Most people recognize his name

and know that he is famous for having said something,

but considering the long-lasting impact his teachings have had on the world,

very few people know who Confucius really was,

Amid the chaos of 6th Century BCE China,

紀元前６世紀の中国は 混乱のまっただ中にあり

where warring states fought endlessly among themselves for supremacy,

権力のために国々は 果てしない戦いを繰り返し

and rulers were frequently assassinated,

君主は頻繁に暗殺され 時には 自らの親族にさえも

sometimes by their own relatives,

Confucius exemplified benevolence and integrity,

孔子は仁と礼について教えを説き

その教えを通して

and through his teaching,

became one of China's greatest philosophers.

中国の偉大なる 哲学者の１人となったのです

Born to a nobleman but raised in poverty from a very young age

高貴な家系の父の下に生まれながらも 幼い頃から貧しい環境に育ち

following the untimely death of his father,

早くに父を亡くした孔子が 作り上げた思想は

Confucius developed what would become

a lifelong sympathy for the suffering of the common people.

やがて苦悩する一般民衆にとって 生涯の心の支えとなりました

牛飼いや穀物蔵の帳簿係 その他の半端仕事などで

Barely supporting his mother and disabled brother

as a herder and account keeper at a granary,

母親と障碍を持つ弟を

and with other odd jobs,

なんとか支えながらも

it was only with the help of a wealthy friend

裕福な友人の助けによって

that Confucius was able to study at the Royal Archives,

孔子は王朝の書庫で学ぶことができ

where his world view would be formed.

独自の世界観を養うことができたのです

Though the ancient texts there were regarded by some

as irrelevant relics of the past,

Confucius was inspired by them.

Through study and reflection,

学問と思考を重ねていく中で

Confucius came to believe that human character is formed in the family

人の人格は家庭の中で そして 儀式や文学 そして歴史などの教育によって

and by education in ritual, literature, and history.

形成されていくということを 信じるようになりました

そのようにして育った人は 周りの人間を助けるために働き

A person cultivated in this way works to help others,

guiding them by moral inspiration rather than brute force.

力ずくではなく 道義で周りを導いていきます

To put his philosophy into practice,

自らの哲学を実践していくために

Confucius became an advisor to the ruler of his home state of Lu.

孔子は自身の故郷である 魯国で君主の補佐となりました

But after another state sent Lu's ruler a troop of dancing girls as a present

しかし 他国が魯国の君主に 贈り物として踊り子を贈ると

and the ruler ignored his duties while enjoying the girls in private,

君主が踊り子にうつつを抜かし 務めを疎かにしたため

Confucius resigned in disgust.

孔子は失意のうちに 職を辞しました

He then spent the next few years traveling from state to state,

その後の数年間 孔子は 国から国へと旅を続け

trying to find a worthy ruler to serve, while holding fast to his principles.

自らの思想を固く貫きながら 仕えるに値する君主を探し続けたのです

It wasn't easy.

それは簡単なことではありませんでした

In accordance with his philosophy, and contrary to the practice of the time,

孔子は自分の哲学に従い 当時の常識にも関わらず

Confucius dissuaded rulers from relying on harsh punishments and military power

懲罰や軍事力で 国を支配するべきではないと

君主たちに説きました

to govern their lands

because he believed that a good ruler

優れた君主は

inspires others to spontaneously follow him

道義的な美徳の「仁」によって 自と人々を奮起させることで

by virtue of his ethical charisma.

自分に追従させることができると 確信していたからです

Confucius also believed

また 孔子は家庭内で培われる

that because the love and respect we learn in the family

愛と尊敬が 他 すべての美徳の基本であり

are fundamental to all other virtues,

家族への個人的な義務は 時には国家への義務より

personal duties to family sometimes supersede obligations to the state.

優先されるべきものだと 信じていました

So when one duke bragged that his subjects were so upright

ある男が羊を盗んだとき その息子が父親に対して

that a son testified against his own father

不利になる証言をするほどまでに

when his father stole a sheep,

自分の臣民は高潔であると ある君主が自慢すると

Confucius informed the duke

孔子は君主に対し

that genuinely upright fathers and sons protected one another.

本当に高潔な父と息子であれば 互いを守り抜くであろうと伝えました

During his travels, Confucius almost starved,

旅の途中では 孔子は餓死寸前だったこともあれば

he was briefly imprisoned,

しばらく収監されたこともあり

and his life was threatened at several points.

何度も死の危機に遭いました

But he was not bitter.

それでも 彼は 卑屈にはなりませんでした

Confucius had faith that heaven had a plan for the world,

天の思し召しを心から信じていました

and he taught that a virtuous person

そして 徳ある者は 常に学問と音楽に

could always find joy in learning and music.

歓びを見出すことができると説きました

Failing to find the ruler he sought,

望んでいたような君主に 出会うこともなく

Confucius returned to Lu

孔子は魯国に戻り

and became a teacher and philosopher so influential,

教師となるとともに哲学者となり 多くの人々に影響を与え

that he helped shaped Chinese culture

中国の文化を形作るために貢献しました

and we recognize his name worldwide, even today.

そういった理由で 今でも孔子の名が 世界中で知られているのです

For the disciples of Confucius,

弟子たちにとって孔子は

he was the living embodiment of a sage who leads others through his virtue,

自らの徳をもって他を導くことのできる 叡智の化身であったため

and they recorded his sayings,

孔子の教えを記録し続けました

which eventually were edited into a book we know in English as "The Analects."

後にその記録が「論語」として知られる 1冊の書物にまとめられたのです

Today, millions of people worldwide adhere to the principles of Confucianism,

今日 世界中の何百万という人々が 孔子の教えを支持し

and though the precise meaning of his words has been debated for millennia,

彼の教義の正確な意味合いについて 千年以上も議論されていますが

when asked to summarize his teachings in a single phrase,

簡潔な言葉でその教えを 要約するよう言われたとき

Confucius himself said,

孔子自身がこう言ったそうです

"Do not inflict upon others that which you yourself would not want."

「己が望まぬことを他にしてはいけない」と

2,500 years later, it's still sage advice.

2500年たった今でも それは人間にとっての本質的な導きといえます
