Using the word Shakespeare

within any classroom in the 21st century

has become almost as dangerous for teachers

After uttering this simple word,

the common teacher is met with a mass of groans,

devastated looks,

and the occasional chair tossed in his or her direction.

But Shakespearean works are not boring,

كاره‌كانی شکسپی به‌م شێوه‌یه‌ش وەڕەسکەر و گران،

confusing,

long and painful plays written more than 400 years ago.

They're adventures relating to the extremities

all originated from William's brilliant brain.

And there are many echoes

دەنگدانەوەیەکی زۆر ھەیە

of Shakespeare's romantic language too.

لە زمانە ڕۆمانسیه‌كه‌ی شکسپیر.

ئەگەر "ڕۆمیۆ و جولێت"ت خوێند بێته‌وه‌،

If you read <em>Romeo and Juliet</em>,

you'll come across sentences like,

ئه‌و ڕستانەت به‌رچاو ده‌كه‌وێت،

"She doth teach the torches to burn bright,"

"ئه‌و واده‌كات مه‌شخه‌ڵه‌كان گه‌شاوه‌تر بن"

and, "So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows."

ھەروەھا، "کۆترە سپیەکان لەگەڵ قەلەڕەشەکان هاوڕێبن،"

"لێكچوانێكی زیره‌كانه‌یه‌"میتافۆر

Both are quite clever metaphors,

suggesting that Juliet is both exceptionally beautiful

وا دانراوه‌ جوانییه‌كه‌ی جولێت بێوێنه‌یه‌

and far moreso than anyone else.

له‌هه‌مووان جیاوازتره‌ كه‌ ڕۆمیۆ ده‌ڵێ.

جوانییه‌كه‌ت ئەمشەو وه‌ك هونه‌رێكی ناوازه‌یه‌،

"For thou art as glorious to this night,

له‌لای من،

being o'er my head,

as is a winged messenger of heaven,"

وه‌ك په‌ری"فریشته‌"ی به‌هه‌شت،"

is a simile suggesting angelic qualities

پێكچواندنی ئافره‌ت به‌فریشته‌

of the lady in question.

ویستی خانمانه‌.

This is not too different from today's comments like,

جیاوازییه‌كی وای نییه ‌ له‌گه‌ڵ ده‌ربڕینی ئێستادا،

"Hey, beautiful!"

وه‌ك سڵاو جوانكیله‌!"

and, "You're the hottest girl in the room."

تۆ سه‌رنجڕاكێشترینی ژووره‌كه‌ی."

Shakespeare also uses

و هه‌روه‌ها شكسپیر

slightly more complex metaphors

پێكچواندانی ئاڵۆزتری به‌كار دەهێنا

to describe the intentions of a mischievous man.

بۆ وه‌سف كردنی سه‌رنجڕاكێشان.

For instance,

بۆ نموونه‌،

"This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this: My lips,

به‌ نزیك بوونه‌وه‌ لێت وه‌ك ئه‌وه‌یه‌: كارێكی

two blushing pilgrims,

ئاینی پیرۆزم ئه‌نجام دابێت،

ready stand to smooth that rough touch

پێكچواندنی به‌ هه‌ستی خۆشی و

with a tender kiss,"

ناوازه‌یی ماچه‌كه‌،"

essentially means, "I wish to kiss you."

كه‌ له‌بنه‌ڕه‌تدا ویستی ماچكردنی جولێته‌."

Such male intentions were not limited

كه‌ پیاوان ئه‌و وه‌سفه‌

to simple pecks on the cheek either.

به‌كارده‌هێنن بۆپێكانی مه‌به‌سته‌كانیان.

An intentional ambiguity was often used

وێنه‌ و وه‌سفێكی ناڕوونه‌

as a cheeky means to proposition marriage

ده‌یه‌وێ داوای هاوسه‌رگیری یاخود

or a more intimate relationship.

له‌په‌یوه‌ندیدا بێ.

Therefore, instead of viewing Shakespearean works

بۆیه‌ له‌جیات ئه‌وه‌ی كاره‌كانی شكسپیر

as out-dated, boring, and unhelpful,

به‌بێزاركه‌ر و گران دابنرێ،
