How I use art to tackle plastic pollution in our oceans | Alejandro Durán

This is Sian Ka'an.

이곳은 시안카안입니다.

Just south of Tulum on Mexico's Caribbean coast,

멕시코 카리브해 연안의 툴룸 바로 남쪽에 있습니다.

it's a federally protected reserve,

멕시코에서 관리하는 보호 구역이자

a UNESCO World Heritage Site

유네스코 세계 문화유산 보호지역으로

and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

지구에서 가장 다양한 생물이 사는 곳입니다.

But when I first visited in 2010,

2010년 이곳을 처음 방문했을 때

I was horrified and completely confused

쓰레기로 뒤덮여 있는 해변을 보고

as to why the beach was covered in trash.

전 정말 큰 충격을 받았습니다.

I soon realized that it was floating in from all over the world.

세계 곳곳의 쓰레기가 바다를 통해 흘러들어 온 거였죠.

I've since returned, after that first journey,

첫 여행에서 돌아온 후

several times a year

일 년에 몇 번은

to visit Sian Ka'an, to the country of my birth,

제 고국인 멕시코, 시안카안에 다시 가서

to work with this trash.

그곳의 쓰레기를 모았습니다.

And so far,

그리고 지금까지

we've documented garbage from 58 different countries and territories

6개 대륙의 58개국에서 나온 쓰레기를 기록했습니다.

on six continents,

all washing ashore in this paradise in Mexico.

전부 지상낙원이라 불리는 시안카안으로 떠밀려 온 거죠.

Although I can never know where a product was dropped,

그 물건들이 어디에서 버려졌는지 알 수는 없지만

I can, at times, based on the label, know where something was made.

상표를 보면 어디에서 만든 건지는 알 수 있습니다.

In red, you see all of the countries represented by their trash

빨간 표시를 보시면

시안카안에 흘러들어 온 쓰레기의 제조국을 알 수 있습니다.

in Sian Ka'an.

Such as these Haitian butter containers in all shapes and sizes,

아이티산 버터 용기로 모양과 크기가 다양하죠.

Jamaican water bottles.

자메이카산 물병이고요.

Not surprisingly, a lot of the stuff is from neighboring Caribbean countries,

물론 인근 카리브해 연안국의 물건들이 많긴 하지만

but the stuff is from everywhere.

그게 다가 아닙니다.

Here's a sampling of international water bottles.

이건 세계 각지의 물병을 골라 놓은 겁니다.

And one of the ironies is that a lot of what I'm finding

are products for cleaning and beautification,

such as this item from the United States,

which is actually made to protect your plastic,

shampoo from South Korea,

한국산 샴푸,

bleach from Costa Rica

and a Norwegian toilet cleaner.

노르웨이산 변기 세정제입니다.

And it's items that are all very familiar to us,

모두 우리에게 낯설지 않은 제품들이죠.

or at least I hope you're familiar with these toothbrushes.

아니면 적어도 칫솔은 많이 사용하시겠죠.

Kitchen utensils.

부엌 용품과

Toys.

장난감도 있고요.

I'm also finding evidence of burning plastic trash,

불에 탄 흔적이 있는 플라스틱도 있었습니다.

which releases cancer-causing fumes into the air.

타면서 공기 중에 발암물질을 내뿜게 되죠.

People ask what's the most interesting item that I've found,

어떤 물건이 가장 기억에 남는지 많이 물어보시는데

and that's by far this prosthetic leg.

그건 단연코 의족입니다.

And in the background, if you can see that blue little bottle cap,

저 뒤에 작고 파란 병뚜껑이 보이시죠?

at the time that I found it,

저걸 찾았을 때

it was actually the home to this little hermit crab.

이 작은 소라게가 집으로 쓰고 있었어요.

This guy is so cute.

정말 귀엽네요.

And it's these fascinating objects,

아주 흥미롭고

but also horrifying objects,

꽤 충격적이기도 하면서

each with their own history,

각각의 역사를 갖고 있는 이 물건들을

that I use to make my ephemeral, environmental artworks.

환경예술작품을 만드는데 사용했습니다.

And it all started with this image in February of 2010,

이 모든 일의 시작은 2010년 2월로

when I first visited Sian Ka'an.

시안카안에 처음 갔을 때였죠.

I noticed that blue was the most prevalent color among the plastic.

플라스틱 중에서 가장 많은 건 파란색이었습니다.

Purple is actually the most rare color. It's kind of like gold to me.

보라색이 가장 드물었고요. 꼭 금을 찾는 것 같았죠.

파란색이 가장 흔했는데요,

But blue is the most prevalent,

and so I gathered some of the blues

파란색 물건들을 모아서

and made this little arrangement in front of the blue sky

푸른 하늘과 카리브해와 어우리지게 정렬하였습니다.

and blue Caribbean waters.

And when I took a photograph and looked at the test shot,

사진을 찍고 확인하다가

it was like a lightning bolt hit me in that moment,

순간 번뜩이는 생각이 떠올랐습니다.

and I knew I was going to have to come back

꼭 다시 돌아와서

to create a whole series of installations on location

이곳을 시리즈로 여러 작품을 만들고

and photograph them.

사진으로 남겨야겠다고요.

So this turned out to be a sketch

그래서 이 작품을 시작으로

for a work that I completed three years later.

3년 후에는 모든 작품을 완성했습니다.

I had no idea that almost 10 years later,

그런데 거의 10년이 지난 지금까지도

almost a decade later, I'd still be working on it.

작품 활동을 하고 있다는 게 놀라울 따름이죠.

But the problem persists.

환경 문제가 지속되고 있으니까요.

So I'm going to show you some of the images

from the series that I called "Washed Up: Transforming a Trashed Landscape."

"쓸려온 것들: 쓰레기로 덮인 풍경의 변화"라는 작품입니다.

Please keep in mind that I do not paint the garbage.

물건에 색을 칠한 건 절대 아니고요.

I'm collecting it and organizing it by color

쓰레기를 모은 후 색깔별로 나눠서

on the same beaches where I find it.

처음 있던 자리에 늘어놓았습니다.

This is my precious trash pile as seen in 2015

이건 소중한 쓰레기 더미인데요,

2015년 "무세오 데 라 바수라" 시리즈의 첫 회에 사용되었습니다.

after putting on a first edition of the "Museo de la Basura,"

or "Museum of Garbage."

"쓰레기 박물관"이라는 뜻입니다.

It's fully my intention to care for this garbage,

제 의도는 쓰레기를 조심히 다루고

to exalt it,

그 가치를 높여

put it on a pedestal

존중하여

and to curate it.

We have all seen devastating images

버려진 플라스틱을 삼키고 죽어가는 동물들의

of animals dying with plastic in their bellies.

끔찍한 영상을 모두 보셨을 겁니다.

And it's so important for us to really see those

제대로 직시하고 받아들이는 것은 매우 중요한 과제입니다.

and to take those in.

But it's by making aesthetic -- some might say beautiful -- arrangements

누군가는 아름답다고 말할 정도로

쓰레기를 미학적으로 보기 좋은 작품으로 승화시켜

out of the world's waste,

that I'm trying to hook the viewer

사람들의 시선을 사로잡고자 합니다.

to draw in those that might be numb to the horrors of the world

지구가 앓고 있는 무시무시한 문제에 무딘 사람들의 관심을 유도하여

and give them a different way to understand what's happening.

그들이 현 상황을 제대로 직시할 새로운 방법을 제시하는 것이죠.

Some have described the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

태평양 거대 쓰레기 지대는

as an island twice the size of Texas,

텍사스 두 배 크기의 섬이라고 하죠.

but I've been told that it's hard to see

하지만 그건 마치 스모그 같아서

because it's more like a smog.

잘 보이지 않습니다.

So through my artwork,

그래서 전 작품을 통해

I attempt to depict the reality of what's happening with our environment

환경이 어떻게 파괴되고 있는지 그 실상을 표현해서

and to make the invisible visible.

보이지 않는 것을 볼 수 있도록 할 것입니다.

My key question at first, after starting the project,

프로젝트를 시작하고 나서 제일 처음 생긴 고민은

was, "What do I do with the garbage when I'm done?"

"작품을 끝낸 쓰레기를 어떻게 하지?"였습니다.

I was told by some that it could be damaged goods

여기저기 바다를 떠다니며

after traveling across the ocean and being exposed to the elements,

비바람에 노출되어 훼손된 물건이니

that it could become degraded and potentially ruin a batch of recycling.

가치가 떨어져 어쩌면 재활용도 못할거란 말을 들었죠.

The landfill was not a happy resting place, either.

쓰레기 매립지도 좋은 선택은 아니었고요.

And then finally, it dawned on me,

그러다 깨닫게 되었습니다.

after all of the effort by me and all of the people who have helped me

쓰레기를 열심히 모으고 분류하고 닦으면서

collect and organize and clean this trash,

같이 작업했던 사람들의 노력이 들어간 것이니

that I should keep it.

보관하는 게 좋겠다고요.

And so that's the plan,

그래서 제가 세운 계획은

to use it and to reuse it endlessly

쓰레기를 사용하고 또 다시 사용하면서

to make more artwork

계속 작품을 만들고

and to engage communities in environmental art-making.

환경예술작품 활동에 지역 사회를 참여시키는 것입니다.

This is an example of a community-based artwork that we did last year

작년에 지역사회를 기반으로 구성원들과 함께 만든 작품으로

with the local youth of Punta Allen in Sian Ka'an.

시안카안의 푼타 알렌의 청소년들과 함께 했습니다.

A key part of the community work are the beach cleans

이 작업에서 가장 중요한 부분은

해변 청결과 교육 효과입니다.

and education programming.

And as this community around the project grows

지역 사람들과 프로젝트를 함께 하면서

and as my trash collection grows,

쓰레기를 더 많이 모을수록

I really believe that the impact will as well.

And so, over the years,

I've become a little obsessed with my trash collection.

전 쓰레기 수집에 빠져 살았습니다.

I pack it into suitcases and travel with it.

여행 가방에 쓰레기를 넣은 채로 여행을 다녔고

I take it on vacation with me.

휴가도 같이 보냈습니다.

And in the latest work,

그리고 최근에는

I've begun to break the two-dimensional plane of the photograph.

평평한 2차원 사진에서 벗어난 작품을 만들기 시작했어요.

I'm really excited about this new work.

새로운 작품에 무척 설렙니다.

I see these as living artworks

형태를 바꾸면서 계속 자라나는

that will morph and grow over time.

살아있는 작품인 거죠.

Although my greatest wish is that I run out of the raw material

저의 가장 큰 바람은

작품에 쓸 재료가 바닥나는 날이 오는건데요,

for this work,

we're not there yet.

아직은 갈 길이 멉니다.

So in the next phase of the project,

프로젝트의 다음 단계는

I plan on continuing the community work

지역 사회와 같이 계속 작품을 만들면서

and making my own work at a much larger scale,

더 큰 규모로 저 만의 작품도 만드는 것입니다.

because the problem is massive.

환경 문제가 심각하니까요.

Eight million tons of plastic waste enter our oceans every year,

매년 8백만 톤의 플라스틱 쓰레기가 바다로 흘러들어가

destroying ecosystems.

생태계를 파괴하고 있습니다.

Right now, as I speak, there's literally an oil spill of plastic happening.

이 순간에도 플라스틱의 기름 유출이 일어나고 있죠.

I see this project as a plea for help and a call to action.

이 프로젝트는

환경을 보호하고 조치를 취할 것을 요청합니다.

Our health and future is inextricably linked

인류의 건강과 미래는 바다의 건강한 미래와

to that of our oceans.

불가분한 관계입니다.

I call the project "Washed Up: Transforming a Trashed Landscape,"

프로젝트 제목을 "쓸려온 것들 : 쓰레기로 덮인 풍경의 변화"로 지었지만

but it's actually transformed me

사실 변화한 건 제 자신입니다.

and made me rethink my own behaviors and consumption.

제 행동과 소비습관을 다시 돌아보게 되었죠.

And if it can help anybody else gain more awareness,

이 프로젝트로 환경 문제에 대한 인식을 높일 수 있다면

then it will have been worthwhile.

그것으로 보람있는 일일 것입니다.
