My day starts just like yours.

When I wake up in the morning,

I check my phone,

and then I have a cup of coffee.

But then my day truly starts.

It may not be like yours, because I live my life as an artwork.

アート作品として生きる私の一日は 皆さんのものとは違うかもしれません

Picture yourself in a giant jewelry box

想像してください あなたは巨大な宝石箱の中にいます

with all the beautiful things that you have ever seen in your life.

そこには今まで目にした美しい物が すべて詰め込まれています

Then imagine that your body is a canvas.

そして あなたの体がキャンバスです

And on that canvas,

そのキャンバスに

you have a mission to create a masterpiece

巨大な宝石箱にある物を使って 最高傑作を作り上げるのが

using the contents of your giant jewelry box.

あなたのミッションです

Once you've created your masterpiece,

そして傑作が仕上がると こう思うわけです

you might think, "Wow, I created that.

「ついに できあがったぞ

This is who I am today."

これが今日の私」

Then you would pick up your house keys,

そして家の鍵を手にして

walk out the door into the real world,

現実世界への扉を開き 外へ出ます

maybe take public transport to the center of the town ...

公共交通機関で 都心部に向かうかもしれません

Possibly walk along the streets or even go shopping.

あるいは 街中を歩いたり ショッピングに出かけるかもしれません

That's my life, every day.

私は日々 こんな風に過ごしています

When I walk out the door,

一歩 外に出れば

these artworks are me.

私はこうした作品になります

I am art.

私自身がアートなのです

I have lived as art my entire adult life.

大人になってからずっと アートとして生きてきました

Living as art is how I became myself.

アートとして生きることで 私は自分自身になれたのです

I was brought up in a small village called Fillongley, in England,

私が育ったのは イギリスの フィロングリーという小さな村です

and it was last mentioned in the "Domesday Book,"

その名が最後に記されたのは 世界初の土地台帳というくらい辺鄙な場所です

so that's the mentality.

(Laughter)

I was raised by my grandparents,

私は 古物商を営む祖父母に

and they were antiques dealers,

育てられました

so I grew up surrounded by history and beautiful things.

I had the most amazing dress-up box.

とても素敵な化粧箱も持っていました

So as you can imagine, it started then.

I moved to London when I was 17 to become a model.

And then I went to study photography.

そして写真の勉強も始めました

I wasn't really happy with myself at the time,

so I was always looking for escapism.

いつも現実逃避ばかりしていたのです

I studied the works of David LaChapelle

デビッド・ラシャペルや スティーブン・アーノルドの作品を学び

and Steven Arnold,

photographers who both curated and created worlds

この２人の写真家が 紡ぎ出した世界に

that were mind-blowing to me.

私は大きな衝撃を受けました

So I decided one day to cross over from the superficial fashion world

それで 転向を決意し 浅薄なファッション界から

to the superficial art world.

浅薄なアート界へと移りました

(Laughter)

I decided to live my life as a work of art.

私は人生そのものを アート作品にすることにしました

I spend hours, sometimes months, making things.

何時間も 時には何か月もかけて いろんな物を作りました

My go-to tool is a safety pin, like this --

そこで頼りになるのが安全ピンです こんな風に―

(Laughter)

They're never big enough.

大きすぎることはなく―

(Laughter)

（笑）

And I use my fabrics time and time again,

生地は繰り返して利用し

so I recycle everything that I use.

何でもリサイクルします

When I get dressed I'm guided by color, texture and shape.

色 質感 そして形に導かれ 私は服をまといます

I rarely have a theme.

テーマを決めることは稀です

I find beautiful objects from all over the world,

世界中で美しい物を見つけてきては

and I curate them into 3-D tapestries

それを３次元のタペストリーに仕立て

over a base layer that covers my whole body shape ...

体をすっぽり覆うインナーに かぶせるのです

because I'm not very happy with my body.

この体型はどうも気に入らなくて

(Laughs)

I ask myself, "Should I take something off

私は自問自答します 「何か外すべき？

or should I put something on?

それとも何か付ける？

100 pieces, maybe?"

100個くらい？」

And sometimes, I do that.

そして時々はそうします

I promise you it's not too uncomfortable --

そんなに着心地は悪くないんですよ

well, just a little --

まあ ちょっとは―

(Laughter)

I might have a safety pin poking at me sometimes

こうやってお話ししていても

when I'm having a conversation with you,

安全ピンが時々 チクッとしたりもして

so I'll kind of go off --

嫌になったりもしますけど

(Laughter)

It usually takes me about 20 minutes to get ready,

身支度にかかるのは いつも20分くらいです

which nobody ever believes.

信じられないと言われますが

It's true --

本当なんですよ

sometimes.

So, it's my version of a t-shirt and jeans.

私にとってはＴシャツと ジーンズみたいなものです

(Laughter)

When I get dressed, I build like an architect.

建築家のごとく 衣装を組み立てていきます

I carefully place things till I feel they belong.

どこに何を配するかよく考え しっくり落ち着くようにします

Then, I get a lot of my ideas from lucid dreaming.

明晰夢からも たくさんの着想を得ます

I actually go to sleep to come up with my ideas,

着想を得るために 実際に眠って

and I've taught myself to wake up to write them down.

起きてそれを書き留める ようにしています

I wear things till they fall apart,

壊れる限界まで 物を使い込んでは

and then, I give them a new life.

それらに新しい命を吹き込みます

The gold outfit, for example --

例えば この黄金の服は

it was the outfit that I wore to the Houses of Parliament in London.

ロンドンの国会議事堂に 着て行ったのですが

It's made of armor, sequins and broken jewelry,

鎧とスパンコール 壊れた宝石で できています

and I was the first person to wear armor to Parliament

国会に鎧姿で現れたのは 17世紀にオリバー・クロムウェルが

since Oliver Cromwell banned it in the 17th century.

国会での鎧着用を禁止して以来 私が初めてでした

Things don't need to be expensive to be beautiful.

美しくあるためには お金をかける必要はありません

Try making outfits out of bin liners or trash you found out on the streets.

ゴミ袋や街に落ちているゴミから 服を作って ご覧なさい

You never know,

もしかしたら『VOGUE(ヴォーグ)』で 紹介されるかもしれませんよ

they might end up on the pages of "Vogue."

There's over 6,000 pieces in my collection,

私のコレクションは６千点以上あり

ranging from 2,000-year-old Roman rings to ancient Buddhist artifacts.

２千年前のローマ時代の指輪から 古代仏教の遺物まであります

I believe in sharing what I do and what I have with others,

自分のなすこと 持っているものを 他者と共有することは

so I decided to create an art exhibition,

重要だと考えているので 展覧会を開くことにしました

which is currently traveling to museums around the world.

It contains an army of me --

life-size sculptures as you can see behind me,

they are my life, really.

They're kind of like 3-D tapestries of my existence as living as art.

生きるアート作品である私を ３次元のタペストリーにしたようなもので

They contain plastic crystals mixed with diamonds,

beer cans and royal silks all in one look.

ビール缶に最高のシルクが 一着に混在しています

I like the fact that the viewer can never make the assumption

私が気に入っているのは 見る人が どれが本物でどれが偽物か

about what's real and what's fake.

I find it important to explore and share cultures through my works.

I use clothing as a means to investigate

私にとって服は 世界中の人について学び

and appreciate people from all over the world.

その存在に感謝する手段です

Sometimes, people think I'm a performer or a drag queen.

私のことを ただのパフォーマンスだとか ドラァグクイーンと言う人もいます

I'm not.

でも それは違います

Although my life appears to be a performance,

私の日々がパフォーマンスのように 見えたとしても

it's not.

そうではないんです

It's very real.

現実に根ざしています

People respond to me as they would any other type of artwork.

ほかのアート作品と同様に 私を見て 人は何らかの反応を示します

Many people are fascinated and engaged.

多くの人が魅力的だと言い 関心を持ってくれます

Some people walk around me, staring, shy at first.

最初は遠巻きにじっと見て 恥ずかしそうにしていても

Then they come up to me and they say they love or absolutely hate what I do.

最後には近くに来て 好きか大嫌いか言ってくれます

I sometimes respond, and other times I let the art talk for itself.

自ら応じることもあれば アートに語らせておくこともあります

The most annoying thing in the world is when people want to touch the artwork.

一番嫌なのは アート作品に触りたがる人です

But I understand.

気持ちは分かりますけどね

But like a lot of contemporary art,

多くの現代アートと同じで

many people are dismissive.

多くの人は否定的です

Some people are critical,

批判する人もいれば

others are abusive.

罵倒する人もいます

I think it comes from the fear of the different --

思うに それは違うこと つまり未知のことへの

the unknown.

恐れから来るものでしょう

There are so many reactions to what I do,

私がすることに対して いろんな反応がありますが

and I've just learned not to take them personally.

個人攻撃だと 思わないようにしています

I've never lived as Daniel Lismore, the person.

ダニエル・リズモア その人としてではなく

I've lived as Daniel Lismore, the artwork.

アート作品のリズモアとして していることですから

And I've faced every obstacle as an artwork.

アート作品として 様々な障壁にぶつかってきました

It can be hard ...

辛いこともあります

especially if your wardrobe takes up a 40-foot container,

何と言っても衣装類が 40フィートコンテナ１個と

three storage units and 30 boxes from IKEA --

貸倉庫３つ分と IKEAの箱30個分ありますから

(Laughter)

（笑）

and sometimes, it can be very difficult, getting into cars,

それに時々 車に乗り込むのも 難しいこともあります

and sometimes --

それから―

well, this morning I didn't fit through my bathroom door,

今朝は洗面所のドアを 通り抜けられなくて

so that was a problem.

困りましたね

(Laughter)

What does it mean to be yourself?

自分らしくあるとはどういうことか？

People say it all the time,

よく言われることですが

but what does it truly mean,

それは本当はどういう意味で

and why does it matter?

なぜそれが重要なのでしょう？

How does life change when you choose to be unapologetically yourself?

堂々と自分自身であることを選んだら 生き方がどう変わるでしょうか？

I've had to face struggles and triumphs whilst living my life as art.

アートとして生きることで 葛藤にも成功にも向き合わされました

I've been put on private jets

プライベート・ジェットに乗ったことも

and flown around the world.

世界を飛び回ったこともありますし

My work's been displayed in prestigious museums,

私の作品が権威ある博物館に 展示されたこともあります

and I've had the opportunity --

そんな機会があったから―

that is my grandparents, by the way,

ちなみに こちらが 私を育ててくれた祖父母で

they're the people that raised me,

and there I am --

ここに私もいます

(Laughs)

So I've been put on private jets, flown around the world,

プライベート・ジェットに乗り 世界も飛び回りましたが

and yet, it's not been that easy

それでも簡単ではありませんでした

because at times, I've been homeless,

時にはホームレスになったり

I've been spat at,

唾を吐きかけられたり

I've been abused, sometimes daily,

毎日のように 嫌がらせされたりもしました

bullied my entire life,

これまでの人生でずっといじめられ

rejected by countless individuals,

数えきれないくらいの人に拒否され

and I've been stabbed.

刺されたこともあります

But what hurt the most

でも一番傷ついたのは

was being put on the "Worst Dressed" list.

ワーストドレッサー賞に 選ばれたことです

(Laughter)

（笑）

It can be hard, being yourself,

自分らしくいると 辛いこともありますが

but I've found it's the best way.

でも それが最善の方法だと思います

There's the "Worst Dressed."

これが「ワーストドレッサー」です

(Laughs)

As the quote goes, "Everyone else is already taken."

「自分以外の役は もう既に決まっている」のです

I've come to realize that confidence is a concept you can choose.

分かったのは 自信は 自分で選びとれるものだということ

I've come to realize that authenticity is necessary, and it's powerful.

そして本物であることは 必要であり 力強いということです

I've tried to spend time being like other people.

私も皆と同じようにしようとしました

It didn't work.

でもダメだったんです

It's a lot of hard work, not being yourself.

自分らしくいられないのは すごく大変なことです

I have a few questions for you all.

皆さんに考えてほしいことがあります

Who are you?

あなたは どんな人ですか？

How many versions of you are there?

何種類の自分がいますか？

And I have one final question:

そして最後に―

Are you using them all to your advantage?

そのすべてを うまく使いこなしていますか？

In reality, everyone is capable of creating their own masterpiece.

誰でも 自分自身の最高傑作を 作ることができます

You should try it sometime.
