Grammatical tense is how languages talk about time

بەپێی شێوگی ڕێزمانی زمانەکان باسی کات دەکەن

without explicitly naming time periods

بێ ئاماژەدانی کاتی دیارکراو

by, instead, modifying verbs to specify when action occurs.

So how many different tenses are there in a language like English?

At first, the answer seems obvious:

there's past,

ڕابردوو هەیە،

present,

and future.

But thanks to something called grammatical aspect,

each of those time periods actually divides further.

There are four kinds of aspect.

چوار جۆر شێوە هەیە.

In the continuous or progressive aspect,

لە شێوەی بەردەوام یان پێشکەوتوو،

the actions are still happening at the time of reference.

فەرمانەکان لە ماوەی دیاریکراودا ڕوو دەدەن.

The perfect aspect describes actions that are finished.

شێوەی تەواو باسی ئەو فەرمانانە دەکات کە کۆتایی پێ هاتووە.

The perfect progressive aspect is a combination,

شێوەی تەواوی بەردەوام تێکەڵەیە لە،

describing a completed part of a continuous action.

باس کردنی بەشێکی کۆتایی هاتوو لە فەرمانێکی بەردەوام.

And finally, there's the simple aspect,

لە کۆتاییدا، شێوەی سادە هەیە،

the basic form of the past, present, and future tense,

بنچینەی ڕابردوو، ڕانەبردوو و هەروەها داهاتووش،

where an action is not specified as continuous or discrete.

That's all a little hard to follow, so let's see how it works in action.

Let's say your friends tell you they went on a secret naval mission

بابڵێین هاوڕێکانت پێت دەڵێن کاری ژێرئاوی نهێنی ئەنجام دەدەن

to collect evidence of a mysterious sea creature.

بۆ کۆکردنەوەی بەڵگە لەسەر بوونەوەرێکی نامۆی دەریا.

The tense sets the overall frame of reference in the past,

شێوگەکە دیاری دەکات کە فەرمانەکە لە ڕابردوودا بووە،

but within that, there are many options.

بەڵام کە قووڵ بووینە لەوە دەبینین ئەگەری تر هەیە.

Your friends might say a creature attacked their boat,

هاوڕێکانت ڕەنگە بڵێن بوونەوەرێک هێرشی کردە سەر بەلەمەکە،

that's the past simple, the most general aspect,

ئەوە ڕابردووی سادەەیە، شێوەی گشتی و ناسراوە،

which gives no further clarification.

They were sleeping when it happened,

نووستبوون کاتێک ڕوویدا،

a continuous process underway at that point.

They might also tell you they had departed from Nantucket

دەکرێت بڵێن لە نانتەکێتەوە دەرچوون

to describe an action completed even earlier.

بۆ ڕوون کردنەوەی فەرمانێک کە پێشووتر ئەنجامدراوە.

That's an example of the past perfect.

ئەمە نموونەی ڕابردووی تەواوە.

Or that they had been sailing for three weeks,

یان دەڵێن بۆ سێ هەفتە بە دەریادا دەڕۆیشتن،

something that was ongoing up until that point.

فەرمانێک کە بەردەوام بوو تاکو ئەو کاتە دیاری کراوە.

In the present, they tell you that they still search for the creature today,

لە ئێستادا دەڵێن هێشتا بە دوای بوونەوەرەکە دەگەڕێن،

their present simple activity.

فەرمانی ڕانەبردووی سادە.

Perhaps they are preparing for their next mission continuously as they speak.

ڕەنگە پلانی داهاتوویان دابڕێژن لەکاتی قسە کردنیان.

And they have built a special submarine for it, a completed achievement.

ژێرئاوگەڕێکی تایبەتیان درووست کردووە فەرمانێکی کۆتای هاتووە.

Plus, if they have been researching possible sightings of the creature,

هەروەها، ئەگەر بە دوای هێما و نیشانەی بوونەوەرەکە دەگەڕان،

it's something they've been doing for a while and are still doing now

فەرمانێکە کە بۆ ماوەیەک دەیانکرد و هێشتاش دەیکەن

making it present perfect progressive.

So what does this next mission hold?

You know it still hasn't happened because they will depart next week,

the future simple.

داهاتووی سادە.

Your friends will be searching for the elusive creature,

هاوڕێکانت بە دوای بوونەوەرە نامۆکە دەگەڕێن،

an extended continuous undertaking.

فەرمانێکی بەردەوامی درێژ کراوەیە.

They tell you the submarine will have reached uncharted depths a month from now.

دەڵێن مانگێکی تر ژێر ئاوگەڕەکە دەچێتە قووڵایی نەزانراو.

That's a confident prediction

پێشبینیەکی بەهێزە

about what will be achieved by a specific point in the future,

کە دیاری دەکات لە داهاتوودا چی ڕوو دەدات،

a point at which they will have been voyaging for three weeks

کاتێکە کە ئەوان بۆ ماوەی سێ هەفتە گەشتیان دەکرد بە بەردەوامی

in the future perfect progressive.

لە داهاتووی تەواوی بەردەوام.

The key insight to all these different tenses

ئەوەی گرینگە لەم هەموو شێوگە جیاوازانە

is that each sentence takes place in a specific moment,

ئەوەیە کە هەر ڕستەیەک لە ساتێکی دیاری کراودا ڕوو دەدات،

whether it's past, present, or future.

ڕابردوو، ڕانبردوو یان داهاتوو.

The point of aspects is that they tell you as of that moment

the status of the action.

In total, they give us twelve possibilities in English.

What about other languages?

ئەی زمانەکانی تر؟

Some, like French,

وەکو فەڕەنسی،

Swahili,

سواهیلی،

and Russian take a similar approach to English.

Others describe and divide time differently.

Some have fewer grammatical tenses, like Japanese,

On the other hand, languages like Yagwa split past tense into multiple degrees,

like whether something happened hours, weeks, or years ago.

In others, tenses are intertwined with moods that can convey urgency,

necessity,

or probability of events.

This makes translation difficult but not impossible.

Speakers of most languages without certain tenses can express the same ideas

قسەکەرانی زۆربەی زمانەکان بێ شێوگەکان دەتوانن هەمان بیرۆکە بەرجەستە بکەن

with auxiliary words, like would or did,

بە وشەی یاریدەدەر، وەکو دەیکات یان کردی،

or by specifying the time they mean.

Are the variations from language to language

just differents ways of describing the same fundamental reality?
