Nanahuatl, weakest of the Aztec gods, sickly and covered in pimples,

had been chosen to form a new world.

There had already been four worlds, each set in motion by its own “Lord Sun,"

and each, in turn, destroyed:

the first by jaguars, the next by winds,

the next by rains of fire, and the fourth by floods.

To establish the Fifth Sun,

بۆ درووست کردنی جیهانی پێنجەم، خۆر،

Lord Quetzalcoatl, the “Feathered Serpent,”

خواوەند كيتسالكواتل کە مارێکی دڕندە دەبێت،

had gone to the underworld and returned with the bones of earlier people,

رۆدەچێتە جیهانی خوارەوە و هێسکی کەسانی مردوو کۆدەکاتەوە،

nourishing them with his own blood to create new life.

But for them to have a world to live in,

another god had to leap into the great bonfire and become the fifth sun.

پێویستی دەکرد خواوەندێکی تر بچێتە ئاسمان و ببێتە خۆری پێنجەم.

The Lord of Sustenance and the Lord of Fire had chosen Nanahuatl for this task,

خواوەندی ڕۆزی و ئاگر ناناواتیان بەربژێر کرد بۆ ئەم ئەرکە،

while the Lord of Rain and the Lord of the Four Quarters

ئەم لە کاتێکدا، خواوەندی باران و خواوەندی وەرزەکان

had picked their own offering: the proud, rich Tecciztecatl.

تيكسيستاكاتی زەنگینیان بۆ ئەم ئەرکە بەربژێر کرد.

First, the chosen ones had to complete a four-day fasting and bloodletting ritual.

بەربژێرەکان دەبوایە چوار ڕۆژ بەڕۆژوو بن و دواتر خوێنیان وەک قوربانی ببەخشن.

Nanahuatl had nothing but cactus thorns with which to bleed himself,

ناناوات تەنها گەڵای کاتەسی دەبێت بۆ ئەوەی خۆی بریندار بکات و خوێن ببەخشێت،

and fir branches to paint with his red offering,

لاسکی قامیشی لا دەبێت بۆ ئەوەی لە خوێنی خۆی وێنە بکێشێت،

but he resolved to try his best.

بەڵام سوور بوو هەوڵی باش دەدات.

Meanwhile, Tecciztecatl flaunted his riches,

لە هەمان کاتدا، تيكسيستاكات بە سەروەتەکەی دەنازێت و

using magnificent jade spines and branches adorned with iridescent quetzal feathers

پەڕی گرانبەها و پەڕێ ڕازاوە بەکار دەهێنێت

for his own blood offering.

بۆ بریندار کردنی خۆی و قوربانیدان.

When four days had passed, the fire was roaring high.

دوای تێپەڕبوونی چوار ڕۆژەکە، ئاگر هەموو جیهان دەتەنێتەوە.

Four times proud Tecciztecatl approached the flames,

تيكسيستاكات لە خۆ بایی، چوار جار لە ئاگرەکە نزیک دەبێتەوە،

and four times he pulled back in fear.

هەر چوار جار لە ترسان دەگەڕێتەوە دواوە.

Humble Nanahuatl stepped forward.

ناناواتی سادە بەرەو ئاگرەکە هەنگاو دەنێت.

The other gods painted him chalky white and glued feathers to him.

خواوەندەکانی تر بۆیەی سپیان پێدا دەکەن و بە پەڕ لاشەی ناناوات دادەپۆشن.

Without hesitation, he threw himself into the flames.

بەبێ بیرکردنەوە، خۆی دەخاتە ناو ئاگرەکە.

A fire-blackened eagle swooped over the fire,

لە ناو ئاگرەکە، هەڵۆیەکی ڕەش بەرز دەبێتەوە،

grabbed Nanahuatl and carried him into the sky.

ناناوات دەگرێت و بۆ ئاسمان بەرزی دەکاتەوە.

There, Lord and Lady Sustenance bathed him,

لەوێدا، خواوەند و خوابانووی ڕۆزی ناناوات دەشۆن،

sat him on a feathered throne, and wrapped a red band around his head.

لەسەر کورسیەکی لە پەڕ درووست کراو دایدەنیشێنن و تاجێکی سوریش دەکەنە سەری.

Inspired by Nanahuatl,

بەهۆی سەرسامی بە ناناوات،

Tecciztecatl threw himself into what was left of the fire: cooled ashes.

تيكسيستاكات خۆی دەخاتە ناو پاشماوەی ئاگرەکە، ژیلەمۆی سارد بووەوە.

A jaguar jumped over the fire pit, but couldn’t carry Tecciztecatl into the sky.

جاگوارێک بازدەداتە ناو ئاگرەکە، بەڵام نەی- توانی تيكسيستاكات هەڵبگرێت بەرەو ئاسمان.

When Tecciztecatl reached the horizon, a band of goddesses dressed him in rags.

کاتێک تيكسيستاكات دەگاتە ئاسۆ، کۆمەڵێک خواوەند بەرگی بالیەی لەبەر دەکەن.

Still, he shined just as brightly as Nanahuatl.

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا وەک ناناوات دەگەشایەوە.

But since he had shown far less bravery and much more pride,

بەڵأم بە هۆی ئەوەی لە خۆبایی دەبێت و ئازایی دەرناخات،

one of the gods picked up a rabbit and tossed it in his face,

یەکێک لە خواوەندەکان کەروێشکێک هەڵدەگرێت و بە دەموچاوی دادەدات،

dimming his light.

کە گەشانەوەکەی کەم دەبێتەوە.

But the fifth world still wasn’t truly established.

بەڵام جیهانی پێنجەم هێشتا بنیات نەنرا بوو.

Nanahuatl, Lord Sun, shined for four days straight

ناناوات، خواوەندی خۆر، بۆ ماوەی چوار ڕۆژ لە ئاسمان دەگەشایەوە

without moving through the sky like all the previous suns had moved.

بەبێ ئەوەی لە ئاسماندا ببزوێت بە پێچەوانەی خواوەندەکانی پێشووتری خۆر.

Back in their home, Teotihuacan, the gods began to worry.

لە ماڵەوەیاندا، تيوتيواكان، خوداوەندەکان قەلەق دەبن.

They sent Obsidian Hawk up to ask what was wrong.

ئەوان بازێکی ئۆبیسیان دەنێرن بۆ ئەوەی بزانن چی دەگوزەرێت.

Nanahuatl replied that just as he had sacrificed himself to become Lord Sun,

ناناوات وەڵام دەداتەوە کە خۆی کردووە بە قوربانی بۆ ئەوەی ببێتە خواوەندی خۆر،

he now needed the nourishing blood of the other gods

ئێستا پێویستی بە خوێنی خواوەندەکانی دیکە هەیە بۆ ئەوەی

in order to move through the sky.

بۆ ئەوەی بتوانێت لە ئاسمان ببزوێت.

Enraged at this suggestion, Lord Dawn stepped up and shot an arrow at Lord Sun.

بەهۆی توڕەبوونی، خواوەندی بەرەبەیان تیرێک لە خواوەندی خۆر دەگرێت.

Lord Sun shot back,

خواوەندی خۆر تیرێکی تێدەگرێتەوە،

and his quetzal-feathered arrows struck Lord Dawn in the face,

تیرە کوارتێزە بە پەڕ داپۆشراوەکە بەر ڕوخساری خواوەندی بەرەبەیان دەکەوێت،

turning him to frost.

دەبێتە سەهۆڵ.

Before anyone else could act rashly,

پێش ئەوەی بڕیاری بەپەلە بدەن،

the other gods turned to each other to discuss what to do.

خواوەندەکان کۆدەبنەوە و بیر دەکەنەوە کە چی بکەن.

Of course, no one wanted to sacrifice themselves,

بە دڵنیاییەوە، هیچیان نەیاندەویست خۆیان بکەنە قوربانی،

but nor did anyone want to act like Lord Dawn.

بەڵام هیچیان نەیاندەویست وەک خواوەندی بەرەبەیان بکەن.

Besides, Nanahuatl had held up his end of the bargain to nourish the earth—

جگە لەوەش، ناناوات خۆی بەخشی بۆ ئەوەی ژیان بە زەوی ببەخشێت،

how could they refuse to nourish him in return?

بۆیە، چۆن دەتوانن داواکەی ڕەت بکەنەوە؟

They remembered how even the wimpy Tecciztecatl

بە بیریان هاتوە کە چۆن تيكسيستاكاتی ترسنۆک

had eventually managed to emulate Nanahuatl's bravery.

لە کۆتایدا توانی لاسایی ئازایەتی ناناوات بکات.

At long last, five other gods agreed to sacrifice themselves.

لە کۆتایدا، پێنج خواداوەندی کە بڕیاریاندا کە خۆیان بکەنە قوربانی.

One by one, Lord Death stabbed them in the heart with an obsidian knife,

یەک لە دوای یەک، خواوەندی مردن چەقویەکی لە دڵیانی دەدا،

offering their bodies to their new Lord Sun.

As the last god made the sacrifice,

Lord Quetzalcoatl blew the embers of the great fire back to life,

and the sun began to move through the sky at last,

لە کۆتایدا خۆر دەتوانێت لە ئاسمان بجوڵێت،

ushering in the fifth age.

سەردەمی خواوەندی خۆری پێنجەم دەست پێدەکات.

Thanks to a pimply weakling whose fortitude inspired all the other gods,

سوپاس بۆ ئەو خواوەندە لاوازەی کە ئازایەتی دەبەخشێتە خواوەندەکانی تر،

the sun moves along its daily path,

خۆر لە خولگەی ڕۆژانەی خۆی دەسوڕێتەوە،

the rabbit-faced moon following in its wake.

و مانگی کەروێشک-رووخسار لە دەوری بە لاوازی دەسوڕێتەوە.
