How I use art to tackle plastic pollution in our oceans | Alejandro Durán

This is Sian Ka'an.

ئەو سیان کانە.

Just south of Tulum on Mexico's Caribbean coast,

تەنها لە باشوری تولوم لە کەنداوی کاریبی لە مەکسیک،

it's a federally protected reserve,

لە لایەن بەشی دەزگایی پاراستنی

کەلەپوریەکانی جیهان (UNESCO) دەپارێزرێت

a UNESCO World Heritage Site

and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

But when I first visited in 2010,

I was horrified and completely confused

چونکە کەنارەکە بە بەتەواوەتی بە زبڵ وخاشاک داپۆشرابوو.

as to why the beach was covered in trash.

I soon realized that it was floating in from all over the world.

هەر زوو هەستم بەوەکرد کەوا لە هەموو شوێنێکی جیهان سەر ئاوکەوتوون.

I've since returned, after that first journey,

دوای گەشتی یەکەمم گەڕامەوە،

several times a year

چەند جارێک لە یەک ساڵدا

to visit Sian Ka'an, to the country of my birth,

بۆ سەردانی کردنی سیان کان و وڵاتی دایکم،

to work with this trash.

هەروەها بۆ کارکردن سەبارەت بەم خاشاکەش.

And so far,

و هەتا ئێستا،

we've documented garbage from 58 different countries and territories

ئەو زبڵ و خاشاکەمان لە ٥٨ وڵات و هەرێمی جیاواز و

on six continents,

شەش کیشوەر دیکۆمێنت کردووە،

all washing ashore in this paradise in Mexico.

و هەموو کەناره‌ ئاویە بە هەشتەکانی مەکسیک پاک دەکرێنەوە.

Although I can never know where a product was dropped,

هەرگیز نەم زانیوە لە کوێ ئەو بەرهەمانە دەکرێنە ئاوەکەوە،

I can, at times, based on the label, know where something was made.

هەندێک جار بە گوێرەی نوسراوەکەی سەر مادەکە دەزانم لە کوێ دروست کراون.

In red, you see all of the countries represented by their trash

سوورەکە، دەبینن، هەموو ئەو وڵاتانە پیشان دراون بە گوێرەی زبڵ و خاشاکەکەیان

in Sian Ka'an.

لە سیان کان.

Such as these Haitian butter containers in all shapes and sizes,

هەر وەکو ئەو دەفرە کەرەیەی هایتی بە هەموو شێوە و قەبارەیەکیانەوە،

Jamaican water bottles.

یان بوتڵی ئاوی جامایکی.

Not surprisingly, a lot of the stuff is from neighboring Caribbean countries,

سەیر نییە، زۆر بەی شتەکان لە وڵاتە دروسێکانی کاریبیەوە هاتوون،

but the stuff is from everywhere.

بەڵام زبڵ لە هەموو شوێنێکەوە هاتوون.

Here's a sampling of international water bottles.

ئەوەتا نموونەیەک لە بوتڵی ئاوی نێودەوڵەتی،

And one of the ironies is that a lot of what I'm finding

و یەکێک لە شتە سەیرەکان لەناو ئەو شتانە دۆزیومەتەوە

are products for cleaning and beautification,

کۆمەڵە بەرهەمێکن بۆ پاكکردنەوە و جوانکارین،

such as this item from the United States,

هەر وەکو ئەو مادەیە لە ئەمریکاوە هاتووە،

which is actually made to protect your plastic,

لە ڕاستیدا دروستکراوە بۆ ئەوەی لە مادەی پلاستیکی پتپارێزێت.

shampoo from South Korea,

شامبۆ هی وڵاتی کۆریای باشور،

bleach from Costa Rica

فاست هی وڵاتی کۆستەریکا

and a Norwegian toilet cleaner.

خاوێنکەرەوەی تەوالێتی نەرویجی.

And it's items that are all very familiar to us,

و ئەو مادانە کەوا هەموویان لەلای ئێمە زۆر ئاشنان،

or at least I hope you're familiar with these toothbrushes.

یان بەلایەنی کەمەوە هیوای ئەوه‌ دەخوازم بەو فڵچەی دادانانەش ئاشنابن.

Kitchen utensils.

قاپ و قاچاغی چێشتخانە.

Toys.

یاری منداڵان.

I'm also finding evidence of burning plastic trash,

هەروەها لەسەر سووتاندی زبڵی پلاستیکی بەڵگەم دۆزیەوە،

which releases cancer-causing fumes into the air.

دوکەڵی گاز لە هەودا بڵاو دەکاتەوە ئەوه‌ش دەبێتە هۆکارێک بۆ شێرپەنجە.

People ask what's the most interesting item that I've found,

پرسیار دەکرێ چ مادەیەک زۆر سەرنج ڕاکێشبووە کەوا دۆزیومەتەوە،

and that's by far this prosthetic leg.

و تاوەکو ئیستا ئەو لاقە ده‌ستكرده‌یە.

And in the background, if you can see that blue little bottle cap,

و لە شاشەکە، ئەگەر بتوانن بیبینن ئەو قەپاغە شینەی بوتڵ.

at the time that I found it,

لەو کاتەی دۆزیمەوە،

it was actually the home to this little hermit crab.

لە ڕاستیدا ماڵێک بوو بۆ ئەو قرژاڵە ڕەبەنە.

This guy is so cute.

ئەو پیاوە زۆر قشتە.

And it's these fascinating objects,

و ئەو شتانە سەرسورهێنەرن،

but also horrifying objects,

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا شتی تۆقێنەرن،

each with their own history,

هەریەکەیان خاوەنی مێژوی خۆیانن،

that I use to make my ephemeral, environmental artworks.

کەوا کاری هونەریم بەکاردەهێنم تا خۆم ئاوێتەی ژینگە کاتییەکان بکەم.

And it all started with this image in February of 2010,

و هەموو شتێک بەو وێنەیە لە شوباتی ٢٠١٠ دەستی پێکرد،

when I first visited Sian Ka'an.

کاتێک یەکەم جار سەردانی سیان کانم کرد.

I noticed that blue was the most prevalent color among the plastic.

تێبینی ئەوەم کرد کەوا ڕەنگی شین لە نێوان پلاستیکەکان زاڵترین ڕەنگە.

Purple is actually the most rare color. It's kind of like gold to me.

ئەرخەوانی لە ڕاستیدا دەگمەنترین ڕەنگە. لای من وەکو جۆرێکە لە زێڕ.

But blue is the most prevalent,

بەڵام شین زاڵترینە،

and so I gathered some of the blues

و بۆیە هەندێک لە شینەکانم کۆکردوە

and made this little arrangement in front of the blue sky

و ئەو ڕیزکردنە بچووکەم لە بەردەم ئاسمانی شین دروست کرد

and blue Caribbean waters.

و لەبەردەم ئاوی دەریای کاریبی.

And when I took a photograph and looked at the test shot,

و کاتێک وێنەیەکم کرد و سەیری وێنە گیراوەکەم کردوە،

it was like a lightning bolt hit me in that moment,

لەو ساتەیا وەک ئەوە بوو هەورە تریشقەیەک لێم بدات،

and I knew I was going to have to come back

و زانیم کەوا پێویستە بگەڕێمەوە

to create a whole series of installations on location

تا زنجیرەیەکی تەواوی دامەزراو دروست بکەم لە هەمان شوێن.

and photograph them.

و وێنەیان بگرم.

So this turned out to be a sketch

کەواتە ئەو نەخشەی شوێنە کە دەگۆڕێت

for a work that I completed three years later.

بۆ کارەکە کەوا سێ ساڵ دواتر تەواوم کرد.

I had no idea that almost 10 years later,

هیچ بیرۆکەیەکم نەبوو کەوا نزیکە ١٠ ساڵ دواتر،

almost a decade later, I'd still be working on it.

نزیکەی دەیەیەک هێشتا کاری لە سەر دەکەم.

But the problem persists.

بەڵام کێشەکە بەردەوام دەبێت.

So I'm going to show you some of the images

بۆیە بە نیازم هەندێک وێنەتان پیشاندەم

from the series that I called "Washed Up: Transforming a Trashed Landscape."

لەو زنجیرەیەی پێدەڵێن"شوشتن: گۆڕینی دیمەنێکی زبڵ و خاشاک."

Please keep in mind that I do not paint the garbage.

تکایە بیخەنە مێشکتانەوە کەوا من زبڵ و خاشک بۆیە ناکەم.

I'm collecting it and organizing it by color

کۆیان دەکەمەوە بە پێ ڕەنگەکەیان ڕێکیان دەخەم

on the same beaches where I find it.

هەر لە هەمان کەنار ئاو کە لێم دۆزیوەتەوە.

This is my precious trash pile as seen in 2015

ئەمه‌ بە نرخترین خاشاکی کۆکراوەمە کە لە ٢٠١٥ بینراوە.

after putting on a first edition of the "Museo de la Basura,"

دواتر یەکەم کاری هونەریمان لە "Museo de la Basura," دانا

or "Museum of Garbage."

مۆزەخانەی خاشاک.

It's fully my intention to care for this garbage,

ویستی منە کە گرنگی بەم خاشاکانە بدەم،

to exalt it,

لە بنایاتنات دایان بنێم

put it on a pedestal

و پیشانیان بدەم.

and to curate it.

و گرنگیان پێ بدەم.

We have all seen devastating images

هەموومان ئەو وێنە ڕوخێنەرانەمان بینیوە

of animals dying with plastic in their bellies.

کەوا ئاژەڵەکان بە هۆی پلاستیک لە سکیانە دەمرن.

And it's so important for us to really see those

و گرنگە بۆ ئێمە لە نزیکەوە ئەو شتانە ببینین

and to take those in.

و لە بیرمان بێت.

But it's by making aesthetic -- some might say beautiful -- arrangements

بەڵام بە درووست کردنی جوانی لەوانەیە هەندێک بڵێن ڕیزکرنێکی جوانی

out of the world's waste,

زبڵ و خاشاکە،

that I'm trying to hook the viewer

من دەمەوێت سەرنجی بینەر ڕابکێشم

to draw in those that might be numb to the horrors of the world

بۆ ئەو کەسانەی کە هەڵوەستیان لە ئاست هەڵەکانی جیهان نییە

and give them a different way to understand what's happening.

و وێنەیەکی ڕونیان سەبارەت بەو شتانەی ڕودەدەن پێ ببەخشم.

Some have described the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

هەندێک کەس ناوچەی خاشاکی زەریایی ئارام بە

دوورگەیەکی دوو هێندەی هەرێمی تێکساس دەشوبهێنن،

as an island twice the size of Texas,

but I've been told that it's hard to see

بەڵام من پێم وتراوە کە سەیر کردنی ئەستەمە

because it's more like a smog.

چونکە ئەمە وەک تەم وایە.

So through my artwork,

بۆیە لە ڕێگەی هونەرەکەمەوە،

I attempt to depict the reality of what's happening with our environment

ویستم ئەو کارەساتەی لە ژینگە ڕوودەدات وێنایی بکەم

and to make the invisible visible.

و نەبینراوەکان بخەمە بەر چاو.

My key question at first, after starting the project,

پرسیاری سەرەکیم، دوای دەست پێکردنی پرۆژەکەم،

was, "What do I do with the garbage when I'm done?"

بریتی بوو لە: چی لەو خاشاکانە بکەم دوای کارە هونەریەکەم؟

I was told by some that it could be damaged goods

هەندێک کەس پێیان وابوو کە دەبێتە کەلوپەلی لە کارکەوتوو

after traveling across the ocean and being exposed to the elements,

دوای گەشت کردن بۆ زەریاکان و بینینی ئەم شتانە،

that it could become degraded and potentially ruin a batch of recycling.

لەوانەیە بتوێنەوە و نەتوانرێت سه‌رله‌نوێ به‌كاربهێنرێته‌وه‌.

The landfill was not a happy resting place, either.

زبڵخانەکانیش شوێنێکی باش نەبوون بۆ ئەم خاشاکە.

And then finally, it dawned on me,

دواتر بیرۆکەیەکەم بۆ هات،

after all of the effort by me and all of the people who have helped me

دوای هەوڵی خۆم و ئەو کەسانەی هاوکارییان کردم

collect and organize and clean this trash,

لە کۆکردنەوە و پاکكردنەوەی ئەم خاشاکە،

that I should keep it.

درووستکراوەکان دەپارێزم.

And so that's the plan,

ئەمە پلانەکە بوو،

to use it and to reuse it endlessly

بێکۆتا بەکاریان دەهێنم و دواتر دیسان بەکاریان دەهێنمەوە

to make more artwork

و کاری هونەری زیاتر بەرهەم بهێنم

and to engage communities in environmental art-making.

و کۆمەڵگە بەشدار پێبکەم لە دروست کردنی کاری هونەری ژینگەیی.

This is an example of a community-based artwork that we did last year

ئەمە نموونەی کاری هونەرییە کە کۆمەڵگە کاریان لە سەر کردووە لە ساڵی پار

with the local youth of Punta Allen in Sian Ka'an.

لەگەڵ گەنجانی پونتا ئالین لە سیان کان.

A key part of the community work are the beach cleans

کاری سەرەکی کۆمەڵگەکان کەناراوێکی پاک بوو

and education programming.

لەگەڵ پرۆگرامی پەروەردەیی.

And as this community around the project grows

لەگەڵ گەشەسەندنی کۆمەڵگەی دەوری پرۆژە هونەرییەکە،

and as my trash collection grows,

لەگەڵ زیادبوونی ڕێژەی خاشاکە کۆکراوەکان،

I really believe that the impact will as well.

پێم وایە کاریگەری بەرچامان درووست کرد.

And so, over the years,

بۆیە، بە تێپەربوونی کات،

I've become a little obsessed with my trash collection.

خووم بە کۆکردنەوەی خاشک گرت،

I pack it into suitcases and travel with it.

لە جانتایی سەفەر دامدەنان و لە گەشتەکان لەگەڵم بوون

I take it on vacation with me.

و دەمبردنە پشووەکانم.

And in the latest work,

لە کۆتا ئیشدا،

I've begun to break the two-dimensional plane of the photograph.

وێنە چرکاندنی دوو ڕەهەندیم بە لاوەنا،

I'm really excited about this new work.

زۆر دڵخۆشم بەم کارە.

I see these as living artworks

من وەک کارێکی هونەری زیندوو چاویان لێ دەکەم

that will morph and grow over time.

کە بە تێپەڕبوونی کات گەشە دەکەن و دەگۆڕێن.

Although my greatest wish is that I run out of the raw material

لەگەڵ ئەوەی کە گەورەترین ئاواتم نەمانی خاشاکە

for this work,

بۆ کارە هونەریەکانم،

we're not there yet.

بەڵام ئەمە نزیک نییە.

So in the next phase of the project,

لە قۆناغی داهاتووی پڕۆژەکەدا،

I plan on continuing the community work

پلانم هەیە کە بەردەوامی بە بەشداری کۆمەڵگەکان بدەم

and making my own work at a much larger scale,

و پڕۆژەکە فراوانتر بکەم،

because the problem is massive.

چونکە کێشەکە زۆر گەورەیە.

Eight million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every year,

هەشت ملیۆن تەن پلاستیک ساڵانە فڕێ دەدەرێنە زەریاکانە،

destroying ecosystems.

Right now, as I speak, there's literally an oil spill of plastic happening.

I see this project as a plea for help and a call to action.

من ئەم پڕۆژەیە وەک داواکاری بۆ یارمەتی دەبینم،

تەندروستی و داهاتوومان بە شێوەیەکی لێکجیانەکراوە بە زەریاکان

Our health and future is inextricably linked

to that of our oceans.

بەستراونەتەوە.

I call the project "Washed Up: Transforming a Trashed Landscape,"

ناوی ئەم پرۆژەیه‌م ناوە: "بە شۆردن و گۆڕانی دیمەنی خاشاک."

but it's actually transformed me

چونکە بە ڕاستی منی گۆڕی

and made me rethink my own behaviors and consumption.

وای کرد کە دووبارە بە ڕەفتار و سروشتی خۆمدا بچمەوە.

And if it can help anybody else gain more awareness,

هیوادارم هەمان سود بە خەڵکیتریش بگەیەنێت.

then it will have been worthwhile.

ئەو کات ڕەنج بەخەسار دەرناچین.
