Naif Al-Mutawa: Superheroes inspired by Islam

In October 2010,

the Justice League of America will be teaming up with The 99.

अमरीकी न्यायपालिका जुडेगी 'द ९९' से।

Icons like Batman,

तमाम सुपरहीरो जैसे कि बैटमैन,

Superman, Wonder Woman and their colleagues

सुपरमैन, वंडर वुमन, और उनके बाकी साथी

will be teaming up with icons Jabbar, Noora,

दूसरे सुपरहीरो जैसे कि जब्बर, नूरा,

Jami and their colleagues.

जामी और बाकी साथियों से जुडेंगे।

It's a story of intercultural intersections,

and what better group

to have this conversation

like the prophets, all the superheroes

Superman's parents die on Krypton

Bruce Wayne, who becomes Batman,

loses his parents at the age of six in Gotham City.

Spiderman is raised

स्पाइडरमैन का पालन-पोषण

by his aunt and uncle.

And all of them, just like the prophets who get their message

from God through Gabriel,

get their message from above.

Peter Parker is in a library in Manhattan

when the spider descends from above

जब एक मकडी ऊपर से आती है

and gives him his message through a bite.

और अपना संदेश उसे डंक मार कर देती है।

Bruce Wayne is in his bedroom

ब्रूस वेन अपने बेडरूम में है

when a big bat flies over his head,

जब एक विशालकाय चमगादड उसके सर के ऊपर से उडता है,

and he sees it as an omen to become Batman.

और ये उसे बैटमैन बनने के लिये प्रेरित करता चिन्ह लगता है।

Superman is not only sent to Earth

सुपरमैन को सिर्फ़ पृथ्वी पर

from the heavens, or Krypton,

स्वर्ग या क्रिप्टान से भेजा ही नहीं गया,

but he's sent in a pod, much like Moses was on the Nile.

बल्कि उसे एक पत्ते में भेजा गया, जैसे नील नदी पर मोजेस को।

And you hear the voice of his father, Jor-El,

saying to Earth, "I have sent to you my only son."

These are clearly biblical archetypes,

and the thinking behind that was to create

positive, globally-resonating storylines

that could be tied to the same things

that other people were pulling mean messages out of

because then the person that's using religion for the wrong purpose

just becomes a bad man with a bad message.

And it's only by linking positive things

that the negative can be delinked.

This is the kind of thinking that went into

ऐसी ही कुछ सोच पर आधारित है

creating The 99.

'द ९९'।

The 99 references the 99 attributes of Allah in the Koran,

द ९९ कुरान में दिये गये अल्लाह के ९९ गुणों की ओर इशारा करती है,

things like generosity and mercy and foresight and wisdom

जैसे कि उदारता, दया, दूरदृष्टि, और अक्लमंदी

and dozens of others that no two people in the world would disagree about.

और दर्ज़नों बाकी गुण जिन्हें दुनिया में कोई भी अस्वीकार नहीं करेगा,

It doesn't matter what your religion is;

चाहे उसका कोई भी धर्म क्यों न हो।

even if you're an atheist, you don't raise your kid telling him, you know,

यदि आप नास्तिक भी हैं, तो भी आप अपने बच्चे को ये नहीं सिखाते कि, देखो,

"Make sure you lie three times a day."

Those are basic human values.

And so the backstory of The 99

तो 'द ९९' की कहानी है

takes place in 1258,

सन १२५८ की,

which history tells us the Mongols invaded Baghdad and destroyed it.

जब इतिहास के हिसाब से मंगोलों ने बग़दाद को मटियामेट कर दिया था।

All the books from Bait al-Hikma library,

बैत-अल-हिक्मा पुस्तकालय की सारी किताबें,

the most famous library in its day, were thrown in the Tigris River,

उस ज़माने की सबसे प्रसिद्ध पुस्तकालय को, टिग्रिस नदी में फेंक दिया गया,

and the Tigris changes color with ink.

और टिग्रिस का रंग स्याही जैसा हो गया था।

It's a story passed on generation after generation.

ये कहानी पीढी दर पीढी चली आ रही है।

I rewrote that story,

मैने वो कहानी फ़िर से लिखी।

and in my version, the librarians find out that this is going to happen --

मेरे विवरण में, पुस्तकालय वालों को पता लग गया कि ऐसा होने वाला है --

and here's a side note:

if you want a comic book to do well, make the librarians the hero. It always works well.

So the librarians find out

and they get together a special solution, a chemical solution called King's Water,

that when mixed with 99 stones

जिसे कि ९९ पत्थरों से मिलाने पर,

would be able to save all that culture and history in the books.

But the Mongols get there first.

मगर मंगोल वहाँ पहले पहुँच गये।

The books and the solution get thrown in the Tigris River.

और किताबें और वो रसायन भी टिग्रिस नदी में फ़ेंक दिया गया।

Some librarians escape, and over the course of days and weeks,

कुछ पुस्तकालय वाले बच निकले, और कई दिनों और हफ़्तों के बाद,

they dip the stones into the Tigris and suck up that collective wisdom

उन्होंने टिग्रिस नदी में वो पत्थर डाल कर, वो सारी जानकारी और अक्ल हासिल कर ली

that we all think is lost to civilization.

जिसे हम सब ने खोया हुआ मान लिया था।

Those stones have been smuggled as three prayer beads

उन पत्थरों को प्रार्थना की तीन मालाओ के दानों के रूप में छुपा कर

of 33 stones each

तीन माला - हर एक में ३३ दाने

through Arabia into Andalusia in Spain, where they're safe for 200 years.

अरब से अन्दूलेसिया से स्पेन तक तस्करी के ज़रिये लाया गया, और २०० साल तक छुपाया गया।

But in 1492, two important things happen.

मगर १४९२ में, दो महत्वपूर्ण घटनायें हुईं।

The first is the fall of Granada,

पहली तो ग्रानादा का ध्वस्त होना,

the last Muslim enclave in Europe.

जो कि यूरोप में मुस्लिमों का आखिरी ठिकाना था।

The second is Columbus finally gets funded to go to India, but he gets lost.

दूसरी ये कि कोलम्बस को भारत जाने के निकला, मगर खो गया।

(Laughter)

So 33 of the stones are smuggled

तो ३३ पत्थर तो तस्करी से

onto the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria

नीना, पिन्टा, और संता मारिया तक लाये गये,

and are spread in the New World.

और नयी दुनिया में फ़ैल गये।

Thirty-three go on the Silk Road to China, South Asia and Southeast Asia.

३३ सिल्क रूट के ज़रिये चीन, दक्षिण और दक्षिण-पूर्व एशिया में फ़ैल गये।

And 33 are spread between Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

और बाकी ३३ यूरोप और मध्य-पूर्व और अफ़्रीका में फ़ैल गये।

And now it's 2010, and there are 99 heroes

और अब २०१० है, और ९९ सुपरहीरो हैं

from 99 different countries.

जो कि ९९ अलग देशों से हैं।

Now it's very easy to assume

और ये सोचना बडा आसान है

that those books, because they were from a library called Bait al-Hikma, were Muslim books,

कि क्योंकि वो किताबें अल-हिक्मा पुस्तकालय से थी, तो इस्लामिक होंगी

but that's not the case because the caliph that built that library,

मगर ऐसा नहीं है क्योंकि जिस खलीफ़ा ने उसे बनवाया था,

his name was al-Ma'mun -- he was Harun al-Rashid's son.

उसका नाम था अल-मामून -- वो हारुन अल-रशीद का बेटा था।

He had told his advisers, "Get me all the scholars

उसने अपने सलाहकारों से कहा, ""मुझे वो सारे विद्वान चाहिये

to translate any book they can get their hands onto into Arabic,

जो सारी किताबों का अरबी में अनुवाद कर दें,

and I will pay them its weight in gold."

और मैं उन्हें उनकी किताबों के वज़न के बराबर सोना दूँगा।"

After a while, his advisers complained.

कुछ दिन बाद, सलाहकारों ने शिकायत की।

They said, "Your Highness, the scholars are cheating.

उन्होंने कहा, "महाराज, ये विद्वान धोखा कर रहे हैं

They're writing in big handwriting to take more gold."

वो बडे अक्षरों में लिख रहे हैं, ज्यादा सोने के लालच में।"

To which he said, "Let them be, because what they're giving us

तो खलीफ़ा बोला, "करने दो, क्योंकि वो हमें वो दे रहे हैं

is worth a lot more than what we're paying them."

जिसकी कीमत सोने से कहीं ज्यादा है।"

So the idea of an open architecture, an open knowledge,

तो खुले स्थापत्य का, खुली जानकारी का विचार

is not new to my neck of the desert.

रेगिस्तानी इलाकों में नया नहीं है।

The concept centers on something called the Noor stones.

ये परिकल्पना आधारित है नूर पत्थरों पर।

Noor is Arabic for light.

अरबी में नूर का अर्थ है रोशनी।

So these 99 stones, a few kind of rules in the game:

तो इन पत्थरों के, कुछ नियम वगैरह हैं:

Number one, you don't choose the stone; the stone chooses you.

पहला, आप पत्थर तक नहीं पहुँचते, वो आप तक पहुँच जाते हैं।

There's a King Arthur element to the storyline, okay.

कुछ कुछ किंग आर्थर की कहानी की तरह, ठीक है।

Number two, all of The 99,

दूसरा, सारे के सारे ९९ हीरो,

when they first get their stone, or their power, abuse it;

जब उनके पास पत्थर आता है, तो उसका गलत इस्तेमाल करते हैं;

they use it for self-interest.

अपनी खुदगर्ज़ी के लिये।

And there's a very strong message in there that when you start abusing your stone,

और उसमें एक शक्तिशाली संदेश निहित है कि जब आप पत्थर का गलत इस्तेमाल करते हैं

you get taken advantage of

आपका फ़ायदा उठाया जाता है

by people who will exploit your powers, okay.

उन लोगों के द्वारा जो आपकी शक्ति को गलत इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

Number three, the 99 stones all have within them

तीसरा कायदा, इन ९९ पत्थरों में सब कुछ है

a mechanism that self-updates.

एक ऐसा तरीका जिससे इन्हें ताज़ा जानकारी मिलती रहती है।

Now there are two groups that exist within the Muslim world.

अब इस्लाम में दो तरह के लोग हैं

Everybody believes the Koran is for all time and all place.

सब लोग मानते हैं कि कुरान शाश्वत सत्य है - समय और स्थल से परे।

Some believe that means that the original interpretation

कुछ लोग ये मानते हैं कि इसका मतलब वो कुरान है

from a couple thousand years ago is what's relevant today.

जिसे कई हज़ार साल पहले लिखा गया था।

I don't belong there.

मेरा इस पर विश्वास नहीं है।

Then there's a group that believes the Koran is a living, breathing document,

एक और दल है जो मानता है कि कुरान जीवित, साँस लेता दस्तावेज़ है।

and I captured that idea within these stones that self-update.

और इसी बात को मैने इन पत्थरों के खुद ताज़ा होने में शामिल किया।

Now the main bad guy, Rughal,

अब जो मुख्य खलनायक है, रुघल,

does not want these stones to update,

वो चाहता नहीं कि ये पत्थर ताज़ा जानकारी रखें।

so he's trying to get them to stop updating.

तो वो इन्हें नयी जानकारी तालीम लेने से रोकता है।

He can't use the stones, but he can stop them.

वो ख़ुद इन पत्थरों का इस्तेमाल तो नहीं कर सकता है, मगर वो इन्हें रोक सकता है।

And by stopping them, he has more of a fascist agenda,

और इन्हें रोक कर, वो अपना फ़ासिस्टनुमा अजेंडा चलाता है,

where he gets some of The 99 to work for him --

और कुछ एक ९९ सुपरहीरो लोगों से अपने लिये काम करवाता है।

they're all wearing cookie-cutter, same color uniforms

वो सब एक तरह की वर्दी में है, एक ही रंग की।

They're not allowed to individually express who they are and what they are.

उन्हें इज़ाजत नहीं है खुद को अभिव्यक्त करने की, वो कौन है, क्या हैं बताने की।

And he controls them from the top down --

और वो उन पर ख़ासा शासन करता है।

whereas when they work for the other side, eventually,

जबकि जब वो दूसरी तरफ़ से काम करते हैं,

when they find out this is the wrong person, they've been manipulated,

उन्हें पता लगता है कि वो गलत आदमी के लिये काम करते हैं, उन्हें इस्तेमाल किया गया है,

they actually, each one has a different, colorful

और वहाँ तो कोई वर्दी वगैरह भी नहीं है, सबके

kind of dress.

And the last point about the 99 Noor stones is this.

और आखिरी बात इन ९९ नूर पत्थरों के बारे में ये थी।

So The 99 work in teams of three.

तो ९९ हीरो तीन तीन की टीम में काम करते हैं।

Why three? A couple of reasons.

तीन ही क्यों? कुछ वजहे हैं।

Number one, we have a thing within Islam that you don't leave a boy and a girl alone together,

पहली ये कि इस्लाम में कभी भी आप एक लडके और एक लडकी को अकेला नहीं छोडते,

because the third person is temptation or the devil, right?

क्योंकि तीसरा व्यक्ति लालच या फ़िर शैतान होता है, है न?

I think that's there in all cultures, right?

ऐसा ही है न सारी अवधारणाओं में, है न?

But this is not about religion, it's not about proselytizing.

मगर ये धर्म के लिये नहीं है, ये तो पुराने मतों को तोडने जैसा है।

There's this very strong social message

यहाँ बहुत बडा सामाजिक संदेश है

that needs to get to kind of

जिसका पहुँचना ज़रूरी है

the deepest crevices of intolerance,

असहनीयता की गहराइयों तक.

and the only way to get there is to kind of play the game.

और इस का एक ही तरीका है कि कुछ खेल खेले जायें।

And so this is the way I dealt with it.

और मैने इसका ये तरीका निकाला।

They work in teams of three: two boys and a girl, two girls and a boy,

वो तीन लोगों की टीम में काम करेंगे, दो लडके और एक लडकी,

three boys, three girls, no problem.

तीन लडकी, तीन लडके, समस्या ही खत्म।

And the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, also spoke about

the importance of the number three in all cultures, so I figure I'm covered.

I got accused in a few blogs that I was actually sent by the Pope

So here's some of the characters that we have.

Mujiba, from Malaysia: her main power is she's able to answer any question.

She's the Trivial Pursuit queen, if you want,

but when she first gets her power,

she starts going on game shows and making money.

We have Jabbar from Saudi who starts breaking things when he has the power.

जब्बर है, साउदी अरब से, जिसने तोड फ़ोड शुरु कर दी थी ताकत मिलते ही।

Now, Mumita was a fun one to name. Mumita is the destroyer.

मुमिता भी मज़ेदार है। ये कुछ भी नष्ट कर सकती है।

So the 99 attributes of Allah have the yin and the yang;

तो अल्लाह के ९९ गुणों में भी यिन और यांग हैं।

there's the powerful, the hegemonous, the strong,

वहाँ शक्ति है, ताकत है, आधिपत्य है।

and there's also the kind, the generous.

मगर वहाँ उदारता है, और दया भी है।

I'm like, are all the girls going to be kind and merciful and the guys all strong?

मुझे लगा, कि क्या सारी लडकियाँ दयालु और उदार और सारे लडके ताकतवर होंगे?

I'm like, you know what, I've met a few girls who were destroyers in my lifetime, so ...

तो मैने सोचा, मैं कुछ एक विध्वंसक लडकियों से मिला तो हूँ अपने जीवन में...

We have Jami from Hungary, who first starts making weapons:

And this is one of my favorites, Al-Batina from Yemen.

Al-Batina is the hidden.

So Al-Batina is hidden, but she's a superhero.

I came home to my wife and I said, "I created a character after you."

मैनें घर लौट कर अपनी पत्नी से कहा, "मैने तुम्हारे आधार पर एक किरदार बनाया है।"

My wife is a Saudi from Yemeni roots.

मेरी पत्नी साउदी की है, और यमन से रिश्ता रखती है।

And she said, "Show me." So I showed this.

और उसने कहा, "दिखाओ मुझे।" तो मैने उसे ये दिखाया।

She said, "That's not me."

और उसने कहा, "ये तो मैं नहीं हूँ।"

I said, "Look at the eyes. They're your eyes."

So I promised my investors this would not be another made-in-fifth-world-country production.

This was going to be Superman, or it wasn't worth my time or their money.

So from day one, the people involved in the project,

Now I went to Dubai, to an Arab Thought Foundation Conference,

and I was waiting by the coffee for the right journalist.

और मैं कॉफ़ी पीते हुए किसी ठीक ठाक पत्रकार से टकराने का इंतज़ार कर रहा था।

Didn't have a product, but had energy.

मेरे पास दिखाने को अपने जुनून के अलावा कुछ था नहीं।

And I found somebody from The New York Times,

और मुझे न्यूयार्क टाइम्स से एक सज्जन मिले।

and I cornered him, and I pitched him.

And I think I scared him -- (Laughter)

because he basically promised me --

we had no product -- but he said, "We'll give you a paragraph in the arts section

So I said, "Great." So I called him up a few weeks afterward.

I said, "Hi, Hesa." And he said, "Hi." I said, "Happy New Year."

that just breaks you in so many ways.

I left Bellevue, went to business school and started this.

Now, one of the things that I refer to

when I -- about the importance of this message --

is that I gave a lecture at the medical school at Kuwait University,

And the first one was about a group called The Party of God,

Any boys and girls caught flirting

The second one was about a woman complaining

और दूसरा था एक औरत के बारे में जो शिकायत कर रही थी

because three minivans with six bearded men pulled up

क्योंकि तीन गाडियों से छः दढियल मर्द उतरे, उसे पकडा

and started interrogating her on the spot

और वहीं पर पूछताछ शुरु कर दी

for talking to a man who wasn't related to her.

ऐसे आदमी से बतियाने के लिये जो उसका रिश्तेदार न था।

And I asked the students in Kuwait where they thought these incidents took place.

मैने कुवैत में अपने विद्यार्थियों से पूछा कि उनके हिसाब से ये घटनायें कहाँ हुई होंगी।

The first one, they said Saudi Arabia. There was no debate.

पहला वाला, उन्होंने कहा, साउदी अरब - और वो बिलकुल निश्चित थे।

The second one, they were actually split

और दूसरे वाले में, अलग अलग विचार थे

between Saudi and Afghanistan.

कि साउदी या फ़िर अफ़्गानिस्तान।

What blew their mind was the first one took place in India,

जिस बात ने उनके होश उडा दिये वो ये थी कि पहला वाला भारत से था,

it was the party of a Hindu God.

और ये एक हिंदू भगवान की पार्टी थी।

The second one took place in upstate New York.

और दूसरा न्यूयार्क के ठीक बीच में हुआ था।

It was an Orthodox Jewish community.

एक रूढिवादी यहूदी समुदाय में।

But what breaks my heart and what's alarming

मगर जो बात मेरा दिल दुखाती है, और खतरनाक है

is that in those two interviews,

वो ये कि इन दो बातचीतों मे,

the people around, who were interviewed as well,

जो आसपास के लोग थे, जिनका साक्षात्कार भी लिया गया था,

refer to that behavior as Talibanization.

इस व्यवहार को तालिबानगिरी कहते हैं।

In other words, good Hindus and good Jews don't act this way.

दूसरे शब्दों में, अच्छे हिन्दू और अच्छी यहूदी ऐसा बर्ताव नहीं करते।

This is Islam's influence on Hinduism and Judaism.

ये हिन्दू धर्म पर और यहूदी धर्म पर इस्लाम का असर है।

But what do the students in Kuwait say? They said it's us --

मगर कुवैत के विद्यार्थियों ने क्या कहा? उन्होंने कहा - ये तो हम ही हैं।

and this is dangerous.

और ये खतरनाक है।

It's dangerous when a group self-identifies itself

ये खतरनाक है जब कोई समुदाय इस व्यवहार को

as extreme.

अपने व्यवहार सा पाने लगे।

This is one of my sons, Rayan,

ये मेरा बेटा है रायन,

who's a Scooby Doo addict.

और इसे स्कूबी डू की लत लग चुकी है।

You can tell by the glasses there.

इसके चश्मे से साफ़ ज़ाहिर है।

He actually called me a meddling kid the other day.

एक दिन इसने मुझे परेशान करने वाल बच्चा कहा।

But I borrow a lesson that I learned from him.

Last summer when we were in our home in New York,

he was out in the yard playing in his playhouse. And I was in my office working,

I said, "Go away. I'm working. I'm busy."

And what Rayan did then

is he sat there, he tapped his foot on the floor, at three and a half,

to protest something,

the hope is by linking enough positive things

to the Koran,

that one day we can move this child

from being proud in the way they're proud there,

to that.

As an undergrad at Tufts University, we were giving away free falafel one day

and, you know, it was Middle East Day or something.

We live in a world in which the most culturally innocuous symbols,

हम ऐसी दुनिया में रहते हैं जहाँ मासूम से मासूम सांस्कृतिक चिन्हों

like the falafel, can be misunderstood because of baggage,

जैसे कि फ़लाफ़ल, का गलत अर्थ लगाया जा सकता है संकीर्ण विचारधारा के चलते,

and where religion can be twisted

and purposefully made where it's not supposed to be by others.

In a world like that,

they'll always be a job for Superman and The 99.
