So what is gravity?

کەواتە هێزی کێشکردنی زەوی چییە؟

I bet most of you think it's:

گرەودەکەم زۆربەتان وا بیرلەمە ده‌کەنەوە:

"What goes up,

هەرشتێک بەرزبێتەوە،

must come down!" Is that right?

پێویستە بکەوێتە سەر زەوی! وایە؟

Well, sorta, but not really.

باشە، بەم شێوەیە، بەڵام نەک بەتەواوی.

Technically, the law of gravity is an equation.

لەڕووی تەکنیکیەوە، یاسای کێشکردنی زەوی هاوکێشەیەکە.

It is: F = G x M1 x M2 / R^2,

F = G x M1 x M2 / R^2,

where G is the universal gravitational constant,

G کێشکردنی نەگۆڕی گەردوونە،

M1 and M2 are the masses of the two objects,

M1 و M2 قەبارەی دوو تەنن،

and R is the distance between them squared.

و R مەودای نێوان دووجاکانیانە.

That was easy, right?

Probably not. What does this actually mean?

Well it means that - well, everything is attracted to everything else.

باشە ئەمه‌ واتا، هەمووشتێک لەلایەن شتی دیکەوە ڕادەکێشرێت.

What I mean by that is if you have two objects, any two objects,

مەبەستم چییە لەمە ئەگەر دوو تەن هەبێت، هەر تەنێکبن،

they are attracted to each other. OK.

بۆلای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن. باشە.

با هەوڵبدەین و رێگایەکی نوێ بدۆزینەوە تا تێیبگەین.

Let's try and wrap our minds around this.

What happens when you drop a rock off a cliff?

چی ڕوودەدات کاتیک بەردێک لەسەر شاخێک بەردەدەیتەوە؟

It falls to the earth. Right?

دەکەوێتە سەر زەوی. واییە؟

Well, yes, but something else happens.

باشە، بەڵێ، بەڵام شتێکی دیکە ڕوودەدات.

You see, the law of gravity says that both objects,

دەبینیت، یاسای کێشکردن دەڵێت هەردوو تەنەکە،

the rock and the earth, are attracted to each other.

بەرد و زەوی، هەردووکیان بۆلای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن.

This means that the rock falls towards the earth,

ئەمەش واتا بەردەکە دەکەوێت تا بەر زەوی بکەوێت،

and the earth falls towards the rock.

و زەویش دەکەوێت تا بەر بەردەکە بکەوێت.

Wait a second - you mean to tell me that if - the earth falls up to meet the rock?

چرکەیەک بوەستە، مەبەستت ئەوەیە پێمبڵێی كه‌ گەر زەوی بەرزبێتەوە تا بەر بەردەکە بکه‌وێ

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

بەڵێ، بەدەقیقی مەبەستم ئەوەیە.

And the reason you don't see the earth fall up to meet the rock

تۆ نایبینیت زەوی بەرز دەبێتەوە تا بەر بەردەکە بکەوێت

is because the objects move towards each other proportionate to their respective masses.

چونکە تەنەکان هاوڕێژەییانە بەریەک دەکەون بەهۆی قەبارە قەدەرگرانەکانیانەوە.

The earth is much much much more massive than the rock,

زەوی زۆر زۆر زۆر گەورەتره‌ لە بەردەکە،

so it moves a very very small distance,

هەربۆیە بۆ مەودایەکی زۆر زۆر بچوک دەجوڵێت،

and the rock is much less massive, so it moves farther

و بەردەکە زۆر بچووکترە، هەربۆیە بۆ مەودایەکی دووتر دەجوڵێت

with respect to the earth.

بەراورد بە زەوی.

Maybe a better way to understand gravity is to take two teenagers

لەوانەیە ڕێگایەکی باشتر تا لە کێشکردن بگه‌یت ئەوەی دوو لاو بهێنیت پۆشاكی

in spacesuits, and place them far out in space - away from all the planets and the stars.

ئاسمانەوانیان لەبەربکەیت، لە شوێنێکی دوور لە بۆشای ئاسمان دوور لە هەسارە و

It turns out they will be attracted to each other.

ئه‌ستێره‌كان دابنێیت. پاشان دەردەکەوێت بۆلای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن.

I'm not talking about that kind of attraction.

لەبارەی ئەم جۆره‌ سەرنج ڕاکێشانەوە قسەناکەم،

See, they have mass, and since they have mass,

سەیرکە، قەبارەیان هەیە، هەرکاتێک قەبارەیان هەبوو،

they will move towards each other.

بەرەو ڕووی یەکتری دەجوڵێن.

They are attracted to each other.

بۆلای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن.

لەوانەیە یەک شتی دیکە یارمەتی ده‌ربێت. ئایە هیچ کات بە دوو موگناتیس یاریت کردوە؟

Maybe one more thing might help. Have you ever played with two magnets?

You know, the magnets with the north and the south poles?

دەزانیت، موگناتیس جەمسەری باکور و باشوری هەییه‌؟

When you take the magnets and put them closer to each other,

کاتێک موگناتیسەکان دەهێنیت و لە نزیک یەکیان دادەنێیت،

they move together. They are attracted to each other.

بەیەکەوە دەجوڵێن، بۆلای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن.

And the closer they are, the stronger the attraction.

و لەیەکتریەوە نزیکتربن ڕاکێشانەکە بەهێزتر دەبێت.

Think of the mass of the object like the strength of a magnet

قەبارەی تەنەکە وەکو هێزی موگناتیسەکە بیریلێبکەوە

and the distance between the objects like the distance between the two magnets.

و مەودای نێوان دوو تەنەکە وەکو مەودای نێوان دوو موگناتیسەکە بیریلێبکەوە.

Now understand, I'm not saying that gravity and magnetism are the same,

ئێستا تێدەگەیت. کەوا ناڵێم کێشکردنی زەوی و موگناتیس وەک یەکن،

they just behave in a similar way.

تەنها بە یەک شێوە وەکو یەک ڕەفتاردەکەن.

Let's think of one other thing - astronauts.

You know, astronauts, they weigh less on the moon

than on the earth. Why is that?

Well you see, the moon is less massive than the earth.

Therefore it has a smaller gravitational pull on the astronaut.

هەربۆیە هێزێکی کێشکردنی بچووکتر ئاسمانەوانەکە ڕادەکێشێت

It's like the moon is a weaker magnet.

وادەردەکەوێت مانگ موگناتیسێکی لاوازترە،

They aren't as attracted to each other.

بۆلای یەکتری ڕاناکێشرێن.

Distance also plays a role. Think back to playing with a magnet.

مەوداش ڕۆڵێک دەگێڕێت، دووبارە بیرلە یارکردن بە موگناتیسێک بکەوە.

The pull of the magnets towards each other

ڕاکێشانی موگناتیسەکان بۆلای یەکتری

are stronger when they are closer together. The same is true of gravity.

بەهێزترە کاتێک لەیەکەوە نزیکن. هەمان شتیش بۆ کێشکردنی زەوی ڕاستە.

For example, the sun is the most massive object near the earth.

بۆنموونە، خۆر گەورەترین تەنی نزیک زەوییە.

It dictates most of the gravitational forces in our solar system.

زۆرترین هێزی کێشکردنی زەوی بەسەر سیستەمی خۆرمان دەسەپێنێت.

It is very very massive. But it is relatively far away,

زۆر زۆر گەورەیە. بەڵام ڕێژەیانە زۆر دوورە،

so even though the sun is a much stronger magnet, so to speak,

کەواتە تەنانەت خۆریش موگناتیسێکی به‌هێزتره‌، هەربۆ قسە،

it is a long ways away.

ئەمە زۆر دوورە.

Therefore the attraction isn't as strong.

هەربۆیە ڕاکێشانەکە بەهێز نییە.

So let's look back at that law of gravity.

The equation: F = G x M1 x M2 / R ^2.

هاوکێشەکە: F = G x M1 x M2 / R ^2.

You see the force of gravity is equal to a number.

دەبینن هێزی کێشکردنی زەوی یەکسانە بە ژمارەیەک.

That's that universal gravitational constant G

ئەمەش G هێزی کێشکردنی نەگۆڕی گەردوونە

times the mass of object one, times the mass of object two.

جارانی قەبارەی تەنی یەک، جارانی قەبارە تەنی دووەم.

Think of M1 being the mass of the sun

بیرلە M1 بکەوە وەکو قەبارەی خۆر

and M2 being the mass of the earth.

و M2 وەکو قەبارەی زەوی.

And then we divide by the distance between them squared.

و دواتر بە مەودای نێوان دووجاکانیان دابەشیان دەکەین.

This determines the force of attraction between the sun and earth.

You could just as easily plug in your mass

دەوانیت بە ئاسانی قەبارەی خۆر بخەیتەکار

and the earth's mass and the distance between you and the center of the earth,

قەبارەی زەوی و مەودای نێوان تۆ و ناوەندی زەوی،

و بۆت دەردەکەوێت چەندە لەلایەن زەویەوە ڕاکێشراویت.

and find out how much you are attracted to the earth,

and the earth attracted to you.

So, what's gravity?

کەواتە کێشکردنی زه‌وی چییە؟

Everything is attracted to everything else.

هەمووشتێک بۆلای شتی دیکە ڕادەکێشرێت.

Everything. Oh, one last thing,

هەمووشتێک، ئۆ، کۆتا شت،

just to make you wonder. What causes gravity?

تەنها بۆئەوەی بیربکەیتەوە، چی دەبێتەهۆی دروستبوونی کێشکردن؟

Why are two objects with mass attracted to each other?

بۆچی دوو تەنی قەبارەدار بۆ لای یەکتری ڕادەکێشرێن؟

Well, the answer is -

We don't know.

نازانین.

The cause of gravity remains a mystery to scientists.

هۆکاری دروستبوونی کێشکردن وەکو نهێنیەک بۆ زاناکان ماوەتەوە.

We don't really know conclusively what causes gravity.

بەڕاستی ئێمەش بەدڵنیایەوە نازانین چی دەبێتەهۆی دروستکردنی کێشکردن.

It is one of the great mysteries of science.
