I want to give you a new perspective.

That sounds grandiose, and it is.

I left Ireland yesterday morning.

전 어제 아침에 아일랜드를 떠났습니다.

I traveled from Dublin to New York

더블린에서 뉴욕까지 혼자 가는 여정이었습니다.

independently.

But the design of an airport,

하지만 공항과 비행기, 터미널의 디자인은

plane and terminal

offers little independence when you're 105 and a half centimeters tall.

105.5cm인 사람에게 독립성을 거의 허락하지 않습니다.

For Americans, that's 3' 5".

미국 단위로 하면 3피트 5인치입니다.

I was whisked through the airport by airline assistants in a wheelchair.

항공사 직원이 절 휠체어에 태워 공항을 휘젓고 다녔죠.

Now, I don't need to use a wheelchair,

사실 전 휠체어가 필요 없는 사람이지만

but the design of an airport

공항의 디자인과

and its lack of accessibility

제한된 접근성 때문에

means that it's my only way to get through.

이게 제가 공항을 이용할 수 있는 유일한 방법이 되는거죠.

With my carry-on bag between my feet,

여행가방을 두 발 사이에 놓고

I was wheeled through security, preclearance

휠체어에 실려서 보안검색대와 사전입국검사를 거쳐

and I arrived at my boarding gate.

탑승구까지 도착했습니다.

I use the accessibility services in the airport

저는 공항의 교통약자 서비스를 이용하는데요.

because most of the terminal is just not designed with me in mind.

그 이유는 대부분의 터미널이 절 염두에 두지 않고 디자인되었기 때문입니다.

Take security, for example.

예를 들어, 보안검색대를 통과할 때

I'm not strong enough to lift my carry-on bag

저는 여행가방을 바닥에서 컨베이어 벨트까지 옮길만큼

from the ground to the carousel.

힘이 세지 않습니다.

I stand at eye level with it.

컨베이어 벨트가 제 눈높이에 있거든요.

And those who work in that space for safety purposes cannot help me

그리고 거기 계시는 보안을 위해 근무하는 분들은

저를 도와주거나 제 대신 짐을 올려주실 수가 없습니다.

and cannot do it for me.

Design inhibits my autonomy and my independence.

디자인은 저의 자율성과 독립성을 저해합니다.

But traveling at this size, it isn't all bad.

하지만 이 사이즈의 몸으로 여행하는 게 꼭 나쁘지만은 않습니다.

The leg room in economy is like business class.

다리 뻗을 공간이 이코노미를 타도 비즈니스급이거든요.

(Laughter)

I often forget that I'm a little person.

저는 제가 작은 키라는 걸 자주 잊어버리곤 합니다.

It's the physical environment and society that remind me.

그걸 생각나게 해 주는 건 외부의 물리적 환경과 사회죠.

Using a public bathroom is an excruciating experience.

공중화장실을 이용하는 건 무척 곤욕스러운 일입니다.

I walk into the cubicle

화장실 칸 안으로 들어가면

but I can't reach the lock on the door.

문 잠금장치에 손이 닿지 않습니다.

I'm creative and resilient.

저는 창의적이고 꿋꿋하니까

I look around and see if there's a bin that I can turn upside down.

뒤집을 수 있는 휴지통이 있는지 둘러봅니다.

Is it safe?

안전하냐고요?

Not really.

별로 그렇지 않습니다.

Is it hygienic and sanitary?

위생적일까요?

Definitely not.

절대 아니죠.

But the alternative is much worse.

하지만 이게 여의치 않으면 더 나쁜 대안을 써야합니다.

If that doesn't work, I use my phone.

쓰레기통으로 안되면, 저는 제 핸드폰을 동원합니다.

It gives me an additional four- to six-inch reach,

핸드폰을 쓰면 4-6인치 정도 더 닿을 수 있어서

and I try to jam the lock closed with my iPhone.

저는 문을 잠그는데 아이폰을 씁니다.

Now, I imagine that's not what Jony Ive had in mind when he designed the iPhone,

조니 아이브가 아이폰을 디자인할 때 이걸 염두에 둔 건 아니겠지만

but it works.

아무튼 효과가 있어요.

The alternative is that I approach a stranger.

그렇지 않으면 저는 모르는 사람에게 다가가서

I apologize profusely

열심히 양해를 구하고

and I ask them to stand guard outside my cubicle door.

제 화장실 칸 앞에서 보초를 서 달라고 부탁합니다.

They do

그분들은 그렇게 해주십니다.

and I emerge grateful

전 무척 감사한 마음이 들지만

but absolutely mortified,

동시에 심한 굴욕감도 느낍니다.

and hope that they didn't notice

그리고 제가 화장실에서 나갈 때 손을 씻지 않는 것을

that I left the bathroom without washing my hands.

그 분들이 못 보시길 바라죠.

I carry hand sanitizer with me every single day

저는 하루도 빠짐없이 손소독제를 들고 다닙니다.

because the sink, soap dispenser, hand dryer and mirror

왜냐하면 세면대, 물비누통, 건조기, 거울 모두가

are all out of my reach.

제가 닿을 수 없는 높이에 있거든요.

Now, the accessible bathroom is somewhat of an option.

장애인용 화장실이 어느 정도는 대안이 되기도 합니다.

In this space, I can reach the lock on the door,

거기에선 문의 잠금장치나

the sink, the soap dispenser, the hand dryer and the mirror.

세면대, 물비누통, 건조기, 거울에 손이 닿습니다.

Yet, I cannot use the toilet.

하지만 변기는 여전히 사용할 수 없습니다.

It is deliberately designed higher

장애인용 변기는 의도적으로 높게 설계됐는데

so that wheelchair users can transfer across with ease.

그래야 휠체어 사용자가 쉽게 옮겨갈 수 있기 때문이죠.

This is a wonderful and necessary innovation,

이것은 필요하고 훌륭한 혁신입니다.

but in the design world, when we describe a new project or idea as accessible,

하지만 디자인의 세계에서 새로운 프로젝트나 아이디어를

what does that mean?

접근성 측면에서 본다는 게 무엇을 의미합니까?

Who is it accessible to?

누구를 위한 접근성이지요?

And whose needs are not being accommodated for?

필요가 충족되지 않은 사람은 누굴까요?

Now, the bathroom is an example

아까 그 화장실은

of where design impinges upon my dignity,

디자인이 저의 품위를 떨어뜨리는 한 예입니다만

but the physical environment impacts upon me in much more casual ways too,

전 오히려 소소한 상황에서 더 물리적 환경의 영향을 받습니다.

something as simple as ordering a cup of coffee.

커피 주문과 같은 간단한 것에서요.

Now, I'll admit it.

네, 인정합니다.

I drink far too much coffee.

전 커피를 좀 많이 마십니다.

My order is a skinny vanilla latte,

제가 좋아하는 커피는 스키니 바닐라 라떼인데요.

but I'm trying to wean myself off the syrup.

그래도 시럽은 빼려고 노력해요.

But the coffee shop, it's not designed well,

그런데 커피숍은 그다지 잘 디자인 되지 않은 것 같아요.

at least not for me.

적어도 저한테는요.

Queuing, I'm standing beside the pastry cabinet

제가 빵 진열장 쪽으로 줄을 서 있으면

and the barista calls for the next order.

바리스타가 다음번 사람을 부릅니다.

"Next, please!" they shout.

"다음 분!" 하고 소리를 질러요.

They can't see me.

그들에겐 제가 보이지 않습니다.

The person next to me in the queue points to my existence

제 뒷사람이 손가락으로 절 가리키며 저의 존재를 알리면

and everyone is embarrassed.

모두 당황한 기색이 역력하지요.

I order as quick as I can and I move along to collect my coffee.

저는 가능한 한 빨리 주문을 하고 커피 나오는 곳으로 갑니다.

Now, think just for a second.

여기서 잠시만 생각해보세요.

Where do they put it?

커피를 만들면 어디에 놓지요?

Up high and without a lid.

높은 곳에 뚜껑 없이 놓아줍니다.

Reaching up to collect a coffee that I have paid for

내 돈 주고 산 커피를 가져가려고 손을 뻗을 때

is an incredibly dangerous experience.

전 어머어마한 위험에 노출됩니다.

But design also impinges on the clothes that I want to wear.

디자인은 제 패션에도 악영향을 줍니다.

I want garments that reflect my personality.

저는 저의 개성을 드러내는 의상을 입고 싶어요.

It's difficult to find in the childrenswear department.

그런 옷은 아동복 코너엔 잘 없거든요.

And often womenswear requires far too many alterations.

여성복은 수선을 너무 많이 해야 해요.

I want shoes that affect my maturity, professionalism and sophistication.

신발도 저의 원숙함과 프로다움, 현학미를 보여주는 것을 신고 싶지만

Instead, I'm offered sneakers with Velcro straps and light-up shoes.

불빛이 들어오는 찍찍이 운동화를 권유받곤 합니다.

Now, I'm not totally opposed to light-up shoes.

뭐, 불빛 들어오는 신발이 꼭 싫다는 건 아니에요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

But design also impacts on such simple things,

하지만 디자인은 의자에 앉는 행위 같은

like sitting on a chair.

단순한 것들에도 영향을 미칩니다.

I cannot go from a standing to a seating position with grace.

저는 서 있다가 앉을 때 우아한 동작으로 앉을 수가 없습니다.

Due to the standards of design heights of chairs,

표준 디자인에 의해 의자 높이가 정해져있기 때문에

I have to crawl on my hands and knees

고지 정복의 일념 하나로

just to get on top of it,

손발로 기어 올라가야만 하죠.

whilst also being conscious that it might tip over at any stage.

기어 올라가는 도중에 언제라도 의자가 뒤집힐 수 있다는 것도 알고 있습니다.

But whilst design impacts on me

그러나 그게 의자가 됐든, 화장실이나 커피숍이나 옷이 됐든

whether it's a chair, a bathroom, a coffee shop, or clothes,

디자인이 제게 영향을 미치는 와중에도

I rely on and benefit

낯선 사람들의 친절한 손길에 힘입어

from the kindness of strangers.

친절한 도움을 받으며 살아갑니다.

But not everybody is so nice.

하지만 모두가 친절한 것은 아닙니다.

I'm reminded that I'm a little person

제 키가 작다는 것을 실감하는 때는

when a stranger points,

낯선 사람이 손가락질하거나

stares,

쳐다보고

laughs,

웃고

calls me a name,

제 이름을 막 부르거나

or takes a photograph of me.

제 사진을 찍을 때 입니다.

This happens almost every day.

이런 일은 매일같이 벌어집니다.

With the rise of social media, it has given me an opportunity

소셜 미디어의 발달은

and a platform to have a voice as a blogger and as an activist,

블로거와 사회활동가로서 목소리를 내는 기회와 플랫폼을 제공하기도 하지만

but it has also made me nervous

동시에 저를 불안하게 만들기도 합니다.

that I might become a meme

제가 포스팅거리가 되거나

or a viral sensation,

인터넷을 떠다니는 눈요깃거리가 될 수 있다는 점에서요.

all without my consent.

제가 차단할 수 없는 공간에서 말이죠.

So let's take a moment right now

이제 몇 가지 사안에 대해

to make something very clear.

분명히 하고자 합니다.

The word "midget" is a slur.

"midget(난쟁이)"란 단어는 모욕적인 표현입니다.

It evolved from PT Barnum's era of circuses and freak shows.

이것은 PT 바넘의 서커스와 기형쇼에서 나온 말입니다.

Society has evolved.

사회는 달라졌습니다.

So should our vocabulary.

그럼 우리의 언어도 달라져야 합니다.

Language is a powerful tool.

언어는 강력한 도구입니다.

It does not just name our society.

언어는 우리 사회를 그저 명명하는 게 아닙니다.

It shapes it.

사회의 형태를 만듭니다.

I am incredibly proud to be a little person,

저는 키가 작은 것도

to have inherited the condition of achondroplasia.

연골무형성증이 유전된 것도 매우 자랑스럽습니다.

But I am most proud to be Sinead.

하지만 가장 자랑스러운 것은 시네이드로 사는 것이에요.

Achondroplasia is the most common form of dwarfism.

연골무형성증은 왜소증의 여러 형태 중 가장 흔합니다.

Achondroplasia translates as "without cartilage formation."

연골무형성증은 "연골이 형성되지 않는다"는 뜻인데요.

I have short limbs and achondroplastic facial features,

저는 짧은 사지와 연골무형성증 특유의 얼굴을 하고 있어요.

my forehead and my nose.

제 이마와 코가 그렇습니다.

My arms do not straighten fully,

제 팔은 완전히 쫙 펴지지 않습니다.

but I can lick my elbow.

그 대신 팔꿈치를 핥을 수 있어요.

I'm not showing you that one.

굳이 보여드리진 않을게요.

Achondroplasia occurs in approximately one in every 20,000 births.

연골무형성증은 대략 2만 명 중 한 명꼴로 나타납니다.

80 percent of little people are born to two average-height parents.

왜소증을 가진 사람의 80%가 평균키의 부모 밑에서 태어납니다.

That means that anybody in this room could have a child with achondroplasia.

즉 여기 계신 누구라도 연골무형성증 아이의 부모가 되실 수 있다는 거죠.

Yet, I inherited my condition from my dad.

그러나 저는 저희 아버지로부터 유전된 경우입니다.

I'd like to show you a photo of my family.

저희 가족사진을 보여드릴게요.

My mother is average height,

저희 어머니는 평균 신장이시고

my father is a little person

저희 아버지는 저신장이시고

and I am the eldest of five children.

저는 다섯 아이 중 첫째입니다.

I have three sisters and one brother.

저는 여동셋 세 명, 남동생 한 명이 있습니다.

They are all average height.

그 애들은 모두 평균키에요.

I am incredibly fortunate to have been born into a family

저는 엄청나게 행운아인게

that cultivated my curiosity and my tenacity,

저희 가족은 제 호기심과 끈기를 키워주고

that protected me from the unkindness and ignorance of strangers

외부의 무지와 불친절함으로부터 절 보호해주었으니까요.

and that armed me with the resilience, creativity and confidence

살아남기 위한, 그리고 외부환경과 사회를 다루는 데 필요한

that I needed to survive and manipulate the physical environment and society.

회복력, 창의성, 자신감으로 저를 무장시켜주었죠.

If I was to pinpoint any reason why I am successful,

만약 제가 성공한 이유 하나를 꼽으라면

it is because I was and I am a loved child,

그건 단연코 제가 사랑 받으며 자란 아이라는 겁니다.

now, a loved child with a lot of sass and sarcasm,

여러분은 지금 삐딱하고 까칠한, 사랑받은 아이를 보고 계십니다.

but a loved child nonetheless.

어쨌거나 전 사랑 받고 컸습니다.

In giving you an insight into who I am today

지금의 제가 어떤 사람인지 보여드린 것과 함께

I wanted to offer you a new perspective.

저는 여러분께 새로운 관점을 제안드리고자 합니다.

I wanted to challenge the idea

저는 디자인이 기능과 미를 창조하는

that design is but a tool to create function and beauty.

도구일 뿐이라는 생각에 이의를 제기하고 싶습니다.

Design greatly impacts upon people's lives,

디자인은 사람들의 삶에 큰 영향력을 미칩니다.

all lives.

모든 이의 삶에 말입니다.

Design is a way in which we can feel included in the world,

디자인은 우리가 세상에서 소속감을 느끼는 한 방법이며,

but it is also a way in which we can uphold a person's dignity

더불어 한 인간의 품위와 인권을 옹호하는

and their human rights.

수단이기도 합니다.

Design can also inflict vulnerability

디자인은 고려대상에서 제외된 특정 그룹의 사람들에게

on a group whose needs aren't considered.

상처를 줄 수 있습니다.

So today, I want your perceptions challenged.

그러므로 저는 여러분의 인식에 도전장을 내고자 합니다.

Who are we not designing for?

우리가 디자인에서 배제하는 사람은 누구인가요?

How can we amplify their voices

어떻게 우리가 그들의 목소리와 경험을

and their experiences?

더 잘 들리게 할 수 있을까요?

What is the next step?

다음 단계는 무엇인가요?

Design is an enormous privilege,

디자인은 대단한 특권이지만

but it is a bigger responsibility.

더 큰 책임이 뒤따릅니다.

I want you to open your eyes.
