It was April 8, 2003.

We couldn't see a thing, but we knew what was happening.

Of course, I was supposed to be writing an article,

but that's how it always goes --

you're supposed to be writing and something big happens.

그래서 저는 16층 방에서,

So I was in my room on the 16th floor,

기사를 쓰면서 때때로 창 밖으로

writing and looking out the window every now and then

to see what was happening.

Suddenly, there was a huge explosion.

During the previous three weeks,

there had been shelling with half-ton missiles,

but this time, the shock --

I felt it inside of me,

and I thought, "It's very close.

It's very, very close."

So I went down to see what was happening.

I went down to the 15th floor

to take a look.

And I saw people, journalists, screaming in the hallways.

I walked into a room

and realized that it had been hit by a missile.

Someone had been wounded.

창문 근처에 한 남자가 있었는데

There was a man near the window,

타라스 프로셔크라는 카메라 맨이었습니다.

a cameraman named Taras Protsyuk,

lying face-down.

Having worked in a hospital before, I wanted to help out.

전 병원에서 일한 경험이 있어서 도와주고 싶었어요.

So I turned him over.

그래서 그를 뒤집었어요. 그를 뒤집었을때,

And when I turned him over,

I noticed that he was open from sternum to pubis,

but I couldn't see anything, nothing at all.

All I saw was a white, pearly, shiny spot that blinded me,

and I didn't understand what was going on.

Once the spot disappeared and I could see his wound,

which was very serious,

my buddies and I put a sheet underneath him,

and we carried him onto an elevator that stopped at each of the 15 floors.

We put him in a car that took him to the hospital.

He died on the way to the hospital.

병원으로 가는 중에 사망했어요. 그리고 스페인 카메라맨인

The Spanish cameraman José Couso, who was on the 14th floor and also hit --

호세 코우소도 포탄에 맞아 14층에서 다쳤었습니다.

because the shell had exploded between the two floors --

왜냐하면 포탄이 두 층 사이에서 폭발했거든요.

그도 수술대 위에서 사망했습니다.

died on the operating table.

As soon as the car left, I went back.

차에서 내리자마자 저는 돌아갔어요. 써야하는 기사가 있었거든요.

There was that article I was supposed to write --

which I had to write.

꼭 써야했던 기사였어요.

And so --

I returned to the hotel lobby with my arms covered in blood,

팔이 피범벅인 채로 호텔 로비로 들어갔는데,

when one of the hotel gofers stopped me

호텔의 잡심부름꾼 하나가 저를 멈추더니

and asked me to pay the tax I hadn't paid for 10 days.

10일 동안 안 낸 세금을 내라고 했어요.

저는 꺼지라고 했죠. 그리고는 스스로에게 말했어요.

I told him to get lost.

And I said to myself: "Clear your head, put it all aside.

"머리를 비우자. 잠시 잊어!

If you want to write, you need to put it all aside."

글을 쓰려면, 다 접어둬야 해."

And that's what I did.

그래서 그렇게 했어요. 저는 올라가서 기사를 다 쓰고,

I went upstairs, wrote my article and sent it off.

보냈어요. 하지만 그 후에,

Later, aside from the feeling of having lost my colleagues,

동료들을 잃은 후유증 외에

something else was bothering me.

I kept seeing that shiny, pearly spot,

and I couldn't understand what it meant.

And then, the war was over.

Later, I thought: "That's not possible. I can't just not know what happened."

Because it wasn't the first time, and it didn't only happen to me.

I have seen things like that happen to others

in my 20 to 35 years of reporting.

I have seen things that had an effect on me too.

저에게도 영향을 끼치는 것들도 봤어요.

For example, there was this man I knew in Lebanon,

일례로, 레바논에서 어떤 남자를 알았었는데

a 25-year-old veteran who had been fighting for five years --

5년 동안 싸우고 있던 25살 참전 용사였습니다.

참전 용사였기 떄문에 우리는 그를 어디든 따라 다녔어요!

a real veteran -- who we would follow everywhere.

He would crawl in the dark with confidence --

그는 어둠 속을 자신있게 기어다니는

he was a great soldier, a true soldier --

so we would follow him, knowing that we would be safe with him.

그래서 그를 따라다녔어요. 그와 함께라면 안전할 테니까요.

그리고 어느 날, 그에 대해 전해 들었어요.

And one day, as I was told --

and I've seen him again since --

부대로 돌아와 카드 놀이를 하고 있었는데,

he was back in the camp, playing cards,

when someone came in next door,

누군가가 옆 막사로 들어와 총을 쏘았습니다.

and discharged their weapon.

As the gun went off,

총을 쏘자 그 총알 한 발에

that blast, that one shot, made him duck quickly under the table,

like a child.

He was shaking, panicking.

그는 떨고 있었고 겁에 질려 있었어요.

And since then, he has never been able to get up and fight.

He ended up working as a croupier

in a Beirut casino where I later found him,

because he couldn't sleep, so it was quite a suitable job.

So I thought to myself,

"What is this thing that can kill you

사람을 죽게 만들 수 있는 이 이상한 게 대체 뭘까?

without leaving any visible scars?

How does that happen?

What is this unknown thing?"

우연의 일치라고 하기엔 너무 흔했어요.

It was too common to be coincidental.

그래서 저는 조사를 시작했어요,

So I started to investigate --

that's all I know how to do.

할 줄 아는게 그것 뿐이었거든요. 그래서 책에도 찾아보고

I started to investigate

by looking through books,

정신과 의사도 만나고, 박물관과 도서관 등을 다 찾아봤어요.

reaching out to psychiatrists,

going to museums, libraries, etc.

Finally, I discovered that some people knew about this --

그리고 마침내 이것에 대해 알고 있는 사람들을 발견했어요.

often military psychiatrists --

대부분이 군대 정신과 의사들이었는데

and that what we were dealing with was called trauma.

우리가 겪고 있는 것이 트라우마라고 했어요.

Americans call it PTSD or traumatic neurosis.

미국에서는 외상 후 스트레스 장애 (PTSD)라고 부릅니다.

It was something

존재는 하지만 아무도 그것에 대해 이야기하지 않는 것이었죠.

that existed,

but that we never spoke about.

그럼 '트라우마'가 도대체 무엇일까요?

So, this trauma --

what is it?

Well, it's an encounter with death.

죽음과의 조우입니다.

죽음을 경험한 적이 있으신 지 모르겠네요. 죽은 시체를 본다거나

I don't know if you've ever had an experience with death --

I'm not talking about dead bodies,

누군가의 할아버지가 병원 침대에 누워 계시는 것을 말하는 게 아니에요!

or someone's grandfather lying in a hospital bed,

or someone who got hit by a car.

혹은 차에 치인 사람을 말하는 것도 아니고요.

I'm talking about facing the void of death.

제가 말하는 건 죽음의 공허함을 마주한 경험입니다.

And that is something no one is supposed to see.

그건 아무도 보면 안 되는 거죠.

People used to say,

이런 옛말이 있어요 "태양과 죽음은 맨눈으로 볼 수 없다."

"Neither the sun, nor death can be looked at with a steady eye."

A human being should not have to face the void of death.

어떤 인간도 그런 죽음의 공허함을 마주해서는 안됩니다.

하지만 만약, 그런 일이 일어나면,

But when that happens,

it can remain invisible for a while --

days, weeks, months, sometimes years.

며칠, 몇 주, 혹은 몇달, 몇년동안 안 보일 수 있습니다.

And then, at some point,

그러다 갑자기 폭발합니다. 뇌로 돌아왔기 때문입니다.

it explodes,

because it's something that has entered your brain --

우리 뇌를 꿰뚫은 이미지와 정신 사이의

a sort of window between an image and your mind --

창문 같은 것이죠. 뇌에 머물러 있으면서

that has penetrated your brain,

staying there and taking up all the space inside.

그 안의 모든 공간을 차지할거에요.

And there are people -- men, women,

그리고 남자건, 여자건, 갑자기 더 이상 잠을 잘 수 없는

who suddenly no longer sleep.

사람들도 있습니다.

그리고 그들은 심각한 불안발작에 시달립니다.

And they experience horrible anxiety attacks --

panic attacks, not just minor fears.

공포로 인한 것이죠. 가벼운 두려움이 아닙니다.

They suddenly don't want to sleep,

그들은 갑자기 잠을 자는 걸 싫어하게 됩니다.

because when they do, they have the same nightmare every night.

잠을 자면 매일 밤 같은 악몽에 시달리게 되기 때문입니다.

They see the same image every night.

매일 밤 똑같은 그림을 꿈에서 봅니다. 무슨 그림일까요?

What type of image?

For example, a soldier who enters a building

한 군인을 예로 들자면,

그가 건물에 들어갑니다.

그리고 그를 향해 총을 겨누는 또 다른 군인을 마주하게 됩니다.

and comes face to face with another soldier aiming at him.

He looks at the gun, straight down the barrel.

그는 총구를 바라봅니다.

And this barrel suddenly becomes enormous, deformed.

그런데 갑자기 이 총이 커다랗게 변합니다.

복실복실해지면서 모든 것을 삼켜버립니다.

It becomes fluffy, swallowing everything.

And he says --

후에 그는 말합니다, "죽음을 봤어. 내가 죽는 걸 봤어. 나는 죽었어."

later he will say, "I saw death.

I saw myself dead, therefore I'm dead."

그 후로 그는 자신이 죽었다고 알고 있어요.

And from then on, he knows he is dead.

이건 자각이 아니예요. 그는 자기가 죽었다고 확신하고 있어요.

It is not a perception -- he is convinced that he is dead.

하지만 실제로는, 누군가가 들어왔고 그냥 나갔거나 총을 쏘지 않았습니다,

In reality, someone came in, the guy left or didn't shoot, whatever,

and he didn't actually get shot --

그는 총에 맞지 않았는데 그 순간에 죽은 사람이 됐습니다.

but to him, he died in that moment.

납골당 냄새 때문에 그랬을 수도 있어요.

Or it can be the smell of a mass grave --

르완다에서 그런 사례를 많이 봤어요.

I saw a lot of that in Rwanda.

나를 부르는 친구의 소리 때문이었을 지도 몰라요.

It can be the voice of a friend calling,

and they're being slaughtered and there's nothing you can do.

친구들이 학살당하는 동안 자신은 아무것도 할 수 없었던 거죠.

You hear that voice,

그런 목소리들을 듣고,

and you wake up every night -- for weeks, months --

몇 주, 몇 달을 매일 밤 자다가 깹니다.

in a trance-like state, anxious and terrified,

최면에 걸린 것처럼, 불안하고 겁에 질린 아이처럼.

like a child.

I have seen men cry --

같은 이미지를 보고 어린아이처럼 우는

just like children --

from seeing the same image.

남자들도 본 적이 있습니다.

So having that image of horror in your brain,

머릿속에 있는 이 공포스러운 이미지가,

seeing the void of death --

죽음의 공허함이

that analogue of horror which is hiding something --

무언가를 숨기는 심상의

공포라는 유사체가,

will completely take over.

장악할 것입니다.

You cannot do anything, anything at all.

우리는 아무것도 할 수 없어요. 아무것도요.

You cannot work anymore,

더 이상 일도 못하고, 더 이상 누굴 사랑하지도 못합니다.

you cannot love anymore.

You go home and don't recognize anyone.

집에 가서도 아무도 못 알아봐요. 자기 자신도 못 알아봐요.

You don't even recognize yourself.

집에서 숨어 나가지도 않고 스스로를 가두고 병이 듭니다.

You hide and don't leave the house, you lock yourself in, you become ill.

I know people who placed small cans outside their house with coins inside,

누가 혹시 들어오려고 할까봐

집 밖에 동전을 넣은 작은 캔을 놓는 사람도 있습니다.

in case someone tried to get in.

그리고 갑자기 어느 순간 죽고 싶거나, 죽이고 싶거나

All of a sudden, you feel like you want to die or kill

or hide or run away.

어디에 숨거나 도망가고 싶어집니다.

You want to be loved, but you hate everyone.

누군가에게 사랑받고 싶지만 모두가 싫습니다.

It's a feeling that seizes you entirely

이 기분에 밤낮으로 완전히 사로잡히고

day in and day out,

and you suffer tremendously.

끔찍하게 시달립니다.

And no one understands.

하지만 아무도 이해를 못해요!

They say, "There's nothing wrong with you. You seem fine, you have no injuries.

남들은 말합니다. "넌 아무런 문제가 없어.

멀쩡해 보여. 상처도 없고, 살아 돌아왔고, 넌 괜찮아."

You went to war, came back; you're fine."

이들은 후유증에 심하게 시달리고 어떤 이는 자살합니다,

These people suffer tremendously.

Some commit suicide.

나는 이미 죽은 사람이니까, 자살해도 내 일상과

After all, suicide is like updating your daily planner --

I'm already dead, I might as well commit suicide.

다를 게 없죠.

자살해도 괜찮습니다. 게다가 더 이상 고통도 없겠죠.

Plus, there is no more pain.

누구는 자살을하고,

Some commit suicide, others end up under the bridge, drinking.

누구는 다리 밑에서

술을 마십니다...

맨날 술을 마시고, 말은 한 마디도 안하고

Everyone remembers that grandfather or uncle or neighbor

항상 기분이 안 좋고, 아내를 때리고,

who used to drink, never said a word,

always in a bad mood, beat his wife

그러다가 결국 알콜중독자가 되거나 죽은

and who would end up either sinking into alcoholism or dying.

할아버지나 삼촌이나 이웃에 대한 기억을 누구나 갖고 있을 겁니다.

And why do we not talk about this?

그들은 왜 말을 안할까요? 왜 우리는 이것에 대해 말을 안할까요?

We don't talk about it because it's taboo.

이것이 금기시되기 때문입니다. 죽음을 공허함을 표현하는 단어가

It's not like we don't have the words to express the void of death.

없는 것도 아닌데 말입니다.

But others don't want hear it.

하지만 사람들은 듣기 싫어합니다.

The first time I returned from an assignment,

제가 파견에서 돌아왔을 때

사람들은 말했습니다. "아! 돌아왔구나!"

They said, "Oh! He's back."

There was a fancy dinner -- white tablecloth, candles, guests.

"Tell us everything!"

"다 얘기해봐!"라길래 얘기했습니다.

Which I did.

20분이 지나자 사람들은 제게 기분 나쁜 눈길을 던졌습니다.

After 20 minutes, people were giving me dirty looks,

the hostess had her nose in the ashtray.

집주인은 재떨이에 코를 박고 있었습니다.

It was horrible and I realized I ruined the whole evening.

바로 공포였습니다.

저는 제가 저녁을 망쳤다는 걸 알아차렸습니다.

So I don't talk about it anymore.

We're just not ready to listen.

People say outright: "Please, stop."

Is that a rare occurrence?

No, it's extremely common.

One third of the soldiers who died in Iraq --

이라크에서 죽은 군인의 3분의 1이, "죽은"건 아니지만, 다시 말하자면

well, not "died," let me re-phrase that --

one third of the US soldiers who went to Iraq

이라크에 다녀온 미군의 3분의 1이 PTSD에 시달립니다.

suffer from PTSD.

In 1939, there were still 200,000 soldiers from the First World War

제1차 세계대전에 참전한 군인 중 20만명이

1939년에도 여전히 영국 정신병원에서 치료받고 있었습니다.

that were being treated in British psychiatric hospitals.

베트남 전쟁에서는 5만4천명의 미국인이 죽었습니다.

In Vietnam, 54,000 people died --

Americans.

In 1987, the US government identified 102,000 --

1987년에 미정부는 그 2배인 10만2천명의 참전용사가

twice as many --

102,000 veterans who died from committing suicide.

자살했다고 확인했습니다.

Twice as many deaths by suicide than by combat in Vietnam.

베트남에서 전쟁 중에 죽은 사망자 수의 2배입니다.

So you see, this relates to everything,

그러니까 이게 모든 것과 다 관련이 있는 겁니다!

not just modern warfare, but also ancient wars --

현대의 전쟁 뿐만이 아니라 고대의 전쟁의 사례도

you can read about it, the evidence is there.

문헌으로 볼 수 있습니다. 증거가 있습니다.

So why do we not talk about it?

우린 왜 이야기를 안 하는 걸까요?

Why have we not talked about it?

왜 여태까지 얘기를 안 한 걸까요? 왜냐하면 문제는,

The problem is that if you don't talk about it,

우리가 이야기하지 않으면 재앙으로 치닫는다는 겁니다.

you're heading for disaster.

치유할 수 있는 유일한 방법은,

The only way to heal --

and the good news here is that this is treatable --

여기서 좋은 소식은 치유할 수 있다는 겁니다.

think Munch's The Scream, Goya, etc. --

뭉크의 절규와 고야 등을 생각해 보세요. 치유할 수 있어요.

it's indeed treatable.

여러분을 장악하고, 공포에 질리게 만들고, 죽이는,

The only way to heal from this trauma,

from this encounter with death that overwhelms, petrifies and kills you

죽음과의 조우로 인한 트라우마를 치료할 유일한 방법은,

is to find a way to express it.

그걸 표현할 길을 찾는 겁니다.

People used to say,

이런 옛말이 있죠.

"Language is the only thing that holds all of us together."

"우리를 단결시키는 유일한 도구는 언어이다."

Without language, we're nothing.

언어 없이 우리는 아무것도 아닙니다.

It's the thing that makes us human.

언어가 우리를 인간답게 만듭니다.

In the face of such a horrible image --

우리를 끈질기게 괴롭히는

a wordless image of oblivion that obsesses us --

무언의 공허한,

끔찍한 이미지를 마주했을 때,

the only way to cope with it

그걸 해결할 유일한 방법은

인간의 언어를 붙이는 겁니다.

is to put human words to it.

이들은 인류에게서 소외됐다고 느끼기 때문이죠. 아무도 그들이 보고 싶지 않고

Because these people feel excluded from humanity.

No one wants to see them anymore and they don't want to see anyone.

그들도 아무도 보고 싶지 않습니다.

They feel dirty, defiled, ashamed.

그들은 자신이 더럽혀졌다고 느끼고 수치스러워 합니다.

Someone said, "Doctor, I don't use the subway anymore

누군가 말하길, "의사 선생님, 저는 더 이상

because I'm afraid people will see the horror in my eyes."

Another guy thought he had a terrible skin disease

and spent six months with dermatologists, going from doctor to doctor.

And then one day, they sent him to a psychiatrist.

"정신과 의사를 보게 합시다."

During his second session, he told the psychiatrist

두 번째 상담 때 정신과 의사에게

he had a terrible skin disease from head to toe.

The psychiatrist asked, "Why are you in this state?"

정신과 의사가 물었습니다. "왜 피부병에 걸리셨나요?"

And the man said, "Well, because I'm dead, so I must be rotting away."

그는 대답했습니다. "전 죽었으니까요. 그래서 썩고 있는 거예요."

So you see this is something that has a profound effect on people.

In order to heal, we need to talk about it.

치유를 위해 우리는 이것에 대해 얘기해야 합니다. 그리고 또 다시

The horror needs to be put into words --

얘기할 수 있도록 정리하기 위해 이 공포는 말로 표현돼야 합니다.

human words, so we can organize it and talk about it again.

We have to look death in the face.

우리는 죽음을 똑바로 마주봐야 합니다.

그걸 할 수 있으면 이것에 대해 이야기 할 수 있습니다.

And if we can do that, if we can talk about these things,

then step by step, by working it out verbally,

그러면 단계적으로 말로 풀어나가면서

we can reclaim our place in humanity.

인류에의 우리의 자리를 되찾을 수 있습니다.

And it is important.

이건 중요한 일입니다. 침묵은 우리를 죽이고 있습니다.

Silence kills us.

So what does this mean?

이게 무슨 뜻일까요? 트라우마를 겪은 후에 우리는

It means that after a trauma,

명백히 "참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움"을 잃는다는 겁니다.

without question, we lose our "unbearable lightness of being,"

that sense of immortality that keeps us here --

우리를 여기 있게 만드는 불멸의 느낌이죠.

meaning, if we're here, we almost feel like we're immortal, which we're not,

우리는 존재하면, 불멸의 존재인 것인양

느낀다는 뜻입니다. 하지만 그렇지 않습니다!

but if we didn't believe that, we'd say, "What's the point of it all?"

하지만 그렇게 생각치 않았다면 우린 "무슨 소용이지?"라고 하겠죠.

하지만 트라우마 생존자들은 불멸의 느낌을 잃었습니다.

But trauma survivors have lost that feeling of immortality.

They've lost their lightness.

그들은 존재의 가벼움을 잃었지만 다른 것을 찾았습니다.

But they have found something else.

이 말은, 우리가 죽음을 똑바로 쳐다볼 수 있으면

So this means that if we manage to look death in the face,

and actually confront it, rather than keep quiet and hide,

트라우마 이후 보도하는 일을 그만두고 떠나서

who gave up field assignments after a trauma.

이제 위대한 작가가 된 소르주 샬랑동도 있습니다.

Five friends of mine committed suicide,

제 친구 4,5명은 자살했습니다.

they're the ones who did not survive the trauma.

트라우마에서 살아남지 못한 사람들이죠.

So if we can look death in the face,

그러니까 죽음을 정면으로 바라보면,

if we, mortal humans, human mortals,

유한한 생명을 가진 인간인 우리가,

understand that we are human and mortal, mortal and human,

인간이고 유한하고, 유한하고 인간이라는 걸 이해하면,

if we can confront death and identify it once again

죽음에 맞서서 죽음을 재정의할 수 있으면,

as the most mysterious place of all mysterious places,

아무도 본 적이 없기 때문에 신비로운 곳 중에서

가장 신비로운 곳으로 말이죠,

since no one has ever seen it --

죽음에게 그 의미를 되돌려줄 수 있으면,

if we can give it back this meaning,

yes, we may die,

우리가 죽을 수도 있고 살아남아 소생할 수도 있지만

survive

and come back to life,

but we'll come back stronger than before.

그 이전보다 훨씬 더 강해질 겁니다.
