So often,

زۆربەی کات،

I'll take a fitness class,

دەچم بۆ وانەی لەش جوانی،

or I'll go to a music venue,

یاخود دەچم بۆ هۆڵی میوزیکی،

or, really, anywhere that plays music in the background,

یاخود بەڕاستی، هەر شوێنێک کە میوزیک لێ بدەن

and I'll find myself loving the rhythms

و خۆم لە قوڵایی ڕیتمەکاندا دەدۆزمەوە

and the melodies and the beats ...

و ئاواز و گۆرانیەکان...

And then I take a second to listen to the lyrics,

دواتر دەچمە سه‌ر گوێگرتن لە هۆنراوەی گۆرانیەکە

lyrics that, for example, place us in a position of subservience

ئەو هۆنراوانەی کە بۆ نموونە، دەمانخەنە دۆخی ملکەچ بوونەوە

that we would never tolerate in any other context.

کە لە هیچ دەقێکیتر پەسندی ناکەین.

And I'm aghast at the degree to which we normalize sexism in our culture.

من لەپلەیەک دەترسم کە لایه‌نگری ڕه‌گه‌زی ئاسایی بێتەوە لەنەریتمان.

I listen to this music and I'm like,

گوێ لەو میوزیکە دەگرم و وه‌كو ئه‌وه‌یه‌،

I don't want to have to turn up to the sound of my own oppression.

نامەوێت ناچار بم کە گوێ لە دەنگی چەوسانەوەم بگرم.

You know, music is one of the most powerful forms of communication,

دەزانن، میوزیک یەکێکە لە بەهێزترین شێوەکانی پەیوەندی کردن،

because it has the potential to either uplift or oppress.

چونکە توانای بەرزکردنەوەی مرۆڤ یاخود کپ کردنی هەیە.

Music caters to the emotions. Music caters to the soul.

میوزیک پێویستەکانی هەست پڕدەکاتەوە، و خۆراکی ڕۆحە.

Music opens up our soul.

میوزیک ڕۆحمان دەکاتەوە.

It opens up our channels to receive information

کەناڵەکەمان دەکاتەوە بۆ وەرگرتنی زانیاری

about somebody else's walk of life,

دەربارەی چارەنووسی ژیانی کەسێکیتر،

to inform our own roles.

بۆ ئەوەی ئاگادارمان بکاتەوە لە ڕۆڵەکانمان.

And while I have no problem with male fantasy,

و کێشەم نییە لەگەڵ خەیاڵی نێرینە،

what I do have a problem with

ئەوەی من کێشەم لەگەڵی هەیە

is that, according to a recent study, only 2.6 percent of all music producers

ئەوەیە، بەپێی لێکۆڵینەوە نوێکان سەدا 2.6 بەرهەمهێنەرانی مۆسیقا

identify as women.

ئافرەتن.

That means an even smaller percentage identify as trans or gender nonconforming.

ئەوەش واتە ڕێژەیەکی کەمتر گۆڕاوە یان ناگونجێت لە ڕووی ڕەگەزەوە

And why does this matter?

و بۆچی ئەوه‌ کێشەیه‌؟

Because, if we don't own and control our own narrative,

چونکە ئەگەر خۆمان نەبین و چیرۆکەکەمان کۆنتڕۆڵ نەکەین،

somebody else will tell our stories for us,

ئەوا کەسێکیتر چیرۆکەکەمان دەگێڕێتەوە،

and they will get it wrong,

و بە هەڵە لێی تێدەگەن.

perpetuating the very myths that hold us back.

و بێ بەش نابێت لەو شتە بێ مانایانەی کە بەربەستن بۆ پێشکەوتنمان.

And I'm not here to tell other people how to make their music.

و من لێرە نیم تا بە کەسانیتر بڵێم کە چۆن میوزیکەکانیان دروست بکەن.

But I am here to provide and design the alternative.

بەڵکو بۆ دابین کردن و دیزاینکردنی جێگرەوەیەک لێرەم.

One strategy I take in my music

ئەو به‌رنامه‌ڕێژیەی کە لە میوزیکەکەمدا دەیگرمە بەر

is making uplifting, energetic, percussive global beats

پێک دێت لە دروستکردنی ئاوازی جیهانی پڕ وزە کە تەپڵ لێدانی تێدایه‌

and placing lyrics on top of them

و دانانی هۆنراوە لە سەرووی هەمووانەوە

that genuinely describe my life's experiences

کە ئەزموونی ژیانم بەڕاستی باس دەکات

without contributing to the oppression of anybody else.

بەبێ ئەوەی کەسیتر ملکەچ بکات بۆ بەژداری پێکردن.

It's funny, because it's the same reason

ئەوە پێکەنیناویە، چونکە لەبەر هەمان هۆکارە

as to why we excuse so many problematic lyrics;

کە هۆنراوەیەکی زۆری بە کێشە پەسند دەکەین;

it's because we love how the beats make us feel.

چونکە ئێمە حەزبەوە دەکەین کە چۆن گۆرانیەکە هەستمان دەجوڵێنێت

An example of this is my song "Top Knot Turn Up."

نموونە بۆ ئەوە گۆرانیەکەمە "تۆپ نۆت تێرن ئەپ"

مۆسیقای "تۆپ نۆت تێرن ئەپ"

(Sings) I turned off my phone's notifications so I have more time /

(بە گۆرانیەوە) ئاگادارکەرەوەی موبایلم کوژاندۆتەوە بۆیە کاتی زیاترم هەیە/

No bubbles to trouble my clear state of mind /

هیچ بڵقێک نیە تا حاڵەتی مێشکە سافەکەم پێ ببڕێت /

One thing to know, I'm not here to please /

شتێک دەبێت بیزانی من لێرە نیم بۆ ڕازیکردنی کەس/

Hair tied up, I do it properly /

قژم بەباشی بەستراوە /

My time is not your property /

و کاتی من هی تۆ نییە /

When I'm productive like my ovaries, eyy! /

کاتێک بەبەرهەم دەبم وەک هێلکەدان /

Give a grown girl room to breathe, basic rights and her liberty /

مەودایەک بدە بە کچان بۆ هەناسەدان و مافی سەرەتای و ئازادی /

Free from insecurity that the world's projecting onto me /

سەربەستم لەو نا ئاسایشیەی کە جیهان لەسەرمی داناوە /

Please do not trouble me when I am focused /

تکایە بێزارم مەکەن کاتێک سەرنج دەدەم /

The future is female you already know this /

داهاتوو لەدەستی ئافرەتە هەمووتان ئەوە دەزانن /

I'm fighting against the corruption on SCOTUS /

من دژی گەندەڵی دادگای دەسەڵاتدار شەڕدەکەم /

Turned up in my top knot since when I first wrote this /

من بەپەرۆشم و قژم بەستووە لەوکاتەوەی بۆیەکەم جار ئەوەم نووسی /

I want us to keep making sex-positive, beautiful music

دەمەوێت بەردەوام بین لە دروستكردنی موزیکی ئەرێنی و جوان له‌سه‌ر ڕه‌گه‌ز

about joy and freedom.

دەربارەی خۆشی و ئازادی

I want us to embrace our own pleasure

دەمەوێت باوەش بە خۆشیەکانماندا بکەین

just as much as we embrace our own pain.

بەقەد ئەوەی باوەش بە ئازارەکانماندا دەکەین

I want us to celebrate the authentic,

دەمەوێت ئاهەنگی ڕاستی بگێڕین،

nuanced,

multidimensional aspects of our human existence,

rather than perform false narratives of degrading sexuality

in order to feel accepted or loved.

And another strategy that I take in my music

و به‌رنامه‌ڕێژیێکیتر کە لە میوزیکەکەمدا دەیگرمە بەر

to combat the misogyny that exists on the airwaves

بۆ بەرەنگاربوونەوەی ئەو ڕقەی بەرامبەر ئافرەتان بڵاوبۆتەوە

is to visually depict the very world I wished we lived in.

ئەوەیە بەبینراوی وەسفی ئەو جیهانە بکەین کە هیواخوازم تێیدا بژیم.

In the music video for my song "See Me Thru,"

لە میوزیک ڤیدیۆیی گۆرانیەکەم "سی می سرو"

which is like a vibe-y, queer electronic R and B song,

لە گۆرانی خۆشی و شادی دەچێت لە جۆری ئەی و بی ئەلکترۆنی،

I cast two of my dear friends, Ania and Dejha,

دوو هاوڕێی نزیکم بەژداری، پێکرد ئانیا و دیجا،

to play the role of the lovers, because they're married in real life.

کە ڕۆڵی خۆشەویست بگێڕن چونکە لە ژیانی ڕاستی هاوسەر بوون.

But what you don't know is that they also are behind the camera

بەڵام ئەوەی نایزانن ئەوەیە ئەوانیش لە پشت کامیران

concepting and directing the entire video.

بیرۆکە و دەرهێنان بۆ تەواوی ڤیدیۆکە دەکەن.

(ڤیدیۆ) هێێێێی ئۆۆۆ هەستەکانم هیلاک بوون

Music should be safe and accessible for all to experience.

دەبێت میوزیکەکە سەلامەت و شیاو بێت بۆ هەمووان.

As you can see, it's not about losing the sex appeal or swag

وەک دەبینن،ئەوە سەبارەت به‌ لەدەستدانی سەرنجڕاکێشی یان ڕەفتار نییە

that music has,

کە میوزیک هەیەتی،

it's about writing messages that infuse tenderness and positivity

ئەوە سەبارەت بە نوسینی نامەیە کە سۆز و ئەرێنی تێیدا چەسپاوە

into music that motivates us and challenges us.

لە مۆسیقادا هانمان ده‌دات و ڕکابەریمان دەکات.

And while we as musicians absolutely have the responsibility

و وەک مۆسیقاژەن بە تەواوەتی بەرپرسیاریەتی هەڵدەگرین

to make music that isn't disempowering,

تاوەکو وا لە میوزیک بکەین لاواز نەبێت

the consumers can be part of the change, too.

ڕەنگە بەکارهێنەرانیش بەشێک بن لە گۆڕان.

Firstly, we get to choose which songs we want to mute

سەرەتا، ئەوگۆرانیە هەڵدەبژێرین کەدەمانەوێ بێدەنگی بکەین

and which songs we want to turn louder.

وئەو گۆرانیەی دەمانەوێت دەنگی بەرزبکەین.

We get to say, "I respect myself enough to say I don't want to listen to this,

دەڵێین"بەپێی پێویست ڕێز لە خۆم دەگرم کە بڵێم نامەوێ گوێ لەوە بگرم،

and I don't want this to be in anybody else's space, either."

و نامەوێت هیچ کەسیتر ئەو بۆشایە بزانێت."

Secondly, we can simply ask ourselves:

دووەم، دەتوانین بە سادەی لە خۆمان بپرسین:

"Does this music or this message

"ئایا ئەو میوزیکە یان ئەو نامەیە

contribute to the oppression of somebody else?

هاوبەشی دەکات لە ملکەچ کردنی کەسێکیتر؟

Why am I tolerating it?"

بۆچی ئەوە پەسند دەکەم؟"

And finally, we can all be choosing to make playlists or DJ-ing music

لەکۆتایدا، هەمومان دەکرێت هەڵبژێردرێین بۆکردنی لیستی گۆرانی وتێکەڵکردنی گۆرانی

that provides the right vibe or mood that we're looking for in that moment

کەوا ئەوکەش و میزاجە گونجاوە بەردەستدەخات کە بەدوایدادەگەڕێین لەوساتەدا

without the problematic messaging.

بەبێ کێشەی نامە ناردن.

Why does this matter?

بۆچی ئەوە گرنگە؟

Because it's teaching algorithms in our streaming systems and our world

چونکە خواریزمیەکان فێر دەکات لە سیستمی پەخش و جیهانمان

exactly what it is that we do want to listen to,

لەسەر ئەوەی کە دەمانەوێت بە دیاریکراوی گوێی لێ بگرین،

creating long-term change and a feedbacking mechanism

دروستکردنی گۆڕانێکی ماوە درێژ و میکانیزمی کاردانەوە

that impacts the entire industry.

کە کاریگه‌ری دەبێت لەسەر تەواوی پیشەسازی.

This is not a message

ئەوە پەیامێک نییە

for just a small group of people.

تەنها بۆ کۆمەڵەیەکی بچووک لە خەڵک.

This is a message that affects everybody,

ئەوە پەیامێکە کە کاریگەری دەبێت لەسەر هەمووکەس

because when we protect and liberate our most vulnerable genders,

چونکە کاتێک ڕەگەزی بێ دەسەڵاتمان دەپارێزین و ئازادی دەکەین،

we liberate everybody.

ئێمە هەمووکەس ئازاد دەکەین.
