I was a blue-eyed, chubby-cheeked five-year-old

This was the focus of our whole lives.

I believed what I was taught with all my heart,

In 2009, that zeal brought me to Twitter.

Initially, the people I encountered on the platform

were just as hostile as I expected.

I'd been seeing at protests since I was a kid.

But in the midst of that digital brawl,

a strange pattern developed.

Someone would arrive at my profile with the usual rage and scorn,

and smiley faces.

They would be understandably confused and caught off guard,

And it was civil --

There was no confusion about our positions,

My friends on Twitter took the time to understand Westboro's doctrines,

Why did we advocate the death penalty for gays

The truth is that the care shown to me by these strangers on the internet

These shifts in my perspective

contributed to a larger erosion of trust in my church,

In spite of overwhelming grief and terror, I left Westboro in 2012.

In those days just after I left,

the instinct to hide was almost paralyzing.

All I could do was try to build a new life

invited us to spend time among a Jewish community in Los Angeles.

We slept on couches in the home of a Hasidic rabbi and his wife

It will not take us where we want to go.

What gives me hope is that we can do something about this.

We have to talk and listen to people we disagree with.

It's hard because we often can't fathom

There was nothing special about the way I responded to him.

What was special was their approach.

I thought about it a lot over the past few years

and I found four things they did differently

These four steps were small but powerful,

and I do everything I can to employ them in difficult conversations today.

The first is don't assume bad intent.

Assuming ill motives almost instantly cuts us off

Their questions gave me room to speak,

At Westboro, I learned not to care how my manner of speaking affected others.

but that strategy is ultimately counterproductive.

Dialing up the volume and the snark is natural in stressful situations,

but it tends to bring the conversation to an unsatisfactory, explosive end.

When my husband was still just an anonymous Twitter acquaintance,

our discussions frequently became hard and pointed,

People often lament that digital communication makes us less civil,

ولی یک مزیت بحث‌های اینترنتی نسبت به صحبت رو در رو هست.

We have a buffer of time and space

ما یک فاصله‌ی زمانی و مکانی

between us and the people whose ideas we find so frustrating.

بین خودمان و کسانی که ایده‌ها‌یشان برای ما غیر قایل تحمل است داریم.

We can use that buffer.

ما می‌توانیم از این فاصله سود ببریم.

Instead of lashing out, we can pause, breathe,

به جای حمله، می‌توانیم مکث کنیم، نفس عمیق بکشیم،

change the subject or walk away,

موضوع را عوض کنیم و یا دور شویم، و

and then come back to it when we're ready.

وقتی برگردیم که آمادگی دوباره داریم.

And finally ...

و در آخر...

make the argument.

استدلال کنیم.

This might seem obvious,

این به نظر واضح می‌رسد،

but one side effect of having strong beliefs

ولی یکی از معایب داشتن اعتقادات محکم

is that we sometimes assume

این است که ما گاهی فرض می‌کنیم

that the value of our position is or should be obvious and self-evident,

که درستی نظرات ما به قدری واضح و بدیهی است٬ یا باید باشد،

that we shouldn't have to defend our positions

که دلیلی ندارد از خودمان دفاع کنیم

because they're so clearly right and good

زیرا آن‌ها به وضوح درست و خوب هستند.

that if someone doesn't get it, it's their problem --

پس اگر کسی متوجه نمی‌شود، مشکل خودش است

that it's not my job to educate them.

و این وظیفه من نیست که بهشان آموزش دهم.

But if it were that simple,

ولی اگر به این سادگی بود،

we would all see things the same way.

همه ما مسائل را به یک چشم می‌دیدیم.

As kind as my friends on Twitter were,

اگر دوستان من در توییتر به این مهربانی نبودند

if they hadn't actually made their arguments,

و تلاشی برای استدلال در بحث‌ها نمی‌کردند،

it would've been so much harder for me to see the world in a different way.

برای من دیدن دنیا از زاویه دیگر بسیار سخت‌تر می‌شد.

We are all a product of our upbringing,

ما همه محصول تربیت خودمان هستیم،

and our beliefs reflect our experiences.

و اعتقادات ما تجربیاتمان را نشان می‌دهد.

We can't expect others to spontaneously change their own minds.

ما نمی‌توانیم انتظار داشته باشیم دیگران فوراً نظرشان را تغییر دهند.

If we want change,

اگر به دنبال تغییر هستیم،

we have to make the case for it.

باید به بحث از آن بپردازیم.

My friends on Twitter didn't abandon their beliefs or their principles --

دوستان من در توییتر عقاید و نظراتشان را ترک نکردند٬

only their scorn.

فقط مسخره کردن را کنار گذاشتند.

They channeled their infinitely justifiable offense

آن‌ها دفاعیات بی‌نهایت منطقی خود را جمع‌بندی کردند

and came to me with pointed questions tempered with kindness and humor.

و با سوالات تند آمیخته به طنز و دوستی به سراغ من آمدند.

They approached me as a human being,

با من مثل یک انسان برخورد کردند

and that was more transformative

و این بسیار اثربخش‌تر

than two full decades of outrage, disdain and violence.

از دو دهه کامل توهین٬ تحقیر و خشونت بود.

I know that some might not have the time or the energy or the patience

من می‌دانم بسیاری ممکن است وقت٬ انرژی و یا صبر

برای یک مواجهه‌ی طولانی را نداشته باشند

for extensive engagement,

but as difficult as it can be,

ولی با وجود اینکه سخت به نظر می‌رسد

reaching out to someone we disagree with

راه تماس برقرارکردن با کسی که نظرش با ما متفاوت است

is an option that is available to all of us.

همیشه برای همه‌ی ما وجود دارد.

And I sincerely believe that we can do hard things,

و من خالصانه معتقدم که ما می‌توانیم از پس کار‌‌های سخت برآییم٬

not just for them but for us and our future.

نه فقط برای آن‌ها بلکه برای خودمان در آینده.

Escalating disgust and intractable conflict

دامن زدن به انزجار و درگیری لجوجانه

are not what we want for ourselves,

چیزی نیست که ما برای خود بخواهیم

or our country

یا کشورمان

or our next generation.

یا نسل آینده‌مان.

My mom said something to me a few weeks before I left Westboro,

چند هفته قبل از اینکه من «وست‌برو» را ترک کنم، مادرم به من چیزی گفت.

when I was desperately hoping

وقتی من عاجزانه امیدوار بودم

there was a way I could stay with my family.

since even before I was that chubby-cheeked five-year-old,

standing on a picket line holding a sign I couldn't read.

در صف معترضان تابلویی در دست گیرم که نمی‌توانستم بخوانم.

She said, "You're just a human being,

مادرم گفت، "تو فقط یک انسانی

my dear, sweet child."

عزیزم، فرزند شیرینم."

She was asking me to be humble --

او از من می‌خواست افتاده باشم --

not to question but to trust God and my elders.

سوال نکنم بلکه به خداوند و بزرگتر‌ها اعتماد کنم.

But to me, she was missing the bigger picture --

ولی به نظر من او واقعیت بزرگتری را نمی‌دید --

that we're all just human beings.

اینکه ما همه فقط یک انسانیم.

That we should be guided by that most basic fact,

که همیشه باید با توجه به این حقیقت ساده حرکت کنیم

and approach one another with generosity and compassion.

و باید به یکدیگر با سخاوت و دلسوزی کمک کنیم.

Each one of us contributes to the communities

هر یک از ما به اجتماع خود

and the cultures and the societies that we make up.

به فرهنگ و جامعه‌ای که از آن ساخته شدیم خدمت می‌کنیم.

The end of this spiral of rage and blame begins with one person

انتهای این مارپیچ خشم و عتاب با کسی شروع می‌شود

who refuses to indulge these destructive, seductive impulses.

که جلوی این ضربات مخرب و اغواکننده را نمی‌گیرد.

We just have to decide that it's going to start with us.

ما فقط باید تصمیم بگیریم که این را از خودمان شروع کنیم.
