Most people recognize his name

and why.

Amid the chaos of 6th Century BCE China,

혼돈스러웠던 기원전 6세기 중국에서는

where warring states fought endlessly among themselves for supremacy,

전쟁국가들이 끊임없이 패권을 위해서 싸웠으며

and rulers were frequently assassinated,

통치자들은 빈번히 암살되었습니다.

sometimes by their own relatives,

때로는 친적들에게도 말이지요.

Confucius exemplified benevolence and integrity,

공자는 스스로 인(仁)과 의(義)의 예를 보여주었으며

and through his teaching,

그의 가르침을 통해서

became one of China's greatest philosophers.

중국에서 가장 위대한 철학자 중 한명이 되었습니다.

Born to a nobleman but raised in poverty from a very young age

공자는 상류층으로 태어났지만 어렸을 때부터 가난 속에서 자랐습니다.

following the untimely death of his father,

아버지가 일찍 돌아가셨기 때문이지요.

Confucius developed what would become

덕분에 그는 평생동안 지니고 살아갔던

a lifelong sympathy for the suffering of the common people.

고통받는 민중에 대한 동정심을 키울 수 있었습니다.

Barely supporting his mother and disabled brother

어머니와 몸이 불편한 형을 보살피기 위해서

as a herder and account keeper at a granary,

그는 목동, 창고 관리인이나 그외의 잡다한 일들로 생계를 이어나갔습니다.

and with other odd jobs,

it was only with the help of a wealthy friend

하지만 한 부유한 친구의 도움 덕분에

that Confucius was able to study at the Royal Archives,

공자는 왕실의 서고에서 공부 할 수 있었고

where his world view would be formed.

이곳에서 자신만의 세계관을 형성해 나갔습니다.

Though the ancient texts there were regarded by some

몇 몇의 사람들은

as irrelevant relics of the past,

그 곳에 있던 고대 서적들을 쓸모없는 유물정도로 여겼지만

Confucius was inspired by them.

공자는 이 서적들에서 영감을 얻었습니다.

Through study and reflection,

탐구와 숙고의 시간을 거쳐

Confucius came to believe that human character is formed in the family

공자는 사람의 인성은 가족 내에서 형성되며

and by education in ritual, literature, and history.

의례, 문학, 역사와 같은 것에 대한 교육도 영향을 준다고 믿었습니다.

A person cultivated in this way works to help others,

공자는 이런 식으로 성장한 사람이 다른 사람들을 도와서

guiding them by moral inspiration rather than brute force.

그들이 폭력보다는 도덕적 영감으로 주위 사람들을 이끌게 된다고 믿었지요.

To put his philosophy into practice,

자신의 철학을 실행에 옮기고자

Confucius became an advisor to the ruler of his home state of Lu.

공자는 그의 고향인 노나라를 다스리던 통치자의 고문이 되었습니다.

But after another state sent Lu's ruler a troop of dancing girls as a present

그러나 다른 나라가 이 통치자에게 선물로 무희들을 보낸 이후로

and the ruler ignored his duties while enjoying the girls in private,

그가 자신의 직책을 무시하고 무희들과 놀아나는 것을 보고

Confucius resigned in disgust.

공자는 치를 떨며 그를 떠나갔습니다.

He then spent the next few years traveling from state to state,

trying to find a worthy ruler to serve, while holding fast to his principles.

It wasn't easy.

In accordance with his philosophy, and contrary to the practice of the time,

Confucius dissuaded rulers from relying on harsh punishments and military power

to govern their lands

because he believed that a good ruler

inspires others to spontaneously follow him

by virtue of his ethical charisma.

Confucius also believed

that because the love and respect we learn in the family

가족에서 배운 사랑과 존경심이

are fundamental to all other virtues,

다른 모든 미덕의 근본이 된다고 믿었고

personal duties to family sometimes supersede obligations to the state.

따라서 가족에 대한 의무가

국가에 대한 의무보다 중요할 수도 있다고 믿었습니다.

So when one duke bragged that his subjects were so upright

그래서 어느날 한 통치자가 자신의 백성들은 너무 바른사람들이라

that a son testified against his own father

어느 아버지가 양을 훔쳤을 때

when his father stole a sheep,

그 아들이 아버지에게 불리한 증언까지 했다고 자랑하자

Confucius informed the duke

공자는 진정으로 올바른 아들과 아버지는

that genuinely upright fathers and sons protected one another.

서로를 보호해야 하는 것이라고 군주에게 답해주었습니다.

During his travels, Confucius almost starved,

공자는 전국을 돌아다니는 동안 거의 굶주린 상태였고

he was briefly imprisoned,

잠시 감옥에 갇혀있거나

and his life was threatened at several points.

꽤 자주 생명의 위협을 받기도 했습니다.

But he was not bitter.

하지만 그는 굴하지 않았습니다.

Confucius had faith that heaven had a plan for the world,

공자는 하늘이 만물에 대한 뜻을 가지고 있다고 믿었으며

and he taught that a virtuous person

고귀한 사람은 항상 배움과 음악에서 즐거움을 찾을 수 있다고 가르쳤습니다.

could always find joy in learning and music.

Failing to find the ruler he sought,

그는 자신이 원하던 통치자를 찾지 못하자

Confucius returned to Lu

고향 노나라로 돌아왔고

and became a teacher and philosopher so influential,

영향력있는 스승이자 철학자가 되어

that he helped shaped Chinese culture

중국 문화를 형성하는데 기여했습니다.

and we recognize his name worldwide, even today.

그리고 그의 이름은 오늘날까지도 전 세계에 알려져 있지요.

For the disciples of Confucius,

그의 제자들에게 있어서

he was the living embodiment of a sage who leads others through his virtue,

공자는 그 덕으로 다른 사람들을 이끄는 살아있는 성인과 같은 존재였고

and they recorded his sayings,

그들은 공자의 말씀들을 기록했습니다.

which eventually were edited into a book we know in English as "The Analects."

이렇게 엮어진 말씀들은 책으로 만들어져 우리에게 '논어'라고 알려져있지요.

Today, millions of people worldwide adhere to the principles of Confucianism,

오늘날, 전 세계의 많은 사람들이 유교의 원칙을 고수합니다.

and though the precise meaning of his words has been debated for millennia,

그가 남긴 말씀들의 진정한 의미에 대한 논쟁은 천년이 넘게 계속되어오고 있지만

when asked to summarize his teachings in a single phrase,

그의 가르침을 한 문장으로 요약해 달라고 했을 때

Confucius himself said,

공자는 이렇게 말했습니다.

"Do not inflict upon others that which you yourself would not want."

"네가 원치 않는 일은 남에게도 시키지 말라"

2,500 years later, it's still sage advice.

이 말은 2500년이지난 지금도 여전히 훌륭한 말씀으로 남아있지요.
