Many of us think of mathematics as addition, subtraction,

So my day-to-day definition of mathematics that I use every day

Mathematics enables us to do so many things.

I want you to think about how amazing representing something actually is.

How does this happen?

There's something amazing going on about representing stuff.

So I want to talk about that magic that happens

But today I want to go a little bit deeper,

There's one thing that's a little bit deeper,

This is a very nice pattern, and it's true,

Every time I do this, something else appears,

so I'm actually learning more about the object

I can use this as a tool for creating understanding.

Have a look at it if I spin it around like this.

Well, if you take two of these, join them together and spin it around,

I think this actually is the essence of understanding something.

So this thing about changing your perspective --

it's absolutely fundamental for humans.

Let's play around with the Earth.

Let's zoom into the ocean, have a look at the ocean.

We can do this with anything.

We can take the ocean and view it up close.

We can look at the waves.

We can go to the beach.

We can view the ocean from another perspective.

हम सागर को दूसरे नज़रिये से देख सकते हैं।

Every time we do this, we learn a little bit more about the ocean.

जितनी बार भी हम ये करते हैं, हम सागर के बारे में कुछ नया सीखते हैं।

If we go to the shore, we can kind of smell it, right?

अगर हम तट पर जायें तो जैसे हम उसे सूंघ सकते हैं, है ना?

We can hear the sound of the waves.

हम लहरों का शोर सुन सकते हैं।

We can feel salt on our tongues.

अपनी ज़ुबान पर नमक महसूस कर सकते हैं।

So all of these are different perspectives.

तो ये सब भिन्न दृष्टिकोण हैं।

And this is the best one.

और ये वाला सबसे अच्छा है।

We can go into the water.

हम पानी के अंदर जा सकते हैं।

We can see the water from the inside.

हम पानी को अन्दर से देख सकते हैं।

And you know what?

This is absolutely essential in mathematics and computer science.

ये गणित और कम्प्यूटर विज्ञान में निश्चित रूप से आवश्यक है।

If you're able to view a structure from the inside,

अगर आप किसी संरचना को अन्दर से देख सकते हैं,

then you really learn something about it.

That's somehow the essence of something.

So when we do this, and we've taken this journey

You can view yourselves from the outside.

That's really a strange thing.

You're using your imagination,

Mathematics and computer science are the most imaginative art forms ever.

And this thing about changing perspectives

और अपना दृष्टिकोण बदलने की ये बात,

should sound a little bit familiar to you,

आपको थोड़ी जानी-पहचानी लग रही होगी,

because we do it every day.

क्योंकि हम ये रोज़ करते हैं।

And then it's called empathy.

और हम इसको सहानुभूति कहते हैं।

When I view the world from your perspective,

जब मैं दुनिया को आपके नज़रिये से देखता हूँ,

I have empathy with you.

तो मुझे आपसे सहानुभूति होती है।

If I really, truly understand

अगर मैं सच में समझ पाता हूँ,

what the world looks like from your perspective,

I am empathetic.

That requires imagination.

इसके लिए कल्पना-शक्ति की ज़रूरत होती है।

And that is how we obtain understanding.

और ऐसे हम समझ को प्राप्त कर पाते हैं।

And this is all over mathematics and this is all over computer science,

ये पूरे गणित में हैं, यही पूरे कंप्यूटर विज्ञान में हैं,

and there's a really deep connection between empathy and these sciences.

और सहानुभूति और इन विज्ञान का बहुत गहरा सम्बन्ध है।

So my conclusion is the following:

understanding something really deeply

has to do with the ability to change your perspective.

You can study mathematics.

It's a wonderful way to train your brain.

Changing your perspective makes your mind more flexible.

It makes you open to new things,
