Imagine if you could plug your brain into a machine

If you were given the choice to sign up for that kind of existence, would you?

That's the question philosopher Robert Nozick posed

through a thought experiment he called the Experience Machine.

경험 기계라고 부르던 사고 실험을 통해 제기한 것입니다.

The experiment asks us to consider a world

이 실험은 기계를 통해 세상을 보게하는데

in which scientists have developed a machine that would simulate real life

이 기계는 과학자들이 개발한 것으로 실제 삶처럼 보이도록 시뮬레이션을 하며

while guaranteeing experiences of only pleasure and never pain.

오직 즐거운 경험만을 보장하고 고통은 절대 느낄 수 없도록 짜여졌습니다.

The catch?

문제점은요?

You have to permanently leave reality behind,

영원히 현실을 떠나야 한다는 점이지만

but you'll hardly know the difference.

그 차이를 거의 못 느낄 겁니다.

Your experiences will be indistinguishable from reality.

Life's natural ups and downs

will just be replaced with an endless series of ups.

Sounds great, right?

It may seem like a tempting offer, but perhaps it's not as ideal as it sounds.

솔깃한 제안으로 보이겠지만 실제로는 그만큼 이상적이진 않습니다.

The experiment was actually designed to refute a philosophical notion

이 실험은 사실 쾌락주의라는 철학적 개념을 반박하기위해

called hedonism.

설계되었습니다.

According to hedonists,

쾌락주의자들에 의하면

maximizing net pleasure is the most important thing in life

즐거움을 극대화 시키는 것이 인생에 있어 가장 중요하다고 합니다.

because pleasure is the greatest good that life has to offer.

즐거움은 인생이 줄 수 있는 제일 대단한 것이니까요.

For hedonists, the best choice that a person could make for himself

is one that brings him the greatest possible amount of pleasure

제일 큰 즐거움을 가져다 주는 동시에

while bringing him no pain.

아무 고통이 없는 것입니다.

Limitless pleasure minus zero pain equals maximum net pleasure,

or in other words, the exact scenario the Experience Machine offers.

바로 경험 기계가 선사하는 정확한 시나리오입니다.

Therefore, if hedonism is your philosophy of choice,

따라서 쾌락주의가 당신의 선택의 철학이라면

plugging in would be a no-brainer.

뇌를 기계와 연결하는 것은 쉬운 결정일 것입니다.

But what if there's more to life than just pleasure?

그러나 인생에 기쁨말고도 다른 것들이 있다면요?

That's what Nozick believed he was demonstrating

through his Experience Machine thought experiment.

Despite the machine's promise of maximum net pleasure,

he still found reason not to plug in,

as do many other experimenters who consider the proposition.

But what could possibly dissuade us from choosing a future of ultimate pleasure?

Consider this scenario.

If the answer is yes,

you'd be choosing an option that sharply decreases your net pleasure.

Perhaps, then, you believe that there are things in life

with greater intrinsic value than pleasure.

더욱 중요한 본질적 가치가 있다고 믿을 것입니다.

Truth, knowledge, authentic connection with other human beings.

진실, 지식, 다른 사람과의 진정한 관계.

These are all things that might make the list.

By never learning the truth,

진실을 알지 못하는 것으로

Betsy is essentially living life in her own personal Experience Machine,

벳시는 그녀만의 경험기계를 통해 살고 있습니다.

a world of happiness that's not based in reality.

현실에 기반하지 않은 행복의 세계를요.

This love triangle is an extreme example,

but it mirrors many of the decisions we make in day to day life.

So whether you're making a choice for Betsy or for yourself,

Nozick's experiment may not provide all the answers,

but it forces us to consider whether real life, though imperfect,

불완전하지만 기계와 연결하는 데서 오는 기쁨을 넘어서는 본질적 가치를

holds some intrinsic value beyond the pleasure of plugging in.

현실이 가지고 있는지 고려하게 만들어 줍니다.
