I'm often asked

よく聞かれます

why I do art,

なぜ私はアートをするのか？

what do I want to say with my art photography,

and what is the use of it?

Once in a while I start to worry

時折 私は不安になり始めます

how to actually measure the impact from the art

like we do with medicine or technology,

医学や技術みたいに

where we can see the results and calculate it.

結果をみて それを計測できるか？と

Then I would finally be able to explain to my mother my art

そうすれば 私は母に私のアートを 実際の数字を使って

with real numbers.

説明できるようになるのに

But my art is so far from metrics,

でも 私のアートは数字とは程遠く

and moreover, my photography is widely exposing the theme of escapism.

しかも 私の写真は 現実逃避の主題を むき出しにしています

My theory is that all of us

私のセオリーでは

struggle sometimes to escape

人は誰もが何かから逃げようともがいて

in order to analyze our reality,

現実を 分析したり 現実に感謝したり 現実を変えようと思っています

appreciate it or change.

I don't work with daily life as it is,

私は 日常生活をありのまま 扱うことはしません

and I'm not a documentary photographer

そして私は 通常の意味の ドキュメンタリー写真は撮影しません

in the common sense.

But I am a documentary photographer

でも 違った意味では

in a different sense.

私はドキュメンタリー写真家です

I document dreams.

私は夢をドキュメントします

I work with daily life as it could be,

私は 日常生活を可能性として

as I imagine it.

I am a daydreamer, but at the same time I love things that are authentic

and deal with our innermost nature,

which I would never want to escape from.

I adore complicated personalities,

and real life inspires me to create my images.

Real life inspires our escape,

and sometimes that escape is very needed.

I believe heroes are not created easily,

and I choose to work with individuals

who are survivors

and facing everyday routines

that are not always full of color,

people who are on their way to a better life,

fighting against life circumstances.

Why do I choose people like that for my models?

なぜ私はそのような人々を モデルに選ぶのでしょうか？

Because I've been in that position myself,

それは 私自身が そういう立場を経験して

when I had to learn how to survive in real life.

現実世界を生き抜く方法を 学ばねばならない時期があったからです

I was a student living abroad in London.

かつて私はロンドン在住の留学生でした

I was working at two places at the same time as a waitress.

私は ウェイトレスとして 同時に２箇所で働いていました

Obviously that wasn't my dream job,

明らかに私の夢の仕事とは違いましたが

but I decided to play a game

私は ごっこ遊びをしようと決めました

where I imagined that I am taking a role in a film,

想像の中の私は 映画の役を演じていて

and in the film I am a waitress,

私が役を担う 映画のウェイトレスは

and I need to act great.

最高の演技をしなければなりません

I used to dye my hair and brows to gingerette,

そこで私は 髪と眉毛を赤毛に染めて

I changed my hair to curly perm,

I lost weight

and made myself believe

I am just a character acting in a film.

That isn't forever,

that is all just temporary.

That helped me a lot.

It motivated me to change my life

and take a hard time as a game.

Now, as an artist,

I am creating different lives for my models

私は モデルたちのために 様々な人生を創造しています

in order to give them the experience of being someone else in reality.

そうすることで モデルたちに 実際に 他の誰かになる経験をさせるのです

Through the photographic process,

写真撮影の過程を通して

all of my models become like silent movie actors.

私のモデルは サイレント映画の 俳優のようになります

They are captured at the moment

彼らが全く別人になりきったと思う瞬間を

when they believe in being someone else entirely.

写真に捉えるのです

In order to create a new reality in its entirety,

全体として新たな現実を創造するために

I physically create every single thing in my work,

私は 文字通り自分の作品中の 全アイテムを自作します

sometimes from outfits to the stage.

時には 衣装から舞台までです

Because I work with analogues,

なぜなら私が扱うのはアナログの世界なので

and I don't make any digital manipulations to my photographs,

自分の写真には一切 デジタル補正はしません

I need everything to take place in reality,

全てが現実に起る必要があるのです

in spite of the fact that nowadays,

昨今 実際のところ

digitally, you can create pretty much everything.

デジタル技術で ほぼなんでも作れてしまいます

I don't like this path.

私はそれを好みません

Even if that reaches perfection,

デジタル技術で完璧なものが作れたとしても

I see the beauty in authenticity of making,

創作の真実の中に 私は美を見出すのです

and that's impossible without flaws.

そしてそこには 欠点がつきものです

A digitally manipulated photograph

デジタル技術で補正された写真は

is not true for me.

私にとっては真実ではありません

It doesn't capture anything real.

そこには 真実は何も捉えられていません

It's not experienced, not motivating.

実体験ではなく モチベーションもありません

It's like, instead of going traveling,

さしずめ 旅に出ることなく

you look at someone else's travel photographs.

他人の旅行写真を見るようなものです

What I find so exciting

私がとてもワクワクするのは

is the ability to make people's dreams of being someone else a reality.

他人に入れ替わるという夢を 実現する能力です

That's like a drug

まるで覚せい剤のように

which pushes me to keep working,

測定基準がなくても

even without metrics.

作業を続けてしまうのです

One of my models

私のモデルの一人は

had always dreamed of being seen as a warrior,

いつも 戦士として見られることを 夢に見ていました

but she wasn't able to do sports because of her health problems.

彼女は健康に問題を抱えていて スポーツができなかったのです

Half a year ago, she passed away

半年前に 彼女は亡くなりました

from heart disease at the age of 22.

心臓疾患が原因で 22歳でした

But two days before her death,

でも 彼女が亡くなる２日前に

the images we spent months working on together

私たちが何ヶ月もかけて 一緒に取り組んだ

of her as a warrior she dreamed of becoming

were published at a large exhibition in Milan by Vogue Magazine.

All her life was about overcoming.

Before she died, she had known

that thousands of people saw her image from the land of escapism

and believed in her as a brave and fearless warrior.

自分のことを何物をも恐れない 戦士だと信じてくれるということを

For my work, I invite people to play a game

私は自分の作品のために 人々を招いて ゲームをしてもらいます

like we all used to as children

ちょうど私たち誰もが子供の頃にしたように

when we pretend to be someone else

別人になりきる時

and that process made us really happy.

そのプロセスは私たちを 本当にハッピーにしてくれます

To my mind it is important for grown-ups.

それが大人たちには重要だと 私は思います

We need these transformations

これをアートという名で実現するため

to enact this in the name of art.

私たちには こういった変身が必要です

It gives us the very real feeling of being important and powerful

そうすることで 私たちは自分が大切で 力があると実感することができて

in order to influence our reality.

実社会でも影響を 及ぼすことができるのです

I know this from my own personal experience.

私は自分の個人的な経験から このことを知っています

I have had so many versions of myself

私は いく通りもの自分を撮影し

through my self-portraits

自分の肖像写真を通して

that I've been many different characters.

様々なキャラクターになってきました

Being someone else in the land of escapism

現実逃避の土地で 他人を演じても

doesn't exactly give us numbers that we can gauge,

実測できる数値が得られる訳ではありませんが

but it's like a real lost form of magic

それは 真に失われた魔法の形であり

which exists but can't be measured.

実存しても測ることはできないのです

There is a unique power in art

アートにはユニークな力があって

to transform and lift our limits.

本来の姿を変え 私たちの限界を取り払います

Art creates what I call a conjured life,

アートが創り出すのは いわば魔法のかかった人生であり

which helps our existence

それが私たちの存在を救い

and pushes, motivates and inspires us to dwell

私たちの存在を後押しし 駆り立て 思いにふけることを励まし

and express ourselves

なんの基準や数値がなくても

without metrics or calculations.

私たちは表現できるのです
