을 위해

for the kids in Makoko.

3층짜리 수상 학교를 세웠습니다.

With this entire village existing on the water,

마을 전부가 물 위에 있기 때문에

public space is very limited,

공공 장소로 쓸 수 있는 공간은 매우 제한되어 있는데요.

so now that the school is finished,

이 완성된 학교의

the ground floor is a playground for the kids,

1층은 아이들의 놀이터로 쓰이지만

but when classes are out, the platform

학교가 끝나면 같은 플랫폼이

is just like a town square,

마을의 광장처럼 되어서

where the fishermen mend their nets

어부들이 그물을 고치고

and floating shopkeepers dock their boats.

수상 상점 주인들이 배를 정박시키는 곳이 됐습니다.

Another place I'd like to share with you

또 한군데 소개시켜 드리고 싶은 곳은

is the Zabbaleen in Cairo.

카이로의 자발린입니다.

They're descendants of farmers who began migrating

이들은 북부 이집트에서

from the upper Egypt in the '40s,

1940년대부터 이주를 시작한 농부들의 후손입니다.

and today they make their living

오늘날 이들은

by collecting and recycling waste from homes

카이로 전역의 집에서 나오는

from all over Cairo.

쓰레기를 모아 재활용하며 살아가고 있습니다.

For years, the Zabbaleen would live in makeshift villages

수년간 자발린은 임시 마을을 만들어

where they would move around

trying to avoid the local authorities,

but in the early 1980s, they settled

on the Mokattam rocks

and the upper floor is dedicated to living space.

I find it incredible to see

how these piles and piles of garbage

이곳에 사는 사람들에게는

are invisible to the people who live there,

이 산더미와 같은 쓰레기가 보이지 않는 것 같다는 것입니다.

like this very distinguished man who is posing

사진을 위해 포즈를 취하는 이 고상한 신사분을 보세요.

while all this garbage is sort of streaming out behind him,

뒤에서 쓰레기가 쏟아져 나오고 있는데 말이죠.

or like these two young men who are sitting

아니면 수톤의 쓰레기 위에 앉아서

and chatting amongst these tons of garbage.

얘기하고 있는 이 두 젊은이들은 어떻습니까.

While to most of us, living amongst

these piles and piles of garbage

이렇게 쓰레기의 산더미 사이에서

may seem totally uninhabitable,

to those in the Zabbaleen, this is just

a different type of normal.

In all these places I've talked about today,

what I do find fascinating is that there's really

Throughout the day, it's quite common

in the streets, just like this engagement party.

In this tradition, the bride-to-be

displays all of their belongings,

which they soon bring to their new husband.

결혼 후 남편에게 가져갑니다.

A gathering like this one

위와 같은 모임은

offers such a juxtaposition

where all the new stuff is displayed

and all the garbage is used

as props to display all their new home accessories.

Like Makoko and the Torre David,

throughout the Zabbaleen you'll find all

the same facilities as in any typical neighborhood.

평범한 마을에 있을법한 가게들을 발견할 것입니다.

There are the retail shops, the cafes

소매점들, 카페들,

and the restaurants, and the community

레스토랑들이요.

is this community of Coptic Christians,

이 공동체는 콥트 기독교 공동체입니다.

so you'll also find a church,

교회뿐 아니라

along with the scores of religious iconographies

이 지역 곳곳에서

throughout the area,

수십개의 종교 장식을 찾을 수 있습니다.

and also all the everyday services

일상에서 필요한 서비스도 있죠.

like the electronic repair shops,

전자제품 수리점이나

the barbers, everything.

이발소도 있고, 없는 게 없습니다.

Visiting the homes of the Zabbaleen

자발린의 가정집을 방문하는 것도

is also full of surprises.

역시 놀라움에 가득찬 경험이었습니다.

While from the outside,

겉에서 보면

these homes look like any other informal structure

이 집들은 이 도시에 있는

in the city, when you step inside,

여느 다른 구조없는 건물처럼 보이겠지만, 안에 들어가면,

you are met with all manner of design decisions

온갖 종류의 디자인 결정과

and interior decoration.

실내 장식을 마주치게 됩니다.

Despite having limited access to space and money,

한정된 공간과 돈으로도

the homes in the area are designed

이 지역의 집들은

with care and detail.

주의와 세심함으로 디자인 되었습니다.

Every apartment is unique,

하나 하나의 아파트가 모두 독특하게 다르고,

and this individuality tells a story

이 개성이 각 가정의

about each family's circumstances and values.

상황과 가치관에 대한 이야기를 들려주는 것입니다.

Many of these people take their homes

이곳의 많은 사람들은

and interior spaces very seriously,

자신의 집과 내부 공간을 매우 진지하게 고려하고

putting a lot of work and care

사소한 부분에까지

into the details.

많은 주의와 노력을 기울입니다.

The shared spaces are also treated in the same manner,

where walls are decorated in faux marble patterns.

But despite this elaborate decor,

sometimes these apartments are used

in very unexpected ways,

like this home which caught my attention

여기에 제 시선을 사로잡았던 한 집이 있는데요.

while all the mud and the grass was literally

진흙과 풀들이 말 그대로

seeping out under the front door.

현관문 틈으로 스며나오고 있었습니다.

When I was let in, it appeared that this fifth-floor apartment

제가 안으로 들어갔을 때, 5층에 위치한 이 아파트는

was being transformed into a complete animal farm,

완벽한 가축 농장으로 탈바꿈되고 있는 중이었습니다.

where six or seven cows stood grazing

여섯 일곱마리의 소들이

in what otherwise would be the living room.

원래는 거실이어야 할 공간에서 풀을 뜯고 있었습니다.

But then in the apartment across the hall

하지만 이 집의 복도 반대편

from this cow shed lives a newly married couple

이 외양간의 건너편에는 한 신혼 부부가

in what locals describe

as one of the nicest apartments in the area.

The attention to this detail astonished me,

and as the owner of the home so proudly

led me around this apartment,

from floor to ceiling, every part was decorated.

But if it weren't for the strangely familiar

그 기묘하게 익숙한

stomach-churning odor that constantly

속이 울렁거리는 냄새가

passes through the apartment,

아파트에 끊임없이 불어오지 않았더라면

it would be easy to forget

that you are standing next to a cow shed

and on top of a landfill.

서 있다는 것을 금방 잊어버렸을 겁니다.

What moved me the most was that despite

these seemingly inhospitable conditions,

보시다시피 열악한 환경 속에서도

I was welcomed with open arms

주인은 저를 두 팔 벌려 환영하며

into a home that was made with love, care,

사랑과 정성, 거리낌없는 열정으로 만든

and unreserved passion.

자신의 집에 초대했다는 것입니다.

Let's move across the map to China,

이제 지도를 건너서 중국으로 가보죠.

to an area called Shanxi, Henan and Gansu.

산시성, 허난성, 간쑤성 입니다.

In a region famous for the soft, porous Loess Plateau soil,

부드럽고 기포가 많은 황토고원 흙으로 유명한 이곳에서는

there lived until recently an estimated

40 million people in these houses underground.

지하에 지어진 집에서 살았습니다.

These dwellings are called the yaodongs.

이 주거 공간들은 야오동이라 불립니다.

Through this architecture by subtraction,

감산으로 이뤄진 건축물인

these yaodongs are built literally inside of the soil.

이 야오동들은 말 그대로 흙 속에 지어졌습니다.

In these villages, you see an entirely altered landscape,

이곳의 마을들에서는 완전히 변형된 지형을 보실 수 있습니다.

and hidden behind these mounds of dirt

이 흙더미 뒤에는

are these square, rectangular houses

이런 정사각형, 사각형의 집들이 숨어있지요.

which sit seven meters below the ground.

지표면에서 7미터나 떨어진 지하에요.

When I asked people why they were digging

제가 사람들에게 왜 땅을 파서

their houses from the ground,

집을 짓냐고 물었을 때

they simply replied that they are poor wheat

그들은 자신들은 가난한

and apple farmers who didn't have the money

밀 혹은 사과 농부라서

to buy materials, and this digging out

건축 자재를 살 돈이 없기 때문에

was their most logical form of living.

이렇게 땅을 파서 집을 짓는 것이 가장 이치에 맞는 생활법이라고 답했습니다.

From Makoko to Zabbaleen, these communities

마코코에서 자발린까지 이 공동체의 일원들은

have approached the tasks of planning,

자신들의 공동체와 구역들을

design and management of their communities

기획하고 설계하고 관리하는 것을

and neighborhoods in ways that respond

자신들의 환경과 상황에

specifically to their environment and circumstances.

딱 맞는 방법으로 접근했습니다.

Created by these very people who live,

이 장소들에서 실제로 거주하고

work and play in these particular spaces,

일하고 노는 사람들에 의해 창조된

these neighborhoods are intuitively designed

이 공간들은 직감적으로 디자인되었고

to make the most of their circumstances.

사람들이 자신들의 상황을 최대한 활용하고 있습니다.

In most of these places, the government

거의 대부분의 경우, 이런 곳들에는

is completely absent, leaving inhabitants

정부의 도움이 전혀 없기 때문에

with no choice but to reappropriate found materials,

and while these communities are highly disadvantaged,

they do present examples

of brilliant forms of ingenuity,

and prove that indeed we have the ability

to adapt to all manner of circumstances.

What makes places like the Torre David

토레 다비드 같은 주거지들이

particularly remarkable

특별히 놀라운 것은

is this sort of skeleton framework

이 건물같이 헐벗은 골격만 가지고도

where people can have a foundation

주민들은 이것을 기반으로

where they can tap into.

활용할 수 있었다는 것입니다.

Now imagine what these already ingenious communities

이것만으로도 이렇게 독창적이고 기발한 이 공동체들이

could create themselves,

만약 그들이 활용할 수 있는

and how highly particular their solutions would be,

사회 기반시설이 있었다면

if they were given the basic infrastructures

얼마나 더 기발한 해결책들이 나올지

that they could tap into.

Today, you see these large residential development projects

오늘날은 대규모의 주택 개발 사업들이

which offer cookie-cutter housing solutions

틀로 찍어낸 듯 똑같은 거주 해결책들을

to massive amounts of people.

수많은 사람들에게 제공하고 있습니다.

From China to Brazil, these projects attempt

중국부터 브라질까지, 이런 건축 사업들은

to provide as many houses as possible,

최대한 많은 집을 지으려 하지만

but they're completely generic

이 집들은 하나하나가 다 똑같고

and simply do not work as an answer

거주인 개개인의 필요를

to the individual needs of the people.
