Before the world of humans began,

there was the world of the gods, made of fields, plains and gardens.

Four brothers wandered this celestial realm.

They had no family other than each other—

they didn’t even know who their parents were.

One of the brothers, Deminan, looked different from the others.

His skin was covered in painful scabs,

پێستی بە برینی بە ئازار داپۆشرا بوو،

and he wondered why he alone had been marked with this affliction.

تێنەدەگەیشت کە بۆچی تەنها ئەو پێستی بەم جۆرەیە.

One day, while the supreme spirit Yaya was out in his gardens,

ڕۆژێک، روحی باڵا، یایا، لە دەرەوەی باخچەکەی بوو،

Deminan and his brothers snuck into Yaya’s house.

دیمینان و براکانی خۆیان خستە ماڵی یایا.

After feasting and exploring, they spotted a giant gourd hanging in the corner.

دوای نان خواردن و سوڕانەوە، کولەکەیەکی شەش مانگی زەبەلاحیان لە سوچێکدا دیت.

بەڵام کاتێک ویستیان سەیری ناوەوەی کولەکەکە بکەن لە دەستیان کەوتە خوارەوە.

But as they tried to look inside the gourd, they dropped it.

The gourd broke apart, releasing a deluge that swept the brothers away,

کولەکەکە تێکشکاو و بووە هۆی درووست بوونی لافاوێک کە چوار براکەی ڕاماڵی،

separating them from the celestial lands forever.

و بۆ هەمیشە لە خاکی ئاسمانییەکان جیای کردنەوە.

The waters from the gourd formed a new world.

ئاوی ناو کولەکەکە جیهانێکی تازەی درووست کرد.

This realm was covered in seas, which didn’t exist in the gods’ world.

ئەم جیهانە بە زەریاکان داپۆشرابوو و لە جیهانی خواوەندەکان نەبوو.

The waters were full of fish and other creatures,

ئەم جیهانە ئاوییانە پڕ بوون لە ماسی، بوونەوەریتر،

and dotted with islands and caves.

دورگە و شاخ.

This world of seas was also cut off completely from the celestial realm,

جیهانی ئاوەکان بە تەواوەتی لە جیهانی ئاسمانییەکان جیاکرابووەوە،

and the brothers wandered aimlessly,

برایەکان بە بێ ئامانج دەسوڕانەوە،

even more lost than they had been before.

و لە هەموو کاتێک زیاتر ونبووبوون.

One day, three of the brothers stumbled upon a house.

ڕۆژێک، سێ لە برایەکان لە سەر ماڵێک گیرسانەوە.

In the house lived an elder named Bayamanacao, and he invited them in.

بایامانوکو خاوەنی ماڵەکە، کەسێکی بە تەمەن بوو و بانگێشتی کردن بۆ ماڵەکەی.

When Deminan caught up slightly later, he followed them into the house.

کاتێک دیمینان دواتر گەیشتە ماڵەکە، ئەویش چووە ماڵەکە.

Bayamanacao told the brothers he was their grandfather

بایامانوکو بە براکان دەڵێت من باپیرە گەورەتانم

and gave them a gift of special cassava bread.

دیارییەکی تایبەتیان پێ دەبەخشێت کە پارچە سەمونێکی کاساڤا بوو.

He revealed their family lineage to them:

مێژووی خێزانەکەیانیان بۆ براکان ئاشکرا کرد:

their mother had been the Earth Mother Goddess Itibi Cahubaba

خواوەندی دایکە زەوی، ئیتیب، کاهوبابایە

and had died when they were born.

لە کاتی لە دایکبوونی براکان مردووە.

The brothers were grateful for his hospitality and insight into their past.

براکان سوپاسی پیاوەکەیان کرد بۆ مێواندارێتی و ئاشکرا کردنی ڕابردوویان.

But then Bayamanacao turned on Deminan,

پێش ئەوەی بڕۆن، بایاماکاکۆ سەیری دیمینانی کرد،

blowing tobacco spittle from his nose onto Deminan’s back.

دوکەڵی توتنی ناو سییەکانی بە پشتی دیمینان کرد.

The spot where the spittle landed immediately began to swell and sting.

ئەو بەشەی کە دوکەڵەکەی بەرکەوت، زوورایەو بۆنی ناخۆشی دەرکرد.

Soon Deminan was delirious

دیمینان زۆر زوو بێهۆش بوو

and his back was so swollen his brothers feared he would die.

و پشتی زۆر ئازاری هەبوو بەجۆرێک براکانی پێان وابوو دەمرێت.

Not knowing what else to do, they cut open the welt.

نەیاندەزانی چی بکەن، برینەکەیان کردەوە.

A turtle emerged from the wound and swam away,

کیسەڵێک هاتە دەرەوە و ڕای کرد.

alternating easily between sea and land as she went.

بە ئاسانی لە نێوان زەریا و وشکانییەکان هاتووچۆی دەکرد.

When Deminan recovered from his delirium,

کاتێک دیمینان بە هۆش هاتەوە،

he finally understood what the curse of his disease meant:

لە کۆتاییدا تێگەیشت نەخۆشییەکەی چییە:

he was a caracaracol, able to communicate with the gods.

He was the link between the celestial realm and the earthly realm.

Deminan was the first in a long lineage of caracaracols.

The world of seas he and his brothers had created when they dropped the gourd

جیهانی زەریاکان، ئەو جیهانەی دیمینان و براکانی لە ئاوی کولەکەکە درووستیان کرد

became the world of humans,

دەبێتە جیهانی مرۆڤەکان،

where the caracaracols who followed Deminan maintained the delicate balance

between people and gods.

But their unique power came at a price:

Deminan and all the caracaracols who followed him

دیمینان و گشت پەیڕەوکەرانی

continued to suffer from the illness that had first marked Deminan as special.

بە دەست هەمان ئەو ئازارە دەگمەنانەی دیمینانەوە دەیان ناڵاند،

Represented in Taino carvings and figurines

تاتۆی تایانۆ و کارەکتەریتر لە سەر لاشەیان دەردەکەوێت

with a swollen back and emaciated arms,

و پشتی چەماوە و بازوی بێهێزیان دەناسرێنەوە،

the caracaracol is both cursed and blessed to be a conduit between worlds.
