It was April 8, 2003.

I was in Baghdad, covering the war in Iraq.

That day, Americans tanks started arriving in Baghdad.

We were just a few journalists in the Palestine Hotel,

وكما يحصل في الحرب،

and, as happens in war,

the fighting began to approach outside our windows.

Baghdad was covered in black smoke and oil.

كانت بغداد مغطاة بالدخان الأسود والنفط. كانت الرائحة كريهة،

It smelled awful.

We couldn't see a thing, but we knew what was happening.

Of course, I was supposed to be writing an article,

but that's how it always goes --

you're supposed to be writing and something big happens.

So I was in my room on the 16th floor,

writing and looking out the window every now and then

to see what was happening.

Suddenly, there was a huge explosion.

During the previous three weeks,

there had been shelling with half-ton missiles,

but this time, the shock --

I felt it inside of me,

and I thought, "It's very close.

So I went down to see what was happening.

I went down to the 15th floor

And I saw people, journalists, screaming in the hallways.

I walked into a room

and realized that it had been hit by a missile.

وأيقنت أنها قد أصيبت بقذيفة.

وهناك شخص مصاب.

Someone had been wounded.

كان هناك شخص بالقرب من النافذة،

There was a man near the window,

a cameraman named Taras Protsyuk,

lying face-down.

Having worked in a hospital before, I wanted to help out.

So I turned him over.

And when I turned him over,

I noticed that he was open from sternum to pubis,

but I couldn't see anything, nothing at all.

لكن لم ارى اي شيء، لا شيء على الاطلاق.

كل ما رأيته بقعة بيضاء، لامعة أعمتني.

All I saw was a white, pearly, shiny spot that blinded me,

and I didn't understand what was going on.

ولم أفهم أي شيء.

Once the spot disappeared and I could see his wound,

فجأة اختفت البقعة واستطعت ان ارى جرحه،

which was very serious,

my buddies and I put a sheet underneath him,

وضعناه انا ورفاقي داخل غطاء،

and we carried him onto an elevator that stopped at each of the 15 floors.

وحملناه في مصعد كان يتوقف في كل طابق لـ 15 طابقا.

We put him in a car that took him to the hospital.

وضعناه في سيارة أخذته الى المستشفى.

He died on the way to the hospital.

مات في طريقه الى المستشفى. و المصور الإسباني "جوسي كوسو"،

The Spanish cameraman José Couso, who was on the 14th floor and also hit --

الذي كان في الطابق 14 مصاباً أيضاً

because the shell had exploded between the two floors --

died on the operating table.

As soon as the car left, I went back.

بعد رحيل السيارة، كان يجب ان أكتب مقالة،

There was that article I was supposed to write --

which I had to write.

إذن، قدّمت نفسي..

And so --

I returned to the hotel lobby with my arms covered in blood,

ذهبت إلى رواق الفندق، والدماء تغطي ذراعي،

when one of the hotel gofers stopped me

أوقفني هناك عامل عراقي

and asked me to pay the tax I hadn't paid for 10 days.

طلب مني دفع ضرائب تأخير عشرة أيام

تخلّصت منه، وقلت في نفسي:

I told him to get lost.

And I said to myself: "Clear your head, put it all aside.

"دع هذا جانباً بالخصوص. دع هذا جانباً!

إذا أردت أن تكتب، يجب وضع هذا جانباً."

If you want to write, you need to put it all aside."

And that's what I did.

هذا ما فعلته، صعدت وكتبت مقالتي،

I went upstairs, wrote my article and sent it off.

وأرسلتها، لاحقاً،

بعيداً عن التأثّر، عن خسارة زملائي،

Later, aside from the feeling of having lost my colleagues,

something else was bothering me.

كان شيء ما يزعجني:

I kept seeing that shiny, pearly spot,

رأيت من جديد تلك البقعة البيضاء اللامعة،

ولم أفهم معناها.

and I couldn't understand what it meant.

And then, the war was over.

وهنا، بعد مرور الحرب...

Later, I thought: "That's not possible. I can't just not know what happened."

قلت في نفسي، إنه غير ممكن.

لا يمكن أن لا أعرف ما حدث.

Because it wasn't the first time, and it didn't only happen to me.

لأنها لم تكن المرة الأولى،

I have seen things like that happen to others

in my 20 to 35 years of reporting.

I have seen things that had an effect on me too.

رأيت أشياء أثّرت فيّ أيضاً، ولكن مثلاً،

For example, there was this man I knew in Lebanon,

في لُبنان، عرفت رجلاً،

a 25-year-old veteran who had been fighting for five years --

كان عمره 25 سنة، 5 سنوات من الحرب

كان محارباً قديماً نتتبعه في كل مكان!

a real veteran -- who we would follow everywhere.

كان يزحف ليلاً، بكلّ امان،

He would crawl in the dark with confidence --

he was a great soldier, a true soldier --

كان عسكرياً، جندياً حقيقياً! وكنا نتبعه

so we would follow him, knowing that we would be safe with him.

لأننا كنا نعرف أننا في أمان معه.

يوماً قالوا لي، وتأكدت من ذلك،

And one day, as I was told --

and I've seen him again since --

he was back in the camp, playing cards,

أنه كان يلعب الورق في الثكنة،

when someone came in next door,

وأن شخصاً دخل وأفرغ سلاحه،

and discharged their weapon.

As the gun went off,

وأن إطلاق النار وحده ألقاه تحت الطاولة كطفل!

that blast, that one shot, made him duck quickly under the table,

like a child.

ارتجف، وذُعر! ومنذ ذلك الحين،

He was shaking, panicking.

And since then, he has never been able to get up and fight.

لم يستطع الوقوف والقتال.

He ended up working as a croupier

وانتهى، وجدته يعمل في كازينو بيروت

in a Beirut casino where I later found him,

لأنه لم يعد يستطيع النوم أبداً،

because he couldn't sleep, so it was quite a suitable job.

وبالتالي ناسبه العمل.

So I thought to myself,

قلت في نفسي، ما هذا الشيء الذي بإمكانه

"What is this thing that can kill you

without leaving any visible scars?

أن يقتلك بلا جروح ظاهرة؟ ماذا يحدث؟

How does that happen?

ما هذا الشيء المجهول؟

What is this unknown thing?"

كان يحدث كثيراً لدرجة أنه أكثر من مجرد صدفة.

It was too common to be coincidental.

So I started to investigate --

إذن، بدأت البحث، هذا كل ما أجيده.

that's all I know how to do.

I started to investigate

بدأت البحث في الكتب، لدى الأطباء النفسيين، المتاحف، المكتبات...إلخ.

by looking through books,

reaching out to psychiatrists,

going to museums, libraries, etc.

Finally, I discovered that some people knew about this --

وهنا اكتشفت أن هناك أشخاصاً يعرفون،

often military psychiatrists --

معظمهم أطباء نفسيون عسكريون، وأننا كنا في مواجهة شيء

and that what we were dealing with was called trauma.

يسمونه "صدمة"، ويسميه الأمريكون PTDS، صدمة، اضطراب ما بعد الصدمة،

Americans call it PTSD or traumatic neurosis.

It was something

أنه كان شيئاً موجوداً، لا يتحدث عنه أحد.

that existed,

but that we never spoke about.

So, this trauma --

ولكن ما هذه الصدمة؟

what is it?

Well, it's an encounter with death.

إنها لقاء مع الموت.

لا أعرف هل رأيتم الموت أمامكم، لا أتحدث عن الجثث،

I don't know if you've ever had an experience with death --

I'm not talking about dead bodies,

لا أتحدث عن جثة الجدّ فوق سرير المستشفى، لا!

or someone's grandfather lying in a hospital bed,

ولا عن شخص انقلب على الطريق.

or someone who got hit by a car.

أتحدث عن اللقاء مع العدم والموت.

I'm talking about facing the void of death.

And that is something no one is supposed to see.

وهذا لا نملك الحق في رؤيته.

People used to say,

قال القدامى: لا يمكن رؤية الشمس والموت وجهاً لوجه.

"Neither the sun, nor death can be looked at with a steady eye."

A human being should not have to face the void of death.

لا يملك الإنسان الحق في رؤية فراغ الموت أمامه.

وحين يحدث هذا، يظل غير مرئي لبعض الوقت،

But when that happens,

it can remain invisible for a while --

days, weeks, months, sometimes years.

أياماً، أسابيع، أشهر، أحياناً أعواماً .

And then, at some point,

ثم فجأة ينفجر ذلك، لأنه شيء يدخل الدماغ.

it explodes,

because it's something that has entered your brain --

a sort of window between an image and your mind --

يشبه النافذة، بين صورة ودماغنا، ثم يلوذ بداخله،

that has penetrated your brain,

staying there and taking up all the space inside.

يبقى هناك ويحتل كلّ مساحة الدماغ.

And there are people -- men, women,

وهنا ترون أشخاصاً، رجالاً، نساءً،

who suddenly no longer sleep.

فجأة، لا ينامون على الإطلاق،

تنتابهم أزمات قلق ورعب مروعة!

And they experience horrible anxiety attacks --

panic attacks, not just minor fears.

إنه الرعب! وليست مخاوف صغيرة.

They suddenly don't want to sleep,

يرفضون النوم نهائياً،

because when they do, they have the same nightmare every night.

لأنهم حين ينامون،

يعيشون كلّ ليلة نفس الكابوس،

They see the same image every night.

كلّ ليلة نفس الصورة. ما هي الصورة؟

What type of image?

إنها تشبه صورة مقاتل يدخل عمارة،

For example, a soldier who enters a building

and comes face to face with another soldier aiming at him.

ويجد نفسه في مواجهة مقاتل آخر يصوّب نحوه،

He looks at the gun, straight down the barrel.

يرى رأس البندقية، الذي يصبح فجأة عملاقاً

And this barrel suddenly becomes enormous, deformed.

ومشوهاً، صوفياً، ويبتلع كلّ شيء. وهنا يقول...

It becomes fluffy, swallowing everything.

And he says --

later he will say, "I saw death.

بعد ذلك يقول:"لقد رأيت الموت، رأيتني ميتاً، أنا ميت"

I saw myself dead, therefore I'm dead."

ومن هذه اللحظة، يدرك أنه ميت.

And from then on, he knows he is dead.

إنه ليس تصوّراً، يقتنع بأنه ميت فعلاً.

It is not a perception -- he is convinced that he is dead.

وهذه البندقية، في تلك اللحظة، يصل شخص ما،

In reality, someone came in, the guy left or didn't shoot, whatever,

ويذهب الآخر، لا يطلق النار، لا يهمّ،

and he didn't actually get shot --

هو ميت في هذه اللحظة.

but to him, he died in that moment.

يمكن أن تكون أيضاً رائحة مقبرة.

Or it can be the smell of a mass grave --

رأيت الكثير منهم في رواندا.

I saw a lot of that in Rwanda.

يمكن أن يكون صوت صديق يُنادي،

It can be the voice of a friend calling,

تحت تأثير الجروح ولا نستطيع فعل شيء لأجله.

and they're being slaughtered and there's nothing you can do.

You hear that voice,

نسمع ذلك الصوت، كلّ ليلة، طيلة أسابيع،

and you wake up every night -- for weeks, months --

أشهر، ثم يستيقظ الرجل.

in a trance-like state, anxious and terrified,

مٌغمى عليه، خائفاً، مُرهباً، كطفل.

like a child.

I have seen men cry --

رأيت رجالاً يبكون، لكن كالطفل،

just like children --

وهم يرون نفس الصورة. إذن بداخل الدماغ،

from seeing the same image.

So having that image of horror in your brain,

صورة الرعب، صورة العدم والموت،

seeing the void of death --

التي تسمى (الآخر الذي يشبهك)،

that analogue of horror which is hiding something --

أي صورة تُخفي شيئاً،

will completely take over.

تحتل كلّ شيء.

You cannot do anything, anything at all.

لا يمكن أن يفعل أي شيء آخر.

You cannot work anymore,

لا يمكن أن يعمل،ولا أن يحبّ.

you cannot love anymore.

You go home and don't recognize anyone.

يعود لمنزله، لا يتذكر أحداً.

You don't even recognize yourself.

ولا حتى نفسه.

يختبئ في منزله، ثم ينغلق!

You hide and don't leave the house, you lock yourself in, you become ill.

I know people who placed small cans outside their house with coins inside,

أعرف من كانوا يضعون مُعلبات صغيرة في الخارج

مع قطع نقدية في حالة مرور شخص من هناك.

in case someone tried to get in.

All of a sudden, you feel like you want to die or kill

وفجأة يرغب في الموت، يرغب في القتل،

or hide or run away.

يرغب في الاختباء، في الهرب،

You want to be loved, but you hate everyone.

يريد أن نحبه، يكره البشر،

It's a feeling that seizes you entirely

ثم يغمره شيء ما بين ليلة وضحاها،

day in and day out,

and you suffer tremendously.

ثم يعاني من المأساة. ولا يفهم الآخرون أي شيء.

And no one understands.

They say, "There's nothing wrong with you. You seem fine, you have no injuries.

يقولون له:"لا تقلق، أنت بخير،

لست مصاباً، لقد كنت في الحرب، وعدت."

You went to war, came back; you're fine."

هؤلاء الأشخاص يعانون وبعضهم ينتحرون:

These people suffer tremendously.

Some commit suicide.

بعد كل شيء، الإنتحار هو تحديث مذكرتك فقط

After all, suicide is like updating your daily planner --

I'm already dead, I might as well commit suicide.

ما دمت ميتاً أصلاً،

لا مشكلة إذا انتحرت، فلا ألم بعدها.

Plus, there is no more pain.

البعض ينتحرون، والبقية ينتهي بهم المطاف تحت الجسور

Some commit suicide, others end up under the bridge, drinking.

ويبدؤون الشرب...

لديكم جميعاً في ذاكرتكم قصة الجد أو العم/الخال،

Everyone remembers that grandfather or uncle or neighbor

أو الجار الذي كان يشرب، ولا يقول أي شيء،

who used to drink, never said a word,

always in a bad mood, beat his wife

الذي كان عنيفاً، ويضرب زوجته

and who would end up either sinking into alcoholism or dying.

والذي انتهى به الأمر إلى إدمان الشرب أو الموت.

And why do we not talk about this?

ولا يتحدثون عنه، لا نتحدث عنه، لماذا؟

We don't talk about it because it's taboo.

لأنه طابو! لا يمكننا القول،

It's not like we don't have the words to express the void of death.

لا يملك الإنسان الكلمات ليقول العدم والموت.

But others don't want hear it.

ولكن الآخرين لا يمكنهم سماعه!

The first time I returned from an assignment,

أنا عندما عُدت من العمل،

في المرة الأولى قالوا لي: "آه لقد عاد !"

They said, "Oh! He's back."

There was a fancy dinner -- white tablecloth, candles, guests.

كان هناك عشاء، وغطاء طاولة أبيض،

شموع، ومدعوون،

"Tell us everything!"

"تعالَ، احكِ!" ثم رويت لهم.

Which I did.

بعد 20 دقيقة اختلفت نظرة الجميع لي،

After 20 minutes, people were giving me dirty looks,

the hostess had her nose in the ashtray.

صاحبة المنزل حشرت أنفها في مرمدة السجائر

It was horrible and I realized I ruined the whole evening.

كان ذلك مرعباً،

وفهمت أني خرّبت الأمسية.

So I don't talk about it anymore.

لذلك الآن لم أعد أحكي،

لا أحد مستعد لسماع هذا،

We're just not ready to listen.

People say outright: "Please, stop."

يقولون: "آه، توقف!"

Is that a rare occurrence?

هل هي حالات نادرة؟

No, it's extremely common.

لا. إن هذا متكرر.

One third of the soldiers who died in Iraq --

ثلث الجنود الموتى في العراق...

well, not "died," let me re-phrase that --

أوه، الموتى، أعتذر عن زلة اللسان.

one third of the US soldiers who went to Iraq

ثلث الجنود العراقيين، الأمريكيين في العراق،

suffer from PTSD.

يعانون من اضطراب ما بعد الصدمة.

In 1939, there were still 200,000 soldiers from the First World War

that were being treated in British psychiatric hospitals.

In Vietnam, 54,000 people died --

Americans.

In 1987, the US government identified 102,000 --

سنة 1987، أحصت الحكومة الأمريكية

102.000 حالة انتحار بين الجنود.

twice as many --

102,000 veterans who died from committing suicide.

Twice as many deaths by suicide than by combat in Vietnam.

أكبر مرّتين من عدد موتى الفيتنام.

So you see, this relates to everything,

تفهمون إذن أنه شيء يغطي كلّ شيء!

not just modern warfare, but also ancient wars --

ليس فقط الحروب المعاصرة، الحروب القديمة،

you can read about it, the evidence is there.

نجدها في النصوص القديمة!

لقد تمّت روايتها، قولها،

So why do we not talk about it?

لم لا نتحدث عنها؟

Why have we not talked about it?

لماذا لم نتحدث عنها؟

لأن المشكلة أنه إذا لم يتحدث هذا الشخص

The problem is that if you don't talk about it,

you're heading for disaster.

فإنه يسير نحو الهاوية.

إذن، الطريقة الوحيدة للعلاج،

The only way to heal --

and the good news here is that this is treatable --

لأن الخبر الجيد هنا أنه يمكن معالجتها:

think Munch's The Scream, Goya, etc. --

صرخة ميونخ و غويا و غيرها، نعم يمكن معالجتها!

it's indeed treatable.

The only way to heal from this trauma,

الطريقة الوحيدة لمعالجة الصدمة،

from this encounter with death that overwhelms, petrifies and kills you

هذا اللقاء مع الموت، الذي يصدمك، يفزعك، ويقتلك،

is to find a way to express it.

هو أن تتمكن من الحديث عنه.

People used to say,

روى أحدهم عن القدامى :

"Language is the only thing that holds all of us together."

"نحن البشر نُواسي بعضنا البعض باللغة"

Without language, we're nothing.

إذا انعدمت اللغة، انعدمنا أيضاً.

It's the thing that makes us human.

نحن بشر فقط لهذا السبب.

In the face of such a horrible image --

وفي مواجهة صورة الرعب هذه،

a wordless image of oblivion that obsesses us --

التي لا كلمات لوصفها،

لأنها مجرد صورة عدم تستحوذ علينا،

the only way to cope with it

الطريقة الوحيدة للنفاذ بجلدنا،

is to put human words to it.

هي أن نعبر عنها بالكلمات البشرية.

Because these people feel excluded from humanity.

لأن هؤلاء يشعرون بأنهم مستبعدون من البشرية:

No one wants to see them anymore and they don't want to see anyone.

لا نرغب في رؤيتهم، ولا يرغبون في رؤيتنا.

They feel dirty, defiled, ashamed.

يشعرون بأنهم قذرون، ملوثون، مُخجلون.

Someone said, "Doctor, I don't use the subway anymore

قال أحدهم:" هل تعرف يا دكتور،

لم أعد أركب الميترو

because I'm afraid people will see the horror in my eyes."

لأني أخشى أن يرى الناس الفزع الذي بداخلي

في عيني."

Another guy thought he had a terrible skin disease

وقال آخر...--

كان مصابا بمرض جلدي مخيف،

and spent six months with dermatologists, going from doctor to doctor.

قضى 6 أشهر لدى طبيب الجلد،

تمّ تمريره من قسم إلى آخر،

وفي النهاية قالوا:" فليذهب لطبيب نفسي."

And then one day, they sent him to a psychiatrist.

ثم قال للطبيب في الحصة الثانية

During his second session, he told the psychiatrist

(كان مرضه الجلدي يمتد حتى قدميه)

he had a terrible skin disease from head to toe.

The psychiatrist asked, "Why are you in this state?"

قال:"لماذا أنت في هذه الحالة؟"

And the man said, "Well, because I'm dead, so I must be rotting away."

أجابه المريض:"لأنني ميت، إذن أنا أتحلل."

هل ترون إذن كيف يلمس هذا أعماق الناس.

So you see this is something that has a profound effect on people.

In order to heal, we need to talk about it.

للعلاج يجب الحديث عن هذا،

يجب التعبير عن الفزع بالكلمات.

The horror needs to be put into words --

human words, so we can organize it and talk about it again.

كلمات البشر، التّمكن من الحديث بعفوية،

We have to look death in the face.

يجب مواجهة الموت مباشرة.

And if we can do that, if we can talk about these things,

إذا نجحنا في فعل هذا، وتحدثنا عنه،

then step by step, by working it out verbally,

عندها، نبدأ في استعادة جانبنا البشري

شيئاً فشيئاً عن طريق الكلمات.

we can reclaim our place in humanity.

And it is important.

وهذا مهم، لأن الصمت يقتلنا!

Silence kills us.

So what does this mean?

ما معنى هذا؟ معناه اننا إذا فقدنا

It means that after a trauma,

without question, we lose our "unbearable lightness of being,"

خفّة الكائن التي لا تُحتمل،

that sense of immortality that keeps us here --

وفقدنا إحساسنا بالخلود الذي يجعلكم هنا،

meaning, if we're here, we almost feel like we're immortal, which we're not,

إذا كنتم هنا، فلأنكم تشعرون بقناعة

أنكم خالدون! لستم كذلك!

but if we didn't believe that, we'd say, "What's the point of it all?"

وإلاّ فلن تكونوا هنا، ستقولون:

"ما نفع هذا؟"

But trauma survivors have lost that feeling of immortality.

أما هم، فقدوا هذا الإحساس بالخلود.

They've lost their lightness.

فقدوا خفّتهم. ولكن وجدوا شيئاً آخر!

But they have found something else.

يعني أننا إذا بدأنا نرى الموت أمامنا،

So this means that if we manage to look death in the face,

and actually confront it, rather than keep quiet and hide,

وبدأنا نواجهه بدل الصمت والاختباء،

like some of the men or women I know did,

هناك رجال أو نساء أعرفهم

such as Michael from Rwanda, Carole from Iraq, Philippe from the Congo

-- مايكل من رواندا،

كارول من العراق، فيليب من الكونغو،

and other people I know,

كلّ من عرفتهم،

like Sorj Chalandon, now a great writer,

سورج كالوندون، الذي هو كاتب كبير الآن

who gave up field assignments after a trauma.

Five friends of mine committed suicide,

لدي 4 أو 5 أصدقاء انتحروا،

they're the ones who did not survive the trauma.

So if we can look death in the face,

إذا تمكنا من مواجهة الموت،

if we, mortal humans, human mortals,

إذا عرفنا نحن البشر الفانون،

understand that we are human and mortal, mortal and human,

أين نكون بشراً وفانين، فانين وبشر،

if we can confront death and identify it once again

إذا نجحنا في مواجهة هذا ووضعه على
