My day starts just like yours.

When I wake up in the morning,

I check my phone,

and then I have a cup of coffee.

커피 한 잔을 해요.

But then my day truly starts.

이제 진짜 저의 하루가 시작됩니다.

It may not be like yours, because I live my life as an artwork.

저는 예술작품으로 삶을 살고 있으니 여러분들의 일상과 다를 겁니다.

Picture yourself in a giant jewelry box

커다란 보석상자 안에 있는 여러분의 모습을 그려보세요.

with all the beautiful things that you have ever seen in your life.

여러분이 살면서 봤던 모든 예쁜 것들과 함께 있는 모습이에요.

Then imagine that your body is a canvas.

그리고 여러분의 몸이 캔버스라고 상상해보시죠.

And on that canvas,

그 캔버스 위에

you have a mission to create a masterpiece

멋진 작품을 만들어야 할 미션이 주어졌습니다.

using the contents of your giant jewelry box.

커다란 보석상자 안의 보석들을 이용해서 말이죠.

Once you've created your masterpiece,

멋진 작품을 완성하고 나면

you might think, "Wow, I created that.

여러분들은 "세상에! 내가 이걸 만들었어."

This is who I am today."

이게 바로 나라고!" 라고 생각하실지도 모르죠.

Then you would pick up your house keys,

이제 현관 열쇠를 집어들고

walk out the door into the real world,

문을 열고 세상을 향해 나아가는 거예요.

maybe take public transport to the center of the town ...

시내까지 대중교통을 이용할 수도 있고

Possibly walk along the streets or even go shopping.

거리를 거닐거나 쇼핑을 할 수도 있겠네요.

That's my life, every day.

그게 바로 저의 일상이에요.

When I walk out the door,

제가 문을 나설 때

these artworks are me.

이 예술작품은 바로 저예요.

I am art.

저는 예술이 된거죠.

I have lived as art my entire adult life.

저는 성인이 된 후 쭉 이렇게 살았어요.

Living as art is how I became myself.

예술작품으로 살면서 제 본연의 모습을 찾았어요.

I was brought up in a small village called Fillongley, in England,

저는 영국의 필롱리라는 작은 마을에서 자랐습니다.

and it was last mentioned in the "Domesday Book,"

중세 시대의 토지 대장에서 언급된 곳이에요.

so that's the mentality.

그게 제 마음가짐입니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I was raised by my grandparents,

저는 조부모님 밑에서 자랐는데

and they were antiques dealers,

두 분은 골동품 가게를 운영하셨어요.

so I grew up surrounded by history and beautiful things.

저는 자연스럽게 역사적이고 아름다운 물건을 보며 컸어요.

I had the most amazing dress-up box.

전 엄청난 옷장을 가졌었죠.

So as you can imagine, it started then.

그때부터 시작된거에요.

I moved to London when I was 17 to become a model.

17살에 모델이 되려고 런던으로 갔어요.

And then I went to study photography.

그리고는 사진을 공부했어요.

I wasn't really happy with myself at the time,

그 때 당시, 저는 제 자신에게 만족할 수 없었어요.

so I was always looking for escapism.

늘 현실도피할 궁리만 했어요.

I studied the works of David LaChapelle

사진작가이면서 큐리에이터였던

and Steven Arnold,

데이비드 라샤펠이나 스티븐 아놀드의

photographers who both curated and created worlds

작품을 공부하는 게

that were mind-blowing to me.

너무나 짜릿했어요.

So I decided one day to cross over from the superficial fashion world

그러던 어느날 저는 피상적인 패션을

to the superficial art world.

피상적인 예술로 바꾸야겠다는 결심을 했어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I decided to live my life as a work of art.

스스로 예술 작품으로 살아야겠다는 결심을 한 거죠.

I spend hours, sometimes months, making things.

때로는 작업이 몇 시간에서 몇 달까지도 걸렸어요.

My go-to tool is a safety pin, like this --

전 이런 안전핀을 늘상 착용하고 있어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

They're never big enough.

충분히 크지 않아 아쉬울 뿐이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And I use my fabrics time and time again,

제 의상은 몇 번이고 재사용합니다.

so I recycle everything that I use.

제가 사용하는 모든 것을 재활용해요.

When I get dressed I'm guided by color, texture and shape.

옷을 입을 땐 주로 옷의 색감과 질감, 형태를 고려해서 골라요.

I rarely have a theme.

정해진 컨셉은 거의 없는 편이에요.

I find beautiful objects from all over the world,

온 세상에서 아름다운 물건을 찾아서

and I curate them into 3-D tapestries

저의 몸 전체를 잘 감춘 레이어링 위에

over a base layer that covers my whole body shape ...

마치 3D 태피스트리처럼 물건들을 제 몸 위에 전시합니다.

because I'm not very happy with my body.

제 몸에 그다지 만족하지 않기도 하고요.

(Laughs)

(웃음)

I ask myself, "Should I take something off

"뭔가를 좀 빼거나 더해야 할까?"

or should I put something on?

"한 100개 정도 더?

100 pieces, maybe?"

라고 스스로에게 묻고

And sometimes, I do that.

떄로는 정말 그렇게 해요.

I promise you it's not too uncomfortable --

이게 사실, 그렇게 엄청나게 불편하진 않아요.

well, just a little --

그냥, 아주 조금..?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I might have a safety pin poking at me sometimes

제가 여러분들과 대화를 하고 있는 지금

when I'm having a conversation with you,

가끔씩 안전핀이 제 몸을 찌르거나 하는 정도인데요.

so I'll kind of go off --

어쨌든 저는 자리를 뜰 거니까요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

It usually takes me about 20 minutes to get ready,

준비하는데 평균 20분정도가 걸린다고 하면

which nobody ever believes.

아무도 믿지 않아요.

It's true --

정말이에요.

sometimes.

가끔 그래요.

So, it's my version of a t-shirt and jeans.

저한텐 이게 티셔츠랑 청바지인 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

When I get dressed, I build like an architect.

제가 옷을 입는 건, 건축가가 집을 짓는 것과 비슷하게

I carefully place things till I feel they belong.

조심스럽게 제 자리에 맞춰서 물건을 올려요.

Then, I get a lot of my ideas from lucid dreaming.

저는 자각몽에서 많은 아이디를 얻는데요.

I actually go to sleep to come up with my ideas,

아이디를 얻기위해 잠을 자기도 해요.

and I've taught myself to wake up to write them down.

깨어나면 꿈 속에서 얻은 생각들을 기록합니다.

I wear things till they fall apart,

물건은 망가질 때까지는 쓰고

and then, I give them a new life.

망가지면 새롭게 재사용해요.

The gold outfit, for example --

여기 금장식의 의상은

it was the outfit that I wore to the Houses of Parliament in London.

제가 런던의 국회의사당에서 입었던 옷입니다.

It's made of armor, sequins and broken jewelry,

갑옷과 스팽글과 부서진 보석을 이용해서 만들었어요.

and I was the first person to wear armor to Parliament

17세기에 올리버 크롬웰이 국회의사당에서 갑옷 착용을 금지했는데

since Oliver Cromwell banned it in the 17th century.

그 후에 처음으로 국회의사당에서 갑옷을 입은 사람이 저에요.

Things don't need to be expensive to be beautiful.

아름다워지는데 많은 비용이 들 필요가 있나요.

Try making outfits out of bin liners or trash you found out on the streets.

거리에서 발견한 쓰레기 봉지나 쓰레기로 의상을 만드는 것도 가능해요.

You never know,

그 의상이 "보그"지에 실리는

they might end up on the pages of "Vogue."

일이 생길 수도 있습니다.

There's over 6,000 pieces in my collection,

2000년 전의 로마 시대 반지와 고대 불교 공예품을 포함해서

ranging from 2,000-year-old Roman rings to ancient Buddhist artifacts.

제 컬렉션은 6000벌이 넘습니다.

I believe in sharing what I do and what I have with others,

제가 하는 일과 제가 가진 것들을 사람들과 나누고 싶어서

so I decided to create an art exhibition,

전시회를 열기 시작했습니다.

which is currently traveling to museums around the world.

현재 제 전시물은 여러 박물관에서 순회중이에요.

It contains an army of me --

제 뒤에 보이는 실물 크기의 조형물인

life-size sculptures as you can see behind me,

"나의 군대"컬렉션이 포함되어 있습니다.

they're here --

여기에 있죠.

they are my life, really.

이게 바로 저의 삶이에요.

They're kind of like 3-D tapestries of my existence as living as art.

예술품으로 사는 제 존재가 3D 태피스트리로 표현된 거죠.

They contain plastic crystals mixed with diamonds,

플라스틱 크리스탈과 다이아몬드가 섞여있고

beer cans and royal silks all in one look.

맥주병과 값비싼 실크가 하나의 의상에 다 들어가 있어요.

I like the fact that the viewer can never make the assumption

어떤 것이 진짜고 가짜인지 눈으로

about what's real and what's fake.

식별하기 어렵다는 점이 좋아요.

I find it important to explore and share cultures through my works.

제 작품을 통해서 다채로운 문화를 느끼는 점도 중요하다고 생각해요.

I use clothing as a means to investigate

저는 의복을 세상 모든 사람들에 대해

and appreciate people from all over the world.

연구하고 알아가는 방법으로 사용해요.

Sometimes, people think I'm a performer or a drag queen.

때로는 사람들이 저를 행위 예술가나 드랙퀸(여장남자)으로 생각하는데

I'm not.

그렇지 않습니다.

Although my life appears to be a performance,

제 삶이 행위 예술처럼 보일 순 있겠지만

it's not.

아닙니다.

It's very real.

이 것이 저의 삶 그 자체입니다.

People respond to me as they would any other type of artwork.

사람들은 예술 작품을 대하듯 저를 대합니다.

Many people are fascinated and engaged.

많은 사람들은 감탄하며 빠져들기도 하고

Some people walk around me, staring, shy at first.

어떤 이들은 처음엔 부끄러워서 저를 바라보기만 하면서 제 주변을 서성이다가

Then they come up to me and they say they love or absolutely hate what I do.

저에게 와서 너무 멋있다거나 정말 불쾌하다는 등의 말을 하기도 합니다.

I sometimes respond, and other times I let the art talk for itself.

저는 대꾸를 하기도 하고, 예술이 스스로 말하도록 내버려 두기도 합니다.

The most annoying thing in the world is when people want to touch the artwork.

사람들이 만지려고 할 때가 가장 짜증스러운 순간이에요.

But I understand.

이해는 합니다만.

But like a lot of contemporary art,

현대 예술에 대해서 많은 사람들이 그러하듯

many people are dismissive.

다수는 경멸스러워하기도 하고

Some people are critical,

비판적인 사람들도 있고

others are abusive.

폭력적인 반응도 있어요.

I think it comes from the fear of the different --

이런 반응은 '다름에 대한, 알지 못하는 것에 대한 공포심'

the unknown.

에서 나왔을 것이라고 생각해요.

There are so many reactions to what I do,

제가 하는 것에 대한 수많은 반응들을 보면서

and I've just learned not to take them personally.

저는 기분나쁘게 생각하지 않으려고 합니다.

I've never lived as Daniel Lismore, the person.

저는 다니엘 리스모어라는 개인으로 산 것이 아니라

I've lived as Daniel Lismore, the artwork.

다니엘 리스모어라는 예술품으로 살았습니다.

And I've faced every obstacle as an artwork.

예술작품으로써 모든 시련들을 견뎠습니다.

It can be hard ...

힘들기도 하죠.

especially if your wardrobe takes up a 40-foot container,

옷장을 옮기려면 10미터가 넘는 화물 컨테이너와 3개의 큰 저장창고에

three storage units and 30 boxes from IKEA --

30개의 이케아 박스가 필요하면 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

and sometimes, it can be very difficult, getting into cars,

어쩔 때는 차에 타는 것조차도 너무 어렵고

and sometimes --

그리고 오늘 아침에는,

well, this morning I didn't fit through my bathroom door,

제가 화장실 문을 빠져나갈 수 없더라고요.

so that was a problem.

큰 문제였지요.

(Laughter)

What does it mean to be yourself?

나 자신으로 사는 것은 어떤 의미일까요?

People say it all the time,

사람들은 늘 이 말을 하는데

but what does it truly mean,

이게 정말 무슨 뜻이고

and why does it matter?

왜 중요한 걸까요?

How does life change when you choose to be unapologetically yourself?

당당히 나 자신으로 사는 것을 선택하면 삶이 어떻게 바뀔까요?

I've had to face struggles and triumphs whilst living my life as art.

예술작품으로 사는 것은 좌절감과 환희를 모두 겪는 일입니다.

I've been put on private jets

저는 개인용 제트기를 타고

and flown around the world.

세상을 날아다녔어요.

My work's been displayed in prestigious museums,

제 작품들이 유명한 박물관에 전시되고

and I've had the opportunity --

저는 기회를 얻었지요.

that is my grandparents, by the way,

저기 두 분이 저의 조부모님이시고

they're the people that raised me,

두 분이 저를 추켜세워주셨어요.

and there I am --

저건 제 모습이네요.

(Laughs)

(웃음)

So I've been put on private jets, flown around the world,

제가 개인용 제트기를 타고 여기 저기 날아다녔다고 했었죠

and yet, it's not been that easy

물론 모든 것이 쉽진 않았어요

because at times, I've been homeless,

저는 노숙자일 때도 있었고

I've been spat at,

사람들이 저에게 침을 뱉는 일도 있었고

I've been abused, sometimes daily,

때로는 거의 매일 누군가에게 맞거나

bullied my entire life,

괴롭힘을 당하는 인생을 살았고

rejected by countless individuals,

사람들에게 수도 없이 거절당하며

and I've been stabbed.

칼에 찔리기도 했습니다.

But what hurt the most

하지만 제가 가장 상처를 받았던 순간은

was being put on the "Worst Dressed" list.

"워스트 드레서"에 뽑힌 거예요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

It can be hard, being yourself,

자연스러운 나로 사는 것이 어려울 수도 있겠지만

but I've found it's the best way.

나로서 사는 것이 저에게는 최고의 방법이었습니다.

There's the "Worst Dressed."

"워스트 드레서"로 사는 것 말이죠.

(Laughs)

As the quote goes, "Everyone else is already taken."

"다른 누군가는 남이 이미 되어있다"는 오스카 와일드의 명언이 있죠.

I've come to realize that confidence is a concept you can choose.

자신감은 여러분이 선택할 수 있는 것이라고 생각해요.

I've come to realize that authenticity is necessary, and it's powerful.

진정성은 꼭 필요하고, 힘이 있다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

I've tried to spend time being like other people.

저는 다른 사람들처럼 살아보려고도 해봤지만

It didn't work.

잘 되지 않았습니다.

It's a lot of hard work, not being yourself.

다른 사람으로 살아가려고 애쓰는 것은 정말 힘든 일이에요.

I have a few questions for you all.

이제 여러분들께 질문이 있습니다.

Who are you?

당신은 어떤 사람인가요?

How many versions of you are there?

당신은 얼마나 다양한 모습을 가지고 있나요?

And I have one final question:

마지막 질문이 남아 있네요.

Are you using them all to your advantage?

혹시 그 모습들을 오롯이 나를 위해서 쓰고 있나요

In reality, everyone is capable of creating their own masterpiece.

모든 사람들은 자신만의 특별한 예술 작품을 만들 수 있습니다.
